Hi
I do believe we share the same relatives - I am the grandaughter of the oldest girl of Charles and Marie - her name was Doris - she married James Webb but divorced when my mother Louise Marie was 5 years old. My mother and grandmother left Dawson when my mother was 12 and moved to Vancouver where she lived until her death in 2002. My grandmother was born on the 14th November 1914 and I have a picture of all the family together including the person I believe to be your father - if I am on the right track - your father and my mother although uncle and niece were very close in age - my mother was born in 1935. It would be very interesting to know if you think that this information relates to you in any way.

Hi,

My great-grandparents' siblings moved to Dawson and Mayo area. Sinai Pelland married Malvina Guilbault in Ste-Élisabeth QC. He ran a hotel (Broadway?) in Dawson City. I think that Edouard Pelland and Rodrigue Pelland may have also spent some time up there. Send me what you have on the Pellants, and I should be able to identify them. Sinai and Malvina had a few sons, Joseph married Rose-Alba Pelland, Léopold married Joséphine Besner and Lazare married Rose-Aimée Masse.

JR Pelland jeanpelland@3web.net

In "Gold and Galena", a History of the Mayo District, published by the Mayo Historical Society in 1990 (ISBN 0-88925-934-8) there are two entries:

Hollenbeck, Anthony A. "Tony"
"Tony" Hollenbeck was one of the early prospector [sic] in the Ogilvie Mountains. he helped stake the Lake Group of claims in the keno Hill area in the 1920's. Hollenbeck was also a blacksmith. He was born in 1869 and died in Mayo in 1947. (See also John Hollenback)

Hollenbeck, John E.
John Hollenbeck staked the Travice claim on March 21, 1921. John and Anthony "Tony" Hollenbeck were part of the Hollenbeck family who ran the roadhouse at the Klondike River on the Mayo-Dawson trial, circa 1905 to 1929. (The name has also been incorrectly written Hollenback and Hollenbach.)

Hello Jean-Pierre,
I am not sure if you are still looking for info on Marie-Ange Beaudin (since the post is a few years old), but she was one of my grandmother's aunts. She was (to my knowledge) the only one of her sibilings to head to the Yukon. I have a copy of her obituary - it tells a very intresting story of her move from Quebec to the Yukon, where she married Mr. Cyr in 1903. Please contact me if you would like additional information.
Maribeth Kowalski (Seneca, South Carolina USA)

Excuse me for not giving more details on John H. Pennington (Jeremiah H. Pennington), such as a few dates.

John H. Pennington was born in 1848 in Maine (probably in Houlton, Arooostook County) and grew up there and in New Brunswick, Canada.

He married, first, about 1867, probably in New Brunswick, Margaret Jonah. They had at least seven children, including these three who lived to adulthood:

1. Lillian Isabell Pennington, born in 1868 in New Brunswick.
2. Frank Frederick Pennington, born in about 1872 in Maine.
3. Gertrude Eugenie Pennington, born in 1876 in Wisconsin.

John H. Pennington married, second, Nancy G. Martin and they had a son:

Calvin Martin Pennington, born in 1888 in Brownsville, Texas.

John H. Pennington married, third, Beatriz Otero in Bogota, Colombia, in about 1893.

After living for a short time in Minnesota and Dakota Territory around 1880, he headed south and moved around a lot in the 1880s and 1890s:

1887: Los Angeles.
1888: San Francisco.
1889: Brownsville, Texas.
1891: Philadelphia and New Orleans.
1892: Colombia, South America.
1892-1896: South America.
1893: Arrived in New York from Venezuela.
1894-1895: Bogota, Colombia.
1895: New York City and Bangor, Maine.
1895: Rochester and Buffalo, New York.
1896: Rochester, New York and Bangor, Maine.
1896: Arrived in New Orleans from Belize.
1896: Chicago.

Between 1892 and 1909 he traveled frequently between New Orleans and Belize, Costa Rica and Cuba.

In 1895 he was named president of the newly formed International North and South American Transportation and Express Company, which transported freight.

He was in Colombia in the 1890s and got a contract to build a railroad between Bogota and the coast. In Fort Worth and Austin, Texas, around 1901 and 1903, he was the livestock agent for the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railway Company.

Someone just alerted me that Pennington Railway Stop in British Columbia, on the Yukon border, was named after an early investor in the White Pass and Yukon narrow-gauge railroad. Since John H. Pennington was involved in the railroad business in South America, maybe he was an investor in this railroad in Canada, too. Descendants think he was in the Yukon Territory in the 1920s or 1930s, but maybe it was earlier.

Doing a quick Google search, I see that the White Pass and Yukon Route was built in 1898 during the Klondike Gold Rush. Even though John H. Pennington was traveling between New Orleans and Central America at that time, maybe he was still an investor in the White Pass and Yukon railroad. Anyway, I'll have to find out if he was the Pennington for whom the Pennington Railway Stop in British Columbia, on the Yukon border, was named.

Rick Crume e-mail, rick@onelibrary.com

I am looking for anyone who would remember my father who lived in Whitehorse and surrounding areas between the mid 70's up until his death in 1985. He ran a trap line approx 60 miles outside of Whitehorse for a time and also worked in the construction trades and possibly sheet metal work.
He may have also used his christened name Alexander Angus Sutherland. He had some of his articles published in local newspapers, most likely using the Derrick surname. He was married to a lady whose maiden name may have been Smarch.
He passed away in 1985 enroute to a new job at a construction site in Alaska. Any info would be appreciated to help me piece together my Dad's final years.

If that is correct, can you please provide a current street address or e-mail?
address?

We would love hear from anyone and see if there has been any progress or research and how everyone is as Elanor and Richard were not doing well at last info.

I know Chris has limited computer time so I keep contact light with him.

Let us know how things are - looking forward to hearing from you.
Surname: Nelson

I am looking to make contact with Edward Nelson, son of Thomas Nelson (born in England circa 1908) or anyone having knowledge of Edward. Note the purpose of my request is for genealogical purposes only since Edward might possibly still be alive.

Thomas Nelson is one of two brothers. He was born in Newburn, Northumberland, England in 1908.Thomas worked on ships as an engineer between 1930 and 1940 and maybe later. I know he emmigrated to America at some time (about 1930's) and may have ended up living in Yukon, Canada. He may have married a lady called Jean.

He has a brother James Mitchell Nelson born 1909 also Newburn, Northumberland. James emmigrated to Welland,Ontario, Canada in 1947. He was married to Elsie Hall when he travelled and I have found relevant information for these two.

Thomas and James parents were Edward Hall and Elizabeth Wilkinson. They were born in Northumberland, England.

(I am aware that there was a famous naturalist working in the 19th century by the name of Edward Nelson. Note that the Edward I wish information on is not connected to this Edward in any way.)

Hello Anita, I recently found a photo at the Anchorage Archives online that was of a few boys lined up in Skagway. These boys worked as "newsies" or newspaper boys. One boy, about 14 (photo from 1898) was listed as Bill Forest. There is no record of any family named Forest in Skagway at that time ( I have a list of 5800 people from that time up to about 1930) Is it possible he is the boy you mentioned?
Marlene McCluskey in Skagway

Re: Mary Jane Forrest

Our line of Forrest's went on to Chicken from the ships. We have Mary Jane, Jesse, Laurence Luke Lorenzo, Jesse Jr, Joseph, and I do not know of any others. Also they used 2 r's in the surname.
I would be interested to see the photo but I doubt it is my line.
I am not sure just where Mary Jane died it could be on the 40-Mile River at the cabin where they had one or others were in Dawson.

Other surnames who went to AK and YT are Durocher, Carter and Jeanneret. Carter and Jeaneret are both Charles and the Durocher has several first names.

The Forrest's were all back by 1920. If the other surnames stayed I do not have the dates of their return to the Seattle area.

Thanks for offering assistance on this mystery in AK.
Anita Austin

I have copies of photographs that someone other than my father took while working there. I also have a book that has signatures of all the men and women that worked on his crew. I will see if the person you are looking for, signed the book.
I hope you have found the information you need since your posting.

Hello Richard:

I have the record of this marriage from the index of the St Mary's Catholic Church Register.

I have many pages of actual records from the Church, but, nothing that early I'm afraid.

Onesime GRAVEL & Marie FORTIN were married June 27, 1900.

Neither set of parents were named. This is quite unusual for this index.

Guests/Witnesses were Jolk? TREMBLAY & Wilfrid TREMBLAY.

According to the 1901 Census, Onesime as born circa 1872. In 1881 there is an Onesime GRAVEL born circa 1872 in Quebec, parents Alphe & Louise.

There is a Charles Gravelle, aged 64, living on Bonanza Creek, Yukon in 1901.....Onesime & Mary are also living on Bonanza Creek in 1901. There are a Frederick TREMBLAY & a George TREMBLAY living with them (partner & lodger)

Their son Joseph Alfred Onesime, was born Jan 5, 1902. Godfather is listed as Charles GRAVEL.The Godmother is listed as Mme Emelie TREMBLAY, represented by Marie Agnes BINET.

Found something interesting in Quebec in 1901....Louise GRAVEL (wife to Alphe & mother to Onesime in 1881)is listed by a researcher as nee TREMBLAY. Alphe is listed/corrected as Alphee Olivier, son of Louis Anselme & Julie GALIEN.

Seems to point fairly strongly to Onesimes mother being Louise TREMBLAY & his father being Alphe/Alhphee GRAVEL?

Mary/Marie FORTIN is too common a name to tackle!:-)

Hope this is of some help.

Ginny
