Hello Rose,
I have a Don Nicolas Romo De Vivar who married Donia Bonifacia Vilapando, My 6th GF is the son if Nicolas his name Rafael Romo who married Maria De Olaya. Miguel Beltran a cousin belives that this son Rafael is in fact a freed slave that has taken Nicolas's last name.
Don Nicolas's father was Don Jose Romo De Vivar who maried Donia Micaela, his father was Captain Nicolas Romo De Vivar who married Maria Villaobos, then His father Diego Romo De Vivar II, married Luisa De LOs Reyes Y Angeles.
So in this case of the question of how many Nicolas's in the late 1600s,there are at least two Nicolas's I believe.
