Not sure what the Probate means. Normally it means probate a will/property after death of either married partner, so that the children don't lose their inheritance. As adults they still would get a share of property, I don't know what the laws were in Alabama at that time. So I'm lost there.
Because Johanna & Steiner were on the 1930 census and he adopted her 2 kids from Germany. I assume Johanna & Steiner married in Panama.
Possible Catherine divorced him in Panama also.
I didn't look for Offermann on the Panama Canal census records, he must have died soon after arriving there.
That was an awful place to live, malaria was the biggest killer of occupants than anything else.
And coming from cool weather like Germany to a place that is hot and humid, plus the diseases was the death of many people.
From the ship list the Steiners traveled back and forth between Panama and New Orleans to Mobile, Alabama,
