Anyone by chance still researching Alfred Reeves?
Was Alfred married prior to his marriage to Clara Amy MINISTER?
I have records of an Alfred REEVES described as a "burlesque actor and manager," and manager/owner of "Reeves' Beauty Show," marriying Willie Almeda FOWLER (1886-1964) of Florence, Lauderdale County, AL.
According the *Florence Times* of Fri., Nov. 16, 1907, quoting the *New York Times* of Oct. 30, 1907 (I can't locate this article in the NYT), Alfred REEVES and Willie Almeda FOWLER were married Wed., Oct. 26, 1907 at the Central Methodist Church, Newark, NJ. In the 1910 census, this Alfred and Almeda are enumerated in Brooklyn, NY. Alfred's job description reads "theatrical."
As late as April, 1925 Florence, AL papers continued to refer to Almeda as "Mrs. Alfred H. REEVES of New York." However the 1940 census of Los Angeles records Almeda as Almeda FOWLER.
Almeda began her career in Vaudeville, was discovered by Alfred REEVES, and later became a film actress, playing supporting roles in dozens of films from the 1920s to 1040s.
My question is, is the Alred REEVES who married Almeda FOWLER the same Alfred REEVES who discovered and managed Charlie CHAPLIN?
If so, I'd love to swap information with Reeves family researchers. I'm not a descendant, but am a local historian in Florence. I know a Fowler relative who's researching Almeda who would would *love* to swap information.
I have a file w/documentation for Almeda and her Vaudeville/film career, as well as information on her family (censuses; obits; newspaper articles; etc.). I also have Alfred Reeve's (Chaplain's manager) obituary from the NYT of Mon,. April 8, 1946.
