Wow. Lots of excellent information about this family! See also Ancestry.com family tree with Daniel F Harloff titled “Alsatian Roots and all Germanic.” The family arrived in America before February 1872, when Anna Harloff was born in Illinois, and probably in 1870-1871.
The Harloffs seem to have been members of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church (see below) where there may be more family records.
About the various extra Harloffs: They clog up the discussion a bit and perhaps should be set aside for now. It remains to be seen whether there is a grandfather in common for Daniel Harloff and August Harloff and other Harloffs in Chicago. They do NOT have the same father. Daniel’s father is Carl Friedrich Harloff and Daniel is born in Suelze (sp). The August Harloff mentioned is said to be born in Suelze also (see link), but he is the son of August Christian Adolf Harloff b 1811; both immigrated to Chicago. August senior’s brother Johan Friedrich Joachim Harloff b 1819 also immigrated to USA 1869.

Daniel immigrated a year or two after August and co., which fits the traditional pattern of immigrants going to join others who had forged ahead.
The thread has CERTAINLY located Emma’s grandparents in Germany! Amazing, and I hope the original poster will return to find this wonderful news and thank the volunteers. Looking again above, at the birth record for

About CARL F. HARLOFF (called Charles) 29 May 1876-1916
Birth Record for Carl F. Harloff
From St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church records 1876
CARL FRIEDRICH LOUIS JOHANN HARLOFF
FATHER Daniel Harloff
MOTHER Caroline Gaudian
Carl born 29 May 1876 and baptized 09 July 1876 at St. John’s Church (Elgin, Illinois). LINK:http://www.elginroots.com/index.php?option=com_content&v...
Here are the sponsors at Carl’s baptism 1876. This list also shows Daniel Harloff as a sponsor at two baptisms:http://www.elginroots.com/index.php?option=com_content&v...
The Charles F. Harloff who married Ida Steinbach 16 September 1899 was born about 1877, so he is likely “your” Carl F./Charles F. Harloff. Here in 1910:
Cook County, Illinois
Chas Harloff 33
Ida Harloff 30
Chas Harloff 3
Carl F. Harloff b 1876 is likely the Charles F. Harloff who died 1916 in Muskegon County, Michigan (father’s name given as Daniel Harloff on death record).
Charles was frequently used as an Anglecisation for Carl, which seems odd to us nowadays, as Carl is a perfectly good name!
