There could be several reasons why her age fluctuates -- some people didn't know their birthdates (that's rare, I think), the census taker could have heard incorrectly (especially with non-English speakers' accents), the census taker could have recorded it incorrectly, a different family member (or even neighbor) could have provided the info and not known exactly (in this case, Lucy gave the info), and frankly -- women have often lied about their ages throughout history!

I think she would be less likely to lie re: the job market (she was a "domestic" -- either a maid or a cook.) I've always thought that people wanted older maids, cooks and servants back then -- they were more "settled" and experienced, and were less likely to be tempting to sons and husbands!
