[CREEK-SOUTHEAST] Ransom Meadows of Tallapoosa County, Alabama - Native American (Creek) kinship?

List members:

I have been reading your posts/discussions for a while now.

I have been wondering if anyone could direct me to possible documents that would give proof or disprove that Ransom Meadows in-laws were of Native American (Creek) origin.

There are articles and photographs I have seen (online) that show he had many sons-/daughters-in-law that were of Creek heritage.

Ransom Middleton Meadows (B: 25 dec 1786 in Coranade, Warren County, NC) married Sarah Leona Stevens (Stephens) (B: abt 1791 in Wilkes County, GA). This couple lived, died and were buried in Tallapoosa County, Alabama.

The Meadows family was known for a 'large spread' of land with "a lot of servants" (which may have been a 'cover' to protect Creek refugees who had been forced from Georgia, during a land grab...This I suspect, but have no firm proof of.).

Other names related to Ransom and Sarah meadows which seem to have Creek ties include the following:
* William Allan Lansing Hardy
* Robert Hardy
* Florence Diadema Hogan
* Diadema Peeples (Peoples) Hogan
* John B. Hardy
* Martha Diademia "Patsy" Browning
------------------
Sarah Leona Stephens and Ransom M. Meadows are my (maternal) direct ancestors -- if there is a way to find a Creek connection; and I would greatly appreciate help, or suggestions.

Please visit my 'blog' for what little facts I have been able to find up to now (search for Meadows family):

http://www.calcis.net/blog/

Thank you, for your time.

-- Cathy Ann Abernathy
weavercat@gmail.com
taracat@hotmail.com
taracat@calcis.us

Indian agents

I was given information that my ancestor was a Creek woman from Georgia, and that her husband was an Indian Agent.

We have traced some information through her daughter Mary Frances VENTERS (some say Venice) who married James Frederick DAVIS .

I believe that her father's name was Stephen Venters(Ventress) and her mother's name was Jane. They lived in Telfair County Ga in 1820, Putnam County Ga in 1830, and Chambers County, Alabama in 1840.

If Jane were an Indian, and she married a white man, would there be a marriage recorded for them? Is there any way to find out more information on Indian agents? What exactly did they do?

Attached are photos of Mary Frances Davis. The first one is when she was younger. She would have been 1/2 Creek, if the family lore is correct.

Hello,

My name is Kenneth Burton, and I am doing genealogy research in the Chambers & Tallapoosa Co. Alabama area, and also the West Point Georgia.

My great-great aunt was a lady named America Hughley. the Earliest document I have of her (that I am sure about is a marriage record Jan. 1870 from the Chambers County courthouse of her marriage to a man named Sheppard Gilmer. The are both listed as colored.

On the 1870 Chambers County Alabama Census, America and Shepard Gilmer are listed as black.
I do have subsequent Census records;i.e 1900, 1910, 1920 where she is using her maiden name.

She died Mar 12, 1931 at the age of 80 years. Our oral family history is that she was Native American, but I cannot find any other documents with this sir name. One of her nephews, a man name Zeke Hughley was living in the Nash Township, Muscogee County Oklahoma during the 1920's.

The sir name Miller might be associated with Hughley

My husbands uncle was named Garfie Walker, in the 80s or 90s he was appointed the chief of Creek Indians of a certain part of Alabama in Atmore, Alabama. I am looking for information on his Creek heritage is for my husband. We have been unable to obtain any information from his uncle's family. My husband was led to believe that his family are descendents of Big Warrior of Alabama. I would truly appreciate any information to share with my husband. He has cirrhosses of the Liver and may not be able to get the surgery in time to save him. I would be personally appreciative of any help.

Mathew Spikes - 2nd Seminole War - Florida

I recently came across the following entry concerning my GGgrandfather, Matthew Spikes. Matthew's mother, Martha Spikes, is recorded in the 1830 Washington County US Census with 4 sons. Here is the entry:

"Muster Roll of Captain Stephen Richard's company of the MOUNTED FRIENDLY INDIANS, 1st Brigade of the FLORIDA MILITIA, commanded by Gen'l Leigh Reid, ordered into service of the United States by Gov. R. K. Call from the 15th day of October 1837 to the 23rd of April 1838. company enrolled at Walkers' Town, Jackson County, FLORIDA. At Camp Relief, on the 23rd April 1838, Stephen Richards, capt., commander of the company, by signature certified the muster roll to be accurate, just, and true. At the same place and date, D. H. Vinton, Inspector & Mustering Officer, certified by his signature that the muster roll was accurate. Mathew served from 15 October 1837 to 26th November 1837 and from 8 march to 23 April 1838 in the FRIENDLY INDIANS." I have not confirmed this statement and would like to know resources that could provide confirmation.

Does anyone know if all members of the friendly indian troops were, in fact, native american? Or did white settlers also serve in the friendly indian troops? There has been a family story that Matthew had native american heritage, however, this is the first indication that I have found that supports the story.
James A. Knight...Creek?

I have been told that my grandmother had a grandparent who was from the Creek nation. Her parents were Samuel William Penner & Sarah Elizabeth Knight of Arkansas. Her maternal grandfather was James A. Knight (1878-1911)and his mother was Sarah J. (1838-1930). In the 1920 census Sarah E. was living in Sarah J.'s household in Arkansas. A 19 year old young man named Elijah was also in the household. I am not sure if he was Sarah E.'s brother or a cousin. Living on both sides of Sarah J. were Goad families. I know from some cemetery notes of my grandmother's that they are related, but I have not determined how. Does anyone have any informaion on James A. Knight?

Looking for any information regarding George Anderson (1812 - 1863) married to Nancy Kelly (1813 - 1867). THey were Muscogee, reportedly were born and lived in Alabama, removed prior to forced emigration. In Creek Nation West, settled in Concharty town (near what is now Okmulgee, OK), so I am guessing they lived in Conchardee town in what is now Talladega County, AL prior to removal. They were both at least 1/2 blood, but not sure what their other hertage was. I have good information after removal, but nothing prior.

THey had 12 children -- names include Daniel, Annie, Austin, Liza, Lizzie, William, Solomon, Betsy, not sure if any were born before emigration.

Any help appreciated, Steve Miller

Have been unable to find them in any 1850 census. In 1860 they were living in New River County, FL. In the 1870 Census they were living in Fernandina, Nassau County, FL.
Hi,

Our family has been told that our ancestor Nancy Todd (1785-1867) was a full-blood Indian from NE Georgia. Her father was called John Todd and was given land in 1805 (potentially after his death to his widow Elizabeth). In 1813 Nancy's brother Joseph bought the rest of the family's shares of 268 acres of land they inherited from their father on Clark's Creek of Long Creek which we think was in Wilkes County, Georgia but there are several Long Creeks now.

Nancy Todd married a white preacher named Benjamin Hamrick April 26, 1811 in Wilkes County, Georgia. I can find no evidence that she was Creek or Cherokee other than family legend.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Sheila Schmutz, Canada

I have heard that her father was Bowman Hall and her mother Mattie Hall--this may or may not be true. Nancy Catherine Hall married William Brown and had five sons and a daughter.

It was always told to me that my great grandmother, Rebecca Elizabeth Echols was full or one half Cherokee Indian. When I started researching I found a Mandy Childers on the Dawes rolls listed as a Creek. Mandy was the mother of Rebecca Elizabeth Echols. I am hoping to find more of her people. Rebecca Elizabeth Echols married James Monroe Foshee and they lived around Hot Springs, Arkansas. They are buried at the Mt Tabor Cemetery at Glenwood, Arkansas. Any info would be helpful. Thank you, Ellen

I am stuck. My gggrandmother's name was Minory Boreman (Bowaman) born in Georgia about 1832. I found her in the 1850 Marshall County Alabama census living with a family of Garrison. In 1855 she married Martin Van Buren Briscoe and their son, John J was my ggranddad. I have always heard that she was full blooded Creek Indian but I have not had any luck finding information to confirm that. If anyone can help I would appriciate it.

Cloud---Decatur Co., Georgia

I am a decendant of Ransom Cloud,b. 1828 in Ga. Ransom married Mary Ann Donalson in Decatur Co.,1854. Their son Charley Jefferson Cloud, married Eugenia Bennett, daughter of James Franklin and Missouri,(possibly Allen, no proof)Bennett. Charley and Eugenia are my gr-grandparents.

Ransom, apparently was raised by a sibling, Zilpha who married Moses Oliver in 1831. Zilpha was head of house in 1830 with 2 males, one of whom is right age to be Ransom. The other male, I think is M.(Martin), who also shows up in house with Zilpha and Moses.

I have been told all of these people were were Creek.
I am interested in obtaining information on all these people, especially marriage record for James Franklin Bennett. All others were married in Decatur Co.

Zilpha is shown on the 1830 census to be 20 yrs and older.....But all other census records beginning with 1850 and up show her to be only 15 in 1830.

I am very interested in finding their parents. I have been looking for this for a number of years, and cannot even connect them to the other Cloud families of Decatur Co.
People I have disscussed this with say that perhaps their parents were some of the Creek who left before the Removal.

Another strange thing, I have not been able to find anyone who is researching this particular line.

Anyone have information, or just ideas, all will be appreciated and welcome.
Thank you very much.
Gail

Creek Indian from Tenn. to Illinois

Hi!

My name is Marian Warren, and my direct e-mail address is: Mjswspokane@comcast.net

Quite recently, a distant relative told me that one of my gr-gr-gr-grandmothers was full-blooded Creek Indian. She married my gr-gr-gr-grandfather, Alexander Summers. Her name was Clarrisa Lill(e)y.

My Aunt had told me that Clarrisa's maiden name was Overton. Then the other fellow told me the Indian part. I found proof of her maiden name from a short bio of one of Alexander and Clarissa's sons.

Alexander and Clarrisa started out from Sumner Co., TN. They ended up in Franklin Co., Illinois (possible some of the families in surrounding counties of Hamilton and Jefferson.)

Any help anyone could give would be greatly appreciated!!
I have no idea how to begin a search for Indians, Native Americans.

I was also told that Clarissa had been "bought" in TN. And, Alexander's father was supposed to have bought his (think 2nd) wife from the Gov. of TN. I'm somewhat sceptical about this, but who knows?

Hope to hear back from anyone who might know something about this. Thanks!!

Bye for now---Marian Warren

My Alabama families

I have three main lines in my family that I have been told are Native American. My Grandmother Lou Ellen Robinson said on of her Uncles went to apply for the Rolls but was denied. She was born 1924. Now her Mothers maiden name was Bates and I was told they were Creek. The other part of the family is Robinson and Browns. Now I have family that says the Browns were Creek. They came to AL from GA. And the Bates I haven't really traced out of southern AL. I have the Bates back to about 1860's and The Browns 1840's in GA soon moving to AL. Now my Grandmother said the Robinsons were Cherokee. I have no clue where to look anymore and just know that the stories are true.

Brandy

Hello,
I have been doing alot of research on my ancestors. I have alot of enrollment applications where my family enrolled for the cherokee but was denied because it was a "Creek Case".

On some of the applications when asked for Indian name alot of them put Shomack. I was told that this connects to Lynn McGhee? somehow. That his name was Shomack/Shumac?

Also on the applications they were all witnessed by McGhees stating they knew the Poston family to be creek indians. Does anyone know more about this? Also one app said James Postons father (my ggggrandfather) was killed at Burnt Corn.

I would appreciate any help with this info.
Anthony Lock

NEED HELP FOR CREEK NATION MEMBERSHIP

TO THE ,
CHIEFS , ELDERS , TRIBAL COUNCIL
AND THE MEMBERS OF THE GREAT CREEK NATION .
AND OTHERS WHO MIGHT BE ABLE TO ASSIST ME .

GREETINGS .

This will be a rather long message , please indulge me by taking the time to read it .

I know that I am in the bloodline of the creek nation . My problem is that after well over two years of searching I am not able to produce the required legal information that would satisfy the creek nation to where I would be accepted into the nation . My purpose for seeking admission is not to make any claims to the tribe or the federal government for any kind of compensation or personal gain .

Since I was a very young child I was told that I and my siblings were forth blood Indian . At the time this meant little to me but now as I grow older ( 72 ) it has become very important in that I would be very proud to be placed on the official rolls of the nation and more importantly to be able to pass this heritage and ancestry on to my children and grand children so that they will officially be able to carry on this noble blood line .

I have always had a unexplained, until recently ,a very kindred and close feeling toward all native Americans … as a youngster I spent most of my time roaming over the blue ridge and Allegheny mountains , living off the land as best I could and learning about nature .. This I attribute to my Indian heritage . I used as my guidelines the writings of “ Ellsworth Jeager “, a full blood member of the Delaware tribe who published a series of books entitled “ wild wood wisdom “. although my activities have slowed due to age I still hold a great love and respect for nature and the outdoors , I still hunt , fish and camp when ever possible .

While conducting my search I learned and believe it to be true that MARY JANE CHEOTAH, THE DAUGHTER OF RUBIN CHEOTAH was born around 1840 -- 1845 in GEORGIA . Rubin was killed when Mary Jane was very young . She was sold or traded to the family of Walter Hovis in Vernango county Pennsylvania where she adopted the hovis sur name and worked as a domestic servant .

She married another servant named Jessie who had also taken the Hovis name .

When they became freedmen they returned to the southern states , any further history of Jessie is long lost , however mary Jane was listed on the dawes rolls in 1906 and after several undocumented marriages died in 1918 probably in Oklahoma..
One of those marriages was supposedly to a Willis f. hovis who traces forward to my family tree however no further mention of mary Jane can be found which unfortunately has brought me to a inconclusive end to my long time search .

As happens very often internal family strife steps in which was the case in my family several generations back …. Any records that might have existed then have been lost leaving later generations without records of their roots

I have hired a private ancestry researcher to trace my family , the final report does in fact tie me to the creek nation ( attached )… I have also submitted to DNA testing that conclude that I am of American Indian blood lines ( attached ).

I have come to the end of the trail in my search for my creek nation connections , although I know in my heart that I am of your tribe I can not prove it and I must accept the fact that I probably never will be able to do so…. This to me is the ultimate disappointment of my life .

The greatest gift I could ever leave to my descendants is the knowledge that they carry the same bloodlines of the first Americans on the north American continent .

I will submit along with this letter the information I have gathered , I will respectfully ask that you read it and determine if there is any way that you can help me in my quest to become associated or affiliated with your great nation in any way no matter how minor .

my big problem is that I simply cant come up with the information that is required to even be considered for membership ,,, I have spoken with people who have far more data than I do and they have been rejected so I would say my chances are slim to none .

please don't view this as a complaint but I think it is very sad that persons like myself who are positive in their own hearts and minds that they are of Indian decent but cant meet the requirements that are set down by a tribe to be accepted .

I am fearful that the Indian heritage I have will forever be lost unless it is recorded in some archive , some where . if anyone should for what ever reason research my heritage after I have gone to another world there will be no record that I was in anyway attached to the native American culture , and that is very sad .

I believe that the spirit and soul of a person lives so long as at least one person remembers them , after that the spirit dies and the person never existed .

over thousands of years many races, civilizations and cultures have vanished without a trace , this could be the fate of the native American culture if steps are not taken to insure that the present civilization and those that follow will always know that we were here .

how long will it take for every living native American to pass on ? from what I read their are more dying than are being accepted , how long will it be before there is no more official written records of any living Indians ? I worry about that .

In my heart and mind I shall always consider myself a member of the GREAT CREEK NATION .

“ MAY THE GREAT SPIRITS GUIDE YOUR FOOTSTEPS IN UNKNOWN PLACES

SINCERELY AND WITH GREAT RESPECT ,,

RONALD F. I have no idea what happened to the photo or who she was .

I have been researching my family tree ( HOVIS ) and came across the following entry but can find on further information .

FYI Found Mary Jane Hovis was full Creek
Author: sadoo Date: 8 Nov 2000 6:49 PM GMT
Post Reply | Mark Unread Report Abuse Print Message
I have just been informed that Mary Jane Hovis
b.abt 1850 in N.C. Hovis
19806 Scott Hill drive
Hagerstown , Maryland.

Dear Mr. Hovis.

Thank you so very much for your interest in the possibility of your having ancestors who are members of the great Creek nation .

From the volume of information you have forwarded to tribal chiefs and our research groups we are happy to inform you that we are 99% sure that you have creek Indian blood as also do your siblings , same generation cousins and all children of your generation . Our research tells us that you and all other members of your family of a like generation are forth blood creek descendants .

Each succeeding generation would genetically subtract each generation by two which means that your off spring are sixth blood , your grand children would be eighth blood and so on so long as there was no inbreeding or a spouse on either side were of full creek blood ,,,, this is not indicated in your family tree data you submitted to us .

We will be sending you a full report on the study we have conducted in the near future .

Regarding Mary Jane Hovis : we believe she was born Mary Jane Cheotah between 1840 and 1845, her father was Ruben Cheotah , there is no record of her mother .

They lived primarily in Georgia along the flint and Chattahoochee rivers , there were two separate bands of creeks who lived along the rivers , on band were called the upper band and the other the lower band , Mary Jane was part of the lower band .
These two bands were enemies and engaged in many wars and battles , in one of these battles Ruben was killed and Mary Jane was captured and became a slave , the dates of all this action is unclear ..

Mary Jane was then sold or traded as a domestic slave to the family estate of Walter Hovis in either Vernango or Franklin counties in Pennsylvania where she adopted the Hovis surname as was the practice .

She married another full blood creek slave who had taken the name of Jessie Hovis

After being declared freedmen they returned to North Carolina , Jessie who was a itinerate worker traveled where the work was , they lived in many locations .

No further records of Jessie hovis could be found but we can safely assume he died because records do show that Mary Jane hovis married Will F. Hovis in about 1906

Mary Jane shows up on the Dawes final rolls of the creek nation in 1906 where she received a monthly annuity from the U.S. government which verified that she was a full blood creek Indian .. She died in 1918 probably in Oklahoma at around 70 years of age .

We hope that you will find this information helpful and we believe that you are indeed a forth blood member of the great creek nation ..

Sincerely :

Pettie J . Dawson
Research staff ,

Idalou , Texas

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

January 11, 2007

Dear Mr. Ronald F. Hovis.

In my haste I failed to transmit the final entry in our Hovis study, please excuse my error.

Willis F. Hovis who married Mary Jane Hovis about 1906 traces to several other Hovis family members in that next generation .

Anna Mary, John A., and William Francis who we believe to be your grand father and the nephew of Mary Jane Hovis who we have determined is of full creek extraction .

This would complete and close the circle which would explain with 99.9% certainty that William Francis Hovis was at least one half creek Indian which would translate to your being at least of forth generation creek blood .

Again I apologize for the delay .

Sincerely:

Pettie J . Over the time period you describe we judge this to be a substantial percentage and could be of sufficient quantity to gain membership in various Indian nations depending on the tribe’s constitution and bylaws .

Anyone who was born into the same generation as yourself would have the same D.N.A. markers as you , any following generations would continue to carry the same markers and patterns but the blood percentages would be of a lesser amount .

We hope that this information has answered your inquiries to your satisfaction and we will be most happy to assist you in any other manner that we are able .

Once again , thank your for your patronage .

SINCERELY :

RICHARD M. DUGAN,
CHIEF , TESTING DIVISION ,
GENETRACK BIOLABS

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN .

I am a 72 year old American citizen , since I was a young child I have been told by the elders in my family that myself and my siblings were of forth blood native Indian .

I can recall seeing pictures and Indian objects in my grand parents home that depicted a Indian nation …. At the time they were of little importance to me but now they have become very important since I am now trying to locate my Indian ancestry .

After two years of research I have found information that I am of the CREEK BLOODLINE .
The path has led me to MARY JANE HOVIS ,…..
we believe she was born Mary Jane Cheotah between 1840 and 1845, her father was Ruben Cheotah , there is no record of her mother . We also believe that Mary Jane was orphaned at a very early age and was sent to Pennsylvania as a domestic servant .

She returned to North Carolina where she married Jessie Wilson , later she married Willis F. Hovis who brought forth four off spring one of whom became my grand father, William Francis Hovis who then settled in Maryland .

Mary Jane was accepted into the Creek nation in 1906 as full blood creek and is listed in the Dawes rolls ., she died in 1918 in Oklahoma .

This might sound a little strange to you but as far back as I can recall I have always had a kindred love for the native American peoples …. When the opportunity presented itself I would visit historical Indian sites ……. I would always get the feeling that I belonged there and was a part of that history .
I have adopted the theory that the spirits and gods of the native American blood I carry is speaking to me and I am sure of it , no one could ever change my mind .

I firmly believe in god and his son Jesus , I also believe in guardian angels . I have been in life threatening situations three times in my life , once during the Korean war ... I was guided out of those by what I thought were my guardian angels ..... but now that I know that I am of native American heritage I must wonder if my survival was not due to the intervention of the great Indian spirits who watch over us .

Although I would be extremely honored I am sure that I could not provide the required information that would indicate that I were a proven member of the creek nation , however , I would be honored if I were to be able to obtain some sort of card , document or other means that would indicate that I and my children did in fact carry creek blood within our veins .we are 99.9 % sure this is the case...
We would be honored beyond words and description.

Could you , would you be able to direct me to a person or a organization where I might obtain this confirmation .

Thank you in advance for your kind attention and any assistance you might provide .

SINCERELY :

RONALD F.
Apalachee Creek Indians

I was told that my g-g-g-greatgrandfather Martin and was an Apalachee Indian from the Florida pandhandle. Land was deeded to him from a french Heugonot; location unknown. It is believed the Martins moved from La and into Florida. My g-grandfather was Francis Osceola Martin of 1878. His fatehr Francis Marion Martin and his mother, Bird-Martin. Geoorgia Hall, married to Francis Osceola, was a Cherokee/Irish woman whose mother was full-blooded Cherokee and a medicine woman.
My grandfather wrote down the names of the descendents to John Martin married to Viney Martin of 1823 (Apalachee Indian. My grandpa Ronald Marion Martin also knew where to find the arrowheads and shards of pottery in Jackson County, FL. He showed me where the family hid in Florida Caverns in a particular cave surrounded by folliage. He also knew where a couple of shipwrecks in Vero Beach. I have a newspapper clipping of one where lots of gold was found. It seems the Martin family names the children after one another which makes the search much harder.
If you have any info, please contact me at Jeanniepappas@yahoo.com
Thanks!
poston, macks, semoice

I am still trying to find any family info. My ggg grandpa was James Poston. His ec # was 11205. HIs daughter Charity Poston was my gg grandma she married Noah Macks. Noah Macks as well as James Poston and his wife Elizabeth Leach are all listed as ancestors on Billie Ford Sniders 1950 register of Creek Indians E. of Mississippi. I have no other info on Noah except he married Charity in Escambia Co Fl. in 1854. Noah also served in Civil war. Supposedly he deserted the war. ??. I see a Charity Macks in Escambia Co Fl. with a husband named John. I tend to believe this is Noah becasue they are living next door to Charitys brother John. I have the Guion applications of Andrew "Jack" Macks and John Poston both were denied becasue they were creek cases. I also have Dollie Poston Rollins who said her family Indian name is Shomack which I have foudn may be Semoice. Also another relative Virgie Poston says the same on her app which was in the 70s. KNowing that the government has given my ggggrandpa a ec # 11205 is great but I would love to know more info. Also James states on his census info in 1850 and 1860 that he is from South CArolina. His mom lives with him in both census once as Frances and once as Currie. I would love to find more on NOah Harjo Macks as well as go back farther on James Poston. Oh James was born abt 1830. Sorry for being so longwinded.

Thanks so kindly,
Deanna

I am searching for information that connects my ancestry with Lower Muscogee Creek heritage.

My GGG Grandfather was Henry Dorch b. 1815 in GA married to Susan Emily (surname unknown)/GG Grandfather Thomas H. Dorch b.1844 in FL married Mary Jane Barber in Decatur Co. GA in 1868. G Grandmother Emily G. Dorch b. 1873 in GA. Emily married William Henry Foster b. 1866 in AL or FL. Emily and Henry were married in 1893 in Washington Co. FL. Family history indicates that these ancestors are connected to Ocmulgee Creek, Brace Tribe (cannot find any information about Ocmulgee Creek or Brace Tribe).

In addition, my ancestry also includes GGGG Grandfather Thomas Anderson married to Elizabeth (not confirmed), GGG Grandfather John Anderson b. 1835 in AL married to Roxanne or Roxyan (surname unknown), GG Grandmother Mary Anderson b. 1868 in AL, G Grandmother Alvina (Viney) Anderson b. 1886 in FL who married Oscar Simmons b. 1881 in FL. Viney and Oscar were married in 1901 in Washington County FL. These ancestors are reported to be Lower Muscogee Creek, Holmes Tribe (once again, I'm stuck).

Any information that could be helpful in continuing my search is welcomed.

According to my grandmother's records the Franklins were originally from SC and migrated to South Alabama. They have ties to the Dees, Sizemores, Hubbards, Bryars, and Miles families. I need proof of Elizabeth Sizemore being married to Thomas Jefferson Franklin Sr. According to grandmother's records she was the daughter of Arthur Sizemore and Mary Polly Bailey.
I am a descendant of James B. Ward. My father and sister were registered with the above mentioned group in a settlement which was finalized in the 70's. I was not registered because I was not born at the time the settlement was first initiated (I guess in the 50's). I would like to find out if this group is still in existence or if it has changed names since. Any information would be appreciated. Thank you

Indian Tribes around Coker, Alabama and Tuscaloosa, Alabama

Hello,
This is my first query to post here. I was in touch with a cousin this past week who gave me alittle bit of information about my GGrandmother and her people. Her name was Amanda DeMara Parentine Armstrong. She was born August 12,1867. I have been told her fathers name was Jack Armstrong but this is not confirmed. Amanda married George Ancel Parker in Shelby County, Alabama in 1887. I have a list of all of there 13 children and lots of information about the rest of the clan but nothing about her parents. My Grandfather always said that she was Indian but was not for sure where she was raised. The couisn that I spoke with this week recalled his mother saying something about Coker, Alabama which is just west of Tuscaloosa. he said Coker was the name of the Indians that were in that area, hence the name of the town. I have never herd of the name and wanted to ask someone about it. Can anyone shed any light toward the peolpe who lived in this area? Any help will be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Jeff Parker
My husband's family insists there is Native American blood in their family, through "Little Granny" i.e. Lydeo Myrtle Walker, whose parents were H. S. "Choate" Walker and Martha Emily Word. The family lived in the Culman Co and Lauderdale Cos., ALA area for many years. Little Granny would acknowledge that the blood was there, but wouldn't talk about what tribe, so am uncertain about this info. "Choate" Walker's name MAY be Hamilton Sheridan Walker, but this, too, is unproven. Lydeo Myrtle Walker married Charles Perry Parum, and the then moved to TX - later AR. Any info would be appreciated.

I agree!!! We need to research this and not go on about what can't be proven. If you don't like what answers are being proven then please find another site...because evidently you already have your mind made up any way. We just want to find out the REAL truth. I know what Ralph has said and he has driven to Slocomb to my aunts house to try and prove his DNA theory. I have also read Jerry's essay and it has too many gaps. So lets commit to filling in those gaps and find the real truth. They didn't just fall from the sky one day they were born to some one and somewhere someone knows the whole story. I propose that all the online "Cousins" plan one real big family reunion and get everyone together and let the stories be passed around and see if we can prove who the parents were once and for all.
Kathy
