Matilda Katie Pearson Waterford - Native American??

Surnames: Pearson Waterford
Hi Everybody! I'm new to Ancestry.com. I am assisting my sister-in-law with research on my husband's side of the family. They both remember stories of Katie Pearson Waterford (also known as Matilda Katie Pearson Waterford). And they remember seeing old pictures of a man reported to be a family member in full Native American Indian dress (full head dress and all). I can't find much further back from Katie. Her parents seem to be Jacob and Melissa Pearson, but I don't find any Native American. Also Katie is mentioned as Mulatto in some records and Negro or Black in other records. Perhaps Jacob Pearson was Native American? I also saw one census that was taken on the Choctaw reservation (or I thought any way). So perhaps he was Choctaw?? Or perhaps they just lived there??? My father-in-law's father (Cato Albert Waterford) was VERY fair complected (and it is reported that his mother was as well). So perhaps they were African American and Native American??

Any help anyone can give me would be really appreciated!!

Kate Waterford (PS - ironically I found out that my husband's great-grandmother and I share the same name!! Is it a sign that I'm supposed to be the family historian?! :))
