It is my understanding that my ggg-grandfather James McNair owned a plantation in Knox County, TN. I don't have access to land records and local information as I live in Arkansas and my unable to travel very far. I would be so grateful for anyone with this capability, while searching their own material, keep the name James McNair in mind as to his property. In fact there was a McNair Cemetery on the plantation. Time frame was 1700 and 1800s.

Thanks for listening!
Peggy McNair Batterton

Jasper County GA, Robinson & Kelly, Orange Grove SC

Thanks for your response Gary.
I did some research, and called around to a local library and got a couple of historic maps, and then compared them with current maps to get an estimated location. I now know from records that the land was comprehensive of a large area, and it was somewhere near Murder Creek, it was west of Shady Dale and north of Monticello. The main location that at least one time was the main Robinson house and now includes the Robinson family cemetery is just off Aldridge Road north of Liberty Church Road, about 6 miles north of Monticello in Jasper County. I know from family records that the Robinsons were in the same area, farming same land, presumably for at least two full, and possibly three or four, generations. So! That is a good start.

I have some historic documents & chapters from county books that show there was a road that went through the area from VA to TX, and it gives some information on early settlers but does not mention these family names. There was a Cornelious Robinson in the area at the same time, but at this time there is no known relationship to him. We are open to learning more however, so if anyone can show a connection for this family it would be great!

I have the Robinson family on census records in 1850 Jasper County (all members), and presumably the same family in 1840 and 1830. John Robinson was name of the father and the grandfather of my Dr William C Robinson. He had
siblings: Martha who married Samuel Wilburn, James C, and John Robinson. It seems at least every adult child in every Robinson generation 1750-1900 had a male child they named John, and so it is hard to prove exactly who was whom unless other info and ages are present!

I have a will from 1858 for Dr William C Robinson, and I have a shorter will for his father John in 1857. The wills do give wife & children's names and some of the slave's names and ages, and they do enumerate some of the holdings (a harpsichord, a medical library, beds and chairs, etc.) Neither will has a comprehensive inventory included, and neither will has anything about farming/fieldwork/business or professional information of any kind in the actual court documents I have found other than to say the heirs will continue.

QUESTIONS:
I do not have any records of what they farmed, or where, or how they traded goods and services.

I am looking for any records of what happened to the property and immediate area (economy, people, anything) before, during, and after the Civil War (1850-1870.)

I do not know how or where the connections with the Kelly family were established. (The old Jasper County property/settlers map says "Robinson and Kelly" across the area described above, north of Monticello and south of Murder Creek, at "Robinson Creek." )

I am looking for any connections with the Morgan family, who were also in Newton and Talbot Counties. Sarah F. Morgan married Dr William C Robinson in 1848 Jasper Co.
Unknown parents, probable brother is Asa Morgan, possible father is Hiram Morgan.)

I am looking for connections with a "Dr" Allen P. Morris b 1821 in NC or GA.(He married the widow Mrs Sarah F. Robinson in 1859.)

I am looking for connections with Dr. Amos W. McCoy who was a physician, and other McCoy family. (Allen Morris may have trained with him in 1850 Montgomery, AL, and his family is from GA pre 1850.)

I am looking for anyone who has knowledge of Orange Grove Plantation in SC, in order to check on possible relationship with the Robinson landowners in Jasper Co GA 1840-1860 (John, John L., James C., William, etc.)

I am looking for anyone with connections to these families or places in order to share information.

I appreciate any help or ideas as to where to look further.
Thanks for your help!
Diane
Missouri Plantations Destroyed

In only one week, two historic mid Missouri plantations are destroyed. One by fire and the other demolished.

Yesterday, the historic Prairie View plantation, also known as Crestmead, Cooper County, Missouri, was severely damaged by fire. The historic plantation was built c. 1857-1859 by John Taylor and once encompassed 4,600 acres with 19 enslaved African Americans. The slaves lived in 4 slave quarters, and one of these buildings still stands today. The property was purchased c. 1900 by the Betteridge family, who still owns it. The large Italianate house that burned was the center of this grand estate.

Last week the historic 1850s “Minor W. and Elizabeth Obannon” plantation big house was bulldozed by new owners making way for commercial development. This historic big house was once the center of a grand 700+ acre plantation that held as many as 29 African American slaves in bondage.

Located in the heart of Missouri’s slave and hemp belt, in a region historically called “Little Dixie,” Minor Obannon was the embodiment of the typical southern gentleman yeoman planter building his brick big house and plantation to mirror other slave estates located all across the Upper South. Migrating to Missouri from Virginia, Minor was a prominent lawyer in Saline County, as well as a land speculator, planter, slave owner, entrepreneur, and civic activist in local political and social affairs. In 1848, he received recognition for his defense of Mrs. Aurelia Renick who was accused of shooting a man after she was assaulted in her home. Mrs. Renick was acquitted, as was her husband who they later charged. Obannon also participated and directed local public meetings during the Mexican American and Civil Wars, and like many in the area he sided with the slave owners of the South.

The Saline County plantation had its beginning in the 1850s, subsequent to Minor Obannon’s marriage to Elizabeth Payne in 1847 in the County. By 1850, Minor and his wife owned a substantial amount of prime Saline County real estate along with 19 slaves managed by the estate’s overseer Sydney Smith. As the new decade passed the Obannon family grew wealthy and by 1860 owned over 1000 acres of farm land and city properties along with lucrative coal and mineral rights in the County. The Obannon plantation encompassed some 700 + acres and was valued at $55,000 in 1860, which made him a millionaire of his day. He was also consistently listed among Saline County’s largest tax payers.

Like many of the Little Dixie farmers and planters, much of Minor and Elizabeth’s property was held in the form of human slaves. The majority of the Obannon slaves were of a working age. The slaves lived in the Saline County estate’s 4 slave quarters located on the property and managed by the plantation’s overseer William Elgin. Living also at the Obannon’s farm village were their daughters, the overseer’s family, and an Irish farm laborer named James Coffin.

After the Civil War the Obannon family moved to Obannon, Jefferson County, Kentucky, and in 1868 sold the grand Southern estate to Melvin and Mary R. Godman of Kentucky. Like the Obannons, the Godmans were also slave owners back in old Kentucky. Melvin was originally from Palmyra, Missouri, where his father owned a plantation and slaves. At an early age, Melvin moved to Kentucky where he “dealt extensively in live stock and slaves” and became a well known Bourbon County, Kentucky entrepreneur. During the Civil War Melvin entered into the Confederate service, as did his son W. C. Godman. W. C. Godman was also from Saline County, moving there after the Civil War. The son, while in Confederate service, took part in several engagements and was captured, imprisoned, and released on many occasions. At one point he was incarcerated at Camp Douglas in Chicago, which many historic scholars refer to as the Andersonville of the North. At the close of the war, W. C. Godman was a body guard for Confederate President Jefferson Davis just prior to his capture by Union forces. Melvin Godman maintained the plantation’s village appearance, and living on the estate were his wife and 6 children, school teacher, a Kentucky lawyer boarder, two ex slaves, farm laborers and an English house servant.

Over the next 130 years the estate and big house were owned by other known figures in Saline County’s history, such as local business owner J. Van Dyke. Other owners also farmed the rich prairie soils, but in recent years the house fell into disrepair as a rental property, a state in which it served as recently as the Fall of 2007. Located on the fringes of northwest Marshall, the historic site is now in a commercial area that the city has been developing over the past decade.

Fortunately, Obannon and his wife signed a prenuptial agreement that lists her slaves by name and age. If anyone is looking for Payne or Obannon line, please let me know.

For additional information, contact Gary Gene Fuenfhausen:

garyfuenfh@aol.com or littledixie.net

Thanks.
Seeking a list of plantations in Edgefield, South Carolina starting circa 1800. I've identified six families in Edgefield, South Carolina - four of the six I've been able to trace back to the 1870 census. As of that census, the families resided in the following townships: Hibler, Washington, Grant & Blocker.

Any assistance is GREATLY appreciated.

I am looking for my ggggrandmother Elizabeth "Betsy" Patterson who married Sandy Jenkins after the civil war. I am told that Betsy was a slave on the Patterson Plantation but can find no record of her. Betsy and Sandy had at least one child, Denitia. Denitia married Samuel Trice and they had several children, one of whom is my grandfather's mother, Enna Trice. Enna married James Davis. So, if you know anything about the Trice's, Jenkins' Davis' or Patterson's from Durham/Patterson Township, North Carolina, please let me know.

Plantation records from Calhoun Co AL?

There is a story in my family that my ancestor Francis Marion Burgess was a "row boss" or overseer of the freed workers on a plantation after the Civil War, probably in Calhoun County Alabama.

There was supposedly an altercation between Burgess and one of the workers, and if the story is true, would have probably been recorded in the documents of the plantation. This would have occurred between 1865-1870

Without knowing the name of the plantation, only a place, and approximate date, is there a way to search available records and where should I look?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions.

http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&...

Need to find the Deans in the Habersham area around the 1850's or earlier. I have a Sophia Dean that was born in 1836 in Knox Co. Ky., but I don't think its the one I looking for. My Sophie married a William Jackson Dean. They had 3 sons that I know of . Sloan, Wade and Julius. They were all born in the late 1800's. I believe they lived around Chopped Oak in Stephens Co. Ga.. The 3 boys had a stepmother named Annie. I know she was married before she married William because she had some children of her own.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Mamamoose36

Rose Cottage Plantation (or Farm), Elizabeth City County, Wythe District, now Hampton, Virginia

I am looking for anyone who remembers or has information about what was once a 500 acre Plantation called Rose Cottage, located on what is now Saunders Road, Betz Lane, and the Big Bethel Reservoir. The original land was mostly in Elizabeth City county but also partly in Warwick county.
The land was owned until 1870 by Samuel Cook and James Kellum, who sold the property to George Baines Jones and later his son, Thornton F. Jones. Carrington Wright later owned part of it in 1936. The 500 acres were split into parcels over the years, including a large piece taken by the US Gov't for the reservoir. Parts were owned by WH Mitchell and his wife, Clara V. Mitchell, and Thomas Saunders.
I am looking for any photos, documentation, stories, anything.
In particular, looking for old photos of the farmhouse built by Wright in 1936 and later occupied by August and Georgina Betz for whom the street is named. Finding descendents of these folks would be helpful.
Thanks for any information.

I have an ancestor, Thomas Sutton, who sprang parentless from the soil of Franklin County, MS, in 1820. According to family legend he came from the Carolinas where his parents owned a sugar plantation. He had a disagreement with his family and left home. In the 1830 MS census he stated that he was age 20-40 and was foreign-born, not naturalized. He owned a sawmill and grist mill. He married Phebe Humphries in Jefferson County and had 5 children: Stephen, John, Thomas, Margaret, and an unknown daughter. Was there ever a sugar plantation in South Carolina? I thought they were all in Louisiana.

Hello,
I am trying to find out how I may go about locating Plantations near or in the Waco, Texas area. I am researching my African-American family with the surname of Lewis and I was told by family members that the majority of my Paternal family were all living on a Plantation in or near Waco. (During and after slavery).

Is there a book I could order or a site I can visit regarding Plantations with the Lewis surname in that part of Texas?

Hilliard married and had one child in the 1880 census. He and an older brother Samuel built a home in downtown Fernandina Beach that is still standing. I would love any clue on this line.

I have hit a brick wall in researching my ancestors to a slave plantation, in AL. Their names first show up on 1870 census in Mobile county, AL. named spelled Brasly, my grandfather was b.1871 in Possum Bend or Camden, AL which are both in Wilcox county. On the 1880 census the name is spelled Brasley and it shows Mobile county. On other census the name is spelled Brazley/ Beazley/etc.

I found Brazley/Beazley, listed in Coosa county, AL on the 1860 census, who maybe slave owners. One listing also is for a Salley Patterson, 1860 census whose daughter is married to a Larkin Brazley. I think she was a slave holder also. On the 1850 census, she is listed as Sarah Patterson in Coosa, Coosa District.

How do I find out if this maybe the slave holder I'm looking for?
Is there somewhere I can write or find it on the internet?

Anne
