Alexander McLeod came from the Isle of Skye (year unknown - circa 1800?) with two sons: Angus McLeod(1781-1860) and his brother and my 2nd Great Grandfather, Daniel D. McLeod(1783-1856). They settled in Roberson county, NC.

I cannot find any information about Alexander - can someone help?

Thanks,

Douglas Robert McLeod

Hello, I'm also researching this family for a book that I am writing about their granddaughter who was a famous fashion designer. I would love to connect with you to find out more about the Tompkins family. Could I ask where you found the marriage records?

Thanks!
Margaret P

She married Stephen Gibbons 18 Jul 1878 in Barbour County, Alabama & had 1 more son, James Thomas "Jimmy" Gibbons.

My grandmother, Georgian Miller Cook, had told her daughters that Caroline had a twin sister, Emmaline, who married Hiram Cook & had 3 sons, Peter J Cook, William Thomas "Tom" Cook & George W Cook. William Thomas "Tom" Cook had a son, William Thomas "Will" Cook, Jr. who married my grandmother, Georgian (that would make them 3rd cousins, if this correct!). I have found no records for Emmaline at this time.

Any help appreciated!!

Shirley Hart Dillingham
Katy, Texas

Hi, and thank you for the response. My wife, Jane Miller Roberts is related to the Casey line and I am looking for some kind of proof that will tie John Sr. to Lemuel. I have Alto Lee Casey's input and the entries on Ancestry.com. Also can tie Jane down to Lemuel, but having problems with Lemuel to John Sr. Also have the data to qualify Jane for DAR via Jeremimah Casey if I can get that final proof. Thanks again.
from Jacksonville FL Times Union of 6 March 1919:
Eufaula, Ala, March 5- Four bodies have been taken from the ruins of the McRae building, which collapsed during a storm of tornado proportions this afternoon. Two others are known to be buried in the ruins of this building.
Bodies recovered are those of EJ Searcy, a broker, and Rev WP Dickinson, and two unidentified men.
SF Lawton, a traveling insurance man from Atlanta, is known to be buried in the ruins, according to Eufaula people as is Dr JL Adams, an optician. Both men are believed to be dead. Rescue parties are trying to clear the debris, working by lantern light and by the lights from automobiles.
Several negroes are known to haven been killed during the storm by the collapse of downtown buildings and other buildings.
Among the injured are:
JC McRae, proprietor of the mercantile business operating in the McRae building; Mrs Emma Willie Northrup, Miss --- Wells and John Whitlock, a jeweler.
Rev Dickinson, one of the victims, is a Methodist pastor.
Atlanta, March 5- SF Lawton reported killed in a tornado at Eufaula, Ala. late today, was a traveling representative of the Southeastern Underwriters Association, it was said at headquarters tonight. Reports reached the headquarters that five others besides Lawton had been killed. Lawton's home was New Bedford Mass.
Until daylight permits a survey of the city it will be impossible to accurately estimate the damage in today's storm, not one tonight being in a position to estimate except on structures known to have been wrecked.
There has been a loss of life, but the number of dead will not be known before daylight.
EJ Searcy's body was extricated from the ruins of the McRae building at 7pm tonight.
Dr WP Dickinson, Dr JL Adams and SF Lawton, were reported to be under the McRae store debris.
The city is in darkness and chaos reigns. There is no telephone connection and only one railroad wire in operation. Trees are strewn over the streets.
The Catholic church is a total loss.
Stores of JH Whitelock (sic) and JC McRae are a total loss. Lampley's three store buildings and an automobile warehouse are a total loss.
The Bluff city Inn, the Ross Hardware Company's store, J Oppenheimer's store are badly damaged.
Born about 1825 in South Carolina and moved to Barbour. According to the obit for his son Calvin Baker, the family was the original family of Baker Hill. Robert Ellison is listed as Ellison on the 1850 census. I could assume that the Robert Baker who is 60 on the 1850 census could be his father, but do not want to assume. Any help on the original Baker clan to Barbour would be helpful. Thanks

I can't prove that Mary Susan was the daughter of Elias Wilkes. However, I can put the family of Elias Wilkes in the area of Houston Co., Ga at the time she married Middleton Brooks.

Thomas Usher Wilkes:
"During the author's pastorate in Macon, Georgia, in the spring of 1831, T. U. Wilkes, his mother and sister presented themselves before the Conference with letters of dismission from a church in South Carolina, of which State he was a native. He was then about twenty years of age. His father, en route from South Carolina to Alabama, finding the roads in an almost impassable condition, concluded to stop near Macon until such time as he could prosecute his journey to better advantage, which he did the ensuing winter. Being a mill-wright by trade, he and the subject of this sketch undertook the erection of a mill on Walnut creek, three miles above Macon, for the brothers Austin and Thomas Ellis. Those excellent men ever after held T. U. Wilkes in the highest esteem. Indeed, a cordial friendship then sprang up between them which lasted throughout their lives.

He had been "licensed" by his mother church in South Carolina, and, though his education was quite limited, and his appearance, on the whole, ungainly, yet such was his thirst for knowledge, his fervid zeal, and his unostentatious piety, as to give strong hope of future usefulness. With this hope, the writer encouraged him to attend school at least two years, and pledged his own lean purse for his support, should such a resort be necessary. The project for starting Mercer Institute was then on foot, but Wilkes had no time to lose. So, at the instance of the writer, Rev. A. Sherwood, then residing near Eatonton, Putnam county, agreed to receive him into his family and give him his board and tuition, on condition that he would work half his time. With this condition he faithfully complied, working at his trade, (that of a carpenter,) in the field, or wherever his services were required. This arrangement lasted only one year, and the following winter, (the second Monday in January, 1833,) Wilkes was one of the "faithful few" who were at the opening of Mercer Institute. Here he continued two years or more, having acquired a very respectable knowledge of English and Latin; and when he retired from the institute, he carried with him the respect and confidence of Rev. B. M. Sanders, the principal, than whom there have been few better judges of human nature. This was also true of Rev. Dr. Sherwood, it being well known to the writer that Wilkes was ever afterwards held in high esteem by those great and good men." From "Georgia Baptists..." which is on Ancestry.com.

T. U. Wilkes is Thomas Usher Wilkes, all of the sons of Elias had the middle name Usher. Unfortunately, the name of the church isn't given. Thomas Usher Wilkes was in the first class of Mercer College. If the name of the church had been given, it would be a clue to where to look for records. The book, also, does not name the sister who had requested dismission from the SC church.

What it does prove is the family of Elias Wilkes was in the vicinity of Houston Co., Ga at the time Mary Susan Wilkes married Middleton Brooks.

James Wilkes has mail at Perry, Houston Co., Ga (Macon Telegraph, Feb. 11, 1832) Is this James Usher Wilkes, son of Elias?

Georgia Telegraph, Macon 4/10/1833 lists Elias Wilks as having mail in Perry, Ga. (Houston Co., GA) Same on July 17, 1833.

I haven't found any reference to a will or estate record of Elias Wilkes.

The Pike Co., AL library has the old county records for Pike Co., AL. The library has a very helpful staff. You might give them a call and ask what records they have for Elias Wilkes.
Looking for proof that Mary Susan Wilkes Brooks was the daughter of Elias Wilkes and his wife Hannah Usher Wilkes. She was married to Middleton Brooks. Her possible sibling was Jesse Usher Wilkes. Mary and Middleton were married August 29, 1833 in Houston County, Georgia. They were living in Barbour County in 1850 as was Elias Wilkes and Middleton's mother, Nancy Brooks.
Did Elias leave a will or was there a probate on his estate?

I am looking for information about George W. Lewis and Mary McLean. He was a Sgt in the CSA and buried in Bethel Baptist in Newton, Dale but he and his family lived in Barbour before the war. From the 1850 census, it looks like she MAY have been the youngest of Hugh McLean/Margaret McLean Sr BUT she was born in New York. Both Hugh/Margaret and rest of family listed as being from Scotland.

I would also like to know more about Hugh McLean Sr. and his family in Barbour. It looks like his first land purchase there was in 1851. Was he a brother of John, Alexander etc McLean? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
