Most of my Alabama ancestors are from Bibb Co. I am looking for information on the above surnames, especially Mize, Stocks, Perry, Pool and Tedder. My earliest Mize in Bibb Co. is Burrol Harvil Mize, b 1827, prob. Dallas Co. but married Nancy E. Pool in 1858 in Bibb Co. Nancy E. Pool is the daughter of John H. Poole and Hetty Marcus. Their son, John Harvil Mize, m. Charity Mary Elizabeth Perry on 12 Jan 1880. She was the daughter of Joseph Calvin Perry and Frances Holder. John and Charity's son Birl John Wesley Mize married Janie Stocks on 6 Feb 1910 in #2 town Blocton, Bibb Co. Janie's parents were William Matthew Stocks and Rosanna Jane Hocutt.

In a different line, Newton Jasper Yeager married Lucinda Tedder on 20/21 July 1858, Bibb Co. Her father was Samuel Tedders and her mother was probably Elizabeth Ann Robinson, daughter of Alexander Robinson.

Any information about them all will be greatly appreciated!

There were 2 Enoch Smiths in Bibb Co. One was son of Adam & Eliz. Gomer, b.1816. The other I think might be son of John and Catherine Cost Smith b abt 1819.
On 1850 Bibb Co. Census lived John & Cath. Cost and nx door lived Enoch & Eliz. Coker Smith(my GGGparents) Again on 1870 census Baker Co. was John Smith widowed, with children & John & Cath. Cost nearby. Also Wm. Coker, Eliz Coker's father was near.

I believe John & Cath. Cost may have had the 1st child, Enoch Smith, & he doesn't show up on 1850 census. If anyone might know of a will of John or Catherine Cost, that may list the children, would appreciate knowing. I have been looking for the answer of the 2 Enoch Smiths, for a long while.

Thanks for any help. neldathompson@sbcglobal.net

Hi I am currently looking for pictures of past Smith County, Texas County Judges because Smith County hopes to put pictures of all the past judges up in the County Courthouse to honor them. I understand that the either second or third County Judge was Arthur Atkinson
Arthur possibly spelled his name Adkins or Atkins. He was a resident of Old Canton when elected County Judge. He was born about 1798 in Georgia and died about 1863. He married Dorotha Callaway Gardner 21 December 1830 in Bib County, Alabama. Arthur and Dorotha "Dolly" moved first to Autauga County then to Coosa County, Alabama, then to
Smith County, Texas around 1840-1845. If you know where I could get a picture of Mr. Atkinson it would be greatly appreciated. If you need further contact information please reply to this thread.
Thanks,
Trey

Owen Aiken Dailey family

Yesterday I received a copy of a ten page transcript that was penned by Charles Collier Dailey (b:Jan 26, 1889). In 1964 at age 75, he recorded as best he could descendents of his grandfather Owen Aiken (Boag) Dailey and wife Jane Smith. The children listed for Owen and Jane are Owen Aiken Dailey, Jr., Harrison W. Dailey, John Dailey, James Monroe Dailey, George Dailey, Helen Dailey, and Mary Eliza Dailey.

I now know that Owen Aiken (Boag) Dailey was my Great great great grandfather. My good fortune in obtaining this 44-year-old document is blowing my mind and I just couldn't wait to share my wonderful discovery with anyone researching this family. I am to assume that I am not the only person in possession of this document and would love to hear from anyone who has already entered this information in his or her computer. There are over 500 people named in this document as well as personal recollections of this elderly author. I will of course translate all this information myself into a GEDCOM as time allows.

I have not spent much time on the Dailey side of my family because I realized that not too many people were publicly researching this family and I knew I would be launching a huge research project in my very limited spare time. In other words, I've been unable to identify anyone who had already researched and posted Dailey information to make it easy on me LOL.

With this document in hand, I now have no excuse and will begin source verification of the amazing document given to me by Jerry Wayne Dailey. I was quick to notice a few mistakes in my immediate family listed in this transcript and there must be others that I will not have personal knowledge of. I do hope that others interested in the Dailey family will assist me in source verification so that all mistakes can be corrected.

I welcome emails and phone calls from anyone interested in this amazing find. Contact me at (205) 985-2040 or lorisullivan2@aol.com if you'd like to know more.
Manuel Ragland and wife Sarah Smelley

I descend from Manuel Ragland and Sarah Smelley's daughter Nancy Emmaline Ragland. I would like to find out if anyone can tell me about Sarah Smelley?

In 1860, she married M S Raglin and is listed as Sarah Smelley.

A lot of people have that her maiden name is Kitchens.

The only reference to Kitchens, I've found so far is in Charles Ragland's book volume II, which you can download here: http://www.raglandhome.com/family/genealogy.html

This reference to "Kitchens (widow Smelley)" is really throwing me for a loop.

I found a Sarah Smelley living in the household of Allen and Rachel Smelley with 18 year old Emaline in 1860, Bibb Co., AL near to where Manuel was living. On the same page is B C Ragland just a few doors down. I really feel like this is Sarah's family because of the girl named Emaline and the fact she named her first born Nancy Emaline but the reference to Kitchens bothers me.

To my knowledge, the marriage record for M S Raglin and Sarah Smelley does not reference Kitchens or widow.

These maternal lines are frustrating at times with the lack of records. I realize Charles Ragland probably had a family researcher at that time provide him the information and that may be why I can't find any documented proof of her being a Kitchens.

I also can't find any researcher with descendant information for this Allen Smelley married to Rachel (noted maiden is Corley, daughter of Zacheus Corley).

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Felicia

There is a Gilbert Thrasher on the 44th Alabama Infantry muster roll but I don't know if that is my Gilbert. The info says this Gilbert was killed in 1864 on Darbytown Rd. Any connection or info would be greatly appreciated. Gilbert would have been in Alabama before 1860. Would also appreciate any info on the Thrashers and Thrasher/Miller gang talked about in the "BLOODY BIBB" book.

I was wondering if anyone has heard of a "Duff community" in Bibb Co. It was a community of ex-slaves who lived together, and I believe even inter-married each other; so it seems most in this community are related. Any information on them or where I could obtain more information about them would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Bibb county folks,

I am looking for my 2nd great grand uncle Samuel Nash (middle name may be David), who, as the story goes was killed in Piper mines in 1894. I can not find any info about an accident in Piper mines in that year. I also do not find information that Piper mines was in exsistence at that time. The mines may have been known as the Thompson mines.
Sam's wifes name was Mary Elizabeth and the last census I find them living was 1880 in Montevallo, Shelby County Alabama. Sam's father was John William Nash. His siblings were Emma, Nancy, Dixon, Richard, Charlie, Ellen Kate, James and Mary Lucy.
If any one has the story of the Nash family above. I would love to chat!
Cyndi (Sam) Nash

BELCHER'S OF BIBB COUNTY

I have posted this information before but still have yet to get anywhere-- if anyone can please help, it would be much appreciated; the only photos I have are of the WALKER'S and the three BELCHER brothers:

My gg grandfather, Wyatt Franklin BELCHER (most often went by Frank)was born to James M. and Henrietta Josephine WALLACE (daughter of Sidney Algernon WALLACE) in 1883. "Frank" had 2 brothers (James Walter "Walter" who was a WWI vet.) and John Henry "Henry" BECLHER and two sisters (Elizabeth -married a Bibb Co. HORTON and Annie M. - married J. HOLLEY). The following surnames also went to southern Illinois after 1920.

I am able to locate the family with the exeption of extracting enough information about Frank's father, James in only 1 (1900) census which says he was born in AL. However the death certificate of Frank states TN. The entry for James (Bibb Co.) is written on the very last line and barely legible. I am unable to find this BELCHER line. The only living daughter says she does not remember him as he was born and died prior to her birth; she also says that she did not believe they were related to any of the BELCHER'S in Bibb Co.

James' wife is widowed by 1910 and I am, again, unable to locate James in any other census wherein I can prove it is him.

PLEASE HELP! I've been working on this for 3 years and have gotten nowhere.

James M. BELCHER M: Henrietta Josephine WALLACE Mar 1882

Wyatt Franklin "Frank" BELCHER M: Lucy Bell WALKER (daughter of Ella Frances ACKER and William Thomas WALKER) had 4 children: Doris 1915-1996, Frances Elaine, Frank, Jr. (died in infancy), and Lucy Josephine.

Elizabeth BELCHER M: James "Jim" HORTON
Annie M. BELCHER M: J. HOLLEY(Y)
John Henry M: after he went to IL
James Walter BELCHER: M: after his service in OH and then moved to Detroit MI.

If anyone has these lines and can/will help, please do so.

Again, thank you!

Annie

I am trying to piece together my family. I was hoping that the obituary of Larkin Payne might offer clues to parents or siblings. Larkin was born about 1876 in Georgia. He married Mayme or Mamie (I think last name Lewis) about 1902 and they lived in Vance, Tuscaloosa. I found a death record for Jan. 1928 in Bibb County. Larkin and Mayme had no children. If an obit doesn't help, maybe a death certificate????Please help, I am stumped. Thank you.

Cornelius Latham Tory in North Carolina

I have seen “Cornelius Latham , Ensign” on the list of Tory officers commissioned in Randolph County, NC as set forth in “The Narrative of Col. David Fanning” by Lindley S Butler.

My question is which Cornelius Latham was the Tory?

In my line I have :

Cornelius ( I ) Latham , b: about 1730 in Prince William County, Virginia; d: about
1793 in Randolph County, North Carolina

Cornelius ( II ) Latham , b: about 1760 in Prince William County, Virginia; d: 11 Apr
1828 in Bibb County, Alabama

Cornelius Latham ( III ) , AKA Neal Latham is also in my line but he was born after the
Revolution.

I’m fairly certain at least one and maybe two more Cornelius Lathams were in the North Carolina area during that time period, one of which signed the Regulators petition in 1768 that led to the Battle Of Alamance.

Is the Tory Ensign referenced by David Fanning, Cornelius Latham ( I ) , Cornelius Latham ( II ) or some other Cornelius Latham?

Does anyone have the answer to this? I’d appreciate any help you could give in helping me unravel my Cornelius "cornfusion"!

Thank you very much for your help!
Bob L.

Mitchell DNA results for Bibb Co. AL

Mitchell Family DNA test results have uncovered some interesting developments for some Bibb County Alabama Mitchells.

1) Hiram Mitchell (b ca. 1805-1812, Tennessee, county/city unknown d. after 1880 Sabine Parish, LA.) md. (1)Mourning in TN, abt. 1822 d. before 1854 and (2)Susan Corley in Bibb Co, AL 1854. This family lived in Bibb County in the 1850 & 1860 Censuses. (DNA Kit #92849)

This family has an exact DNA match with some Mitchells in Greene Co. TN. (see pt. 2 below) but they do not know (via paper genealogical research) how they are related to the Greene Co. TN Mitchells. But the relationship is very close. Based on the testing, Hiram is probably in the direct line of James Mitchell of Greene Co. TN; could be uncle, cousin, brother, etc. Hiram’s line is complicated by the fact that he has not been found on any federal census before 1850. It is thought that he is not the Hiram Mitchell in Sumner Co. TN, based on children’s ages, etc.

Other Mitchells from Bibb County Alabama are needed in the project. We would also love to have a male Mitchell descendent of Hiram Mitchell of Sumner Co., TN (or of Solomon Mitchell, his supposed father) join our DNA testing group to prove or disprove the above theory.

2) James Mitchell (b. 10 Jan. 1822 TN – d. 1 April 1887 Greene Co. TN) who md. Martha Louisa Stokes 29 Dec. 1848 Greene Co. James Mitchell may be the son of a Thomas Mitchell (b. ca. 1783 VA according to the 1850 Greene Co. TN census.). We have 2 participants, DNA Kits # 25054 and #2605, who were already known to be related to one another - through this James Mitchell. These are exact DNA matches to Hiram Mitchell (above, pt. 1). James Mitchell’s descendents did not move to Bibb County, AL, as far as we know.

Any known male Mitchell descendents of this Thomas Mitchell (b. ca. 1783 VA, lived in Greene CO. TN) are needed to join our group and submit their DNA for testing.

3) Robert Mitchell (b. Abt. 1784 PA? d. 12 Sept. 1860 Tazewell Cty, VA) md. Sarah (Sally) Katherine Mickle 6 Sept. 1821 in Surry Co. NC. Family also lived in Smyth Co. VA and Lawrence Co. KY before moving to South Dakota. (DNA Kit #52758)

This DNA match shows itself to be more distant than the other matches. Robert Mitchell is related to both Hiram and James Mitchell above- and there is a 75 % chance it was within the past 24 generations. This means their connection was probably not in Greene Co. or Bibb County.

More male Mitchells descended from Tazewell Co., Smyth Co. VA, and Surry Co. NC should be tested for a closer match for Robert Mitchell’s descendents.

You can view all the results at: http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Mitchell/

Contact information for the coordinators of the project is on the above webpage.

I am temporarily in possession of an old photo of ELI BOYD and his wife (ca 1900-1910). Does anyone know the name of his wife? I can't read what is written on the back of the photo. I also have a photo of TOM SMITH (Eli Terry Smith, Jr.). I have a tintype of MARTHA SMITH who married JAMES HENRY HORTON. There is another tintype of a lady that I cannot identify. It could possibly be MARTHA SMITH at a later date or NANCY REDD REACH SMITH or EDITH/EDY MEDDERS. Does anyone have a photo I can use for comparison. If anyone is interested in receiving a jpg file of any of the photos, please let me know.
Jacque

Some have his mother as Terry Elender, but that is incorrect. I have a photo copy of Elender TERRY Cleveland's father, David Terry's , will. Both Jackson and Mary Ann Cleveland, Jackson's sister, are mentioned in the will. Jackson's father, Carter Walton Cleveland, was the administrator of the will. My ggg-grandmother was Elender Terry's sister.
Margie

Even though he is a direct relative I am having trouble linking my family to him because anyone that could remember anything about the Graves side of the family has passed. If anyone has any detailed information on Gov. David Bibb Graves, I would greatly appreciate it if you could contact me directly so we could compare notes and hopefully fill in some holes in my tree . . furryfriends4u@comcast.net.
I am helping my friend Scott B. with his research & hoping someone can answer this BIBB County Census Question. ===========================================================

In 1860 Shaderick Vining age 44 & family were listed on the Bibb Co., AL Census @ "W. Side Cahaba River"

In 1870 I cannot find this family listed in Bibb Co.,AL

But in 1880 I find Shaderick Vining Jr.(child of the above from 1860 census) listed as living at Kingdom, Bibb Co,AL
----------------------------------------------------------
My question is this... since this family was listed in 1860 as being on the "W.Side Cahaba River" , which isn't really a township. What township & county would this area of become by 1870 ??

Jackson Brewer

Posting with hopes a potential contact will read this...
I regret that I can no longer find the e-mail address of the person who contacted me concerning Jackson Brewer.
Jackson is the son of James S. Brewer and Celia C. Brewer who married in Bibb County.
Regarding their locations, please see 1850 Bibb census(James and Celia with son, Eliazer...this name is correct and found earlier in the family line through Eliazer Cornelius "Neal" Brewer).
See also 1860 Winston county for a complete list of this couple's children. James perished in the civil war and his service is documented with archives.
Celia as "Celey" with family are in Baker County in 1870. By 1880 she is returned to Bibb where I do not find son, Jackson, but see she shares her home with son, Nathan Levi. The family remains in Bibb thereafter.
There were 2 Jackson Brewers in later census...it seems that Nathan named a son John Jackson and it is he that married a Sarah. The older Jackson was married to Francis Kirkley. The 1900 and 1910 census demonstrate the families of the brothers, Andrew Jackson and Nathan Levi. In 1910 the older Jackson makes his home with son, James (something like Jaesson in index).
I hope this is helpful.
Regards,
Robin Garland

I am looking for information about Anthony Stoutenborough,a resident from about 1831-1850. He was apparently a landowner and slaveholder.
He was involved in a number of court cases. I am wondering if the "Tonteen" was a building, land holding or business.
An account of Bibb County states that he built a large mansion which is no longer standing.

Am researching Shuttleworths of Bibb--especially Abner Shuttleworth [who is my brick wall]. I have his marriage to Matilda Ann Hubbard [supposedly his cousin] on 17 Jun 1850 in Tuscaloosa, AL. I have found 3-4 Abners but can't seem to document which one is mine. One of his sons was John Martin Shuttleworth whose son was William Clifton Shuttleworth, my grandfather. All help gratefully received. Willing to share anything I have.
Hello,
I am looking for any information concerning a John T. or possibly John F. Kendrick, born in 1852. He married Susan Edins (Eddins, Eddings), born in 1854 (at one time after 1874 Susan lived in Etowah County).

He lived in Shelby County, Alabama sometime around 1870-1874. He and Susan had two children, firstborn Sarah (not sure of the date) and second born James Eli, born 1874.

John went missing while Susan was pregnant with Eli. We have no information regarding his parents and/or siblings.

If you have any information, it would be much appreciated!
I'm trying to find the location of a former community named Hattop, which seems to be in Bibb County or possibly Shelby County. I've got photos of my grandparents and of my grandfather and his brothers as children that were taken around the period 1913 to 1923 and are stamped as having been developed and printed by Jessie Campbell of "Hattop, Ala"

I am unable to locate the town in the USGS' GNIS database and on a current Alabama atlas. Cannot find it with a Google search either.

I would like to find an obit for my grandfather John Henry FERGUSON died 9 April 1969 in Centreville. His parents were Robert Lafayette FERGUSON and Margaret Ann CALDWELL.

My mom has since passed away and I am unable to find an obit if she saved one. At the time of his death he was married to Ora ROGERS FERGUSON. Am hoping the obit will tell me where he is buried. I was in school when he died and unable to attend the funeral and then spent 20 odd years as a Navy Wife living around the world and cannot find anyone who knows where he is buried. My dad at 87 yrs doesn't remember.

Any and all help is appreciated. Please respond to the message board or you may email me directly at trishfnunn@yahoo.com

Thanks in advance, Trish

I found the will for Sherod Cutts dated 1829 in Bibb County. He was fairly well off judging by his will. I can't locate any land deeds with his name on them. His sons, William and James purchased land about a year after his death. Why would a man with enough money to own slaves, and leave several nice items to this family in a will not own the land he lived on? Were they squatters? Any ideas on where to look for land records beside the Bureau of Land Management? He is not listed there.
