4/28/99 I've reviewed years of Singleton data and can only offer the following info that hopefully you can then find connections to: (1) Old English spelling in early America days was Shingleton vs. today's Singleton. Same name, same family. (2) Bullock Co, Georgia land deeds records in 1805 a David and Mary Singleton. (3) Putnum Co., GA also in 1805 records marriage of same David Singleton to Mary ?. They had a grandson David T. Singleton, b. NOv. 11, 1831, d. May 18, 1913. (4) A Crawford Singleton m. Selah Grimsley Dec. 27, 1793, in Wilkes Co, GA. Probably a kinship here.
(5) Here is a revised part guessing, part fact, Singleton line: Robert Singleton (Va.), b. 1650, d. 1725, m. Elizabeth Thornton (2nd wife; don't know lst wife's name).
Robert & Elizabeth Singleton had (in Va.) Robert Singleton, b. 1688, d. 1744; Joshuah Singleton, b. 1692, d. 5 Feb. 1732; Susanna Singleton, b. 1674, d. 15 Apr 1724; Mary Singleton, b. 1696, d. 1789; Isaac Singleton; & Averilla Singleton. (6) Joshua Singleton had: Robert Singleton b. 1724, d. 1760; Sarah Singleton b. 3 Aug 1725, d. 1775; Joshua Singleton, b. 23 Jan 1727, d. 20 Feb. 1773; Ann Singleton, b., d. 1730(baby death); Stanley Singleton, b. 29 Oct. 1731, d. 1794; Hezekiah Singleton (I) of Va. & N.C., m. Margaret Ash (widwo)in 1745 in Chowan Co. NC [on NC/Va. border), his 2nd wife, don't know lst wife name. Hezekiah (I) & Margaret Singleton had: in Putnam & Monroe Co, GA records Abner Singleton; in Pike Co, GA records, Rev. Wyatt Singleton, lst wife Arleta Congleton, b. 1820, d. Nov. 7, 1837 & 2nd wife Nancy Ann Chrisman(widow), children of both wives were Rev. Wyatt C. Singleton; William Wesley Singleton; Jeremiah Singleton m. Mary Ann Terrell Jan. 4, 1825, Greene Co, GA [Jeremiah & Mary Ann Singleton had son, Rev. Joseph Jeremiah Singleton, who was Methodist circuit rider preacher in Monroe Co. Ga. bet. 1869 & 1872]; Nancy Singleton, m. a Mr. Patrick; Martha Singleton, m. a Mr. Wallen; Eliza Singleton, m. a Mr. Gunnels; Polly Singleton, m. a Mr. Israel; & Sara Singleton.
Hezekiah Singleton (II) died 1825, m. Martha ?, in Putnam Co, GA. Their descendants were: Henry Singleton, b. ?, d. Aug 8, 1869. Henry's lst wife was Unity Forman, m. 1820, she died in 1825. Henry's 2nd wife was Nancy Cotton (widow). Children by both wives were: Martha A. Singleton; Alexander E. Singleton (I), m. Mary Caroline Pierce of Ga.; William R. Singleton; Wyatt Cotton Singleton (executor of Henry's Will); Samuel H. Singleton; Elizabeth Singleton, m. a Mr. Jones. A. E. Singleton, II, was part of my line already spelled out in my lst note to your geneology on Bullcok Co, GA.
Daughter of Hezekiah Singleton (I) & wife Margaret Ash, was
Hetta Singleton (Putnam Co,GA records) who married John H. Walker Sept. 11, 1816. They had one son, a Joh Walker, wife Ann, who had no children, & they settled in today's Bullock Co, Ala, leaving their 3,000 acre farm to my late Uncle, Alexander Edward Singleton (III).
Last son of Hezekiah (I) & Margaret Singleton was Burrell Singleton, in Putnum Co, GA & SC records. Burrell particpated in the early 1800's Georgia Gold Mine Land Rushes.
Numerous other Singletons of our total line were from Va. to both NC &SC, as I noted in my original e-mail on all this.
I hope you can make some connections now for your Joseph Mordica Singleton, son of ? Singleton and Mary ?. et al.
One suggestion. No one's data is ever 100% accurate or correct. Names are frequently misspelled or left out entirely in some listings. Dates are fallible, etc. So don't be put down if every single name, etc. doesn't check out. If a majority of names, locations by co., etc. check out, you are in the right "ball park".
Good Luck, this is all I have to offer that is of our joint line in these areas. Other Singletons from early Va. went to Kentucky, Mississippi, but that is another story for another time.
