(their son) all buried in Gillis family plot, Oak Hill Ce, Troy, AL., where Mildred Gillis Singleton's parents, Claude Johnson & Lida Lightfoot Gillis are buried, along w/baby Gillis,b.,d., 1898. James Irving Gillis,b. 1901, d. 1942 of lung cancer, m. (?), and is bured in St. Landry Parrish, LA. George Lightfoot Singleton, b. 9/4/39, m. Alice Newell Brooks of Penna., in Troy, AL 4/28/79. Children are Sara Brooks Singleton, b. 10/16/80, & twins, Susanna Gillis & Rebecca Powell Singleton, b. 7/25/83, all 3 girls born Bham, AL. George Lightfoot Singleton named after his maternal grandfather, Bolivar Co., Mississippi Probate Judge George Thomas Lightfoot, b. circa 1830, d. (murdered during reconstruction) 1874, Bolivar Co., Miss. G.T. Lightfoot's wife was Julia Ann Bonsall Lightfoot. Two children by George T. & Julian Bonsall Lightfoot, dau. Ann, b. & d. 1862, near Jackson, Miss.; Lida Effie Lightfoot (Gillis), grandmother of George Lightfoot Singleton, b. 1869, d. 1947.
**Dad's older brother was Alexander Edward Singleton, referred to as II on his tombstone in Union Springs. He in fact was #III, and his son, Alexander Edward Singleton, referred to as #III on his tombstone, was in fact AES #4. AES #4 had no children by his wife, Barbara Bell Singleton, also buried in Union Springs, in the Singleton/Beverly plots. Dad's other siblings were Mary Powell Singleton, 1891-1976, former Trustee of Hollins College, VA; Lucile Powell Singleton, 1893-1992, lst women broadcasting executive in USA (CBS network chief auditionist, 1929-1961);
Francis Powell Singleton, teacher, Jasper, AL, b. 1894, d. 1934; Carolyn Powell Singleton (Gavin), b. 1894 d. 1978 in VA, buried with her late in life husband, Rear Admiral Arthur Gavin in Arlington National Cemetary, VA. Carolyn was an RN administrator of a private hospital in Philadelphia, PA fm 1920 to her married in 1954 to widower Gavin. Powell Singleton, b. 1897, d. 1910 (kicked in head by goat driving a "goat cart"); Dad, B. P. Singleton, b. 1903, d. 1981; and Charles Brown Singleton, b. 1905, d. 1960 in Wilton, Conn. Charles was a Dartmouth College grad, became an insurance broker in NYC, having Radio City property account in his "portfolio". Only A. E. Sinleton (III) who married a Miss Patterson of Chatham, VA, son, only child, A. E. Singleton (IV); B.P. Singleton (details of two sons above); and C. B. Singleton had children...CBSingleton had son, James Spartan Singleton, b. 1938, Wilton, Conn., d. 1970, suburban Toronto, Canada; and a daughter, Melinda Singleton, b. Oct. 1, 1940, still living in Kemsing, Kent, Ebgland, newly a widow (1999), w/her sons David Singleton, 29 and Charles Singleton, 26, as of 1999.

Jimmie Lucas Powell, dau. of James Lucas Powell and Virginia Thompson of old Macon, now Bullock Co, Ala. AES (II) was son of Alexander Edward Singleton(I) (B. 1825, Monroe Co, Ga., m. 1847 in Monroe Co, Ga., d. 1906, Upson Co, Ga) & Mary Caroline Pierce, of the family of Methodist Bishop George Foster Pierce, 2nd president of Emory University. A. E. Singleton (I) was elected Upson Co. Tax Assessor in 1872 and thereafter for several terms.
Alexander Edward Singleton (I), had 3 brothers, William Chappelle Singleton, b. 1832, d. 1915,age 83 in Macon, Ga.
W.C. Singleton was formerly a school teacher and statewide scholar in Latin and mathematics. As a young man he started a mercantile business in Macon, Singleton & Hunt, which became one of the largest wholesalers in Georgia, with branches in AL, one of which was owned & run by his nephew in Bullock Co, Judge Al El Singleton (II). W.C. Singleton later became general agent for all of Georgia for St. Paul Fire & Marine Insurance Co, until his death in 1915. During the Civil War he was in the Confederate Army hospital corp in Virginia. Other brothers were William R. and Samuel H. Singleton all of whom predeceased William Chappelle Singleton. Another brother, James Henry Singleton was b. 1859, d (?).
A. E. Singleton (I) sisters were Mattie Sara Singleton, b. 1856, d (?); Bettie Mattie Singleton, m. a Howell.
PARENTS of A. E. Singleton (I) were Henry Singleton (b. 1798, Virginia; m. 1820, Putnam Co, GA, d. 13 Apr 1869, Putnam Co, Ga.) and two wives, #1 Unity Foreman, d. 1825 and #2, Nancy Cotten, b. 1799, d. (?), who survived Henry. Apparently (?) some intermarriage occurred, in that Unity Forman was kin to Martha Foreman, wife of Hezekiah Singleton, Henry Singleton's father.
W. C. Singleton's obituary in the MACON TELEGRAPH April 16, 1915 issue, states he was born on the Singleton farm of Henry & Nancy Singleton in 1832. Henry is noted as having moved to Georgia directly from Virginia.
Hezekia Singleton (b. 5 Dec 1775, d. 1822 in Ga, on Singleton farm in Monroe Co) m (?) Martha Foreman. Hezekiah's father is believed to be another Hezekiah Singleton of Virginia(b. circa 1720, m. 1745 in Chowan Co, NC, d. (?), and his wife, Margaret Ash, a widow whom he married. *Chowan Co., NC is just across the state line from southern Virginia.

There is a Robert Singleton of VA, b. 1650, d. 1725, who "I think" is the father of Joshua Singleton.
There is a Sir Robert Singleton who arrived in the Virginia Colony in 1609 (lst Jamestown) and who died in the Richmond, VA area, who I "think", not proved, is the father of Robert Singleton.
