Hi Chrisandra, About four years ago, I met a large
African-American family when I was in Lafayette (in
Chambers Co. AL). They were polite and well-educated.
I don't recall where they were from, but I do remember
they were there because they are relatives of boxer
Joe Lewis. I wish I could tell you their names and
contact information. I can figure out the exact date.
Perhaps they signed a guest register at a museum. I
remember they told me a true story about one of their
ancestors who was sold as a slave on the town square
there in Lafayette (a LONG time ago). Here is a video-clip about the statue of Joe Lewis in Lafayette
where he is regarded as a native son.

http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=%22Joe+Lewis%22+and+Lafa...

Re: State of Alabama, city of Lanett city - Chambers County early 1900's

I found some information in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 census. Your family lived in Lanette during all three census.

According to theses census, Rena's husband was Joe James. He was born around 1857 in Alabama. In the 1910 census, they listed the years they had been married as 17. (1893). But in the 1900 census, it states they had been married 10 years, (1890). Rena's age is also way off in the 1900 census, they had her being born in Dec 1857. I think this was the census' taker's fault in Chambers County, because they did the same to my gg grandmother who lived in the same county.

I found the following children in some or all the 1900, 1910, and 1920 census:

(1.) Joseph Jr. - born 1897
(2.) Shirley (?), spelled Shiay born 1899 - she isn't listed in the 1920 census. born - 1899.
(3.) William - born 1903
(4.) Henry - born 1904
(5.) James (Jim?) James -born 1909
(6.) Mary - born 1913
(7.) Susan Jane - born 1902. Strange because she wasn't listed in the 1910 census, only the 1920 census. She was listed as the daughter of Joe and Rena James.
(8.) Sugar R. James - born May 1899. She is only listed in the 1900 census, but I believe Sugar and Shirley were the same person. She isn't listed in the 1920 census.

I couldn't find a marriage listing for Joe and Rena to give you Rena's maiden name. I did find a death record for a Rena(Jonas) James. This Rena died Jan 1929 in Talladega County.

Anyway, I hope this helps you in your search. Good luck.

Cindy

I did find an 1852 Jackson County, GA marriage index record for a Francis M Lyle and Naoma Carol (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/FWHN-QM3 ) and a Washington, D.C. death index record for a John H Lyle, son of Francis Lyle and Naoma Carol, (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/F7YP-SHY ), but this John Lyle would have been living at the time of Minerva Hamiter's death and he is not mentioned in the probate notice. Additionally, I found an 1860 Hall County GA census which shows a F M Liles b ca 1831 in a household headed by H Liles; Hall and Jackson counties share a border. So I do not think the F M Liles who married Naoma Carol is the father of Cassie.
Hello, Jennifer,

We communicated on ancestry.com about Gordon Davis and Cassie Lisle/Liles. I came across a 1914 Probate Notice related to the estate of Minvera Hamiter (http://files.usgwarchives.net/al/randolph/newspapers/newspap... ) that mentions Cassie Davis. The probate notice led me to a cemetery survey (http://files.usgwarchives.net/al/randolph/cemeteries/concord... ) which includes a record for Minerva M Hamiter and states that her parents were James and Rhoda Liles. I attempted to trace each of the persons mentioned in the notice and found Texas death certificates for Wallace W [Wm Wallace - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JXZC-2VZ ] and H.T.[Harrison Taylor - https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JDV8-5YM ] Liles showing their parents were James Liles and Rhoda Guthrie. An 1850 Gilmer County, GA census (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/MZYG-RHB ) shows the family of James and Rhoda Lyle and includes a F M C Lyle (Francis Marion?) b ca 1831, a Mary M Lyle (Minerva?) b ca 1836, and a William W Lyle b ca 1848. My theory is that F M C Lyle was the father of Cassie Lisle Davis and Minerva Hamiter was her aunt. This would mean Cassie's grandparents were James and Rhoda Guthrie Liles. The cemetery survey includes burial records for James and Rhoda and shows their parents as John and Chany Gibson Liles and John Guthrie. I don’t know how to prove any of this, but thought I would share it in case you come up with something that supports or disproves it.
I just today read elsewhere online that there is a probate file for the estate of Samuel P Dennis and that it lists Andrew J Dennis as his next of kin and the minor children of Irwin Dennis as heirs, like Irwin was his son and was dead. Which is consistent with what I have found.

Looking for info on my gg grandmother Cassie Liles born Feb. 1856 in Alabama. Father was Marion Liles, don't know about her mother. She married James L. Davis in Lee Co. Alabama in 1874. Not sure when they went to Lafayette, Chamber Co., but I believe their children were all born there. Their kids were Minnie, James, Pattie, Gordon, and Cassie. Thanks.

Looking for any members with any knowledge of the city of Lanette, Alabama - Chambers County from 1870 - 1940's

So far I have discovered that the county was organized December 18th 1832 annexed from it's parent county "Creek Cession". In 1903 Chambers co. population was 6,235 and it's representative in the state legislature was a Democrat by the name of William Crawford Thomas.

My paternal 2nd Great Grandmother "Rena James" (widowed negro female born 1870) 1940 Census Registration is showing she lived in the city of Lanette but that is as much relative information that I can find for her. I would like to find a spouse if possible for her. Her daughter my paternal Great Grandmother "Irene Jones" (negro female born 1906)is also showing up as a widow and theres no record of marriage for either one of them. I would really appreciate any insight... Thanks

My g-g-grandfather, Thomas Christian(1795-1846) and his wife, Nancy Scurry are supposedly buried in the cemetery of Antioch Baptist Church. Eleven of their children were baptized by Rev Francis Calloway and 2 of their sons served as clerks in the church for many years. Thomas and Nancy helped build the church. I will be in that area soon and am looking for specific directions to the church/cemetery and any other relevant info. I hope to visit the cemetery. Please respond if you have any information.
Yes, Ma'am, I have a little I have collected about the Temple family, but I have not tried to looked back past Thomas.

The Hoggs are distantly related to my Lawrence family. I just love Pate Cemetery where they're all buried. Your Aunt Ruthie is buried there also. :)

I have Thomas Tobias Temple was born 1884 in Union Co., AR & died 9 Oct 1952 in De Soto Parish, LA & buried at Benson Cemetery in De Soto Parish. He m. 1930 in Union Co., AR to Bettie Eastridge (no dates). She is not buried with him, at least marked. She probably remarried.

With Juila he had:

2. Ida Ruth "Ruthie" Temple, b. 7 Mar 1909 in Union Co., AR & died 7 Jul 1912 in Union Co., AR. She is buried in Pate Cemetery, Union Co., AR.

3.
Thomas Tibos Temple was my Grandfather , when My mom was 6 years old they all moved to Mansfield La. my Uncles were Marvin , Hubert Temple, George Temple and Mom was Irine Temple, George was 19 and stayed in Ar. Mom ran away when she was 14 years old and assumed a alias of several names on my birth cert. is Carmen Francis. sad but true as life was hard then and I presume that was the way she was able to deal with it. I didn't know anything of her family until I was 24.
Are you family of George Temple? would love to find him and his family to put in my Genealogy.
I am 69 and trying to get this done so I can leave it for my 3 Sons. I have my Dad's side back to the 1500's and hope to get this side before I leave this world. not that it matters but it is also closure .
hope to hear soon :) Deana Meadows Lewis

I am looking for a photo of Moses Wheat Allen, who lived in a large house in Lafayette, and had 8 or 9 daughters.
One of his daughters was my wife's Grandmother-Mary Allen (Latimore), and the family seems to have no pictures of him.
I am attaching a photo of the house. Is there anyone in Lafayette that can tell me if this house still exists, and what might be the address?
Thanks,
Mike

George Mitcham Sanders m Celeste Ann "Annie" Greene. They had three daughters: Willie Truma Sanders VanLoan, Blannie Lee Sanders Sanders, and Ida Keron Sanders. After Annie died in UNK George went to South Alabama somewhere around Selma. He was killed in a store robbery in 1938. He is buried in the County Line Cemetery but with the initials (on findagrave) as C M Sanders, not G M Sanders. If someone is a cemetery visitor and goes there I would appreciate their looking at the grave and seeing if it it really listed as C M or rather G M. The daughters were raised by George's father and mother, Jesse B Sanders and Mary Eliza Mitcham Sanders. Blannie and Keron died in Birmingham and Willie Truma died in Athens Greene County NY. She is buried in the MT Hope cemetery in Athens. Thank you Eleanor Greene Hemmes HemmesEG@aol.com

Minnie Pearl Finley and James Finley

Hello my name is Chrisandra. My mother is Patricia Dupre (Finley) originally from Lafayette, Alabama. My Grandparents now deceased, were James Finley and Minnie Finley. I am trying to research my family history. I've been hearing that my grandmother Minnie was related to the boxer Joe Lewis, her maiden name was Scott. The only other names I'm familiar with are my Great great Aunt Carrie Bell who moved to Boston, MA and a great great Aunt who went by the nickname Sis. I'm guessing the finley relatives that I'm related to were slaves that lived on a plantation as I'm african american, but I can tell by looking at old photos that I might also be related to other finley members that were not slaves.. Please if anyone can help, I would much appreciate it.

Chambers County, AL had more negro slaves than whites by the 1860 Census. In 1850, here's the numbers for your ancestor.

#H261

James H. Foreman 39M Farmer Real Estate Value $2,900 (23-slaves, 2-runaways) Born NY,
Eliza A.M. Foreman 38F Born GA,
Julia E. Foreman 15F Born GA,
Robert H. Foreman 13M Born AL,
Emely Foreman 11F Born AL,
Louisa Foreman 9F Born AL,
Mary Foreman 6F Born AL,
John Bostwick 80M Born GA,
Robert Martin 40M Blacksmith Born GA

Louisa in the above record may be your Laura Celestia. Or, it could be Laura on the original census. My information comes from a transcription of the census by John Peavy Wright.
Hope this helps.
