Canant Family

Surnames: Canant, McCullough
I am looking for the parents of Permilia Elizabeth Canant, b 21 April 1851 died 20 Sep. 1912 in Cherokee County, Al. She married James Worth McCullough in Cherokee County and they had a home at Ringgold. The one document I have shows father to be James H. Canant with no mother listed. A recently found hand written note from her daughter, Minnie, shows Stephen Hardy Canant and Manerva Clayton. Can anyone provide information on this or any other Canant information? Thanks

Hi Ron,
I have a relative Donah Rodgers b.1863 Ga who married Jasper C. Jarvis (b.1860 AL )in 1879 In Paulding Co.GA. In the 1880 Paulding Co.census she and Jasper aref found on page 400C with Lucrecy CANANT , MotherL, in the HH.
There are many Canants in Paulding Co. and I have always been puzzled by this Lucrecy CANANT since Donah,s maiden name was Rodgers. Can you help solve this Problem?
Thanks so much,
Joann in AL

Thanks for the reply Dennis,
It turns out that James HARDY Canant is the correct name so James Henry is probably not the same person. I have Manerva dying 28 Mar. 1852 in Cherokee County, AL. and James marrying Amanda Cunningham about 1853. James died 10 Oct. 1899 in Lincoln County, TN. Amanda died abt 1873 so a third marriage could have been possible.

Could you possibly mean Canute? I am trying to get a better lead on Thomas and Sarah Canute who lived in Franklin Co. Ark. in the 1850s. Ruby

The 1860 Talladega County Census has a William L. Canant with wife Elizabeth and some kids.

1870 Cherokee County AL census has no William Canant, but some other Canant families/individuals as shown below). There is an elderly W.L. with daughter Amanda (based on large age difference) in Clay County.

The Canants in Cherokee Co AL in 1870 are:

Canant, James (appears as James H. in 1850 and 1860 in Cherokee Co)
Birthplace: South Carolina
Age: 47
Race: White
Post Office:Gaylesville

Canant, James O
Birthplace: Alabama
Age: 9
Race: White
Post Office:Gaylesville

Canant, Leonadas
Birthplace: Alabama
Age: 16
Race: White
Post Office:Gaylesville

Canant, Mary P
Birthplace: Alabama
Age: 14
Race: White
Post Office:Gaylesville

I found a William Canant in Clay County AL in the 1880 census, however his wife appears to have died by that time. I found another one in Cullman County in same census.

The Walker Co one (the only Wm Canant in the state) is found in Jefferson Co in 1910 with same wife and daughters Claudie, Sudie, Ethel, and 3-y old Lena E.

1920 AL Census has two William Canants...

1930 census only has the Jefferson/Walker County guy (William H.) with wife Mary M, daughter Annie L, her hubby and two kids, and two lodgers.

Since you're from TX, I should mention that I noticed the 1930 Henderson Co, TX census has a William E. Canant (52) with wife Tura (54) and no kids.
