Hi Kendra,

Not sure if you are still looking for information on Ralph Thomas Lane. Ralph Sr. is my husbands Great grandfather. I just recently received a copy of his death certificate. Still researching his parents, but it shows that N M Lane was his father. I have been able to find a Noah M Lane, but have not done enough research to confirm.

Lindsay

Trying to firm up an old family story relating to what seems to be an easy connection to the Justic/Elliott families. We've been told our family (Phillips) was involved in some kind of revenge/"honor" killing over in southeast Alabama (Coffee/Geneva/Santa Rosa County and I believe there is a connection. Our grandfather William Edward Phillips (1829-1900) was neighbors with the Justice family and his daughter Mary Francis Phillips married into the Elliott family and his other daughter Rebecca Phillips married into the Cooley family whose daughter Saphronia Phillips later Married a Noah Justice . Interesting to note that Mary Frances Phillips was living with her father William Edward Phillips with a child and no father, which could lead to believe there was some issue there. The story we've always been told was the family got into some trouble from killing some black men and ran out of town afterward. William Edward Phillips and his family moved to Santa Rosa County, FL after this time frame and he dropped his first name and just went by Edward, would be interested to see some of you're thoughts on the possible connection? Thanks!

Leah,
I have been working on the same line but can't seem to find the information that you have. Can you please share the documentation that you have on Sarah Anderson. I also cannot locate "Henry Co". If I can find some more of this information, I might be able to get a little further into the family line.

"William (Billy) Gibson served in the CSA, enlisted in the Fall of 1862 in Co. H. 15th Conf. Calvary under Capt. Brown. He was in the hospital at the close of the war when he was discharged. They moved to Molino, Escambia Co., FL in Feb. 1879.

Family lore, as well as personal characteristics, indicate Billy and/or Sally were at least part indian. I recently found where the Lower Creeks were located in Henry Co., where Sally indicated on the penion application she was born. The were married in Dale Co. This is not far from Geneva Co. So I thought I'd drop you a line to see if any of the names sound familiar."
Thanks
Joseph E. Gibson

Erin,
I am the daughter of the John Greene Austin, Jr. you corresponded with. I'm sorry to tell you that my father died in 1998 and I am only just now taking up the challenge to do more research.

I have a story of Cordelia told to me by my father, that her mother Mary was an Indian (tribe unknown) who worked as a housekeeper for Dr. Elliott, then in partnership with Dr. Justice. When Dr. Elliott moved on, he "gave" her, my father's words, to Dr. Justice and that's how the Justice connection came about. This Indian ancestry has not be verified and I would be grateful for any more information. Cordelia herself, apparently never talked about it and my late father knew her well.

I would be interested to know more about the "other" Cordelia Elliott Justice mentioned in this thread and happy to share what little I know.

As I understand, there are only two descendents of Cordelia Eliott Justice Austin; myself and one female cousin. Alas, neither of us have children.

Jackson Rutherford Austin (1865-1891) m Cordelia Eliott Justice (c1866-1958)
1. John Greene Austin, Sr. (1885-1966) m Modell (Semolia Odell) Maund (1900-1991)
1.1 John Greene Austin, Jr. (1928-1998)
1.2 One child, living
2. Bama (1886-1960). She married several times but had no children.
3. Richard Walton (1889-1971) m Mary Jewell Campbell (1893-1973)
3.1 One child, living
4. Southie was accidently shot and killed in 1919. She was living in Chancelor, Alabama when this happened. The Donnell or Donald family is from Bellwood Alabama.

Murders/Killings in Geneva County early 1870s

I'm looking for information on any rumors or word of mouth stories to confirm a family story of our own. Our family has been told across multiple generations that there was a killing (more specifically some sort of revenge killing) that caused the family to flee, leave everything behind and get to "Indian country" to "evade the law". They left Geneva County, AL and moved to Berrydale, FL in Santa Rosa County, FL where William Edward Phillips (1829-1900) and his family migrated to where he dropped his first name and continued to go by Edward. From what we've been told it was some sort of revenge or family type killing, somebody killed a Phillips and thus they were killed back, along those lines. We've also heard something possibly involving killing an African American and it causing big problems. Just following census records I believe they probably left Geneva County, AL for Santa Rosa County, FL between 1870 and 1875 since some of the families children are seen being born in 1875 in Florida. Two interesting notes are Mary Frances Phillips (William Edward Phillips' daughter) has a child around this time that has no father present and retains his mother's maiden name (Monroe Phillips). Another big question is one of William Edward Phillips' sons Owen E Phillips (born 1860) completely disappears by the time everyone else in the family is in Florida.

*I'm aware of the Justice family murders which is interesting because my Phillips family lived by the same Justices in Geneva County, AL and furthermore William Phillips is buried on what was known as "Noah Justice's 40 acres" in Berrydale, FL.

I would greatly appreciate any folk tales or family stories that might can connect some of the old family tales, thanks!

I remembered I had a copy of Julius C. and Callie Connor Butts's Family Bible. It shows that J.A. Wiggins and Marie Frances Butts married on August 2, 1919.

If there is something else that I can help with let me know. I still have my mother, who is 83, that can give me some information.

I know that Marie, Aunt Eva Butts, my dad William Earl, Callie's grandson, were at the bed of Callie when she died of a stroke at the old log homestead that is no longer there, but I own the property. I have a few pictures of her and only one of Alice Maude, my grandmother.

There is also a notation in the Bible of an infant son being born to J.A. and Marie Wiggins on Oct. 29, 1921 and also died on Oct. 29, 1921.
I remember Delaney. He had come to live with my parents and I for a while after getting into some trouble. Uncle Rev. Tommy Lane Butts tried to help him. All I know about him was that he was a nice looking man, this was when he was probably in his late 30's or early 40's, medium height and had dark brown hair. Uncle Tommy tried to help him out when, I was told, robbed a bank and while out of prison again went to live at a boarding house in Foley, Ala. but he robbed the theater there and went back into prison. He was a very likeliable person, but I was only a small child at the time. I always saw the good of someone at that age. Do you have any information on Delaney? Uncle Rev. Tommy and I have discussed him at one of the last home comings at the church in Bermuda, AL. and had wondered whatever happened to him. I don't think I every met any of the other siblings, if I did I can't remember. My dad was William Earl Butts.

I have his (James M. Smith) dates as 1790-1850 , no other information on him. He is my 3rd great grandfather. My Smith grandfather died in 1949, 7 years before I was born so we lost all connection with the Smith family. Would love to have any information on them.

Hi Terry,
Did you ever get a response from the 1870 household of Eliza Carpenter widow of Sampson H Carpenter? I am looking for more information on a son listed as Jessy H. Carpenter ab 1867. Trying to find his father or if Eliza may have adopted one of her in-law's son? This is my wife's line and stopped on this.
Thanks,
Ron McRaney
ron_mcraney hotmail com

Jacob Kelley (1780 - 1862) and wife Chloe (1790 - ????)

Greetings from Atlanta. I'm currently searching for the burial site of Jacob Kelly (1790 - 1862) and his wife Chloe (maiden name unknown) (1790 - ????). A 1 Dec 18 1860 land patent shows a land purchase in northern Geneva County. Thanks, in advance, for any assistance.
