YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio – Services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 17, 2012, at the Greater Friendship Baptist Church for Mr. Solomon Evans Jr., 79, who departed this life Wednesday, Aug. 8, 2012.
Mr. Evans, affectionately known as “Jit” and “Little Jit,” was born Sept. 16, 1932, in Greensboro, Alabama (Hale County) a son of Solomon Sr. and Virginia O. Burrell Evans, coming to this area as a child.
He was a 1950 graduate of East High School.
He had worked at Youngstown Sheet and Tube (LTV) for a short time. After leaving Sheet & Tube, he worked for General Motors Lordstown for 40 years, retiring in 2006. During those same years with GM, he also worked in construction, where he was a self-employed cement finisher. Solomon also helped his brother, Thomas Sr. to open the former Jitso’s Place. Jit enjoyed social games, and being with family and friends.
He was a U.S. Army Korean War veteran.
He leaves to forever cherish his memory, his daughter, Fallon Evans of Hyattsville, Md.; his sister, Alfreda (David) Martin of Youngstown, Ohio; a devoted nephew, Thomas Evans Jr., who was like a son to him; and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Sarah Pettaway; a brother, Thomas Evans Sr.; and a nephew, Michael Evans.
Friends may call Thursday from noon to 6 p.m. at the L.E. Black, Phillips & Holden Funeral Home, and on Friday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the church
