Spann Families of Bamberg County SC & Dothan AL

This posting is in answer to a question from Pat Sabin and Sharman Ramsey.

Phillip Norman Spann, Henry Fletcher Spann and Marcellus Steadman Spann were all brothers and sons of Phillip Churchill Spann (1836-1911) and Jane Adella Steedman (1838-1904). Their paternal grandparents were Rev. Henry Hammond Spann (1808-1870) and Caroline Christina Barr (1815-1883). Their maternal grandparents were Anderson Steedman and Lucretia Fox.

In 1901 these three men along with another brother James Barr Spann removed to Dothan, Alabama and founded the Spann Brothers firm in that place. The company owned 21,000 acres of Florida lands and were stock holders of the famous turpentine company Consolidated Naval Stores of Jacksonville, Florida. In Dothan, Alabama the Spann Brothers were merchants and farmers on a large scale.

Phillip Norman Spann was born 20 June 1869 in Lexington County, South Carolina and died 18 May 1927 in Dothan, Houston County, Alabama. He was married on 24 Nov 1897 in Orangeburg County, South Carolina to Miss Viola C. Stoll and had issue.

Henry Fletcher Spann was born 4 April 1863 in Lexington County, South Carolina and died 30 March 1932 in Bamberg County, South Carolina. He was married about 1894 to Miss Catherine Edna Johnson and had issue.

Marcellus Steadman Spann was born 29 July 1874 in Lexington County, South Carolina and died 12 May 1952 in Dothan, Houston County, Alabama. He was married to Miss Bessie O'Hara and had issue.

Dr. Charles Lewis Spann was a great nephew of the above named men. His father was Joseph Elliot Spann (b.1893) and his grandfather was John Albert Spann (b.1865), another brother to Phillip Norman Spann, Henry Fletcher Spann and Marcellus Steadman Spann.

I am unaware of any connection between the Spann and Wardlaw families.

Joe Spann - Library Manager
Polk County Historical & Genealogical Library
100 East Main Street
Bartow, Florida 33830-4629
(863) 534-4380
Member - Association of Professional Genealogists
"An investment in knowledge pays the best interest."
Benjamin Charleston Raley -- descendants

Looking for descendants of Benjamin Charleston Raley and his wife, Mary L. Benjamin's family is in the 1910 Houston County census, but I have not found them in 1920 or 1930, nor have I found any marriage or death information for any of them. In the 1910 census, their children were Clarence W. (b. 1897); Nora B. (b. 1899); Flora G. (b. 1901); Grace F. (b. 1903); Carl (b. 1906); and Marie (b. 1909).

Benjamin's parents were Charles William Raley and Sarah Belle Neely. Charles was a brother of my gggf, Benjamin M. Raley.

If anyone has any leads about what happened to this family, I would appreciate your sharing.

DNA Testing & Descendants of Joseph & Sarah (Morris) Farmer of Bertie Co., NC

Joseph and Sarah had the following sons: William, Josiah, John, James, Jesse, Luke, Joseph, & King Farmer. Another NC Farmer researcher has informed me that the sons Luke (born c. 1780) and King Farmer (died after 1841, Henry Co., AL) removed to Henry Co., AL and some descendants may live there today, as well as in Houston Co., AL.

I believe that son James Farmer (b: circa 1760) removed to Jackson Co., GA, to Gwinnett Co., and then to Henry Co., GA. We have a descendant of this early GA Farmer family that has provided his Y-DNA for the "Farmer Surname DNA Project" found on the website Family Tree DNA (FTDNA). The compared results had some "very" close matches with other project members that have traced their families back to the Bedford Co., Virginia Farmer's.

We need a descendant from the Luke & King Farmer lines to provide DNA for a comparison with this group. We would like to see if the above James Farmer in early Georgia matches as a son of Joseph, and also to discover if Joseph Farmer came from the Bedford Co., Virginia Farmers.

If the cost of the test is an issue then help with the cost is available. The test results will be used for genetic family history "only". The test is taken from a swab inside the mouth; no blood test is necessary.

Can someone please help us locate a living male Farmer descendant from one of these family lines for the DNA testing and sharing of family history? Your help will be most appreciated.

Whether you are sure of your Farmer family ancestors, or not and would like to join the Farmer DNA Project, then we would love to have you as a member.

The URL for the Farmer DNA Project:

http://www.familtreedna.com/public/farmer

At the top of the page you will find email links in order to contact the Group Administrator and/or co-administrator for more information.

Thanks for any help you can give, TJM

Not sure where the following information came from; but I'm trying to figure out if it can be linked to my grandfather Willie Hobbs or his father Ed Hobbs aka E.D. Hobs.

John Edward Hobbs from Macon County, Georgia. His children Jennie, Jim G (james?),Kate, Barney, Mary and Maggie. 1920 census James moves to Grangerburg near Dothan, AL --- Barney lives in Mitchell County, GA in 1910 but 1920 shows up on Houston County, AL census -- is this the same Barney Hobbs? Is this information correct above? 1920 James (Jim G?) and Barney back in Mitchell County, GA in Sale City east of Camilla, Georgia.....

If anyone can verify or validate the information above please let me know.
Willie Hobbs / Ed Hobbs / James Hobbs / Hobs

I'm desperately trying to find information on my grandfather's side of the family. My GF was Willie Hobbs aka W H Hobbs although he had no middle name the family, as it was common to do back then...used the last name as the middle initial. His father was Ed Hobbs or E Hobs aka Edward Hobbs. Ed was originally from Georgia as were his parents and he was killed by a train October 21, 1911 here in Houston county; Dothan, AL. His funeral was conducted at Selma Baptist but they have no records of anything. Ed was married to a May-Lula (we were always told her name was Mary) on the 1910 census and had stepchildren of "Tenley" although their names were Andrew aka Ander and Noah Finely / Fenley. Ed apparently had a son named James (grown child and perhaps he is the son listed on the 1910 census. Nontheless....I've been going in circles for YEARS and finding no one with any information.

Any one out there with the answers would be appreciated!

Col. SMITH of Camp Rucker August 16.

At ceremonies at his parents’ home, the medal was pinned on his mother by Col. SMITH in the presence of relatives and friends.

Corporal Allen saw service in Australia, the Netherland East Indies, the Solomon Islands, Luzon, Bataan and Corregidor in the Philippine Islands with the 31? Airborne Division.

Corporal Allen was killed in action on Corregidor February 16, 1945, while giving aid to a comrade by administering blood plasma to him. His parents received a letter from his Captain telling that Corporal Allen was taken back to Bataan and was buried with full military honors in American Cemetery No. 1.

The citation accompanying the award follows:

“For gallantry in action at Corregidor, P. 1 on February 16, 1945, Corporal Lloyd S Allen while performing the duties of an aid man during the Corregidor campaign, was treating a seriously wounded soldier. Upon examination, he determined the dire need for additional blood plasma for the wounded man. This much needed plasma was in an exposed position approximately thirty yards away in an area subjected to enemy fire. Without hesitation and with complete disregard for his own safety. Corporal Allen dashed across the exposed area, secured the plasma, and upon returning was mortally wounded. This display of bravery and devotion to duty by Corporal Allen is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service.” Signed by Major General Hall.
**

Over The Wiregrass

Blue Lupine King
W A (Bill) WOMACK the blue lupine King ** these parts with a barn full of blue lupine seed that he is selling to other farmers is one of those success stories you read about but seldom see in person. His story begins back in 1934 when he lived at Gallantine, Tenn. Bill liked to fly and had an airplane. His grandfather, the late J A WOMACK, asked him one day to fly down to Houston County and look over his farm on Ashford route two which he had purchased during World War I. Bill flew down, like the country and decided to stay. He took over the farm with *** *** *** less than $125 in my pocket, and with his own *** how a farm should be run. He began farming in earnest and he began making money. Today he has one of the showplaces in the Wiregrass, a model farm, with terraces cover crops, fine cattle, first class buildings money in the bank, and everything else to stamp him as a successful and ‘know-how’ farmer. Many honors have come his way, including an award last year as a “Master Conservationist”. He has tractors, wants a bull dozer, but scorns the idea of running around his 1300 acre farm on a jeep. Give me a light pick-up truck any day, he says. Bill’s ong s* now is raising blue lupine for commercial purposes, and that in itself is a growing and profitable venture. He raises blue lupine, cleans and stores the seed in a special concrete block warehouse built for the purpose and with special machinery. Then he sells it to farmers who are finding that blue lupine is an answer in an old prayer, although they had their doubts about it no longer than six years ago. Bill bought the farm in 1936 from heirs of his grandfather’s estate and he’s been making it better every day since then. His wife is the former Bannie WALDEN, daughter of the late Dave WALDEN, of Headland. They have a son, Bill, Jr.
**

3 September, 1945
Dothan Youth Seriously Hurt.

Seldon HULSE, of Dothan, was seriously injured yesterday morning near Crestview Fla., when the motorcycle he was riding carrened off the highway and crashed into a tree, it was reported here today.

According to Ewell JONES of Dothan, a member of the City police department and an eye-witness to the mishap, Hulse apparently started to pass another vehicle and the sidecar of the motorcycle caused him to lose control and crash into the tree.

A youth riding in the sidecar and identified by Jones as Luvon CAMERON, also of Dothan, escaped with minor injuries.

Hulse was taken to a Crestview hospital and later removed to Dothan.
