Sorry I am so late to the party. You are related to my husband through your grandmother Dessie and her mother, Sallie Farmer Bearden. What I have on Sallie is pretty spotty and you may already have same info. We were told there were 3 siblings: Raymond, Bessie, & Dessie, but it looks like Raymond was from George Bearden's previous marriage w/Ada Goss. Raymond was very young when Sallie became his step-mother, thus the confusion.
My husband is descended from one of Sallie's children prior to Bearden (she had four before she married Bearden) We think Walter McMunn may have been the father of those first 4 kids. We have a little more info on Sallie's ancestors. If you are interested on comparing notes, let me know. Good luck on your search. Julie

My great granduncle Alfred Byington WALTON (son of John Fletcher and Lucinda ERWIN WALTON) married Miranda CARTER in Jackson County, AL, on 14 January 1874. He is enumerated as A.B. WATTON (misspelling) on the 1880 Federal census of that county. His wife is enumerated as Maranda (another mispelling) and they have two children: Louisa E. (age 4) and John W. (age 2) living with them.
Alfred and other family members, including his father migrated from Jackson County to Grapevine, Tarrant County, Texas between 1882 and 1884. However, he married Jessee SHAW WALTON in Tarrant County, TX on 08 Nov 1889. I cannot locate his first family. They may have died in Jackson County or possibly after the family migrated to Texas.

Andrew Jackson McCoy was my husbands GGGrandfather. He was m. to Louiza Rice. He fought in the Florida Indian War in 1837. He died abt 1892 & Louiza was destitute. She applied for a pension from the War. It discribed A.J. McCoy as being 5ft10in. It said he had black eyes, dark hair, & dark complexion, so sounds as if he may have had Indian blood. She was turned down, as A.J. went by several nick names and they couldn't decide if she was married to the correct McCoy who served in the Indian War. This pension form was sent to me by another McCoy researcher, & I researched the names on it untill I discovered he was my husbands ancestor.

Nelda: I have a passing interest in the McCoy family name. I am not related but am interested because of a possible Cherokee connection. Alexander McCoy was the last chief of the Cherokees at New Echota, GA. McCoy was 1/16 Cherokee so his family had intermarried for a few generations.

Any family lore about Andrew McCoy having NA blood? Possible name connection to Andrew Jackson?

Jerry T

Angela: Greetings.

I'm going to offer an opinion on Mary Jane's Native American heritage; I hope you don't mind. I'll explain why I offer the opinion.

The chances of her being half blood and in Jackson County in 1899 are pretty slim. Chief John Ross, probably the best known Cherokee in this area, was 1/8. Alexander McCoy, the last Chief at New Echota, was 1/16. Most of the inter marrying occured prior to 1800. Of course that does not mean that there were not other Cherokee of higher blood but I truely believe that the vast majority went West in the early 1800's.

I have a hobby of trying to find people in Jackson County that I can prove (to my satisfaction) have Cherokee ancestry. It's pretty hard to do. That is why I even comment on your ancestor. I look forward to following the search.

The report is that Mary Armold, wife of Allen Young Bean and mother of Cap Grider might have been of Native American heritage,to some degree.

Marriage Gillie Ellen Mashburn and John Prince, 1920s, Jackson County

Gillie Ellen Mashburn was born in Jackson County, Alabama, the daughter of Matthew Allen Mashburn and Eliza Jane Sanders. The 1900 census suggests she was born in April 1868 but her parents did not officially marry until June 1, 1869. Gillie married James M. Thrower October 14, 1888, and they had six children before he died between 1903 and 1910. In the 1910 and 1920 census she is listed as a widow.

The 1932 death certificate of one of her daughters, Sarah Jane Thrower Kay, identifies Sarah Jane’s mother as Ellen Thrower Prince. The 1930 census shows an Ellen Prince, age 60, married to a John Prince, age 77. I can find no other information online about this marriage of Gillie Ellen Mashburn Thrower to John Prince. When John Prince died in 1937, his death certificate shows that he was a widower, so Ellen must have died between 1932 and 1937. John Prince's first wife, who died between 1910 and 1920, was named Nancy Elizabeth. Does anyone else have further information on the marriage of Gille Ellen Mashburn and John Prince?

Thank you for the reply. If I learn anything definite, will get back with you.

Interesting, maybe she did use"Mary", however, I've always heard her referred to as Martha Ann Penelope (or is that her daughter?). I am thinking that Penelope might have outlived John (actually, he went by the name of Gus -short for Augustas). Somewhere I saw that marriage listed but not in Madison Co. records...will have to find the info.
There may not even be a marriage record between John L. A. and Luquilla; Duncan Baxter wrote a booklet about 1960 and included many interviews with elderly relatives as well as courthouse research and he had written about John L. A. and Luquilla. At least one of the descendants in J. L. A. line
married a Brown. Don't remember the connection but my g/gfather Brown md 2nd Maude Baxter (she was a good bit younger than he and asked us to call her Aunt Maude; she descends from the Willis Baxter line, collateral to my James Jackson "Jimbo" line)...confusing. At any rate, I am researching, Baxter, Brown, Burt which intermarried sometimes and have common ancesters.
John A., son of John L. A.) is sometimes mistaken for his father and his children's names were similar. That's what makes it so difficult to sort these people out.

BTW, do you know much about the Moore line? My ggg/mother md Tom or George Moore about 1861 and he died in the Civil War and she was left a widow, Serene Elizabeth Igou Moore who later md Napolean Bonaparte Burch of Jackson County. She is my g/mother's g/mother.

Let's go back to the marriage record of John L. A. Brown and Penelope M. Moore in Madison Co., AL in 1826. I think that on the 1850 Jackson Co. census, the M. probably stands for Mary and perhaps that is the name that she preferred.

I have no idea when she died; however, I am skeptical that John married an Indian unless it was after he moved to Dekalb Co. I don't have any connection in my Brown family to anyone of Indian descent.

It would appear from the names of John's children that he was an educated man and perhaps enjoyed reading classic literature. I will tell you that Jeremiah Brown's sons were educated and that my G-GF was Sen. C. W. Brown of the AL State Senate, attended West Point, but graduated from the Univ. of AL and that his brother, Jesse Edward lost a leg in the Civil War, became an attorney and Judge in Jackson Co. John A. Brown built the "Brown-Proctor" house in Scottsboro that now houses the Heritage Center.

Thomas Norman Brown (eldest son of John A.) moved to Jack Co., TX along with the rest of this family after their father died along with their Mother, Judith America Wisdom.
In the generations of this family, the name "Penelope" is seen several times.

Jeremiah Brown's 2nd oldest son was named "Bridges J. Brown" and the last that I find of him he was in a hospital in Richmond, VA 1862. We know that he died. He left no descendants. The oldest daughter was Nancy, but we know little of her except that she married a Mr. Yates and moved away. This is the reason that I believe that the parents of John, Jeremiah and Jesse were John and Nancy Cotton Bridges and that they did come to AL from NC, but I do not have any other records to support this except for family tradition.

As for Jesse Brown, the other brother: In the Will of Jeremiah Brown, he left "the Jesse Brown tract of land" to his oldest son, John A. This would lead me to believe that he died sometime before 1860 and left no wife or heirs.

I live in FL and seldom get back to Jackson Co. these days as I have very few living relatives there now. If any of you still live anywhere near Huntsville, I would suggest that you make a trip to the library and look up court records for this Brown family. I wish that I was able to do so, but, unfortunately, cannot make the trip often now.

If you would like to contact me directly, my email is macatjax@comcast.net

Mary M. Johnson

P. S. The land patents are on line for Jackson Co.

I have one Brown line (Edward Henry Brown family) in Jackson County who moved to TN (was related to the James S. Brown family in North DeKalb.

I have not found a connection between these two Brown lines yet. I also know of a 3rd Brown line, not thought related to James S. Brown line who lived/died young adult in Jackson Co., AL. I think this young lady Jennie Brown who md Will Brown (descends from James A. Brown line) were not related. She died in childbirth-buried with her baby who died at birth- and he died a few years later. Jennie's parents are John A. Brown, b. abt 1835, md 1855 in Jackson, AL to Judith Wilson.

There is a Lycurgus Brown in TX and several familiar family member names, but after thorough research and correspondence from a descendant of this line, this is not the same Brown line as far as we can tellas the Lycurgus Brown of Jackson Co., AL. These people decended from a Samuel Brown (b. late 1700s) of Virginia. It seems like the dates were a bit off for this line to be the same one.

I don't know if this information will assist in your search. My grandmother was Bonnie Marie Brown. N AL, Jackson County area. She married John Worley at the age of 13. My grandmother did have an indian mother and married an irish man 10 years older then herself. I remember very little about my uncles and aunts on the Brown side of the family. My mother's geneology report was given to my aunt after her death a few years ago. I do not know how much information is available on the maternal grandmother Brown. Any interest email me.

The Bynum Families in Jackson County are part of a much larger Bynum family that continued on to the area of Oneonta in Blount County. We have an organization that has been studying this family for years. We are having our 25th annual reunion the last week in September. There will be people there that can trace the several lines of the Bynum family for you. If you are interested in attending please contact me for additional information. daltonn@knology.net
Dalton J.

I am looking for any info on Martha Jane Shoffitt born abt 1825 in KY (d/o Littleton) who married brothers Joseph and William Davis. I cannot find any info or leads on this Davis family and would appreciate any help. Her children with Joseph were Allaphair and Lorenzo and with William they were born between 1853 and 1858. Unfortunately the 1860 census is the only place I find them and only initials were transcribed. Thank you in advance for any help at all!

Hoping someone reconizes these names and are directly or in directly related to me, to help with my genealogy research. John is my 4 times great grandfather.

Are you still seeking information? Margaret Jane Allen is the sister of my ancester, James Madison Allen. Their parents are Benjamin B Allen and Frances "Frankie" Boman.
I don't know Benjamin's parents, but Frankie's parents are Lorenzo Dow Boman and Nancy Baker(supposed to be 1/2 Indian)
The Allen story is that the Allens came from Wales. Benjamin and Frankie lived in LimRock, Jackson County, alabama.
I am a descendent of the line that came to Texas.

Milly Vaughn is 30-39 in the 1830 Franklin, Tennessee census as a widow with 12 children. The name is misspelled as Vawn. She is living next door to David Austin.

She is in the 1840 Jackson, Alabama census with 7 children. Her age is marked 50-59 but I think that was a mistake.

She is listed in the 1850 Jackson, Alabama census with 1 child John. Her age is listed as 50, which would show that the 1840 census was marked wrong. I also believe that John should have been marked as born in Alabama, seeing as how all her older children were born in Tennessee and her younger children were born in Alabama.

She is then listed in the 1860 Jackson, Alabama census with 2 grandchildren.
