As far as I know they have no direct connection to the family of Duncan and Mary Dowdy McIntyre. I imagine that William was a farm hand and Delana could have been helping with the McIntyre children but, other than that, I really do not know anything about them.

Ruth Dowdy-McArthur

Hi Ruth,

I just came across the 1850 Lauderdale AL census with your Duncan and Mary Dowdy McIntyre. Do you by any chance know who William and Delana Bradford are who are listed as the last two people in the household? What was the connection between these two families? I think Delana Bradford may be Delaney Ruth Bradford who married Demosthenes L Davis in the same county on 26 Aug 1852 (my line). Anything you can help with will be most appreciated.

Cheers,
Becky Davis
Columbus OH

Samuel L. Ramsey

Samuel L. Ramsey was the only son of John B. Ramsey and #2 wife Evaline (Dieter) Laws. He was b. abt. 1856 in Franklin Co., AL and died 10 May 1893 in Lauderdale Co., AL. On 9 Nov 1878 in Giles Co., TN he married Martha A. Stacy and they appear on the 1880 census in Lauderdale Co., Al with one son James F/T? Ramsey age 6 mos. and also his widowed mother Evaline Ramsey age 66.

Samuel's obituary found:
"Florence Times" - Saturday, May 13, 1893, pg. 5
Death in East Florence
On Wednesday night last Mr. Samuel Ramsey died at his home in East Florence after an illness of four weeks of typhoid pneumonia. On Thursday afternoon his remains were interred in the "old factory" cemetery near Martin's Mills. Mr. Ramsey was about 37 years old and had lived nearly allhis life3 in Lauderdale. He was a good, worthy citizen. His wife survives him.

Neither his wife, son or mother death found. If his widow Martha remarried we've not found that either. The obituary does not mention children, so we think the son James died before his father.

Also, the cemetery mentioned here "old factory" near Martin's Mills. What cemetery would that be? If anyone can identify this cemetery or knows what happened to the wife Martha, please let us know.
Thank you,
Pam Smith
Dallas, OR

Re: Tintypes of presumed Herston, Butler, Richardson, McDonald family members

I forgot to add that I *MAY* have found Mary Jane McDonald on the Guion Miller roll under one of her married names: M.J. Spears (Applicant #13026). See attachment. It says "Gdn" next to her name, which I would GUESS means guardian?? If she was applying on behalf of her sons, to get them college scholarships, as my Grandmother reports, then I suppose that makes sense. But it seems to me that it would be more likely to list her as a guardian if she were applying because she was the adoptive or foster parent of a Native American child. (In which case, there would not be a genetic link that would assist our family.) Otherwise, why wouldn't she apply on behalf of her self, as opposed to applying as the guardian of the person with Native American blood? As I said, though, I'm not even certain this is her. I know she had the last name Spears at one time and she lived in Oklahoma, so it's possible, but there's not enough evidence there for me to feel comfortable claiming this for certain.
Tintypes of presumed Herston, Butler, Richardson, McDonald family members

I have in my possession the tintypes and photographs which belonged to Elizabeth Richardson McDonald (1838-1912), daughter of Samuel H. Richardson (1808-1873) and Mary "Polly" Butler (1809-1890), and wife of James Stephen McDonald (1831-1896).

According to family history, the pictures are of our Alabama relatives on the McDonald/Richardson/Herston/Butler side of the family. Unfortunately, none of the tintypes are labeled, so I cannot verify that oral history. I would be happy to share the tintypes and photos with anyone who is interested. The entire album is here: (http://tinyurl.com/Tintypes-ElizabethRMcDonald). If anyone wants me to email the entire zip file of photos and tintypes, please send me a message with your email address.

One of the tintypes strongly resembles a picture posted on ancestry.com of Nancy Elizabeth Herston Butler. I suspect my tintype is a picture of Nancy in her teens. For a comparison of the identified picture with my tintype, go here: (http://tinyurl.com/Tintypes-comparison). The original tintype is here: (tinyurl.com/tintypes-3women).

I've minimized the links using tinyurl.com, but all the above links are safe and go directly to my photobucket album. Based on my own, amateur research, I suspect the tintypes were all taken prior to the Civil War in Lauderdale County, Alabama. I have no way of verifying that for certain.

You will note that in a few of the tintypes there are a few very dark complected individuals. Specifically, there is a woman in a few tintypes and a young boy, perhaps 10-12 years old, both of whom look like they could be Native American. As with many of us on these message boards, our family history claims there is Cherokee blood in the family. One family member, Mary Jane McDonald (1868-1940), daughter of Elizabeth Richardson and James Stephen McDonald, supposedly "proved up" in order to obtain government benefits from the state of Oklahoma based on her verified "Indian" heritage. My grandmother was repeatedly told that her Aunt Mary Jane "proved up" in order to get scholarships for her sons in Oklahoma, and that she had been able to find the necessary documentation to satisfy the state as to our family's heritage. However, we lost touch with Mary Jane McDonald's family and thus I have no way to verify this story. From my own research, I can't find any such proof. The closest I have come is in noticing the dark complected subjects in these tintypes and verifying Gabriel Butler's presence as a tenant on Chief Doublehead's reservation. That is probably not sufficient proof of Cherokee heritage, in my opinion, as it is all circumstantial in nature.

Guiseppe "Joe" Masonia

We are working on the Masonia line from Lauderdale County, Alabama. Joe as he was called, Masonia was an immigrant from Italy that worked as a stone mason on the dam(s). We know that he married Mary Jane Smith, daughter of George Washington Smith and Sarah Margaret Harrison Smith. They supposedly married sometime before 1869. Their oldest living daughter was Margaret "Maggie" A Smith who married Benjamin Franklin "River Ben" Thigpen. We have it on authority that he died in May 1880 and is buried in the Hardin Cemetery in Killen, Lauderdale, Alabama. He lived in the Center Star area. At the time of his death he is reported to have lived in the area for four years. We would love someone to do a look up on Joe in the wonderful Lauderdale Library and see if they can find any additional records on him and his family. His son Auz "Os" Weekly Masonia is the descendent of this line that I am working on for my husband's family members.

Go to www.findagrave.com and search for him. There are some John Bush's that died in 1918 but none buried in Lauderdale County. Could be the family had him taken somewhere else.
Edit: Just remember that findagrave doesn't have them all.

You may want try getting copy of his death certificate from state of Alabama. Most of time will give name of cemetery for burial.
Death certificate is somewhat costly, last time I ordered one cost was $15.00.

Also try getting copy of his obit, see if there is listing of cemetery.

Good luck on your research

I also am not related, but beg to differ on one point, and it can be an important one, some early census did state occupation to a point-whether in agriculture, machinery or...my age is showing me up, but the term doctors and teachers come under. yes, they're general, but if you happened to know from family papers that your john kelly (hypothetical) was a steam engine manufacturer, then you can sort out all the John Kelly's who worked in machinery, thus shortening your list of likely John Kelly's to search through to find your specific ancestor. I've done this on several occasions, where I was able to sort out a common name ancestor who had a white collar occupation, priest, teacher or doctor, but even if yours is in agriculture, it makes it easier to slog through the list. the occupations are usually at the end of the list or on the next page in a dual page census. where the town was small, sometimes the forms are just quickly made with lines, often with no written information as to what the segments were for, and sometimes those have no occupation. and in some towns everyone's a farmer, especially in newly formed and not yet incorporated towns. learn the history of the area, it will help you understand your ancestor's life.

I am sorry but I don't have any information on your family. I did find a James and Amanda in Giles County 1880 but they are James Monroe and Amanda Tennessee White. I tried to do a little research on your family but I did not find them. I have discovered that searching Whites is almost as bad as searching Smiths! There was a large population of Whites in both Giles County, TN and Lauderdale County, AL. I am sorry I could not help. Maybe another White researcher can give you a little info. Good luck.

I’m not related to any member of this family.

This is your problem -

Facts you should know about the early census records –

All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++
I am hoping to get some help from you gracious White family experts. I am stuck on my 2nd Great Grand Father James Daniel White born 1844. There are many White Families in the area in the 1850’s which is the earliest I can confirm my family #457 Lauderdale Co Al. They are in Hardin Co TN in 1860, Lawrence Co, TN in 1870 and married to Amanda Brown that same year in Lawrence Co TN as well. In 1880 they are in the Giles Co TN area and seen again in 1900 in Bedford Co TN. Can anyone help me identify them before 1850? Thanks Michael White

Welcome to genealogy, and researching the William Bailey/Racheal Littlejohn line. You have a lot of fun ahead of you. Abram, William's father, has been hard to pin down precisely but I have circumstantial evidence that strongly suggests he was the son of John Bailey (d. ca. 1794) who served as U. S. Ranger after the revolutionary war in present day Charleston, WVA, area on the Ohio Valley Frontier with Daniel Boone. John's main claim to fame is that he married the widow Anne Hennis Trotter who became known as "Mad Anne" Bailey, a famous frontier woman who saved what became Fort Charleston, WV, by riding 100 miles to obtain ammunition, re-enforcements, and supplies during an Indian siege. Racheal is just as interesting as she is descended from Sir Mungo Murray, 2nd Viscount of Stormont, which opens the door to a rich history going back to the 1100s and even to the 400s. That rich history includes the kings of Ireland, Scotland, and England, as well as France, and that general region.

I am the great, great grandson of William Bailey/Rachel Littlejohn. Yes, they were in Kentucky and married in 1837/38 then moved to Crawford County, Illinois. They had a daughter Sarah who first married Frank Littlejohn who passed away and then married my great grandfather Elisha Bishop on August 28, 1881. One of their sons was John Thomas Bishop, my dad was JTB and I am JTB the third. Rachel Littlejohn-Bailey died on March 2, 1886 of Typhoid fever and is buried in Prior Grove Cemetary, in Crawford County.

I would be extremely interested in any additional information you may have on the family line. I got involved in genealogy back in the 1970's but gave it up when I move to Florida in 1977. I have just recently gotten back into it.

Tom Bishop

Re: Stone Familiy surname in Lauderdale County Alabama (or on land prior to)

In the 1840 census listed as transcribed by xxx - pg 3 Stone, Thomas & William ...I have a question about Stone, W [William] the brackets meaning that you have added the info not on film , do you recall if you had access to other research on that man or family?
Here is some background info to help jog your memory......
There are several Stones on early platt maps for Lauderdale - including both a William and a Thomas Stone with some adjacent land parcels. Prior to 1830 there are several Stone marriages listed as taking place in the mid 1820's.
Of these, Samuel Stone who married Matilda Eaton has been traced back into Tennessee and identified by the death record of their son.
In 1830 there is only a John Stone listed with one male in column 2 , I have no idea who these two are.
in 1840 there are 2 Stones, Thomas and William . Thomas served as a Justice of the Peace in 1842. but I do not know how long he served. I know he performed marriages that year for both an Elizabeth Stone and a Jeremiah Stone ( to Susannah Howard). I have NO documents, just ancestry.com record and would love to know if they were related to Thomas or William? Jeremiah also moved to Mississippi. Also of interest is the man named Gabriel Brown who married a Frances Stone in 1833, a second marriage for him, but do not know if Frances was single or widowed. It is possible that she also is on the 1850 census with Jeremiah Stone in Mississippi.
Thomas seems to have remained in Lauderdale, Alabama but Wm did not appear again in Lauderdale. We are trying to find out :
1..if he is the Wm Stone who moved to Marshall Cty, Mississippi abt 1846? ;
2..if he and Thomas Are related?
3... is Frances Stone a sister or sister in law of William and/or Thomas?
4... and of course - who were their parents?
If you have come across anyone with information , PLEASE pass along this inquiry and my Email address.

I am trying to find the right George Bailey who was indicated on William E & Richard Henry Bailey's death records as their father. It also stated mother's name Susan Daly/Daley. Both of these people were buried in Bailey cemetery in Killen,AL. However, I cannot find them listed anywhere pre-1900. Also, all researchers I can find trees online indicate George and Susan married in 1877, which case George must have been married previous to someone else or ? since William and Richard were born 1856/58. Any help is appreciated in finding these people in census records. They seem to be either in Lauderdale or Limestone, and maybe even Giles and Lawrence Tenn.

I am looking for information about a marriage between William E (WE) Bailey to someone last name McConnell, approximately 1877 in possibly Lauderdale County. They had 2 children, Elliot (female) and Henry Dee. I am trying to determine the mother's first name. William married Nancy Harvey in 1885. Thanks in advance.
Anneta

Waterloo homes relocated by the TVA?

My uncle and aunt lived in Waterloo for many years. Up the mountain behind their home was an old log home, three stories tall, counting the small attic room, which appeared to have been used as a bedroom. My uncle always told us that it was relocated up the mountain when the TVA bought up property. I always wondered how in the world they moved it up there. It was perched on the edge of the mountain with lattice work under it. It had slid apart at least 4 or 5 feet back in the late 70's and later fell. It was made out of square logs.

I have just always wondered about the old place and doing genealogy work has made me appreciate it more. It would have set up the mountain behind the old Smokehouse Restaurant, facing the little road that the fire station was later built on.

I would like to know if anyone knows the history of that house, how old it might have been or what family it belonged to.

Stone Familiy surname in Lauderdale County Alabama (or on land prior to)

I am researching Stone families who were in the area of the Indian lands that became Tn, Ky, North MS and North Alabama .. see Chickasaw Land ( - Hardeman Cty Tn + part of Hardin Cty Tn, North Alabama..etc see Chickasaw Seccession aka Jackson Purchase)
. When you look into Tennessee settlements, you find that the majority was once included in Washington Cty, NC. There is on Ancestry, an online book which explains much of the early settlements known as the Cumberland Settlements, the bid for statehood, and the division into 3 counties in Tennessee and again divided many times. Pvt Wm Stone ( our ancestor 's tombstone ( 1796-1880) says he served in Capt Cloyds Tn Militia. There exists a list of that Davidson District unit about 1812, but our Pvt Wm Stone is not on it. I have not found how long Capt Cloyd was in charge. Next we have the statements of sons Josiah and Jeremiah that they were born in Kentucky, whereas the younger children say born in Alabama. Josiah Arthur STONE , son of Pvt William Stone is our connection . I have most of the obvious records from 1850 forward, by then they were in North Mississippi, but do not have much prior data.
There was another Stone family in early Alabama Lauderdale County - Thomas Stone married there abt 1833 and he and his family stayed there.
.....Our Stones were in Lauderdale Cty Alabama census of 1840 and Jeremiah Stone ( a son of William) married there 1842 to Susan Howard(1824-1900). However, by 1846 had moved into Mississippi along with his father and siblings. Did you find land or other records for Alabama ? When researching In Ala , did you see any connection between Pvt Wm Stone's family and Thomas Stone's family? I am hoping you will make copies of your research papers available to us , perhaps by taking photos and attaching them to Pvt Wm Stone on Ancestry.

I do have this : Marshall County Ms, Established: February 9, 1836
Parent County: Chickasaw Land ( as was part of adjacent to the north - Hardeman Cty Tn + part of Hardin Cty Tn.. see Chickasaw Seccession aka Jackson Purchase)
County Seat: Holly Springs. There were several border shifts with adjacent counties.

On genweb -Ms- Marshall County site - tax lists copied as whole pages of film... sifted for Stone households by year:
1837 Robert, Bennett ( this group may be Hardeman Cty Tn gp)
1838 Bennett, Joel, Robert, & GW
1839 Sam, Bennett
1841 Eli, Gabriel, John
1842 Gabriel, John, Eli
1843; Mathilda Mrs Malinde, Bennett, Gabriel,
Did you find any Probate records for any of these Stone families in Mississippi?
..now...notice the new Stone families in 1846 include our Stone group...
1846 William, Josiah, Jeremiah, James, , John A, Thomas, Samuel, Melinde & Bennett Stone
You may have the land purchase record and I was hoping for confirmation of his prior residence on the deed.

I am a female descendant of the White family in Lauderdale County. Ancestry has offered a new type of DNA analysis that is useful even for females and promises to deliver a lot of information on our origins. I just sent mine off a few days ago and it will take a couple of months for the results. I am particularly interested in a connection to the Bradford family that I have been unable to pin down. Bradford, Philemon, and some other names that were common in the Bradford family have been used often in the White family. It will be interesting to see the results.

White family descendents are located throughout central Tennessee and NW Alabama. Many came from a single grandfather who arrived in Virginia about 1640.
Fortunately that grandfather passed along the rare G2a Y-chromosome genetic haplotype.
All males with the White surname have that rare haplotype are his descendents.
Once your haplotype is known connections become easy.
