It's kind of hard to see from this particular picture, but the gentleman standing in the back row second from right is probably my grandfather Ed Zyzyk, who was Co-Pilot for Doodelee-Doo. I think the man standing on the far left may be A.B. Paul. I can most likely get you the names of the other crewmen if you're still interested.

Hi Leah,
Ella Cowan and Johnny Greenhaw/Schrimsher were my great great grandparents also. Their daughter Minnie was my great grandmother. My daughter has been doing a family tree for a high school history project and we are very interested in information on Ella Cowan as well. My grandmother (Laura Inez Peace Worbington, daughter of Charles Maxwell Peace and Minnie Greenhaw Peace) told me that Ella was Cherokee, but I have not been able to find documentation to confirm that or any info on her parents or background other than what you have posted. I would be interested in any further info that you find and I will be sure to share if we should find anything also. Good luck in your search!
Denise Floyd Thibodeaux

Sorry, for some reason I had to change my user name. The only reason I knew the death penalty had been overturned is because Missy's mom, Martha told me about it several years ago. I had kept in touch with her mom over the years and know how losing Missy devastated her. It breaks my heart thinking about what both Jennifer and Missy endured that day. Missy's mom passed also just before Christmas in '12. She was a wonderful woman and I know in my heart she was smiling when Missy was waiting for her on the other side.

She was murdered in July of 1996. She was helping her Mother-in-law move after a divorce. The man Jennifer Thornton divorced came to the house and shot and killed both Missy and Jennifer to death. He was subsequently given the death penalty. After Missy's family appealed to the State of Al. his sentence was overturned and he received life without the possibilty of parole. Missy's family believed he should live everyday realizing what he took away versus being injected and receiving the easy way out. I went to school with and was very close to Missy and her Mom Martha.

James Gibson Montgomery

I am seaching for the first wife of James Gibson Montgomery known only as a Miss Shields who he married somewhere in Tennessee and had two children by her. His second wife was a Mary Steele who he married in Limestone County,Alabama about 1823.
This is the source for the Miss Shields: http://files.usgwarchives.net/al/dallas/bios/gbs465montgome....
1850 census of Limestone Co,Alabama:
James G. Montgomery age 70 b. NC.
Martha M. Montgomery, age 25 b. Alabama. She married James Harvey Stephenson, son of My Samuel Stephenson and Mary Shields in Limestone County,Alabma in 1853.
Mary A. Montgomery, age 22 b.Alabama
David C. Montgomery,age 20 b.Alabama.
James Gibson Montgomery was the son of James Montgomery and Ann Woods from Mecklenburg County,North Carolina.
I suspect that James Gibson Montgomery might have been connected to the several Montgomerys' who settled early in Giles County,TN and were neighbors to the Shields in the Elk Ridge community of Giles Co,TN.My Samuel Stephenson is on the 1820 census of Giles Co,TN.My Samuel Stephenson settled in Limestone Co,Alabama in 1822.
Samuel Stephenson had a sister Margaret who married a James Montgomery in York Co,SC in 1817 and James Montgomery and his wife Margaret Stephenson went to Giles Co,TN before 1820. After 1820 James Montgomery disappears. There is a book on line called "Archibald Steele and his Descendants" Mary Steele who married James Gibson Montgomery is included in this book. The author of the Archibald Steele book claimed that James Gibson Montgomery's first wife was a Margaret Stephenson. James Harvey Stephenson who married Martha M. Montgomery is also in the book. My Stephenson surname is spelled "Stepherson" in the Archibald Steele book. Archibald Steele settled in York County,SC and did my Stephensons which included Samuel Stephenson.
George Alexander Stephenson, son of my Samuel Stephenson,is on the 1880 census of Limestone Co,Alabama.
James Gibson Montgomery is buried in the Montgomery Cemetery near Elkmont.
My sister in law's father has a WWW2 memorial in the town he lived in at one time and was on the census there one time in his life even though he did not live there after he married and went to war.

Just as in my sister-in-laws fathers case it could be the town/city/county, a service organization or club in that area put the memorial in the cemetery.

Someone sent me the information by email and I was in touch with the Alabama Archives about several things at that time so not sure if it was them or an individual genealogist. Due to conversations I had with the Archives they are the ones that sent me the photo of the Ard man wanting to know if I could identify him so it could have been the Archives that gave me the information on the grave in Eufaula. It has been so long ago that I have forgotten.

I'm sure the CT. Cotton family must have at least have known the Cottons in Dale Co. because they all lived in Randolph Co. Ga. at the same time.

Thanks Kristi - that was the tip I needed! I actually had already found the information you sent me, but I assumed it was complete. I went to the health department and ordered the certificate, and within about 10 minutes I had my answer! Jesse Sirten is indeed buried at Antioch Cemetery. I have a call in to one of the trustees of the cemetery in the hopes that he will have a record that tells what plot he is in. That is one less incomplete branch on the old family tree :)

You're welcome for the help, but, I have to tell you that death certificates were required beginning around 1910 (+/- a couple of years). I found his death record on familysearch.org (https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/JDKJ-RX5). At the bottom of the record is a film/certificate #. If you'll put that on your dc request form, it'll make it quicker and easier for them to find it.
This is a transcription, and does not always show all of the information, which is why I suggested the original death certificate. You can get it from the county health department for $16 or from Wallace State for about $5. It may be that his funeral wasn't serviced by Sprys. If you get a chance to go to the Limestone County Archives, they have microfilm records from several funeral homes; I don't remember how far back they go, though.

Hope this helps,
Kristi

Thanks, Kristi. Unfortunately, I have tried all your suggestions and still have had no luck. I spoke to a gentleman at Spry's Funeral Home with the hope that there would be a death record somewhere. According to him, death certificates did not become common until the late 1930s / early 1940s. With Antioch Cemetery being a country cemetery it is not laid out by plots as the city cemeteries are. I did go out to the cemetery yesterday to see if I could find anything that would give me a definite reason to believe that Jesse Sirten is buried where my relative said he was buried. While I did not find anything to confirm or deny this, I did find the grave, with a marker, for Dee Higgins. He was the first husband of my great-grandmother and is buried a few places down from where I was told Jesse is buried. That, at least, gives me a glimmer of hope that this is the right cemetery, even though it does not prove it beyond a doubt. As for obituaries, I checked microfilm of both of the papers that were in circulation locally at the time of Jesse's death and found nothing.

Soooo, the search continues...

If you haven't already done so, I would suggest checking the official death certificate for the exact burial info; then check either the funeral home and/or the cemetery office. You might also want to check for his obit. It may be that he is buried in Limestone County, but with no marker. There should be a record somewhere.

Good luck,
Kristi AuBuchon
www.tnvalleygenealogy.com

Yes, I've been to Athens City Cemetery in Limetone Co., AL and found that grave. I also visited the grave in Eufaula. The marker in Eufaula is in a Cotton family plot and I looked up the family. They were from CT and several members are found in Barbour and Henry counties. One descendant, George, was postmaster of Dothan in Houston Co., AL at one time. There is no one who could fit the description of the S. R. Cotton buried at Eufaula in this family.

I now have copies of the pension application for Samuel Richard Cotton's widow. She gives his date of death and the unit he was with in the civil war. I gave the date to the person who posted the memorial on findagrave, and it has been added there.

I found the marriage information for Sarah Cotton married to James Robinson and for Sallie Robinson when she married Alex McCall in Dale Co., AL. The book, "Cotten Picking" said she was married to a McGuire; that was in error. I did find the 1920 census where Sarah McCall was living with her great nephew, James Ransom Godwin, in Coffee Co., AL. She is buried at Mt. Olive at Ariton, Dale Co., AL.

Also, the VA shows a record for providing a marker for S. R. Cotten at Athens but not for the one at Eufaula.
I reactivated an old email and found over 2000 emails and among those were 2 from you.

One comment was about the grave for S.R. Cotton buried in Fairview Cemetery in Eufaula Al. Someone told me years ago that there is not an actual body buried there but some organization put the grave there to honor a Confederate Soldier because he had lived in the area at one time or had enlisted there. They were unsure where he was buried but I later found his grave in Limestone. The information on that grave is from NARA.

As for Sarah McCall I found her on that census several years ago and found the death record.

Burial place of Jesse Sirten (Sarten)

I am looking for information regarding the place of burial for Jesse Moore Sirten. Date of death was 8 April 1921 in Limestone County, Alabama. A cousin, who is since deceased, told me Jesse was buried at Antioch Cemetery in Elkmont, Alabama, but there is no marker at the site with his name on it. Limestone County cemetery records do not list Jesse anywhere within the county.

Jesse was a son of John Henry Sirten and Mary Georgia Tyree. He (Jesse) was first married to S.E. Cody, then to Mary Melissa Suzanna White. Her first husband was a Higgins, then after Jesse died she married Floyd Mitchell. She is buried beside Floyd at Prospect Cemetery in Giles County, Tennessee.

Other possible spellings for his last name are Sartin, Sarten, Sirtin, and Sartain.

Alfred Riggs & wife Hannah were parents of my gggrandmother, Minerva Josephine Riggs who married her first cousin, A. W. Riggs in Conway county, Ark. I am trying to prove that Alfred was the son of William Riggs, who was the son of Reuben Riggs. A. W. & Minerva and their son, Lindsey Taylor Riggs are buried in the Riggs Family Cemetery near Morrilton, Ark. After Hannah died, Alfred married a Marriania or "Mari" Scott in Arkansas. Evidently when he died somewhere near Crow Mt. Ar., the family was divided because cannot find any record of his being in the family cemetery or anywhere else. Some hints of an unmarked grave on Crow Mt. or near Lewisburg, Ark. Any other info?
