You are not alone in desiring info on Evan Shelby. In Talladega Co., Al., recorded in Deed Bk. A, pg. 26, is the following: Johnathon H. Shelby for natural love and affection for Benjamin Newton Kilpatrick and Francis Marion Kilpatrick, minor children of Thomas Kilpatrick and his wife, Martha Kilpatrick, a certain slave. 11 Sept. 1834. Wit: J.D. Shelby, Thomas Bullion
In the "History of Methodism in Al., lpg. 471 "leading and active men in the Talladega Circuit from the beginning of 1833 to the close of 1845 were : Jacob D. Shelby, John Driscoll, Thos. D. Barr, James B. Watson, James Hampton, etc." The above mentioned Thomas Kilpatrick and wife Martha (nee Lyons) were from Ga. She is back in Newton Co, Ga. by 1850 with children, only the above two mentioned born in Al., the rest in Ga., but Thomas either dead or gone by 1850. A "Kilpatrick" (no first name mentioned) was also a minister in above area. We think it probably the above mentioned Thomas.
I found in Tn. Gen. Records- EArly Settlers from State and Co. Archives by Whitley - pg. 77 Rev. Warrants - Evan Shelby, one of the commissioner's guard, 1200 A, reg. 10 March 1788. The land was in Davidson Col, Tn, on Stewart's Cr. adjoining lands of Moses Shelby, northeast corner. Entered 6 Feb. 1784 in Rutherford Co. The first land and poll tax for Davidson was in 1787 and Evan was listed with 4 polls.
The person I am trying to help contacted a person who has researched and written about Shelby's. She stated that nobody seems to know much about Evan. Only that he was in Lowndes Co, Al. 1830 and 1840 but had no info on his children, but suspected he might be the father of the above Johnathan or at least have a John.
She suspects that my friend is connected to John of Moses and Isabel (Alexander) Shelby, likely thru John And Rebeccas son Evan who married a Harriette A. Kirkpatrick (or Kilpatrick?). The above mentioned Moses and Isabel(Alexander) Shelby were from Mecklenburg Co, NC, and his will was proved Jan. 1777 - Will Bk. F, pgs 155-157. Names sons Wm. and John, leaves son Evan Shelby that plantation on Caldwells Cr.. Names sons Thomas, Moses and several daughters.
The only Kirkpatrick or Kilpatrick family that I can think of that Evan may have married Harriette from is the family of Valentine Kirkpatrick from Mecklenburg, which later became Cabarrus. I know that some of his sons went down to that area.
Does any of this help or did I make it more confusing?
