Buried in Block D of Oakwood Cemetery in Troy (Pike Co.), AL is one Elizabeth GRISWOLD (died 8 Nov 1895, aged 76 yrs., 7 mo., and 20 days), wife of William HYMAN.
My interpretation of the census, cemetery, and various other records on this family results in the following short outline of Elizabeth's children:
1. John HYMAN? b. 1832
2. Cicero Stephens HYMAN b. 1834
......m. Emily WOOD
3. William HYMAN b. 1838
4. Sylvanus Walker HYMAN b. 1840
......m. 10 Dec 1865 Pike Co., AL: Christian C. LEWIS
This Elizabeth (GRISWOLD) HYMAN [born 19 Mar 1819 GA] was surely the same Elizabeth HYMAN in the 1840 census of Macon Co., on the same page with S. (Stephen) GRIZZLE [born 1780-90] and J.C. (James Crawford) GRIZZLE [born 1812 GA], and beside A. (Alfred) RIGBY. Note that Alfred RIGBY married 16 Nov 1835 in Troup Co., GA: Martha GRISWOLD [born ca 1816 GA].
I believe that James Crawford, Elizabeth, and Martha GRISWOLD/GRIZZLE were three of the children of Stephen GRISWOLD/GRIZZLE and wife Elizabeth HARRISON, who married 27 May 1819 in Warren Co., GA. Other siblings of these three included Thomas [born ca 1813], William M., Nancy [b. ca 1818?; marr. Eli RIGBY], Wiley G. [born 1820], and John Jeptha GRISWOLD/GRIZZLE [born 1822]. Note that the spellings "GRIZZLE" and "GRISWOLD" were used almost interchangeably.
Stephen GRIZZLE's father was Wiley GRIZZLE, born ca 1750's to 1760's, died 1820-23 in Warren Co., GA. I believe that Wiley's son (and thus Stephen's brother) Clement GRIZZLE was my ancestor.
I would be most interested in any Macon Co. records on this GRIZZLE family. I believe that both Clement and Stephen may have died in Macon Co. between 1840 and 1850.
