So, I'm picking this back up after years of not dabbling much in it. It looks as if Henry M is the Hastings that I'm looking for. As mentioned earlier, my Papa still wants to visit New Market and the dam. We're headed that way in about a week. I'll try to find out more information if I can but his memory is fading quickly and has some rough days. I've questioned him a few times and haven't been able to get any more information than what we've all found out on our own.

If anyone researching these families would like to share information that would be great. I am specifically researching the Taylors, but our Taylor family in Madison County Alabama are married to Wilhelms and Russells. My husband is a Taylor and his 3rd great-grandfather came from Ireland and eventually settled in Madison County in the areas of Gurleysville and New Hope. His name is Unknown Taylor, but his wife was Elenor (born around 1790) and their children are John, Francis, Esther, Hugh and Rosie. My hubands ancestor is Hugh (his 2nd great gf). I know alot about this family, and have done a ton of research, but I am on a mission to find the name of Elenors husband. Their is a ship list that matches this family, with the father listed as Hugh, but they have three boys. The first son is John, which matches later census records with only Elenor as the head. But then there is a Robert and William, which are not on the census records; however, there is a 9-10 year gap between John and his next sibling Francis on the census records. Something could have happened to these boys, or it is not our family. I have just enlisted the help of Madison County Records asking them to look up Rosie's marriage license to see if her father's hame is listed.. Anyone know anything about this family?? Thanks.. I put Kirksey in here because my husband's great-grandfather has a Kirksey listed as a boarder in a West TN census...

Here's a transcription of the death notice in The Southern Advocate for Wednesday, July 28, 1852:
"On the 4th inst, near New Market, Thomas Johnsoln, formerly a citizen of this place."
Note that "inst" means "in the present month", in this case July of 1852.
"ULT" would signify the preceding month.

I've also attached 2 jpg files of the obit; hope they come through OK.
This is a normal notice of this early time period. Most do not reference a family relation and even rarer is a mention of a cemetery or a funeral home.
"Personals" are usually more informative in trying to tie together family members, but again you have to be lucky to have your family of interest talked about in a personal.

Sidney
Hello Sidney,

Thanks very much for your prompt response. I'm interested in the "Thomas Johnson m. Catherine Hill". He moved with his family from Madison Co to Calhoun Co in 1832, which explains why there are no burials recorded in Madison. He died Feb or early March, 1852, but the delay between death and obit might be due to distance & communication delays.

If you could also copy a blank order form for me I could handle future orders by mail. This is the only time I've ever been unable to access an Ancestry file.

Many thanks,

Grady

In addition to the Library Obituary Index, there are several other
local on-line resources that may be of help. Of these, the only one
that has any information for a Thomas Johnson of that timeframe is
the Madison County Records Center Marriage Index which lists some
4 Thomas Johnson marriages of that time period.
I list them here,
Thomas Johnson m. Ellen P. Skelton, license date 9 Nov 1839
Thomas Johnson m. Elizabeth Lewis, 14 Jan 1820
Thomas Johnson m. Manerva Leo, 24 Dec 1849
Thomas Johnson m. Catherine Hill, 29 Nov 1817

These just show that the two were married with appropriate signatures;
no other family information, birth dates, parents etc and the like.
http://madisoncountyal.gov/mcrc/

This Madison Records Center also has a probate index but no Thomas Johnson is listed for time period.

FindAGrave has no Thomas Johnson's listed for Madison County, AL of that time period.
www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi

The local Huntsville Public Cemetery, Maple Hill, has no Thomas Johnson listed for that time period
http://maps.hsvcity.com/cemetery/

Hope this will help, or at least narrow your search,

Sidney

Last week Ancestry released a new database: Madison County Obituary Index, 1819-2006. The catch is that you can only access the index through Ancestry. The actual records are accessible only through the Huntsville-Madison Library website, and it is apparently blocked to users outside the US. Since I live in Europe I can't get to any of these records.

This leads to my request: the index shows an obit for Thomas Johnson, published in The Southern Advocate, July 1852. I would be very grateful if someone would download this file and send it to me. I believe he was my ggg grandfather who moved to Calhoun Co in 1832. Also, I will gladly reimburse for any charges incurred.

Thanks in advance,

Grady Lloyd
lloydgrady@yahoo.com

My Steger line connects with yours. I am taking up on work my father started in 1972 so it has not been touched since the internet came into being (so bear with me!) My family goes down from Francis George Steger to Samuel to Robert M b 1782 to Alfred M b 1804 to James ALfred b1831 to John Cornelius b 1872 to John Banker b 1907. I have lists of siblings on all of these but they do not jive (completely) with any I have seen on this web site. The mother of Samual seems to be different everywhere I look and the children of Samual and Robert M. is really jumbled. I would be glad to send you what I have and you can take it for what is is worth. Let me know.

Thank you for the help.
I have spoken to a few members at the library, That is were I get a large amount of the information I have today. I have even made a few trips to Moontown and found the land were John P. and Rebekah use to live.
My intrest lies with the Steger Family over the past 100 years. Those are the ones who seem to be a needle in the haystack. If you know what I mean. It is difficult to make some people realize that you are a relative to them when they wont even give you the time of day.
At one time, I sent out nearly 80 large envelopes of information about the Steger Family in Madison Co. to every living person with the last name across the Huntsville area.
I had three of those come back with " person has deseaced' on them and I actually got two phone calls. One of whom, I try to stay in close contact with, the other who told me it was none of my darn businesss. So, how do I deal with that?
Genealogy is not all roses all the time.
Oh well, back to the drawing board again.
Thank you for the help you were able to provide.

Sylvia
Nicole Horton and I broke up about a month after she left the request for information in 2003. Please do not attempt to provide information to Nicole Horton or her family about any one of the Hunt family members. Nicole Horton and some of her friends set me up and I ended up doing 4 years in prison because Nicole Horton turned states evidence in a Aggravated Battery W/A Deadly Weapon to Inflict Great Bodily Harm against a man named Shawn Christopher Mayton. Shawn Christopher Mayton at the time of the incident was an escaped prisoner from Texas. Shawn Christopher Mayton was visiting my home at the request of Nicole Horton in February of 2002 against my wishes. Shawn Christopher Mayton started beating his girlfriend (Sherry Mahoney) in my living room and I snapped. My dad was Special Forces and taught me alot of military techniques in his Karate Studio. Sherry Mahoney did atleat 2 years for Assault, I did 4 years, but I do not know if Nicole Horton got any time or not. My sister Koreeda Christine Hunt and my mother Sandra Lee Hunt convinced Nicole Horton to testify against me instead of trying to prove I was defending myself and the people in my home against Shawn Christopher Mayton. If you look up Shawn Christopher Mayton's record, you will see several assault cases mostly against women. I have never hit a women in my life and never will. I am currently attending the University of Phoenix, Military Division in Columbus, Georgia. I have a 3.82GPA with 44 credits. If anyone has information about Roy Phillip Hunt please contact me at TonyLRHunt@email.phoenix.edu or tonyhunt40@gmail.com

I have an update! Someone in Tenn. noticed that on one of Thomas Monroe Reynolds son's, (Herman) when Herman signed up for the draft, his next of kin is listed as "T M Reynolds, living in Madison Co, AL". So he is in Madison Co AL in 1918 and back in Warren Co at his son's in 1920 and dies soon thereafter. So I'm looking for a Thomas Reynolds living in Madison in 1918 and who fathered a son Thomas out of wedlock born between 1900 and 1920 with a father born in Tenn. and living in Madison in 1918 as a younger person. I have never been able to find Thomas Monroe Reynolds in the 1910 but I'll go check 1910 in Madison Co. next. This was exciting because it's the first evidence I've had that Thomas Monroe Reynolds ever left Tenn. and looks promising that there could be other descendants of the Reynolds line when I thought this line of males were all dead with no descendants since none of Thomas Monroe Reynolds sons had any kids which is strange.

Thanks everybody, I think we have ruled out Thomas Westley Reynolds Sr and Jr as the out of wedlock son of Thomas Monroe Reynolds of DeKalb/Warren Co, TN. I see there are two other Thomas Reynolds listed in the obit list. Does anyone know anything about them? I was trying to narrow down when this Thomas Monroe Reynolds son Thomas lived in Huntsville. My mother was born in 1932. Certie her aunt died in 1974. I think we can rule out that Certie would have told Mama about her (Certie's) brother in the 30's because Mama was just a child. Certie lived with my mother/family in the 40's so I would think that was most likely the time period this conversation took place that she had a 1/2 brother living in Huntsville named Thomas Reynolds that she wanted to go look for since they had never met. So I believe I am looking for a Thomas Reynolds living in Huntsville in the 40's and I would think he was born in TN because I have no record that Thomas Monroe Reynolds ever left DeKalb/Warren Co. I think the mother was from TN and later they moved to Huntsville or Thomas left home and settled in Huntsville. Any input welcome.

The father of Thomas Westley (Wesley) Reynolds, listed in the Madison County Register of Births as being born on 17 Dec 1911, was Thomas Wesley Reynolds, Sr. (17 Apr 1878 - 20 Jun 1938). Thomas Jr. died on 6 Jan 1976 and was married to Hattie Terrell who died in 2004. They are all buried in the Fowlkes Cemetery in Madison County, Alabama.

From Alabama death certificate records, Thomas Sr.'s parents were R.L. Reynolds and Mary Eliza Van Treece.

Yes, it is entirely possible. His first wife could have gotten a divorce based on abandonment, which I have seen in my own family research. I found one that consisted of a few sentences in a court minute book in 1899.

I will look up the obits the next time I go to the library (probably Thursday). The obit might provide clues. I'll let you know what I find out.

See the Madison County Register of Births, 1881-1912, at this link:
http://madisoncountyal.gov/mcrc/QR.html

The listing is not completely in alphabetical order. There is a birth listed for Thomas Westley Reynolds on December 17, 1911. The mother is listed as Rosia J. Reynolds. The listing shows the father only as Reynolds who had been married twice.

The Madison County marriage records list a marriage for Tom Reynolds and Rosa Blair on November 14, 1903 (Vol. 28, page 547). Madison County marriage records before 1936 only show the names of the groom and bride. The index is at this link:
http://www.madisoncountyal.gov/mcrc/searchmarriage.shtml

The Huntsville Public Library index of obituaries lists an obituary for Rosia Reynolds on March 29, 1963.
You have certainly been busy on my behalf, and I am happy to have all data, negative or not! Yes, George Weston married my father's Aunt Mary, and I even believe that her second husband, Charlie Baldwin, is also buried at Fowlkes Cemetery.
I have transferred your comment about Mary Dennis Weston Baldwin to her listing on the Johnson Family Tree, and thank you very much. I originally planned on two trees for the two families but have since realized it is better to combine them. Of course I am hoping to someday contact some of the Weston descendants and see what lore has been passed down in their family about George Weston and Walter Johnson's trip to Alabama. My earliest records of the Dennises are in Tennessee, so I believe the marriage`s both took place in Alabama.
To answer your question, I should certainly look in Fowlkes Cemetery too for my grandfather, and I will. It's just that my father well recollected the Fowlkes Cemetery and described how to find my grandmother, Cynthia's, grave, told who was buried next to her, and so forth, and he did not mention his father. I am working with both writings and recorded audio tapes of his, and haven't finished the tapes yet, but I believe I have covered most of his early life.
Once again, I cannot thank you enough!
It appears Walter Johnson and George Weston married sisters, Cynthia Dennis and Mary Dennis, which would explain why the families traveled from Michigan together and lived next door to one another.

Since George Weston and Cynthia Dennis Johnson are both buried in Fowlkes Cemetery, why wouldn't this be a possibility for Walter Johnson? There are many unmarked graves in that cemetery which has been in existence since the early 1800s.

Hi, I am looking for some info on my great grandmother. She died in 1922 in Maysville, Alabama. Her name was Mattie Hardin. She had several children, one was my grandmother Laura Mae Hardin-Newby, another was Richard Henry Hardin, and the last one I know of was Jimmy Stone. If any one out there has any info on this lady, her parents, pictures, or brothers and sisters, please reply to this post. Thanks ahead of time. Dandknewby1

Seeking Thomas Reynolds from Huntsville approx. early to late 1900's.

I have been made aware that my great grandfather, Thomas Monroe Reynolds 1851-1920 from DeKalb & Warren Co, TN abandoned his family after being told that his wife could not have any more kids. This would have been around 1900 or a little later but not much later. I found an old letter my mother wrote where she states that her favorite aunt, Certie, daughter of Thomas Monroe Reynolds & Mary Jane Tittsworth told her that Thomas, her father, fathered another child after leaving and his name was Thomas Reynolds also although he already had a son Thomas Reynolds. He was stated to be living in Huntsville. I don't know the mother. I'm the last living member of this family and I was very excited to learn there might be another line still to pursue. I think this Thomas would have been born between 1900-1920. The TM Reynolds family are all in a pic together in 1900 and they are apart in 1910 and TMR dies in 1920 so I think sometime between 1900-1910 would be a good estimate of when the mystery son was born. If anyone can help me identify this Thomas Reynolds that lived in Huntsville somewhere between 1900 and when he died if he is dead, I would love to hear from you. I have this family well documented on ancestry under the username montanapets and select "Armstrong Family Tree."
Dianne
di@montanapets.org

You have confirmed my guess was right--Cynthia married (1904) another Johnson after the death of her husband (1900).

I will check the Potter's Field marker at Maple Hill Cemetery for Walter Johnson the next time I go there. I will also check the cemetery books at the library. The Maple Hill Cemetery records prior to 1910 were lost in a fire many years ago. Are there any obituaries or other records you want in Madison County? I would be happy to get them and send them to you via e-mail.

Hello familyfinder2012!
And thank you so much for your efforts. The family you found on the 1910 census was my step-grandfather, Oscar Johnson, my grandmother, my father, my father's little brother, and my great grandparents. I was told that it was just a coincidence that both of these men were named Johnson -- we called my step-grandfather "Uncle Oscar."
It is obvious by now that there is some mystery surrounding the life and death of Walter Johnson, but enough of the story has been found to be true, that I believe that he actually is buried there somewhere in Huntsville _around_ 1900. The family story is that Walter Johnson and George Weston came south from Michigan or Wisconsin around 1880. We have found George Weston and his family living with and near my father's family in Madison County, and Mr. Weston told the census worker that he was born in Michigan, so we have concentrated our efforts there so far. Sadly we have had not much luck. My father told me that George Weston and Walter Johnson both joined the Tennessee Militia at one point, and the only scrap of evidence that I have is a small bit of paper stating that a Walter JohnsTon was a member in the 1880s -- the portion of the files that would have contained George Weston's record was destroyed by fire, so this little piece of paper which I got a copy of of from the Tennessee State library and archives is really all that I have, and shaky at that :) (There certainly is room for skepticism in this tale -- I just want to know the truth, whatever it is!)One more thing, George Weston is buried at Fowlkes Cemetery too!

My family tree on ancestry.com, what there is of it, is called The Johnson Family Tree and and I will send you an invitation to make it simple -- it's completely public.

Thank you once again for your interest and for the info about the records in the Huntsville Library.
Carol Johnson Brooks, Tuscaloosa, AL

His residence at death was Meridianville, Madison County, Alabama. According to records on Ancestry, he was born in Frankewing, Giles County, Tennessee. There is a Pisgah Cemetery (aka Mount Pisgah Cemetery) located in Giles County, Tennessee, near Frankewing. Here is a link to the cemetery on Find A Grave:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&GSsr=12...;

That is one fact that I overlooked. Willard A. Young's grandparents are buried in Mr. Pisgah in Giles County.

Both of his parents died in Madison Co., AL but didn't have their burial locations either. It makes sense that they probably are all buried there as well.

I had my "blinders" on, when it listed the cemetery location as being in Meridianville.

Thank you very much,

Tom

Here is the 1910 Census record for the Oscar H. Johnson and Cynthia Dennis who married in 1904 in Madison County. Note the wife's parents live with them and their last name is Dennis. The names fit, but not the marriage date (1894) and death date (1900) for Mr. Johnson you state.

This Cynthia Dennis Johnson died 22 Nov 1948 in Huntsville, AL and is buried in the Fowlkes Cemetery in Monrovia, Madison County, AL with her parents, James and Livina Dennis. Oscar H. Johnson died 21 Nov 1966 and is buried in the same cemetery.
