LDS microfilms covering deeds, court records, and probate.

Hi!

I'm wondering if any researchers out there have been through the deeds, court records, and probate microfilms of Madison County? I'm especially interested in the deed records. When checking the LDS site, I noticed that there were multiple deed and probate indexes. I am interested mainly in the period from 1809 through 1824. Can anybody tell me which books cover that period? Thanks!

Robert Schneider
Dent family in Madison--looking for fellow Dent researchers

Hi!

I'm interested in a family by the name of Dent. I have noticed the Dent surname in early Madison County records. The earliest record I have of my Dent family is the 1830 Jackson County, AL census. It shows Joseph Dent, born app. 1780-1790. Later records show his wife to have been Mary Lucinda, born 1793, Georgia. Joseph himself was born in GA. I suspect that Mary Lucinda's maiden name was either Hall, Keel, or Bracewell. In 1854, every member of the family moved to Pope County, IL.

I have seen the Dent surname in many Georgia and Alabama records. However, I have never been able to connect my family to any of them. What now leads me to Madison County is that Mary Lucinda and Joseph had a first son named Joshua Wilson Dent. He always stated birth in 1818, in Alabama. It couldn't have been in Jackson because that was Cherokee territory and there's no evidence that the family was part of the squatter movement. Considering that there were Dents in Madison, I just wonder if the family might have moved to Madison first, then to Jackson after Jackson opened to legal white settlement.

Thanks for any help!!

Robert Schneider

BATES Family -- Huntsville, AL

Hi & good day everyone, I have finally had a reply to my message
concerning the Bate's line. I am now in touch with my cousins, from
Charley Bates 2nd family, the joy in my heart is overfilled, but sad
cause my mom, never had the chance to know them. But alas they know
no more on Charley then we did except that is parents name may have
been John Bates, & Mary or Martha Unknown. If census reports are
correct Charlie states that his parents are from Tn. Also I have
found that Ethel Bates married a Unknown Bragelton before the 1930
census. Charley married Alvie Mathis first, 3 children, Then A Ms.
Georgia Middleton, 9 children, they lived in Huntsville awhile then
moved on to Chattanooga, Tennessee, Charley pulled another leave em
with children all alone, & came back to Huntsville, mid to late
1950's. We also believe that he had or worked at a little shop,
maybe Pike St.??, where he fixed watches & was good at it. Also I
now know his brother was named Ollie Nolan Bates & had 2 children,
Ollie Nolan {Jr.?}, & Virginia {Jenny} Bates, mother unknown. She
may have married a Shavers, I think she had a son named Chis.
Charley had a picture of a Jacob & Naomi Cagle, 9th ave, SW
Huntsville, in his belongings, anyone know who they may have been? I
don't believe Ethel & Dutch were ever married, just my thoughts,
don't mean any harm to anyone. I get this by odd commits that keep
flowing back into my mind. I was a young girl when we would visit
Ethel & Dutch after Charley's death. All this was prior to 1976 when
i married. Please 1 family has been found, help us find others & our
roots, thank you, Ruth
William SULLIVAN m. Sallie BROWN -- Afr.-American

Looking for an African American family of Sullivans in the Gurley area. I'm looking for a William Sullivan who married a Sallie Brown in 1875. We don't have very much information on this family yet. Sallie, we were told, had been a slave. They had a son named John that was supposed to have been born on the plantation grounds in 1884. The last name of Sullivan was supposed to have been taken from the slave owner of the plantation. We think William and Sallie were born around 1855. John was raised later on in Colbert County near Sheffield. I found a census from 1870 that may be William. Does anyone know anything about this family or have any ideas on how to find them ? I've just located the marriage certificate information.

Lula Turner Williams m. Valentine Haggard Wells

I have attempted to find the family of Lula T. Williams with NO good results. I know she married Valentine H. Wells and lived until her death in Plevna. I found her in the 1880 census in Coffee County Tennessee -age 15- in the home of Robert Williams and Susan Hampton Williams next to Ransom Hampton, her grandfather. In the household are other sibilings---- Robert does not list a place of birth for his father-- he says his birth place is Alabama.
How did Lula get to Madison County? What happened to her siblings and parents? My father said family legend said one of the brothers had to flee because of killings and barn burnings. (Madison or Coffee County?) The Robert J. Williams of Madison county does not fit. I need any help I can get on the Williams family line.
Sandra Wilson

A Joseph Nelson gave permission for son Samuel Nelson to marry Ann Parsons whose mother, Ann Patton Parsons gave permission for her daughter to marry Samuel Nelson.

It is said that this Joseph Nelson them moved to Madison Co., AL where he died ca 1834. Joseph Nelson served in the Rev. War and that a plaque on the Court House has his name.

It appears that this Joseph Nelson married Lucy Tate but no where is there a son Samuel.
I am looking for anything on this Massacre by the Indians. This happened June 1794. All of the White men were killed on a boat that was going to Mississippi. My 4th great-grandfather was William Scott and he was the Uncle to James and John Pettigrew what were also on the boat. There were 3 other men that were on the boat that were killed also that day, Mr. Tate, Mr. Young and Mr. Steward. The 3 women and several children and some of their Slaves were put in a boat and were allowed to float on down the river to New Orleans.
I would like to hear more on this story and where were the men buried.
They took this case to the 8th Congress, 2nd Session, No. 160. I would like to see the paper work on this and any other court papers. Who were the women and children and who did they belong to??????

I am trying to track down the final resting place of John Read/John Porter. Read was his slave name while Porter was an alias that he used as a free man.

According to CW pension documents, he was buried at Glenwood Cemetery. This was according to Sexton's records at the cemetery. He died 10/21/1911 and was born January 1825.

I have strolled through the cemetery without finding a headstone there. Also contacted the city of Huntsville and Maple Hill Cemetery officials to try and see if these Sexton's records still existed. According to all, they have no records.

This man was enlisted into an integrated Union unit from the state of Alabama during the Civil War.

Does anyone have any more leads on where I might turn to try and find his burial place? If it is unmarked, seems like it would be fitting to get him a headstone.

-Ryan

Military Photo? -- Ward A, Huntsville, Alabama 1898

Found a photograph of an ancestor dating November 1898.
It appears to be a hospital tent, or military photograph from a great uncle. He names the men, does not mention the nurses, or even his own name. Dr. Fulcher, Frank Applebaum, Frank Hill, William Barbee, Frank Dierker, George Jenner, W. Frazier, Mr. Floyd (orderly). My uncle would have had surname Harmon. Incidently, Mr. Harmon was from Albany, NY (others in the photo may have been from around the country). As a group photograph, the persons are not individually identified, they appear to be wearing uniforms, other large tents are seen in the background.
Any information about Ward A, Huntsville, Alabama would be appreciated. Thank you.

Joseph, Henry, Hugh BARCLAY -- ('The Barclay Story!')

Joseph Barclay and son Henry

Posted by T Barclay Pope on Tue, 25 Jul 2000

Surname: Barclay, Barkley

This is p 2 and 3 of a letter from Zora A Evans of LaMarque, TX found in the files of Geo W Barclay, Tyler Co. It was written July 27, 1994.
Briefly - The Barclay Story!
What I'm directly interestd in (Woodville/Nacogdoches, Tx), concerns Henry Brazelton Barclay (b 1814 Madison Co Al son of Joseph Barclay b. NC 1782, d after 1860, Jackson Co AL and Mary Leddbetter. I have found a source that says "Henry B came to Texas with his Uncle Walter (b 1774 Rowan Co NC), settling in Woodville." I have no proof that Walter was actually his uncle, but you know people aften used the terms "uncle," "cousin", et . to denote fmaily relationships but not necessarily as we define the terms (another source names Joseph as 'Cousin" to Hugh Barclay).

If Henry did come, indeed, then he must have returned to AL in 1839, he married Elizabeth Taylor in Madison Co they are on 1850 census in that County (haven't found them on 1840) and in Bastrop Co Tx on 1860 census. Elizabeth was a sister to Campbell Taylor who fought at San Jacinto.

One of the reasons I feel there truly is a connection is my recollection that Barclay reunions were held in Woodville (probably 40's and 50's) and my grandmother, Zora Barclay Outlaw, always received an invitation. Alben Barkley was supposed to attend one of these but, as I recall, was unable to at the last minute. My grandmother was born and lived much of her life in San Gabriel, Milam Co died in Taylor, Williamson TX)

Yes, I know about Mr Barclay's uncle - the town, Barclay, is still on the map but I don't know how much is left of the town - I may be mistaken but I think it is in either Milam or Bell county (nope! It's in Falls Co).

I would really like to meet Mr Barclay - he sounds like a most interesting person. And of course the fact that he was a teacher makes him even more special to me. Hope to beat the post man _ Will write more later.

Love, Zora

Joseph Barclay 1782 NC past 1860 AL and Mary "Polly" Ledbetter married 12 Apr 1810 Rhea Co TN
children Joel Ledbetter (1811 - 1870 Delethe Elkins, George R (1812 - Phyllis Stinett, William Franklin 1813-1893 Mary Maples, Mary Elkins, Henry Brazelton (1814 - 1890) Elizabeth Taylor, John 1815 - Eliz Darwin,Green Lee 1812 James G 1825 Malinda Gilbreath, Lydia 1820 - 1870, Archibald 1827, Margaret 1822

children of Henry Brazelton and Elizabeth Taylor; Cambell 1840 , Mary Jang 1842James Moore, Maargaret Caroling 1844 A J Lovelace, Joseph Clark 1845 Martha A Harris, James K.
Mrs. Porter's Store on Wells Street

When I was at Huntsville Junior High school in the late 1960s there was an old woman, Mrs. Porter, who ran a small store in what must have been the front of her house on Wells street near the intersection of Maple Hill drive, just across the street from the old section of Maple Hill Cemetery. When my father attended Huntsville High School in the late 1930s at that same school, he said she was running the store even then.

Does anyone on this list know anything about her? How long did she have her store? What happened to her?

William T. McBroom, d. 1873, Madison County

William T. McBroom is not listed in any census I can find in Alabama in 1860, but he married Susan Hunt (widow) there on Dec. 24, 1867, and lived in Madison County until his death in 1873.

Court documents from 1878 say William T. had a brother and sister who moved from Alabama years before, and both had already died, and no information could be learned baout the brother and sister.

I am thinking it's possible William T could be a brother to John M. McBroom.

If William T. shows up in anyone's genealogical records, I would appreciate hearing from you.

Read all we know about William T. here:
http://www.mcbroom.org/phpmyfamily/people.php?person=00089

WM F MOORE

Good evening-

Wondering if you could direct me to any other info on a WM F Moore? He was in Tallapoosa Co in (if my old memory serves me correctly)
in 1860 or 1870--
then relocated to Madison Co, AL, where he lived til he died.

I just noticed he was on a list you shared showing Civil War soldiers

said he applied for a pension in Mad Co.

Do you know where I could get a copy of that, or any other info on him or his military pension application?

His wife was Tabitha Ann or Bitha . (Unsure of last name)

He was my ggg grandfather. I've never been able to locate a death certificate, though I know he is buried here in Madi Co Al (on the TN state line
bordering Lincoln Co, TN). I've seen his headstone--it's in a tiny cemetary but his wife is no where to be found..

Family lore says he fought in the Civil War and could read and write

It atonished me a few months ago when I found him (by accident) in Tallapoosa Co with his wife and kids.

I'd been looking in North Alabama for year and family lore also said he came from Greene Co, GA - but with the common name of Wm Moore
have had no luck.

Anyway,
would appreciate any and all info you could share.

Thanks in advance!

Monica Holder Askew

I have copies of letters from Joseph Rice, in New Market, to his sister-in-law, Sarah Bayles Jackson, in Coldwater, MS, written in 1877. Sarah, my g-g-g-grandmother was born in 1799 and married W. Jackson in 1821. Her father, Hezikiah, was born in Maryland, but I don't know where Sarah was born.
I'm interested in the years that the Bayles family spent in New Market.

In June I will be visiting in Tullahoma, TN, and thought I would come to the Huntsville area to gather information. Where should I start? Huntsville library? Would appreciate information on how to go about this. Three of the Rice brothers married Bayles daughters; do y'all know anything about these faimilies?

Thanks,

Sylvia

Looking for anyone who can help me w/the following info:

Littleberry Crockett Massey m. Mary Lou Cambell
had son, Thomas Jefferson b. 1905 in Meridianville, AL (Madison Co.). If anyone can access a census for AL for 1900 or 1910 and can find this family on it...I would be so grateful. I am actually trying to verify if Littleberry was the actual given name of Thomas' father. Thank you.

Jennifer
HENRY WHITE (born abt 1855) KERON H. WHITE (born abt 1860)

I am looking for anyone that can give me some information on Henry & Keron White. I have located them in 1880 Census Madison County AL, married with 2 kids (Mary A. & William H.) Then I seen Keron listed as a widow in the 1900 Jackson, Larkinsville, AL Census, with six living children, Mary A., Eliza A., Minnie L., Franklin, Walter M. & Nettie M. I then found Keron in 1910 in Arkansas remarried to Green Branum. Census stated that Green Branum was from AL.

I think their child FRANKLIN could be my grandfather, Thomas Franklin White.

Anyone with info, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Jan
I would like to hear from anyone who knows anything about John Cobb, born in 1802 in North Carolina. He lived most of his life and died in Madison County, Alabama in 1872. I believe he was married two times, first to Linna Lanier aka Liney C. and second to Emily Hearn(?) John Cobb's father may have been Stephen Cobb. John Cobb's son was Adams Cobb born in 1832 in Madison Co., Alabama.
James Elgin McKinney born c1813 TN along with his wife Mary Ann Clark born c1816 AL and their children Elizabeth, John H, William J and Thomas A were on the 1850 Madison County census. Nearby are several other McKinney/McKeney/McKiney etc families with similar names, places of birth, etc. Does anyone know how these families are related. Is Thomas born c1782 VA James' father? Also, is the William McDowell who is mentioned with John Timmons and John Simpson on documents of the guardianship of John Taylor's son the same as William McDowell (wife Jane) who moves to Wayne County, Missouri (Jane moves on to Ripley County, MO, after William dies c1855)? Anyone who can shed light on the McKinney, McDowell or Clarks of this area, please write.
