So glad to know the Church still stands and would love to take a trip to view their old records...I am searching to see if the Gordon's you mentioned could be related to mine. What are the chances of Dr. Gordon's in same place and not related. Hope to find the connection soon.
Thanks for your reply

Yes, the episcopal Church in Marion is still standing and in use. It is a beautiful church. I grew up next door to a Dr. Gordon, who died when I was a child. I don't remember his first name but I do remember his son, Col. Samuel Gordon and his sister, Lois Gordon. I also remember Miss Lois Hendon, who was Dr. Gordon's sister in law. Miss Lois, as I called her was my best buddy, growing up. I noticed the Gordon in your name and I am assuming that this was your family which it may not be. Please contact me if this is your family. Lynda Holifield Kendrick

Both the John Cunningham and Margaret Cunningham Morgan should be children of William Cunningham and Martha Dorroh Cunningham. My line is from their sibling, William C. Cunningham. I, too, have seen references that John Cunningham was a county clerk - 1847 court proceedings mentioned in South Carolina Magazine of Ancestral Research, vol. 19, spring 1991, No. 2.

Looking for information on Inez Carter. I do not know much. I do know she is the "adopted" daughter of George Washington Carter (1887-1952) who is listed as living in Oldtown, Perry County, Alabama, on the 1930 Census. He is actually listed as GW Carter. His wife was Elsie Carter. From what I understand, she passed away in Florida - possibly Miami. I do not have any dates other than she was born abt. 1922.

Birth: Dec. 13, 1924
Death: Jun. 11, 2011

The Daily Local News, West Chester, Chester County, Pa
Wednesday, June 15, 2011

Edythe S. Bagley
Edythe Scott Bagley, 86, of Cheyney, Pa passed away on Saturday, June 11. 2011 at her home.
She was born and grew up in Marion, Alabama, the daughter of Obie Scott and Bernice McMurry Scott.
She was the eldest surviving child of three, including her sister Coretta and her brother Obie Leonard.
She attended Crossroads School and Lincoln School.
Upon graduation as valedictorian of her class, she received a scholarship to Antioch College in Yellow Springs, Ohio, becoming Antioch's first full-time African American student in modern times.
Her Antioch experience was so enriching that it broadened her horizons and enticed her younger sister, Coretta, to enroll two years later.
At Antioch she participated in the school's renowned co-operative education program, and among her co-op experiences was a day spent with novelist Richard Wright. After receiving her bachelor's degree from the Ohio State University, Mrs. Bagley returned to the South.
While teaching high school English in Talladega, Alabama,
she pursued graduate studies at Columbia University and earned a master's degree in English.
She then taught and directed plays at Elizabeth City State Teachers College, where she met Arthur M. Bagley, whom she married on June 5, 1954.
She later taught at Albany State College, North Carolina A&T University, and Norfolk State University.
After returning to graduate school she earned a terminal
master of fine arts degree in Theater from Boston University, becoming, in 1965, the first African American woman to do so.
Following the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., she worked full-time with her sister, Coretta Scott King, for two years.
Mrs. Bagley served as a consultant in developing a major in Black Drama at Michigan State University from 1970-1972. From 1971 through 1996, she was a professor at Cheyney University of Pennsylvania; due to her leadership, Pennsylvania's Department of Education approved Cheyney's proposal to offer a theatre arts major in 1980 and the university completed the construction of a modern theatre arts facility in 1996.
In addition to teaching, Mrs. Bagley directed the student repertory group, the Cheyney Players, and directed many major productions from both classical and modern dramatic literature.
Mrs. Bagley was involved in implementing the cultural affairs component of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change and was a lifetime member of the its board of directors.
Mrs. Bagley and her sister were among thirty-seven sets of sisters featured in the New York Times best-selling book Sisters, published by Running Press in 1994.
A member of St. Paul's Baptist Church in West Chester, Mrs. Bagley also belonged to several national organizations including the American Association of University Women, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the National Council of Negro Women, and the Links, Incorporated.
She was also an honorary member of the Alpha Psi Omega Dramatic Honorary Fraternity.
Mrs. Bagley's husband, Dr. Arthur M. Bagley, was a professor and chair of the Industrial Arts and Technology Department at Cheyney.
She is survived by her son, Arturo S. Bagley, of Cheyney, her brother, Rev. Obie Leonard Scott and his wife Alberta, of Greensboro, Alabama.
Funeral services will be held Friday, June 17, 2011 at 1 p.m. at the Milestone Events Center, LLC of DeBaptiste Funeral Homes, Inc., 600 East Market Street, West Chester, PA. Friends may greet the family from 12 Noon to 1 p.m. prior to
the service.
Interment will be in the family cemetery in Marion, Alabama.

Burial:
Mount Tabor AME Zion Church Cemetery
Perry County
Alabama, USA

DESERT ROSE: THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF CORETTA SCOTT KING
By Edythe Scott Bagley with Joe Hilley
Published by University of Alabama Press

Edythe Bagley was the second-oldest child of four siblings who included Eunice, Coretta and Obie Leonard, all born in Perry County, Alabama. Their father, Obie Scott, was a self-motivated entrepreneur who distributed logs and lumber to various sawmills in the South. Their mother, Bernice McMurry, was a woman knowledgeable in various trades, such as transportation and barbering, and she served as an active member of her church choir.
Bagley writes, “We grew up in an atmosphere in which the standard for achievement was one’s own potential rather than some other person’s accomplishments.

Author
Activist
Educator

Matilda Wood married Reason Dobbins about 1837 in Perry County. I believe Matilda died about 1842 when their daughter was born. They had one child, Amanda Jane Dobbins who was living with her Dobbins grandparents in 1850. In 1840 there were two Wood families--E.H. and Andrew. Is anyone familiar with either of these Wood families?
Ruth Dobbins Bennett

Brown.

I've just found them in Cherokee County 1850 Census (marriage 1847), and the little Belvins, and because I'm looking for both families back in AL and GA, I wonder if you pursued them? Did you ever discover if the Belvins were relations, or just neighbors? I havent seen the two girls after they married young--did they become fellow-travellers of the Campbells or Browns?

Their story interests me and I would be happy to share information.

Jake E. Arnold

My grandmother was Irene E. Arnold Smith. In going thru some of her things, I found some addresses of persons she had communicated with in years past. She had passed away in the early 80's so unable to ask her questions. I know her two brothers and her would visit cousins and family in the Marion area. One of the names she had in her address book was Jake Arnold. I found a Jake E. Arnold that is buried in the Averett/Barnett Cemetery in 1962. His birth was in 1876. I am trying to find out more information about this Jake Arnold and his family hoping it will help close a hole we have in our genealogy. Can someone help me in Perry County? I would be glad to prepay for some research. My mother is 90 and I would like to find more out about her family before she leaves this earth. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

I am not sure what you are interested in knowing. I can tell you that after participating in many of the Virginia battles that we all studied in history, he rcieved an Artillery shell wound during the battle Battle of Sharpsburg, Md. on Sept 17, 1862. He was a Captain of Company K of the 8th Ala Infantry, known as the Southern Guards from May 1861 until Nov. 2 1864, when he was promoted to Maj. when Col. Young Lea Royston was forced to retire due to battle wounds. During the Battle of the Wilderness in Virginia, on May 6th, 1864, Duke Nall was seriously injured when he was shot through the lung. He eventually recovered and rejoined his company. They were on the outskirts of Augusta, Georgia, that winter when Duke Nall developed phneumonia as a result of that lung injury and died on the 7th of Feb., 1865. He is buried in the Confederate section of Magnolia Cemetery in Augusta, Georgia. If you are a relative and interested in contacting me, I have a picture of Duke Nall in his uniform and I have a picture of his burial site in Georgia.

Lynda
According to Duke Nall's compiled military records found on Fold3.com, a large military records archive, Major D Nall of the Alabama 8th Infantry, Co K signed his own payroll receipt on January 26th 1865, paid by a Captain G. A. B....?. This record states Nall was made a Major on or by November 2nd 1864 and that prior to the Jan 1865 date, his last pay was on October 31, 1864 received from a Captain A J Stone. (This is document #97 of 99 total in his compiled service records. The majority of these records are requisitions for supplies signed by Capt Nall.)

Any thoughts or comments on this particular document?

Thank you for posting the 1826 Estate sale of Aaron Moore, Sr. of Perry County, Alabama.

I know that there was an Aaron Moore, Sr., as indicated in the "Estate of Aaron Moore" and an Aaron Moore, Jr., who both lived in Perry County, Alabama. Please could anyone tell me if Aaron Moore, Jr. is the same Aaron Moore, apparently a widower but unsure, who married the widowed Elizabeth Prestridge in 1842 in Perry County, Alabama?

As the widowed Elizabeth Prestridge was in her mid 40s at the time of marriage in 1842, I doubt that the marriage of Aaron Moore and Elizabeth Prestridge produced any children from the Moore-Prestridge marriage of 1842 in Perry County, Alabama.

Does anyone know about this marriage, or if anyone knows anything about whom the Aaron Moore was who married the widowed Elizabeth Prestridge in 1842 in Perry County, Alabama, please contact me. Thank you.

There was no relationship that I have found between the Nalls and Dukes and I know this because my husband is related to Duke Nall and I am related to the Dukes. I paid close attention to the Perry County families to make sure that my husband and I were not cousins. Actually Duke Nall's name was Ducalion and Duke was just a nickname that he acquired.

My 5th great grandfather was Thomas Duke b. 1765 in Kershaw, Lancaster, S.C. His daughter, Mary Ann
Duke b. 1784 m. Jesse Jasper Horne (my 4th great grandparents)and they came to Perry County after they were married and were among some of the earliest settlers. I suspect that you and I are related some way.

Lynda

I also have seen the name Duke Nall often. My family Surname is DUKE and have wondered if Duke NALL was related or their family was close. My DUKE family were also farmers in Perry County and land.

Do you have information on Whom he rode to VA with to sign up for the war? I've been researching what seems like forever for my Thomas J Duke. Several of his cousins ended up in the 27th Georgia Volunteer Infantry Army of Tennesee CSA - But they were all in VA for some time.

I see. Well thanks for the information. I really appreciate it because it will save me a couple steps. Batice is kinda easy to spot I suppose because he has a very unique name. :-)

Caroline was my grandmother's grandmother. The line goes from Caroline and Batice like so: Caroline -> Carrie Swain (who married Fredrick Buchanan) -> Carrie Swain, Jr (my great-grandmother) who had Ellen Buchanan (my dad's mom). So, I believe that makes her my great-great-great-grandmother. So it's nice to "e-meet" ya lol.

I'm really not sure about Caroline's parents; that's why I'm ordering the death certificate for Percy. I figured the person who gave the information probably knew him. If I had the maiden name, then I would try to place her on a census with that name and get her parents that way. But with the marriage record that you have, I'm pretty sure she's gonna be Carolina Hurt. Batice is a very different name. Through a Google search or just a search on here, no one else has that name (that I've seen anyway).

That's an interesting development with the Hurts being on the same Census in 1880. From what I've noticed, people lived in the same neighborhood with relatives most times. That's super cool!

Now I wonder who the Thomas Sheppard kid belonged to. Maybe he was the child of one of Batice's sisters or Caroline's sister. I'm gonna have to check this out now!

Nice to also meet you. Were Caroline's parents Moses & Nancy Hurt? I have this information but I'm not sure where I got it. On the 1880 census, page 24 the same page with Batice and Caroline listed, there is a Peter and Sallie Craig with mother Nancy Hurt, age 50 in the household. Did Caroline have a younger sister named Sallie?

I believe Caroline's maiden name is Hurt. I found a marriage license for Batice Swayne and Caroline Hurt dated Feb. 6, 1874 in Perry County, AL.

Also, on the 1930 census for Cleveland, OH Caroline is living with Daisy and Sara (Sallie) Fields. Caroline died in 1932.

I am not researching the entire SWAIN family but have Batice and Caroline on my tree as the parents of Sallie and Louise because of their marriage to my FIELDS relative. Also, I think their son Leodis's wife Hannah is on my tree as Hannah married my grandfather Elihu Brooks after Leodis died.

How are you related to the Swain family?
Oh wow! That's interesting! Caroline is my g-g-g-grandmother. I'm on a super search for Caroline's maiden name. Do you know what it is? My strategy is to order Percy Swain's death certificate from Montgomery to see if her maiden name is on it. But I found her on the 1920 with her nephew Thomas Sheppard. Thomas lived with his parents down the street in 1910. I can't place Caroline and her sister Francis (Thomas' mother) on the Census together because of the huge gap in their ages. Caroline was already out and married.

Since the original post in 2004 I have learned the township of Cunningham was missed in 1870 census. Not sure of the reason but no census records were taken. This has been confirmed by C. Marie Taylor, A.G. of the Family History Library at Salt Lake City, UT.

I have Batice and Caroline Swain on my family tree. Two of their daughters, Sally and Louise Swain married two brothers Daisy and Woodie Fields who are my great-uncles.

CL Steele

I'm having this issue with the Swain family. I found them on the 1880 but can't find them on the 1870 because I'm having a time sorting through those "ranges" and such. So I've resorted to a page-by-page strategy. I'm looking for Balease/Batiece/Blease Swain. He married a woman named Caroline. They were mulattos.
