Dr. William Hughes (Hughs), abt 1809-1867, & Family

I am researching the Hughes family in Pickens County and would appreciate any information from descendants in the area. My ggg grandfather was Dr. William Hughes, b. abt 1809 and died 1867, a physician in Pickens and Greene counties. I am most interested in his daughter, Addie, my gg grandmother who was born abt 1845 and married James Gibson and then a Kennedy from Pickens Co. I have a family album which belonged to her and would love to identify some of the people in the album - and also share with others interested. I'm also looking for Addie Hughes Kennedy's death date and place of burial. Addie's brothers and sisters were Thomas, Mary Ann E., Newton R., and Richard C., all of whom I am trying to accumulate information on. Richard and Newton served in the Civil War. Any help would be appreciated.
Susan Holman
sholman@gulftel.com
Oh Lord! My head is spinning, because my great grandmother was a Spann, Quantillia Spann. LOL My great grandmother had a child by Fed Dancy, but they weren't never married. She was very young when she give birth to my grandmother, Minnie Dancy. Minnie was raised by her grandparents, Abram and Josephine Spann in Noxubee County, MS. Talking about a small world.
So, how are you related to the Dancys?
I have not come across any slaves named Florence and it would be impossible to find a name to go with Dr. Dancy this far out from that history, unless you had someone who was carrying around an oral history of that imformation. Everyone in Dancy, and surrounding areas knew each other.
When I talked to my cousin Ezell Dancy--whose grandfather was Lorenzo, he remembered bits and pieces of history since he grew up in Dancy. He said that after Dr. Dancy died the Klan taunted a lot of Dancys saying that they no longer had protecttion from Dr. Dancy. Also Ezell said that Dr. Dancy has so many children that when ever he went to check on someone they usually ended up having a baby. These are some stories.
Peacolia Barge is my aunt. Her father was Robert Dancy who was the son of Lorenzo. Lorenzo was not however married to my grandfather's mother. I believe Lorenzo had quite a few children as well. Most of the Dancy line that I know of comes from Dancy, Alabama. My grandfather left Dancy and never really returned much. My aunt said that when they were little a lot of his brothers, nephews used to visit them in Bessemer and they looked white. My grandmother didn't like to visit Dancy because there were too many fair black people there and she was not comfortable with that, again, this is my family story.
I don't know any of the names you mentioned. There are a lot of Dancy's in East St. Louis. And they are connected to Spanns, They are your relatives.
Also, some of the Dancy's had the name and some were descended from Dr. Dancy.
Deborah

I came across this website, an interview of Mrs Peacolia Barge and in this interview she said, Lorenzo Dancy was her great grandfather. Check this out.http://library.thinkquest.org/12111/mculley.html?tqskip1=1&a...
She doesn't give her father's name, but only that Lorenzo Dancy was her great grandfather.

Hey,
I'm glad to hear you. Someone told me that Dr, Edwin Dancy had children by two slave women, but I wasn't told the names of the women. One researcher told me the mother's name was Florence. I have came across people that know and knew of the Dancys of East St. Louis, but I don't know how to contact them. I live in St. Louis, across the river and never knew I have relatives in East St. Louis.
My father didn't talk about his mother family until I started my search. My grandmother, Minnie Dancy's father was Fed Dancy. His father was Will Dancy, one of Lorenzo's sons. My father has very little information on the Dancy. He did know Tommy,Nutty, Steve, Bennie, and Arell(not sure of spelling).
Do you know Nutty? I don't know his real name, but the last time I was in Shuqualak(2002),he was livIng and I was told he probably can give you some info.
My father just told me that Tommy and Bennie were brothers. Their father's name was Jess Dancy. Nutty and Steve were brothers. Nutty was the oldest of the two.
I would like to see what you have the Dancy and thank you.
I don't know if you have ever used Find a Grave, but I have found it to be very helpful.
If you know the state he was possible buried in, you can narrow down the cemetery. I have found the tombstones of several people I needed dates on. This was due to the generous volunteers who donated their time to photograph and record dates in area cemeteries.
Also, the general web for different states also has listings for cemeteries.
It was a suggestion that was passed on to me that has been very helpful.
Mary Hughes Butler
Hi Jean,

Yes, I remember you, that is going to impossible to find out I think. Dr. Dancy had so many sons, and I don't know is they were with the same woman. I interviewed a cousin, actually he was Lorenzo Dancy's grandson- Ezell Dancy, whose father was Henry Dancy. Ezell grew up in Dancy and remembered Lorenzo looking like a white man. He had no memory of Dr. Dancy and know no knowlege of who fathered his grandfather Lorenzo. I have the name of several slave women that came with Dr. Dancy and his family from N.C to Mississippi and then to Alabama, but trying to connect one to him....well that's anyone's guess.
There were a lot of Dancy's in the East St. Louis area and still are, but they are much removed from that old generation and the really old ones are gone now. They were alive when I started doing this years ago, but I could never get in touch with them except through a few people. There is a family legion about a photgraph of all the Dancy brothers probably taken at the turn of the century. Maybe someone on your message link thread has heard of this.
Have you found anyone that has given you good information? I can copy some of may things and send them to you.

Deborah

Hello,
How are you? I don't know if you remember, but I spoke to you before from the website, dancy.net. Yes, I am still researching Dr. Edwin C. Dancy. I have a Dancy family tree on Ancestry.com and made many connections. I found out that Lorenzo is my 3rd great grandfather and this makes Dr. Edwin C. Dancy, my fourth great grandfather. My one question who was the mother of Dr. Edwin C. Dancy children?
Nice hearing from you.
Hi - It's been nearly 5 years since the last post here, but am wondering about the grave of Capt R Stewart, b 1829, died 6/6/1862 in KY. I think this may be my gg grandfather, only he was a McCord, married to Margaret Wier. He died June 6, 1862, in KY. If anyone could verify that this person does indeed have "Wier/Weir" on the tombstone, I would appreciate it very much. (I'm in Missouri). My ancestors name was Robert A McCord, but he did have a son named Robert Stewart McCord. (This would not be the son, he was born in 1858).

Thanks!
Connie

My G-Grandfather's brother married a lady named Mamie Welch who the family say came from Pickens Co., Alabama. She was born in 1894. She married J.D. Baker in about 1915 and moved to Phenix City, Alabama.

Mamie Baker died in July, 1975, in Opelika, Alabama. Her obituary lists four sisters: Maggie, Annie, Clara, and a fourth sister, not named.

I am looking to find who the parents were for Mamie Welch and her four sisters. Can you help me please? Thanks.

Charles

So you are the distant cousin that Bill said he was going to see in the spring. I had dinner with Bill and his wife in March while we were staying at a state park on Lake Texcoma. I have no information of my gr-grandmother Ringo or her parents, my gr-gr-grandparents. My grandfather's mother died in childbirth or shortly after his birth. That's when her cousin came to help gr-grandfather Peter's with his care and than married him shortly after. This is Bill's side of the family.

This information about this family is really a brick wall for me.

Any information you find that can assist me will be appreciated.

Shelia

Do you have any old pictures, obituary, info of Elenore's parents. I trying to find out where Abraham and Sarah are buried. I was hoping your GGgrandmother might have an old photo of a cemetery that has small stones and near 2 large oak trees, possibly being the Ringo Family Cemetery in Red River County,TX. I take care of this cemetery. Wm K Barnard reestablished this cemetery after it was bulldozed back in 1960s. There is now a Texas Historical marker for the Cemetery and Ferry that Peter Ringo Family operated. Any information might be helpful. Thank you.
C.M. Ringo

The 1850 Pickens Census list David 44 with wife Betsy A 43/45 with two children Caroline 21 and Russ 1. Did Caroline marry in Pickens County? Could she have married a Goodwin or a Gates? Also, what happened to Russ. I believe David & Betsy A. are listed in Franklin County Census in 1860 but Caroline and Russ are not with them. There are two other children Mary J. and Samuel age 12 now living in the household. Did this family have other relatives and possibly other children in Pickens County?
The Heritage of Pickens County has a W. W. Welch as Assistant Superintendent of Behlehem Baptist Church in 1860 (pg. 60)

W. W. Welch was also member of the Masonic Lode of 1860. (p. 76)

Evaline Coleman married William W. Welch. Evaline's parents were Jesse Coleman and Faithy Elizabeth (Jordan?). Jesse was born in Virginia, went to Abberville Co., SC, to GA, then to Coosa Co., AL. William was born in GA. (p 135)

Minnie Hydrick, daughter of Frank Hydrick and Felicia Cooper, married Columbus Welch. (p. 210.)

I'll add more later if this of any help.

Yes, these are all mine. Some of the dates are a little off but that is par for the course with these census from way back. As for the kids born before they got married, somebody else got the dates wrong obviously. After I went through and made adjustments they are OK. JD & Fannie's first child, William, was born 1874 or so and died in 1875. I didn't see anything on their one son, Alexander "Jack" Crawford in any of these census. He would have been born between 1880-86. I think I can get an obit for him from the Historical Society in Brockway. They have an obit list that says Jack died in 1934.

Thank you so much for all of your help. If you find any other things you think may be important, please let me know. Otherwise, I'll just let this go for now. Maybe the other cousins doing research will find JD's parents' names.

I'm thinking these censuses are the correct people. My assumptions are that Wm. T. is the step-father and Wm. O. is the step brother of JD. (Both WT & WO buried in Union Chapel - dates seem correct.) I also assume that JD's father died before 1850 when the first census shows the children. I'm also assuming that Eugenia is JD's blood sister since in the second census her last name is Crawford. However, I'm unsure who Henry Lee Crawford belongs to since he is only 3 mo. old. (Possibly Eugenia or another of JD's siblings.) Can you find anything in 1840 census for Crawfords with Eugenia which may give an indication of JD's parents? (JD wasn't born until Aug 1840 so I assume he would not have been born when 1840 census was taken.) However Eugenia is older so she should show up if that year is available.

This information certainly gives one something to think about. It looks like Wm. O. Kelsey (who may have been the step brother to JD Crawford) married a widow by the name of Williams. According to JD's obit, the step brother stayed in Alabama. If this marriage is WOK, then this proves to be true. JD died in 1922 in PA.

As for JD's civil war pension app, I do not have an ancestry sub so I'm not able to look these things up. I imagine he applied in PA and used his wife to vouch for him. I can't say.

As for a pension, I don't know if he received one or not since he was only with the Union side a week (according to his discharge paper.) I doubt he would try to get one from the Confederate side (if they even had pensions available) since they may come and arrest him as a deserter!

Naturally, this would have to be difficult from 1840 on back. I HATE THOSE CENSUS! I will have to study the state lines, county lines, etc. As for how the "Yankee" explained his Southern drawl, family lore says he was foraging for food in the winter and was kicking over frozen cabbages in a field when he kicked one which was actually a man's skull! He then deserted the Confederate army and went north where he joined the Union army so he wouldn't be a prisoner of war. Some of our cousins were just in Gettysburg and found muster rolls with James D Crawfords on both sides. They said that sometimes if a person deserted, their name was taken off the rolls and they were presumed dead. Other times it remained and they were listed as MIA, KIA, POW or deserter. Of course, there wasn't anything relating to his age on these rolls so it was hard to tell which JD might have been him. We have his actual Civil War discharge paper. It is so yellow and tattered but it is readable and it says he was enrolled June 23, 1865 and discharged June 30, 1865 at Philadelphia. It says he was born in NY, is 25 yrs. old, and it goes on to give a physical description (height, eyes, hair, skin, etc.) He was with Co. A, PA Heavy Artillery.

Looking for parents of James David Crawford, b. 24 Aug 1840, Pickens County, d. 19 Nov 1922 Pennsylvania. I have his obit from PA but it doesn't state anything about parents. Family lore says his father was a doctor in Alabama. James' obit says he is survived by a half brother, William Kelsey. Does anyone have Kelsey/Crawford in their line that could possibly help me?

a story handed down from my grandmother is that Josiah Tilly, the 1st white settler in Pickens County, was an ancestor of my grandmother, Eula Tilley Parker.
I have read everything I can find on Josiah, but can't find a name for his wife he married in Tuscaloosa. Nor names for any children they may have had?
I have an old high school report I had written when Mamaw was still alive, that said that there was a newspaper article written about this , and the clipping was in the possession of my Great Aunt Grace Tilley,I don't know who inherited her things, and haven't been able to get any calls returned.
Nor have I located the article, although granted time has been short and I have not been able to search like I would want!
does anyone have any further info? Quite a Big Deal was made of this, so I would like to find the connection!
Thanks !

Hello, in a very dated message on the message boards you mentioned of an ancestor named Maggie Atchinson. Was there also a Bertie Atchinson? Why I'm asking I have a very old photo that was given to my by a great aunt, who was blind in the late '60s. I have a picture that on the back reads Bertie Atchinson and Maggie. I do not have any idea if they are distant relatives of mine or night. My Erwin - Sanford families were from AL. My branch moved to TX and AR. in the late 1800's.

If you ahve a Bertie and a Maggie Atchinson in your ancestry than email me a message with your email and I'll email you a copy of the photo front and back.

Regards,

Shelia W.

would that i could find eugenia in 1840-,life should be so simple! but all census prev to 1850 run like this-name of head of household, then columns-#of males in the house under 5, # 5-9, # 10-14, 14-, etc, no names. same for females. i, as you do, believe that wm t is the stepfather. as such, he prob was not married into this family much before 1850 as indicated by the birth of his so, wm kelsey. so whose name would i look for in 1840? crawford, head of household? alabama or south carolina? was james father head of household, or were they living, perhaps with one of james grandparents? there are 60 crawford heads of house in s c in 1840, and a good numder of johns and james,3 davids, 2 "e crawfords" etc. there is a john crawford in pickens district, pickens co, s.c. he has in his house, not nesc related, just living with him, one male age between 10-14, one age between 15-19, one male 40-49 . females 1, age 15-19. so u have to do this until u get one u think might fit, and try to find info. maybe u pick the correct one, maybe not. u try again. 52 pickens in 1840 alabama, only one in pickens co-if they were even ther. now u have to do some research as to how the state boundries may have changed between 1840, 1870, to see if yes, some were born sc, but then it may have become alabama-that the state lines moved (or didnt) but the people stayed in the same town.
yes, henry lee is an interesting ad on, isnt he. i cant find him in future census, but i am still looking.
why do u think james david started out with the confederates and changed to the union? wonder how the "yankee" explained his southern drawl. at your local genealogy library, u can prob access footnote.com. i dont have it, but our library does, but i couldnt get there until tues, if then. go there and u will see (sort of, u have to pay to be able to really read it, ) 2 james d crawfords, 1 abt age 22,1 age 19, who signed up in 1863 -alabama cavalry, union muster rolls, from nara in d.c.
what do james discharge papers say exactly. when and where he enlisted? when and where he wa discharged? form infantry? cavalry? and where did u get the paers. also, i could be wrong, but i think he'd need more than his wifes tetimony to get a pension, she didnt even know him then.

Carden/Cardin Family (Jordan) Alabama

I am researching this information for my cousin - her mother's side of the family. She is from the Jordan Carden line, through his son Vardy and Vardy's son M. V. Carden. I have learned alot about them in Mississippi (Vardy and son M.V.) but need some more to complete the picture. Any one with info on Jordan, Vardy and M.V. Carden would be much appreciated. Especially pictures anyone might have of any of this line (brother's, sister's, uncle's doesn't matter) my cousin has no pictures of this side of the family, at all. Thank you, Betty

Re: Thomas Jefferson Cohen 1840 Pickens County, Alabama

Thomas Jefferson Cohen is the son of Jemima Cohen, on the 1840 Spartanburg Co., SC census. Jemima wasn't married and is the daughter of Joseph and Rachel Cowen, on the 1790 and 1800 Union Co., SC census. (My ancestors). A brother to Jemima was Thomas Cohen. You will see the name spelled Cowen, Coan, Cohen, etc. They were illiterate and the census enumerator spelled it however he wanted each time.
This is my grandmother's family and she said they were Jewish, so the spelling should be Cohen. It is possible that they came from Maryland after the Revolution. I have been to Union and found land records for Joseph and Rachel, where the children, Thomas and Jemima, signed their portions to sell after Joseph's death. Joanne Brown

Thank you. I wonder if this could be another child of Joseph W. Welch. I do know that the sons of Joseph W. Welch that I know about -- Thomas Columbus Welch (my g-grandfather) and his brother, Joseph Powell Welch -- were staunch Masons. Many of the men in the family had the Masonic emblem on their tombstones. Joseph was in Georgia before Alabama -- there must be some connection. I'll study on this a while. Again, thank you.

My great-great-grandfather was Joseph W. Welch, who came to Pickens County in 1840. His wife was Elizabeth, and her last name was possibly Risener. He died in Pickens County in 1857. A Nicholas Welch, born in 1825 in Georgia, died in 1850 in Pickens County, and I believe that may have been his son. I am looking for any information about him. I know for sure that three of his children came with him to Alabama: Joseph Powell, Thomas Columbus (my g-grandfather), and Mary E. I would like to know the names of his other children, what his middle name was, and who his father was.
