I have hit a brick wall and am in need of help. I am looking for the birth place of Capt. James Parker of Livingston, AL [Sumter Co.], b. 1788, d. 1855. His wife was Mary W. Parker [Winston], b. 1804, d. 1848, and he had eleven children. In order as listed in his estate they are:
Socrates "Soc" Parker, b. 1820, d. 1881
Mary Amaranth Parker Brown Killen, b. 1822, d. 1851
Marcus "Mark" Parker, b. 1824, d. 1890
Arborette Parker Campbell, b. Dec.of 1824 ca., d. ??
Conazine "Con" Parker, b. ???, d.1861
Annie Amazon Parker Brown May, b. ???, d. ???
James Volney Parker, b. 1834, d. 1860
David Crockett "Dave" Parker, b. 1836, d. 1868
Adaman W. Parker, b. 1838, d. 1847
Osceola Parker, b. 1841, d. 1842
Philander "Phi" W. Parker, b. 1847, d. ???

I have a copy of Capt. James Parker's obituary which indicates he arrived to Sumter Co., in December of 1831but does not say from where. I have also actively searched military records to verify the title of "captain" to which he is referred in many documents but have been unsuccessful in making a connection. He was the owner of a large plantation outside Livingston on Emelle Road.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Dear Bill, no one answered my query. I know one line from Thomas Matthews Jr.that a descendent sent me, F.C. Jones. A son named James. There is so much info on the Matthews family at Raleigh. Also written up in books. I got most of my info from W.C.Fields' books. Do you know if your line migrated to Sumter Co. ? My James McDonald who married Sara Matthews was in Jefferson Co. Ga. when he died in 1810. Sara had died in 1799, possibly Lancaster Co. S.C. Sincerely, Ruth M. Scruggs

William married Elizabeth Jane Bledsoe in 1847 in Sumter county, Alabama and were living in Newton county, Mississippi in 1860. Many members of the Hammonds family left Sumter county and moved to Newton county in the 1850's. William and Jane had three daughters: Henrietta, Georgianna, and Mary. Thanks for all leads.

Wanting to determine the parents of Joseph W. & Mattie G. STANTON, who were living in the Edward N. & Bettie G. (Little) KRING household in Gainesville, Sumter Co., AL, in the 1880 census. Joseph was 19 (born about 1861), Mattie was 17 (born about 1863). They were probably siblings. They were enumerated as nephew and niece of Edward & Bettie (Little) KRING. Also living in the household was Matilda M. GILL, grandmother of Bettie G. (Little) KRING.

Bettie G. LITTLE was the daughter of J. J. LITTLE, b. NC, migrated to Warsaw - Livingston, Sumter Co., AL. I would guess that one of Bettie's sisters married a STANTON.

Can anyone identify these folks? All help appreciated. I cannot connect with any other STANTON names at this time. I'm looking for the parents and siblings of Joseph H. & Mattie G. STANTON.

Catherine Caroline Wilson b. 1833 - parents John H. Wilson/Sarah Denmark

Hello Denmark Researchers -
I have an orphan I am trying to place in one of the DENMARK families I am finding in census records, and other postings on the internet.
My relative is as follows:
Catherine Caroline Wilson(1833-1914),widow of Fielding Turner. Her death record: Died in Mobile, Mobile, Alabama, on 10 June 1914. The recorder or informant lists her father as John H. Wilson born Scotland, and her mother as Caroline Denmark who was born in Alabama.
I find a census record for John H. Wilson and wife Sarah in 1850 Caddo Parish, Louisiana. This is the county in which Fielding Turner and Caroline Wilson were married on 14 March 1850. The Turner family moved to Mobile.
The John H. Wilson family can be found again in 1860 census of Caddo Parish, Louisiana....John H. Wilson age 65 birth 1795 in Georgia, occupation Waggoner with his wife Sallie age 50 b. 1810 in Georgia and son Bailey Wilson age 16 born SC.
Also in records for Sumter County, Alabama Vol. 164, Sumter County compiled by Pauline Jones Ganrud.
There appear the following notices:
I am sure my Sarah Denmark b. about 1810 in Alabama fits into one of the many DENMARK families connected to the above people.
I welcome any inquiries. Willing to share information, I have found in census, marriage and on-line message boards.
I have been to Mobile and to the cemetery there, and have documents and photos.
Help put my orphan Sarah Denmark b. 1810 with her parents!
Thank you.

Leslie Pierce Royce
lfroyce@comcast.net

Does anyone have any info in regards as to Joseph Peter Hancock born 1830, SC and wife Elizabeth born 1815 in North Carolina, showing 1880 Census, Belmont area. Showing 7 sons: Andrew, Hillary, Thomas, William (Billie), George, Joseph P. & Frank. After 1880, can only locate one son remaining, Joseph P. & wife Eunice. Have been able to track Joseph P. & Eunice, with no problems. However, nothing as to the other sons. Any clues out there as to what happened to this family? Had thought Andrew was the Jefferson Co., AL; however according to info supplied to me and complied with the help of a Mary Ann Miller and Bob Binstein, this is not my Andrew. Any help would be so much appreciated. Will exchange what I have. You may contact me direct, at sandlapperh@peoplepc.com, if you like.

LABAN (Labern, Labon) RUSHING

Is there ANYONE who can verify the names of the children of WILLIAM RUSHING and ELIZABETH JANE TILGHMAN/TILLMAN? They married in 1801 in Bulloch Co., Ga., and she died about 1806 according to online info. No one ever says WHERE she died, but if he is the same William Rushing who married again to a Mary Birt/Bert in 1808 in Bulloch Co., Ga., then Elizabeth Jane probably died in Bulloch Co. Can anyone help me with this family?

AND is there anyone who can verify the names of the children of WILLIAM RUSHING and MARY HANCOCK (or JACKSON) who lived in South Carolina in 1810, 1820, 1830, and who were in Sumter Co., Ala., in 1840 and 1850? William died in late 1850 and his widow and sons remaining at home moved to Scott Co., Miss., and was recorded there on the 1860 census.

I am trying to determine the parents of Laban Rushing, or at least eliminate one of the online "theories" about his parents. Laban, born in North Carolina about 1812, lived in Sumter Co., Ala., from about 1839 until 1852 when he bought land in Scott Co., Miss.

B.
Am looking for info on the Nathaniel Giles shown on 1850 census, New York Twp., Sumter Co., ALA., with wife Ione,(born abt. 1795 NC), dau. S.M. (this would prob. be Sarah "Sallie" Moore Giles) born abt. 1820, son J.H. (prob. John Hiram) born abt. 1823,
and N.C. (prob. Nathaniel Calvin) born abt. 1825.

The father Nathaniel, (born abt. 1798 in NC) 1850 census, New York Twp., Sumter Co., ALA. I believe that I have confirmation as to who his parents were.

Have been reading the Giles postings on the Sumter Co. message board and have gotten myself thoroughly confused as to who everyone belongs to.

Can anyone help me? Is there an Ione Giles burial listing somewhere in Sumter Co.? BElieve that she died between 1853-1860.

This family shows up on the 1860 census in Sumter Co., without Ione, and there are a couple of Reids with them.

Mary

Hello

I am wondering if someone can see if there are marriage records for James Joseph Brooks and Annie Dale Underwood. I have a marriage date of July 3, 1912 but the place is unknown to me at this time.

I know James was living in Dancy, Pickens County, Alabama in June 1917 and in Preston, Sumter County, Alabama in 1910 so either County is possible.

They had Mary Lucille Brooks on Aug, 2, 1915 But the place is unknown right now on her as well.

Any help or info is greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Chris

Brooks family in Sumter during the 1910 census info needed

I am wondering if anyone has any information on a Brooks family that lived in Alabama in 1910. I have the following people on the 1910 census in Preston, Sumter, Alabama:

John Brooks [John T Brooks] abt 1858, head of house, B.P. Mississppi
Molly Brooks abt 1858, wife, B.P. Alabama
James J Brooks abt 1887, Son, B.P. Mississippi
Sidney E Brooks abt 1892 Son, B.P. Mississppi
Jefferson S Brooks abt 1899, Son, B.P. Mississppi

Both John and son James were blacksmith at their own home shop in 1910 and Sidney was a farmer then.

On the 1920 census it showed the John Brooks household and now the James Brooks household residing in Macon, Noxubee, Mississippi.

James married Annie Dale Underwood July 3rd, 1912. Annie's father was Thomas Underwood, B.P. Alabama

Annie's B.P. is listed as Alabama on the 1920 census

I am thinking James and Annie were probably married in Alabama because on the 1920 census it has their 2 oldest daughters B.P. as Alabama but we dont know exactly where.

Mary Lucille was born in 1915 and 1917 for the Annie Mae. There is also reason to think Annie may have had another child before Mary but i cant find any records on the child other then some information given on the other children's birth certificates. There is 1 child un-accounted for per childern born to mother versus children still living if that makes sense.

Jefferson is no where to be found after the 1910 census so did he die as well we don't know.

John and Molly had at least 7 children which 2 died per the 1910 census questionaire. The 5 known were James, Sidney, Jefferson , Lillie and Mattie but we cannot find any of the Brooks family in the 1900 census to show where or who was there.

I know there is a lot of unknown information needed so anything someone could find out for me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Chris

I have been trying to locate information about this Beavers family for some time now. They married in Greene County, Alabama and lived in Sumter County, Alabama. He was born around 1811 and died around 1862 and married in 1837. Their children were Alois/Alvis, Henry/Harry, Martha, Sarah, Lafayette, Abner and maybe Suphronia--all born between 1843 and 1859. I believe there was a book written about this family or his ancestors around 1940, but have been unable to locate the name or Author of it. I would like to find his brothers, parents and any other prior information. I have most of the descendants information, but really want to keep going with this. If anyone has written a book about this family, then I would gladly like to purchase it.
If anyone has information, I would appreciate it.
email to: mdcanu@yahoo.com

However, during years of conversations I heard there was a riot in Sumter County regarding the Robinson family. I am not sure what Robinson/Robertson family it was, because I was young when I heard of this mysterious story. If there is someone that has a family member that is between the age 70-100 "of sound mind" that knows about this story, please reply to the email above.
****Trying to resolve a conflicting story of which family of Robinson or Robertson's was involved and what caused the riot. Was it racially motivated?

Is there anyone located in Livingston who goes to the Courthouse on a regular basis and would be willing to check the records for it? According to the on-line Index to Sumter County Deeds, it is in Deed Book F, 1840-1842, Index page93, deed on page 919, John Greenlee(s), was Grantee and William Greenlee(s) was Grantor. If someone is willing to look for it and can send me a copy I'm willing to reimburse you for your time and the costs.
Thank you for your help.

Civil War Monument in Sumter County?????????

Is there a Civil War Monument in Sumter County?? I am Chuck James from Montgomery, Alabama. I am trying to locate and make a list of all Civil War Monuments in Alabama Counties across the state. I have not visited Sumter County as of yet and have learned that it makes it much easier to search by asking here first before I drive up and look around. I love to find those Confederate soldiers standing on a pedestal in front of the county court house. I also may find them tucked in some forgotten corner of a cemetery. Please let me know what exists in Sumter County. I have located 35 across the state so far. There are 67 Alabama Counties and I know there will not be 67 monuments. I like to visit, make photographs and record all the information on the monuments. I one day hope to make a web site listing all that exist in Alabama. I would like to compile all Civil War items of interest by county so other buffs can easily find what is out there. I appreciate your time and help.

Thanks Again
Chuck James
Montgomery, Alabama

Looking for any information on Ambrose and Hardy/Handy Yarbrough of Sumter County, AL. Ambrose moved from Jackson County, GA ca 1830. He may have been the brother of Joseph and Elizabeth Edwards Yarbrough of NC, Laurens County, GA and lastly Jackson County, GA.

One of Joseph and Elizabeth's daughters married Williamson Melborn/Milburn/Melburn. This is proved by an agreement signed in Jackson County on Oct 11, 1830 and recorded August 14, 1846 in Jackson County, GA having to do with the heirs of Joseph Yarbrough. Another one of Joseph and Elizabeth's daughters married a Joel Culpeper as proved by the same document.

Ambrose Yarbrough, Hardy Yarbrough and Wm. Melborn were living side by side in Sumter County, AL in 1840.

Is anyone researching these people?

Bledsoe. I have been told that Wiley had a brother named Abijah, But I only see a brother for Abijah listed as Wiley P. Williams. Would Abijah have had two brothers names Wiley? Wiley and Martha moved to Clarke County Mississippi in the 1860's and had several children. My Great great grandfather's name was wiley born 1860 the son of wiley and martha. I have had a hard time trying to find who to connect Wiley R. Williams to. Any information would be great!!! thanks

Does anyone know anything about the Furney Manley family in Sumter county?Would like to know anything about this family.
I'm looking for George W. Manley born in Ala. about 1834. He was in Choctaw co. in 186o,living with him is his wife Matilda (Sturdivant),J.Manley, a child with the last name of Ramsey. We have searched everywhere including his Civil War records and can't find his parents or any family. He had one son born just before he went to war. If he hadn't had this son we wouldn't be here. There was just the one child to this marriage and two weeks after joining the war he was shot and died 6th of June 1862. Wife filed for a pension and never got any.
Thanks for any help.
Diane
