While this inquiry is old, anyone searching for Boyds, Nixons and Dials needs to search in North Sumter County in Sumterville and Boyd. Bethel Methodist, Sumterville Methodist and the Boyd Cemeteries will be a trove of information. These families seemed to have moved together into Sumter County and intermarried. Have fun untangling your particular family web!

Since the last post, the Sumter County DAR has continued its cleanup of the Sumterville Methodist Cemetery. A broken gravestone for James Lemuel Porter was discovered validating an old transcription of this cemetery. He died July 26, 1857, aged 1 year, 2 days. The stone of this sister has not yet been uncovered. Per the old transcription, she died September 12, 1858, aged 8 months, 27 days.

I’m not related to any member of this family.

This is your problem -

Facts you should know about the early census records -
All census records [1790 – 1840] prior to the 1850 census ONLY listed the head of household; whether male or female.

NO specific age was stated for any family member
NO place of birth was stated – city, state, or country
NO city, town, or village is stated – only the county; however some census takers listed the township
NO street address was stated
NO marital status was stated – single, married, widowed, or divorced
NO family relationship was stated – brother, sister, cousin, son, daughter, wife, inlaw, etc…
NO occupation was stated
NO parental birthplaces are stated
NO race was stated [but assume “white”]

1850, 1860 & 1870 census records do not show family relationships, marital status or parental birthplaces.

Step children are not enumerated as “step” children
Adopted children are not enumerated as “adopted”
Grand children are not enumerated as “grand children”
Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan"

1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members

1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships +++

In addition ppl frequently "flip-flopped" btw their 1st and middle names from one census to the next.

And to make thins worse, census takers frequently only listed the 1st initial of a person's name.

Hello,

I am a Sumter researcher. My Rachael Perkins married in 1833 a Larkin Steele. I previosly reported him as Larkin State. Closer examination finds the grooms name was STEELE.

Sumter didnt exist in 1830 and I dont find the couple in an 1840 census or later in Sumter or anywhere else. I dont find any Larkin Steele land records.

Anyone know the Steeles from Sumter at the time?

Sue
sodixey @ hotmail. com

This is a very old post, but I will toss out what I have.

A Rachael Perkins in my family married a Larkin Steele. It could also be Steel. They married in Sumter in 1833, so the timing is about right.

I cant find Rachael or Larkin in any census, the marriage record is all I find.

I can tell you some of the siblings of Rachael ended up in Anderson, Angelina, Robertson, and Leon Counties in Texas.

WINSTON Roy Lee Winston, 84 years ago, was born in Sumter County, Alabama on March 24, 1928, to Marzene Norris and Dollie Foster.
His day of death was December 8, 2012 in Dublin, Ohio.

Roy married Gladys Evelyn Conley on July 26, 1947.

He is survived by Gladys, wife of 65 years; sons, Ricky (Brenda), deceased), Roy (Sharon); daughters, Barbara (Edward), Cassandra (Alfred), Rhonda (Herbert), Wendelyn (Lamont), Kimberly (Vincent), and Anita Berry.
Also cherished by 24 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren as well as siblings and many cousins.
It is rare when someone's passion is also their livelihood. However, our father and grandfather was able to enjoy both for 40+ years.
Aside from his family, his backhoe was his pride and joy. He will be missed by many.

Friends received Saturday from 9:30-10:30 am at the MAEDER-QUINT-TIBERI FUNERAL Home, 1068 S.

I called the county clerk office for Sumter county asking how I might aquire copies of vitals for family who lived in Sumter in the 1830s.

I was told I had to put my request in writing what records I was requesting and snail mail it to their office. They would then reply back with a snail mail letter what they could find and the cost to obtain copies of the vitals I was requesting. They dont comminicate any information over the phone or via email.

That has been nearly 2 months ago and no reply.

Anyone else had such experience? Or something different experience?

Anyone who lives local who might help me out with my request? I dont live in AL.

Sue
sodixey @ hotmail.com ( remove spaces if replying)

I am documenting migrations from Carteret and other related eastern NC counties from 1820 to 1840. Sumter was a destination and I found the info on martin hall rumley in a paper stuck in a ledger book that was owed by sarah duncan in beaufort. thats how I traced him to sumter county. I would be interested in other rumleys you mentioned that migrated to indiana. My connection to the rumley family is that my gg grandfather was named denard rumley roberts. And his family was from Cedar Island in carteret county which is where the rumleys lived. What I have found is that these people migrated as a group.

I'm trying to locate the cemetery where James B Flowers is buried. I found him listed in the Alabama, Deaths, 1908-1974 index in familysearch.org. He died June 25, 1910 in Mobile Alabama, but it states on the cert. that he was buried in Cuba, AL. Would someone have access to Cemetery records in this location that might list where he is buried? I've checked findagrave.com and he is not there. Any help is appreciated.

I am very interested in all of the information that you have on the McElroy family. I had a lot of information until Hurricane Katrina that took all of my research. All I have is what was in my computer and it was what I had verified. I have a George W. McElroy b. 1843 in Sumter Co.,AL but other siblings were born in Dallas Co.,AL where the parents Henry McElroy Jr. and Dorcas Coleman were married in abt. 1827. I also know that there was a Henry Sr. and Jr. both in the 1830 Dallas Co.,AL Census but don't know if that was due to a "father/son relationship" or just due to "age differences" in the two men. You may email me direct at h2ofamdigging@yahoo.com or post here. Thanks, Pam

George Perkins and family in Sumter County circa 1830s

My George Perkins probably migrated to Sumter county some time aroun 1832. He was in Dallas County, AL prior to and including 1830 census. He sold his land there in May, 1832. He was a neighbor to Eli Riggins. Seems Eli is a neighbor in both counties, having land in nearby sections.

George had several daughters of which it appears two married in Sumter according to county records.

Rachael Perkins marries a Larkin State in 1833
Nancy Perkins marries Harvey Hayman in 1835.

I am unable to located anyone in the state of AL with the name Larkin State, so I am wording about a transcription error. Anyone have a "Larkin" in their tree living in or around Sumter that could have been this person who married Rachael Perkins.

Other Perkins children were John W. Perkins who married a Tabitha, possible maiden name Red. According to other researchers, she was perhaps a daughter of James E. Red/Redd of Greene county.

George and family didnt live in the county long as they migrated to Mobile by 1840 census. In September of 1850 they are in Union Parish, LA and back in Mobile in January, 1851. They are double counted in that census, they didnt go by the strict June 1st census date.

Anyone have family who migrated similiarily?

Sue
sodixey@hotmail.com

There is an L.T. Porter in the 1870 Sumter County census. His wife is listed as Margaret with 4 sons Charley, Willie, Eddie and Walter. I have reason to believe that his wife is Margaret M. Hutchins whose siblings Ruth, William P. and Celeste and father James L. are buried at the Sumterville Methodist Cemetery in Sumterville, AL. In Nelle Jenkins book, Pioneer Families of Sumter County, two of the Porter's children are listed as buried there as well; James Lemuel d. July 26, 1857 and Sallie Bell d. not given. Margaret's husband is also listed as T.J. Porter in other sources.

I'm trying to find a Death Certificate for Henry Bell Key born about 1852 in Mississippi and died in York, Alabama June 21, 1927. He might have been listed as Mullato and his wife used different first names, either Mary or Mollie.

Thank you

Shap

Hello PA Brown

The family and I (my mother, aunts/uncles, grandma, cousins) will be in the Birmingham area Easter weekend for the Homegoing of my aunt, Willie Pearl (Doublin) Ivory aka FAT. I would like to meet you. If Jesse Mumford (married to Ruby Mumford in CLE, OH) is your father, then Willie Pearl would be your aunt (Jessie's baby sister). I hope that you get this message in the next week and contact me. The entire family will be in Birmingham that next weekend. My email is shavonnlee@gmail.com (I can access at all times). Thanks...God Bless
