While driving down Hwy 49 from New Site towards Dadeville, I noticed a road called "Peters Island Road" as well as an island on an online map called Peter's Island. Does anyone know anything about this island and how it got it's name? I'm sure it was named after an original settler last name Peters and I'm curious to know who it was. I'm related to two brothers, Andrew Jackson Peters and John Knox Peters, who settled in the New Site area during the mid 1800s. Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated.
