Lucinda Elizabeth Ables or Abel died shortly after 1900. She was married to Thomas M abel or Ables. I don't know exactly when or where she died but they had lived in the Jasper co Al area before 1900 and Thomas M Abel died in 1918 in Walker co Al. Would anyone be able to tell me if there is a cemetery in Walker co Al that lists Lucinda Elizabeth Ables or Abel and when and where she died? thanks, Ross

Would anyone know of or have a complete listing of the old flatwoods cemetery in Walker county. None of the Websites on Walker county list any burials there. I do not live in Alabama and would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions. Most of my line of Johnson family is buried there. My gr gr grandfather William Wiley Johnson is buried there, was in Civil War. I would like to know if his tombstone is a civil war stone and has his unit on it. Any replies would be appreciated.

the cemetery is outside of Nauvoo.....i don't remeber the road number but you go across the railroad tracks like you are headed toward Eldridge....turn right just after you cross the tracks....follow a very winding road.....it's several miles down this road and you have to watch for a sign posted on the left, it's down a dirt road.....the last time i was there, i had to leave my car and walk the part of the way because of the ruts in the road, all the names i have are the Norris family and the some of the Lawson's.

My husband remembers the Johnson name, but, nothing personally about them. His oldest brother, that stills lives in the Nauvoo area remembers the Johnsons that lived in the the Jagger Community, but none personally. My husband's parents, grandparents and other relative are also buried at Flat Woods Cemetery.
There is a Cemetery Decoration And All day singing at the Church and Cemetery, the 2nd Sunday of May every year. There are a lot of Keetons and McGough still living in that area.
The cemetery is located between Carbon Hill and Nauvoo just off of Hwy 11.
If you want to email me it will be fine.
While I don't know a lot about the subject, my family (Turner) was coal miners in the Gamble Mines in Walker County Alabama (not too far from Jasper, Alabama). My Great Grandfather, James H. Turner was actually killed in the mine in 1948 when saving one of his relatives from being hit by a huge boulder that was falling.

I've seen in the census records from 1910 that he is listed as a coal miner even then. Walker County still has coal mining, but it is pretty much all strip mining these days.

Hope this helps,
-Dave Turner

I believe that I descend from William O McKey who was in Walker County, AL in 1850. I have found where the Alabama legislature in Jan. of that year restored to him all "rights and privaleges" of other citezans of the state of Alabam. My question is, what did he do to lose them in the first place? He was in Nacogdoches County, Texas by the mid 1850s.

They were in the 1850 Marshall Co, Al census like this.

Sims Thomas b/abt 1815 SC
Matilda abt 1819 SC
Deliah E. abt 1839 Al
Jepty G. abt 1841 Al
Mary Ann C. abt 1846 Al
Jane Ann abt 1846 Al
Elizabeth abt 1850 Al

In 1860 census I find a JAPTHA G. THOMAS a/20 Al. living with a E. M. Jones doing farm labor. I think this could be the Jepthy G. Thomas in the 1850 census.

Someone has posted on roots web that SIMS THOMAS died after 1858 in Walker Co, Al. This person has one child listed as Mary Ann C.
I have looked high and low for both Maggie and Wesley.
I cannot even find a death certificate for Margaret.

I did find only two records of most likely their son.
Wesley McHone, born 1855 alabama

Found him in the 1930 Colbert AL census with
wife may (1855) and daughter Irene 1908).
this son Wesley, which I am assuming for he is the ONLY WESLEY McHone showing up was drafted in WWI showed he was working as a brakeman for the RR and lived in Jasper Al.
On this reg. he states he was born 12/06/1881

I am sorry.. you probably already have this info...
Do you know where Margaret was born? Or even Wesley? Know of perhaps a middle name for Wesley that he may have used?
Know of any siblings on either side?

Dangest thing... no finding of her with death or in census... Wesley too.

I remember a Charlie Cain who lived and worked in Coal Valley in the mid to late 1940's. He had two boys, Robert and Jimmy Ray, but I don't know what became of them. We moved from there in 1947 and I don't know if they were still there, but I don't think so.

No, I haven't been able to find anyone to contact with the Randolph Caine line. I know my line went back and forth to Illinois for work and other relatives. I'm just so stuck and frustrated. His name might as well be John Smith! I've responded to one post today. This man is obviously talking about my line. I'm hoping he can give me just a small clue to search on.

Thank GOD! Please tell me more. This is the family and you are the only one who seems to have known anything about them. Jimmy and Robert have passed away. I'm stuck with the father's and mother's name. Charles Walter Cain was born about 1882 in Alabama and married Dorothy Velma McKinney. He was 54 and she was 19 at the time of my father's birth-1936. I've traced somewhat back on the McKinney side, but no one has been able to tell me anything about Charlie. Please share anything that you may know. sdcain1202@yahoo.com

Hi Shelia,

I was thinking of you the other day.

Have you looked at Cains from Mississippi? I know I looked at Cains in the Cordova area once and found they were from MS and couldn't tie them to my line. Of course, they probably were from AL first and moved back for jobs.

Have you made contact with anyone from the Randolph P. Caine line to see if they have a clue for you?

Take care,
Pam Cain

From what I understand my great uncle was also killed in a mining accident in 1910. Jesse James Nabors, if anyone knows of this accident or where I might find any information on this I would love to know. Thanks in advance.
Shirley Sills
