Travel to Macon County 1850 -port of entry

I am researching a family that lived in Union Springs in 1850- William H. Waugh and his wife Malinda Rutherford. His father Robert Waugh from Scotland supposedly went to visit his son about 1850. I did find a passenger list to New Orleans from Scotland for a Rob. Waugh age 70 in Dec 1849. Would it have been practical to have landed in New Orleans and travelled to Union Springs in 1850. How long would it have taken to travel from New Orleans to Macon county? Why wouldn't they have landed in Georgia? I am wondering if I have the right record and known very little about this area.
