I am looking for a Clayton L Bullard who might be buried at Pine Grove. I've heard that "A" Clayton Bullard was buried there, but I don't know if it's "MY" Clayton Bullard. If you can find any information that would be great.

Walter Winston Smith Elizabeth Downing Attalla Etowah Alabama

I am posting this in two places, so I apologize for the repetition.

SHORT VERSION: is Elizabeth Smith, mother of William Winston Smith, one and the same as Elizabeth Downing, daughter of Archibald Downing of Attalla, Etowah County, Alabama?

VERY LONG VERSION:
I am researching the DOWNING family, but this is specifically regarding a SMITH branch (thus all the problems & the overload of information). As relates to the matter below, it is the family of Archibald and Elizabeth Downing who were living in Attalla by 1880 (and both of them died there; their burial locations are unknown). They had 9 daughters, one of whom was Elizabeth Downing. Before the Civil War, the family lived around Morrisville, Calhoun County.

In 1856, in Calhoun [Benton] County, Elizabeth Downing married "Wilburn Smith." Looking at the 1850 Census records, I found a Smith family living next door to the Downings in Benton Co. The eldest son was "C W Smith" born in Georgia.

The 1860 Census in Calhoun Co shows "CW Smith" with his wife "Elizabeth Smith" and children "Walter" 2 & "Mary" 1.

The 1866 Alabama Census shows an "Elizabeth Smith" with 1 boy and 2 girls living in Calhoun Co literally surrounded by Downings. Her husband has died from illness in the war. A Charles W Smith is listed among the honored dead on the Calhoun County Confederate War memorial.

The 1870 and 1880 censuses are problematic. 1870 shows Elizabeth Smith in St Clair County with son "Walder Smith" 12, and daughters "Ida" 10 & "Elizabeth" 8. HOWEVER, this 1870 Census shows "Eliza Downing" in St Clair County in the household of Archibald Downing ("Eliza Downing" did not appear in that household in 1860).

Given the nature of the census, I'm inclined to dismiss this as a census error, Elizabeth either visiting that day or her parents misstating who exactly lived there.

However.... in 1880, in Etowah County, in Clear Creek/Attalla, "Elizabeth Smith" (with parents born where Elizabeth Downing's parents were born) lives with dau "Ida Smith" 18 (whose father was born in Georgia). (This census was conducted on 5 June)

But also in 1880 in Steel Station, St Clair Co, in the household of "Bud Langley" (whose wife was "Amanda"), a "sister in law" "Elizabeth Danning" appears...which on closer inspection looks like "Downing" (in 1878, Elizabeth Downing's sister, Amanda Downing, married "Wilson Langley" in Etowah County.) (This census was conducted on 17 June)

A Walter Smith married Fannie Dillard 12 Sept 1880 in Etowah Co. Among their children was a Charles Wilburn Smith (c1881 - 1944), a "Lizzie Smith Cornutt," and a "Jince Smith" (Jincey is a very common name among this Downing family.)

An Ida Smith married James Millwood 18 May 1884 in Etowah. In 1900, a James & Ida Millwood lived in Winston Co, with their children, including daughter "Mandy". In 1920, Ida _M_ Millwood appears as "mother in law" in the household of Sanford L Reid and his wife "Mandie." Ida Millwood's gravestone gives her birth year as 1859.

In 1886 in Etowah County, a Lizzie Smith married a John May. After that, things get even fuzzier. A John May of Etowah Co died in 1895, and his widow, "Elizabeth May" recieved a Confederate widow's pension in 1911 and 1912. Her name appears on the list for 1913, but no payment was made, suggesting she had died.

The only Elizabeth May I could find for 1900 was a patient in Tuscaloosa (hospital for the "insane" although there was also a TB hospital there). Her listed birth year of 1838 and birth places for parents are consistant with known facts for Elizabeth Downing. Also, it lists 2 out of 3 children still living.

The book "Little Known Burial Sites & Cemeteries: Etowah County" by W A Lewis shows a Smith Family Cemetery (page 215). It lists "Elizabeth Smith 1837-1912." Also buried there are "Walter Winston [W W] Smith" (1857-1920) "Fannie Smith" (1867-1955).

WW & Fannie Smith had a daughter, Annie Smith, whose daughter Jewel Smith (1913-2006) married Arthur B [Doc] Lamons, all of whoma are also buried at the Smith Family Cemetery in Attalla (which I tried to find on a recent trip to AL but failed to do so).

While all these evidence points toward Elizabeth Smith, mother of Walter Winston Smith, being Elizabeth Downing, I'm not certain. After all, we're dealing with the name Smith. If anyone knows of a family Bible or such stating that this Elizabeth Smith was one and the same as Elizabeth Downing, please let me know. I'd really appreciate it!

I am looking for info on Reuben Ward Hill b.1878 d.1955 wife Lethia Brakefield. Lived in Morris,Jefferson Ala. More particulary a daughter listed in the 1940 Census Ruth June Hill.She isn't listed in any prior Census'.She was my Grandmother,she married Charles W.Clark,and had Helen and Jack who are also listed with her in the 1940 Census and them being Reuben and Lethia's grandchildren.I have records stating that her mother's name was Martha,and my grandmother's last name being Hoover.Its so complicated,unless she was born out of wedlock,her mother being Martha Hoover,and her naming her Ruth Hill from Reuben.Can anyone help!Thank you and God bless!

Father is James Clark born also in either Tenn,or NC Mother's name was Margaret White,believed to have been born in Va,or possibly Tenn. I have some obituaries from there. Both of my great great grandparents are buried there. My great grandparents also have a plot there (it is bordered with their name) on it, but they are not buried in it, not sure if anyone else is. Hi, Thank you for responding. I recently bought a copy of that book and it is very helpful. I am also using some records that I found in local libraries.I agree, the cemetery is in very bad shape, that is why I am trying to research it fully before any more graves are destroyed.I am trying to find out which church was involved in this cemetery at the beginning because that might lead to even more records.I am making copies of all obits that I find for the people buried there.If you find anything out about an early church that might have started the cemetery, please post it on this thread. There is a book in the Columbus Georgia library that gives a listing of the graves in Pine Grove and I believe a history on the cemetery. The book is called "Sacred to the memory of Russell county Alabama" The cemetery is in bad shape, they keep the grass cut for the most part, but the briars are awful and there are many graves that are sunken. If you plan on making a trip there, take some foot protections (we wear snake boots). Not for snakes, but for the briars.

Hi, thank you for your kind words. I enjoy helping people find info on their families and it helps me to become a better researcher as well. I did not find any Bulers but I did find a few Yeartys. Four of them are buried in plot C220 in Girard Cemetery in Phenix City. They are J.H.Yearty born 13 August 1869 and died 19 Dec 1930, K.C. Yearty, no dates, Mrs. L.V. Yearty, no dates, and Mrs. Nellie Yearty, born 17 Oct. 1881 died 20 Nov. 1934. I have a few other books that I can also look in. Send me an email address either on this thread or privately as a message through this site and I'll let you know what I find. Suzanne ( I just looked in Muscogee County, Georgia on the Find a Grave site and found a few more in addition to the 4 above that are buried in Russell County, Alabama. There are also a lot of them buried in other Georgia Counties.)

Thank you. After reading some of your other posts, it seems that it would not be and imposition to ask you to look up my ancestor. Would that be correct? Jesse Lewellyn Buler was born May 31,1865 in Girard, I believe. Married Rachel Agnes Yearty there in 1889. Have gotten stuck on who his parents were. In the 1870 census, Jesse is 5 years old and his mother (maybe Jane)is the head of household. Making a wild assumption that his father died in the war. One source lists dad as Will.-born 1835. Can you help? PS You seem to be a great source of help to a lot of people. Thank you.

Ok, I made a trip to the courthouse and the records are called "Mortgage Deed and Record" books. The earliest records of that type for Russell County are for 1833. These books do not just contain land deeds. I flipped through a few of them and they also contain wills. This might be common in these types of record books but I was surprised that wills are also in there. Suzanne

Hi, thanks for responding. I am in East Central Alabama but I did not know that there is a museum in Loachapoka. I will have to check that out. I am in the process of compiling a list of as many resources in this area as I can find as I am putting together a research binder. There seem to be a great number of places to search in this area and I thought a binder with everything in one place would be helpful as I go along. It is funny how some records are scattered around the country when a local copy of them doesn't even exist. Maybe lots of ideas will be shared on this thread. Have a great day, Suzanne

Are you nearby or far away? If you are in Central Alabama, the Lee County Museum in Loachapoka has some items, have not yet explored their books but found quite a bit here at the Tallassee library. Many books on all the different counties ie: Lee, Tallapoosa, Chambers, Macon, Elmore, Russell.

Russell County Courthouse Record Question

Hi, I will be making a research trip to the Russell County Courthouse soon. Do any of you know what the Russell County record collection is called that contains the records of the first land sales in that county? I know that in some other counties that collection is called a "Tract Book" or a "Land Entry Record" but I don't know what Russell County calls it. Thanks!

I;m trying to obtain any info, on Reuben Ward Hill,and a daughter,of his, her name is Ruth June Hill.I have found them in the 1940 Census,but prior to that she is never mentioned in any Census,she was born in 1907 I believe in Bessemer City,Ala. I think she may have been illegitimate,her Mother's name that I have been told was Martha Hoover,or maybe Hill.She married Charles W Clark and had a girl and a boy born in 1929 and 1931 (Helen,Jack).I would greatly appreciate any info, that you may have.

This may be far too late....but yes, travel by ROAD from N.O. to Montgomery and on to Union Springs would have been quite possible. It would have been via the Old Federal Road that connected Milledgeville GA to N.O. Back then, the Road was the only way to go!

Thank you for this; I appreciate your looking it up. Unfortunately it’s the wrong Hammack family – there were 2 Wm Hammack’s in Macon Co around that time. In the 1850 census u cite, the kids do not correspond to the “correct” age & sex when compared to the Ala surveys of 1855 and 1866, or to later federal censuses, or to family records.
I suspect Wm & Sus. are on the 1850 & 60 fed census but search engines can’t match them (poor spelling?). So I would like to go through all listings for Loachapoka for the 1850 & 1860 censuses and try to identify the family.
But, for instance, the 1850 census for Macon Co (Dist 21) is on 273 pages. I thought someone might know which pages relate to Loachapoka which wd narrow my search? Also for the 1860 census?

Hello all,

I need help with a puzzle.

I have Mary Jane Stephens who married Joseph Marion Adair 1861 in Tallapoosa Co.

In 1860 there were two Joseph Adair's in Tallapoosa, one b. 1829 the other 1839, both b. GA, but NOT one b. 1844.

In the civil war records there appears to have been two Jospeh Adair's there also, one in Co. C 57 AL who enlisted at 18 in Goodwater (Coosa Co.)(b. 1844), and the other who enlisted at 22 @ Cusseta (Chambers Co.)(b.1839) in Co. H John Thompson's Mounted Vols. This second Joseph M. Adair died in service, as Mary Jane filed in 1863 as widow.

The J.M. Adair b. 1844 lived & married Sarah Frances Blair in 1867.

It seems everyone, I mean everyone, has the two J.M. Adair's combined as the same one, marrying both women, which has to be wrong.
