I know it has been awhile, but, YES, those that you mentioned are also related to me. I have been trying to find out the last name of William B. Hawkin's wife, Lucy. Someone I talked with said it was "Seborn" I think, but have not been able to find it. Do you have any ideas? Please e-mail me direct at: wirwin1758@wmconnect.com so we can talk some more. There is more I need to find out about these Hawkins. I would also like to know if any of them still live in Alabama in the same area? Thanks, Wanda

I am researching the Lewis line. Richmond born 1890 married to Bessie. His dad, Arthur Lewis, born 1865 and married to Ella. And Arthur's dad, Oliver Lewis, born 1835 and married to Jane.

I'm also interested to know what plantation Oliver Lewis worked on, assuming he was born into slavery.

Thanks a bunch for any leads!!

I am researching my grandfather. He married Ann Lewis. In 1930 he lived in Blacks Bluff Wilcox county. He possibly has a sister named Jessie.

Although I've been able to trace his wife Ann Lewis line, I hit a brick wall when it comes to George Williams. I've never met him, and my Mom does not remember him.

Thanks so much for any help!!

I am very curious now. Nobody in my family know anything about her. I would appreciate it. Thank you, Eva Young

I have come to a stop on searching for my great grandmother. Is there any free websites out there to look up marriage license. She died in 1920 at the age of 27. She lived in Alabama. I can not find anything on her at all. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If you're looking for information on Ophelia Amigh, try researching the Geneva School for Girls in Illinois where she was superintendant. I hate to tell you this but your gggggrandmother was an evil woman who tortured the girl's at the school and many believe she is directly responsible for the deaths of the infants who are buried in the Girl's School Cemetery.

I am researching my paternal side of my family tree. I did not know my birth father but have embarked on an interesting journey of discovery through DNA. I am trying to find information or leads on the father of Mack Cune Williams born 1891 from Covington County Alabama. His Mothers name Was Francis Williams, his fathers name has been referred to as “bill Williams” I keep hitting a brick wall here, I have found them in the 1890’s census with the father listed as “H Williams” Mack had at least two brothers (William Oliver born in 1868) and Oscar. My Y DNA indicates the surnames Kennedy, Dixon and Williams. My closest match being Williams.. Any leads would be greatly appreciated!

Elizabeth Mary "Lizzie" (Gates) Caldwell (11 Apr 1861 - 13 Apr 1951) - AL

I'm looking for the parents of a great-great-great grandmother of mine, Elizabeth Mary "Lizzie" Gates. She was born on April 11, 1860 in Alabama. I don't know what county.

On December 08, 1878 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama, she married William Alexander Caldwell. He was born on October 15, 1857 in Tallapoosa County, Alabama and died on February 09, 1921 in Talladega, Talladega County, Alabama. He is buried at Mount Sheron Cemetery in Childersburg, Talladega County, Alabama. His parents were Charles Mitchell "Mitt" and (his second wife) Elizabeth "Eliza" (Hutchinson) Caldwell.

Elizabeth died on April 13, 1951 in Childersburg, Talladega County, Alabama and is buried in an unmarked grave at Childersburg Cemetery, Childersburg, Talladega County, Alabama.

I have a copy of Elizabeth's death certficiate, but it doesn't list any vital information for her aside from her birth and death dates. The informant was an H. D. Wilson, but what relation he had to her, I don't know. The cause of death is listed as "senality." The funeral home which dealt with Elizabeth was Service Funeral Home in Sylacauga, Talladega County, Alabama. It apparently doesn't exist anymore, though, from what I tried searching on the Internet. A very old post on Roots Web said its records only begin at 1954, so those don't help. Elizabeth also didn't file for Social Security, so I can't look for an application to help.

I've posted queries on Elizabeth before, and it's been suggested that she might be a Margaret Gates listed in the 1870 Tallapoosa County, Alabama Census who was a daughter of a Benjamin and Eveline (Williams) Gates. However, I've found nothing which indicate Elizabeth was ever called Margaret, so I'm doubtful of that connection. Though various Censuses report different areas, Elizabeth's father was from Georgia and her mother was from South Carolina.

If anyone can shed light on this genealogical brick wall, it'd be much appreciated! It's incredibly frustrating when I'm able to find information on her husband just fine, but not her. Please either post in this thread or feel free to E-Mail me at jacobcarpenter@zoho.com

Jacob Carpenter
jacobcarpenter@zoho.com

Martha Ruth "Minnie" (Baker) Caldwell (18 Apr 1885 - 29 Jan 1966) - AL/GA

I'm looking for the parents of one of my great-great grandmothers, Martha Ruth "Minnie" Baker. She was born on April 18, 1885 in Alabama; I don't know the county. On March 11, 1900 in Shelby County, Alabama, she married Benjamin Franklin "Ben" Caldwell. He was born on May 20, 1881 in Alabama (again, I don't know the county) and died on August 29, 1956 at Bryce Hospital in Tuscaloosa, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. His parents were William Alexander and Elizabeth Mary "Lizzie" (Gates) Caldwell.

Martha died on January 29, 1966 in Macon, Bibb County, Georgia.

"Minnie" was what my great-great grandmother always went by, both in person and on paper. I only discovered her true name when I found an entry my late grandmother had made in the family tree section of my mother's baby book.

I ordered a copy of Martha's death certificate to see if it would have provided any information, but the informant, my great-grandmother Bessie Mae (Caldwell) Carroll, apparently didn't know who her maternal grandparents were. Someone once told me to try seeing if Martha may have filed for Social Security, since one is supposed to list their parents if known, but she apparently didn't.

Physically, Martha was four feet and ten inches tall. She'd straight strawberry-blonde hair and hazel eyes. The only information I know about her ancestry is that she was supposedly part-Creek Indian; someone in the family had twenty-two children; one of her ancestors wore a tall hat in which he kept his money because he didn't trust the bank with it.

The aforementioned Bessie Mae (Caldwell) Carroll was the only one of Martha's eleven children to survive to adulthood. I've copies of death certificates for a brother William "Bill, Billy" Caldwell who died at five years old and an unnamed son who lived for only a day. Bessie also allegedly had a sister named Elizabeth who died at three years old.

If anyone can shed light on this genealogical brick wall, it'd be most appreciated! It's been a question that's gone unanswered for the past forty-six years. Please reply here or contact me at jacobcarpenter@zoho.com if wanted.

Jaocb Carpenter
jacobcarpenter@zoho.com

Born: 1833; died 1913. He served in 33rd Alabama Infantry, was wounded twice, and drew a pension. He was born in Dale County, Alabama. He married three times: America Morris, Joyacey Brown, Lottie Parish. Sure would appreciate it if anyone has any information on his parents, or a valid source that the census of 1850 Josiah and Harriet is in fact Josiah Benjamin. My records indicate the Benjamin listed is actually Benjamin James Parish, who is buried with Josiah and Harriet.
Thanks,
Sara Parish

Re: Andrew Wynne

There are two nieces listed with Andrew Wynne and his wife on the 1900 Census. Have you been able to identify the nieces with the Wynne or Butler families?

I note that the nieces were born in Mississippi with both parents born in Mississippi, which indicates a sibling of Andrew or Nellie was born in Mississippi.

If you look at the 1880 Census for DeSoto County, Mississippi there are two Wynn families:

George Wynn, age 59, born about 1821 Virginia, Mulatto
Wife: Caroline Wynn, age 56, born about 1824 Virginia, Black
Son: George Wynn, age 10, born about 1870 Mississippi, Black

Randall Wynn, age 55, born about 1825 North Carolina, Black
He is a widower with four children born about 1868-1871

Remember the census taker spoke to whoever answered the door. Many times if there was no answer the census taker just asked the next door neighbor. So, the information as to the places of birth for his parents may be suspect. On the 1910 Census Alabama is the birthplace of Andrew's father and mother. Also note that Andrew has been married twice and Nellie has been married three times. Andrew died sometime between 1910-1920 as Nellie is a widow on the 1920 census.
Robert Clark 1820 St Clair Nathaniel William James Polly

My ancestress, Mary "Polly Clark", married James Downing in St Clair County, Alabama in 1822. He was a widower with five children, and he appears in the 1820 Census with those children. I have thoroughly researched their descendants. Unfortunately, I do not know anything about her origins, other than the various census records which consistantly state she was born abt 1804 in Georgia.

But in 1820, in the St Clair census, about 10 households from the widower James Downing, is the household of Robert Clark. He is the only Clark to appear in the 1820 census of St Clair County.

The break down of his household is: 1 male over 21 [presumably Robert Clark], 3 males under 21, 1 female over 21 [presumably Mrs Robert Clark but not neccesarily], and 1 female under 21 [in 1820, my Polly Clark would've been abt 16].

Checking the marriage records for St Clair county, I discovered between 1816 and 1840, 5 marriages involving persons named Clark, all of which occurred between 1822 & 1824. One of these was Martha Clark's marriage to Curtis G Beason, a well-established line, and she is NOT one of the 1820 Clarks as she arrived in St Clair in 1822 with her widowed mother and no Clark siblings.

That leaves 4 Clark marriages:
Polly Clark = James Downing 1822 (my ancestors)
Nathaniel Clark = Mary Copeland 1823
William Clark = Elizabeth Lawson 1823
James Clark = Aby Truss 1824

All these surnames occur in the 1820 Census. These Clarks appear to match up nicely with the number and gender of the 1820 Clark "children," and if those "children" were teens in 1820, these dates would be appropriate to marry (in that period).

Robert Clark disappears after 1820. There is a Robert Clark in Jackson County whose age would match up, but there's no way to tell (ironically, he lives near a James Downing who is NOT my ancestor as the ages and family makeup does not match; I know there were other James Downings in Alabama at this time. Mine is the one in and around St Clair.]

William Clark shows up in the 1830 Census in St Clair, next door to a Jincey Larson (perhaps his sister-in-law). He is within the right age range to have been one of the Clark "children." After that, I cannot trace him due to how common the name is.

James Clark appears in the 1830 and 1840 Censuses in St Clair. Again, he is within the right age range. And again, I cannot trace him after that.

In the 1840s, two Clarks marry in St Clair-- Edwin Clark to Louisa Robbins (1845)and John Clark to Unicy Glidewell (1842). I suspect these are sons of James Clark, whose household had two males between 10 & 15 in 1840.

Nathaniel Clark disappears from St Clair County. A man [or men] with that name appears in 1840 in Walker County and in Franklin County in 1850 & 1870. The Franklin man is variously listed as being born in South Carolina in 1797 and in Georgia in 1804.

If anyone has researched this family and knows anything about the 1820 Clarks of St Clair County, I'd love to hear from you. I am unable at this time to travel to St Clair county to reseach deeds etc.

Thank you for your time. I really appreciate it.
Anna

Ichabod C Hill, son of James and Sarah Hill of Georgia and Alabama

Greetings, I am Jerry McDowell and have been researching Hill families for almost 40 years. Several weeks ago in Feb. 2013, I completed a two week trip through Georgia and Alabama working on one particular James Hill born about 1795-1798 in Georgia. Most of the sites I'm seeing on ancestry.com agree that he married first Martha Darden and then her sister Sarah Darden. Few, if any, know that after he moved to Monroe County, GA, he married Sarah Clark, a widow and so the census records from 1850-1880 show James with a wife named Sarah, but she is NOT Sarah Darden Hill. Many of the sites show that James' father was a John Hill married to a Sarah Henry and depending on which census you read, James was born in one of four different states. Each of the 1850-1880 census records show his birth either in Tennessee (1850), South Carolina (1860), Mississippi (1870), or Georgia (1880) - Georgia is correct in my opinion. If you have proof that James' father was a John Hill (some say from the Surry/Stokes County Hills in NC) would you please share it. I believe that information to be incorrect but welcome your comments and proof. One Robert Hill, Sr. died with a will in 1825 in Warren County, GA and named a son James Hill. This Robert Hill family, both ancestors and descendants, were highly intermarried with the Darden family. For a James Hill to come out of another state and marry into this family seems highly speculative. I have traced James through Warren and Monroe County, GA and to Marion and Lamar Counties, AL where his son Ichabod had a number of liens/trust deeds in the 1870s and 1880s. I would love to put to rest who the father of James is as I am completing my writing of this Hill family. I have traced the family back to North Carolina and Virginia to about 1700 with plenty of supporting documentation. I'll be happy to share my thoughts and I would be most appreciative if anyone can help me. I know that Ichabod's death certificate says his father was born in Miss, but obviously Ichabod didn't fill out that death certificate; it was completed by his son/informant John Thomas Hill of Sulligent, AL where the family lived from about 1860 forward. John Thomas Hill did get James' wife's name and mother of Ichabod as Sarah Clark correct. Ichabod's name in 1870-1880 was spelled Cade; it was never shown in any record as "Caine" - perhaps someone can clarify that as well. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.
james Robert Owen son of John Owen

Hoping someone may be able to help. I found information that i was looking for on Rootsweb and ancestry when I was looking for the name of J.R. Owen. Over the years I have always thought his names was Jackson, but according to what I found today it is listed as James. My J.R. Owen (my great great grandfather) was born in February of 1860. According to his death certificate his father was listed as John Owen (he was married to Amanda Caroline Liner). As I dug a little deeper I found that John Owen died in Muscadine, Alabama in 1905. What is strange here is that my great grandfather William Allen Owen was born in 1886 in Muscadine. He was 19 years old when John passed away. All this info that I have found seems to put me in the right direction. Does anyone have any more information on James Robert Owen. I have been trying to finds clues to this for the past 10 plus years.

Carl
