1940s Civil Service Work?

My father, James Hanlon (1898-1987)(from Iowa) went to Fairbanks in the early 1940s to work in Civil Service. The only stories I remember him telling are of huge mosquitos and monstrous polar bears. Would love to have any pictures or stories from the time; maybe what he did and where he might have been stationed.
Thank you in advance for any information or direction you can provide.
