The Daily Alaska Dispatch, Juneau, Alaska
Thursday, November 7, 1918
Page 3
Teacher Of Natives Dies Of Influenza
There have been five deaths in Metlakatla due to influenza, but the conditions are improving there at present, is the word received from there by Superintendent of Native Education, Charles W. Hawkesworth. From Hydaberg (sic) he received a wire from Mr. Hansome, one of the teachers there, saying that his wife, who was also a teacher, had died en route from Hydaberg (sic) to the hospital at Ketchikan. The body was to have south on the Humboldt.

The Hansomes were new teachers in the Indian service and had just started their first year in Alaska. They had secured equipment from the News-Miner at Ketchikan and started a Native publication at Hydaberg (sic). Superintendent Hawkesworth spoke very well of the progress they had made in their work in that place.

Hello Betty,
I read your post and was wondering if you could help. I'm trying to trace my great great grandma.....she worked in the red light district....her name was Betty as well. She worked on creek street and eventually became a madame....my great grandma, Alise, was her daughter and her father was a lawyer in the area....my grandpa was born in Alaska, I think in Ketchikan. Alise ended up being raised by her father amd his actual wife. My grandma was very close with her father.....apparently he was in love with Betty who was french I believe....any help will be greatly appreciated...

Hi Sandstrom,

I found the Erickson/Carroll Family Tree, trees.ancestry.com/tree/26511172/person/12114966076 which contains your Erickson family. Most larger libraries offer free access to Ancestry.

Bror's (Bror Laurentius Widholm) Erickson's death date and location is blank but I thought you might want to contact the owner.

I searched for Bror and Minnie's death information in Alaska and Washington states but didn't find anything. Some folks living in Alaska move to Washington state to complete the end of their lives in an easier climate.

Part of the record challenge is that Alaska doesn't release death info until 50 years after the event.

Here's some other possible sources:

Tongass Historical Society, 629 Dock St., Ketchikan, AK 99901-6529, 907-225-5600.

Alaska State Archives, archives.state.ak.us/genealogy/genealogy.html, Probate Index 1883-1960.
Successful Searching!

I tried to check indexes of cemeteries in Ketchikan but there aren't any available on-line.

Delmar York married my great grandmother Margaret Catherine Strobel (born in 1908). They had a daughter, Patricia. From the stories I've been told, they owned a cafe/restaurant called the Delmar in Ketchikan. We have pictures of it.

Margaret was married to Thomas Raymond Curtis prior to marrying Del. She had two children: Thomas Curtis Jr and my grandmother, Margaret Geraldine Curtis.
(Carl) Waldemar Nielsen, b. jun 3rd 1894

Hi

I am hoping someone here can help me in my quest to find Carl Waldemar Nielsen, born in Denmark June 3rd 1894.+

I have just received a copy of his "Alien Registration Form", which he filled out Dec 27th 1940. There he says that he is living at "Clover Pass" Ketchikan, Alaska - and in a comment he says he is living at the "northerly end of Clover Pass highway".

It's a bit hard to read what he puts down as his present occupation, but I think it says Cook/Baker. But he does not supply any name for his employer. He says he's single and has no children. But he had a daughter in Canada, and another daugther in Iceland which was my wife's grandmother. So we are very interested to hear what he was up to and what happened to him.

Any suggestions where I could look for him?

Re: John Gigler

This is your first posting on the Rootsweb message boards (at least under this user name). You did a good job posting the needed information about your person. It would have also helped to identify your GGGrandfather's brothers name and information. "If" he was a tailor in occupation, that may have identified a different John than the one in Alaska. This also may have lead to others posting family trees or other sources of information that may have identified the sought person John with locations or family. Bottom line, just to many to prove/disprove any being correct.

Research:

With the exception of the 1900 Census that you identified as being the correct person, there are other John Gigler that have potential throughout the country. I also checked Canadian resources.

The 1900 Census for Ketchikan, Southern Supervisors District, AK, enumerated March 15, 1900.
John Gigler, located in AK: Mar 1898; address of home: New York, NY, born Dec 1866, born in Hungary to both parents born in Hungary, immigrated 1885/status: "Na"(naturalized. He was a Groceryman at home, mining in AK.
--He was a partner with a Frank Fredricko(Fredrisko?), also from NY. His DOB was Oct 1863 but shown as 26.

The 1910 Census for Township 16, Kern County, CA, enumerated 13 June
John Gigler(transcribed as Jigler), age 44(1865/1866), born in Hungary, immigrated 1891/Na, Miner/Gold, working on Own Account versus worker for others as were so many of the others listed. Living as a boarder in a boarding house headed by Mike Casey, 32, Canadian, waiter in the house.
--Bit of a difference in year of immigration between this person and the one in 1900, and the one in 1920. But the year it often wrong, depending on who provided info. "Sometimes" that year was the year of naturalization, as given by the person.

A family tree: "Creighton - Clouatre Ancestors" has a Leona May Cuttler, spouse: "John Giglir." Access was not available, either a glitch or the owner had removed the family tree from the posted Public Trees.
--The 1900 and 1910 Census show a Mary Cutler/Cuttler, born Mar 1896 in Montana, dau of David. In Deer Lodge Co, 1910.
Another family tree shows this Mary born 1896, married to a James Hotchkiss. This marriage may have come after the Gigler, or it is the wrong person.
There is not enough information on this/these person(s). I wouldn't pay for the marriage certificate research. I'd try other avenues first. I would not pay for Alaska research.

----The John B. Gigler and wife Theresa--------
Also in 1900:
John B Gigler, born Nov 1966, born in Germany, immigrated 1888, a tailor, married to Teresa. Living with him was his brother, John E. Gigler, a tailor, born Dec 1879, immigrated 1892.

The 1910 Census for West Deptford, Gloucester, NJ, 27 April.
John Gigler, 42(1867/1868), born in Germany, immigrated 1893, hired man/farm laborer ("Possibly" the John B, married to Theresa).
--I think this person has "potential" to be the correct one, but is NOT proven. After WWI, the Austro-Hungary empire was reduced to ...nothing. In 1919, the Communist party took over the government and created the Hungarian Soviet Republic. In 1920, the Treaty of Trianon was signed, about one third of the ethnic Hungarian population became citizens of other countries. So, the question: "IF" this is the correct person, was HE, himself, enumerated, or was his information provided by his employer, Benjamin Lodge? MANY people in the census had their information provided by others. "IF" this is the correct person, did HE identify himself as a German versus Hungarian due to political, social reasons? I have seen this, thus, this person is shown, until proven/disproven.

The US Naturalization Index:
John B. Gigler, naturalized US District Court, August 17, 1897, address: 1525 2nd Ave, NY, occupation: Tailor. Born Sept 21, 1866, nationality: German. Arrived New York, June 20, 1888.
--This person also has potential, but could be the person in the 1920 census, or neither could be the correct person.

Obit, New York,
Gigler, Oct 10, 1936, John E., husband of Therese Gigler, 69, North 9th St, Newark, services at Charles J. Guenther's home of Repose, Interment St. Michael's Cemetery, Long Island. (Therese died 7/25, 1939, age 70(1866).
hi,
I searched for John in Alaska in Ancestry and FamilySearch but didn't find anything.

However, I did find a "John Gigler and Miss Leona Cuttler were married by Judge Pringle yesterday at the residence of C. H. McRoberts, 809 E. Park Ave. Both have a large circle of friends who wish them joy." Source: "The Anaconda Standard", Anaconda, Deer Lodge, Montana, published Nov 20, 1912.

Of course I don't know if he was your John or not. You can find more information about the marriage by ordering a copy of their marriage license from Deer Lodge County Recorder, anacondadeerlodge.mt.gov/departments/clerk_recorder.aspx.
The Recording Clerk can be reached at 406-563-4061.

If you want to pursue any additional info about his time in Ketchikan, contact the Genealogical Society of Southeast Alaska, PO Box 6313, Ketchikan, AK 99901. John Schuette Across Sea is Dead Hans Hanson, former Manitowoc man and a son of Jasper Hanson, Manitowoc's pioneer ship builder, died in Alaska December 6, according to word received from his brother, W. M. Hanson. The funeral was held at Ketchikan, Alaska, under the auspices of the local Igloo of the Pioneers of Alaska of which deceased was a member. Mr. Hanson was about seventy-five years of age when he was called to his final rest and only the old residents here will recollect him. He was a sailor on the lakes and when the Schooner John Schuette was taken to the ocean he was a member of the crew. On the first trip across Brooks, a captain from Racine, was in command with a man by the name of Johnson from this city as navigator. After the return to this country Brooks and Johnson both left the craft to return to their home and Hanson continued to sail the boat for many trips, making one trip to Gloucester with turpentine and another trip to London with rosin. Later he drifted to Alaska and it was there he was overtaken in his cabin near Niblack by a stroke of paralysis. He was discovered by a neighbor and rushed to the hospital at Ketchikan but died the next day. He is survived by two sisters and a brother, Mrs. Elizabeth Gregg of Anaheim, California and another sister whose name is not known here and the brother, W. M. Hanson at Butte, Montana. Mr. Hanson was never married. Manitowoc Herald News, pg. 1, 12-16-1927

I am not related, but love genealogy research, this is what I found - hope this helps...

Thanks for your reply. I found a posting that was put online by Mary Semple's son a long time back. It led me to Surprise, Arizona. I called information and got a phone number of Mary's grandaughter. Mary's son had passed which is when his postings stopped. I called and spoke to his widow who was Mary's daughter in law. The son and Mary his mother are both buried in Ketchikan. What a find! We keep in touch now and traded family photos. She had pictures of my gt gt grandparents that our family had never seen. She had pictures of Mary as a child and her parents. Mary's father was my gt grandmother's brother so it was great to get pictures of him and his family. We had pictures and info that they didn't know. Ancestry is great in connecting families! You are right Ketchikan was very helpful and I did talk to Katy. She wanted me to let her know what I found and I called her back after our families made the connection. She was thrilled for us to find each other. Thanks again for your help.

Hi I would suggest go into the City of Ketchikan website and go under the city clerk and click on Katy Suiter to send an email with all the dates to see if she if her burial is here in Ketchikan.. She was very helpful when I found out that I had found out that I had family here.. If she is, you can go into the State of Alaska vital and you can order her death cert. It will cost you 20.00 to do that.... Good Luck

Would anyone know if there are records for anyone buried in the poor section of one of the Ketchikan Cemetaries? I am looking for information on Matthew (Mathias) Schwall. He may be buried in the Ketchikan cemetary, maybe in the "potter's field" (poor section). He may also have been known as Matthew Rice. Born in 1887, not sure of date of death, might be in the mid 1940's. Is there anyway to check the cemetary records? I was told he moved to Ketchikan to avoid the draft. Not sure what year that was. Trying to find out any other information on him.
Hi - what kind of resources are there for Ketchikan in the 1930s? I suspect that my question might best be answered by city directory type resources.

Cecil James McLellan was in Ketchikan before 14 Aug 1933, and in Seattle in a tuberculosis sanitorium by 1941. He had a wife "Grace" that he might have married in Alaska - little is known about her.

I have his business card in Ketchikan for his company called "Five - Eight - Taxi". The phone number was "58", and his name at the bottom says "C. J. (Mac) McLellan".

Can anyone help with where the business was located, and any info about Grace?

Thanks!

Nick

In the early 1970's, Fred Brown was shot during a robbery by Richard "Happy" Borchardt. Fred had a sister named Carol or Cathy Brown. I ran into an old Ketchikan resident who went to school with them. He said Carol (or Cathy) went into the military following graduation. After getting out of the military, she moved back to Alaska and wound up in the Juneau area. He did not know if she married or what her last name migh be now. Sorry I don't have more for you.

Thank you for your reply. I am afraid I do not know anything about my biological parents. I have blonde naturally curly hair, blue/grey eyes, and am 5' 9", slight taller than the average woman. I am slender in build and I think there must be some very strong genes in my lineage as all five of my kids, 3 boys and 2 girls, look just like me except for the 2 oldest boys have very dark brown/black hair. None of us have any allergies, wear glasses or have any medical problems as of yet (except I'm getting old!). A couple of the kids have had to have braces on thier teeth. It is the heritage of my side of the family that is our biggest interest. I do thank you for responding and I will continue to search.

Hi Daniel,
I, too was born in Ketcikan General Hospital but 20 years earlier and in the old hospital on Bawdin Street. My son was born in the same hospital as you 1964. Since you & my son were born within a few years of each other, I was trying to remember if any of my girlfriends were pregnant at that time, but I lived out on Prince of Wales Island & I take it your biological parents were in Ketchikan. Do you know the ethnic background of either? Or physical description, ie: tall, short, blonde, brunette, blue or hazel eyes, etc?

The old & new hospitals are run by the SISTERS OF ST. JOSEPH OF PEACE - hosital now know as PEACEHEALTH - if you "google" PEACEHEALTH or KTN GENERAL HOSPITAL it should take you to their site(s) where you may email them with you request.

You might try the archives of the Ktn. Daily News, I recall they used to have birth/marriage/death announcements, just look for the 1961 time-frame.

Hope this helps, good luck in your search,
Betty (Hamilton) Marker
retired in Chapala, Jalisco, Mexico

I was born september 25, 1961 at Ketchican Genral Hospital. As the story my adoptive parents(now deceased)told went, my birth mother was a single parent who did not want me and eventually abandoned me in her home at 5 months of age. The authorities(the police?) took me away and took my birth mother to court where she indicated that she didn't want me and that she did not know what to do with me. She gave up her parental rights and I was placed at the Albertina Kerr orphanage in Portland Oregon(I guess there was no orphanage in Ketchican or possibly Alaska then?). I was adopted in 1964 to Charles Purdy Marvel and Eleanor May McGibbon Marvel who lived in Olex Oregon on a large ranch. Not to long after I arrived at the Marvel home, my biological father attempted to reach me and get me back but a court battle insued and my biological father was not successful. I am searching for anyone who may have any idea who my birth parents may have been or how I may go about finding their names. I have no intention of disturbing anyone's life in any way, I just want to let my 5 children know a little more about thier heritage. I have contacted the hospital and they have no records dating back this far. The orphanage has records but they are sealed, as was the case in most closed case adoptions of the time. Alaska vital stats is trying to find original birth certificate but no success yet. I do have the Dr's name and a nurse on the birth certificate a I have. Any help anyone has would be great. Thank you.
