to Jeanne050 - Do you have the names of the nine children of Ivan Pavloff and Malanka? I am researching a family with a very similar oral tradition and wonder if perhaps Irinia "Ellen" named her daughter, Axinia, after a sister. Any information you have would be helpful. Thank you.

Hi Russ,
Ah. . . Never give up. Every day more information is being loaded or entered into databases; sometimes they are on-line and sometime they're at a genealogical society, etc. In fact the 1940 Census will be available to the public in two months but won't be indexed until about the end of this year.

In 1920 the Jimmy family was living in District 104, Nulato, 4th Judicial District, Alaska Territory.
George Jimmy, head household, In, 35 b. AK, carpenter.
Mrs. Geo., In, b. AK, 23.
Laurence, In, b. AK, 4 2/12ths.
Bertha, In, b. AK, 3/ 4/12ths.
Dorothy, In, b. AK 2/12ths.

In 1930 they were living in the same place.
George Jimmie, In, b. AK, 36, Athapaskan Tenm [Athapaskan is an Indian tribe in Alaska], trapper fur business.
Rebecca, wife, In, B. AK, Athapaskan, housework own house.
Laurence, In, b. AK, 15.
Birtha, In, b. AK, 3.
Clare, In, b. AK 2 10/12ths.

The Captian Family Tree, trees.ancestry.com/tree/10288412/person/-651091681 contains the Jimmy/Jimmie family. I mention this because I thought you might want to contact the owner.

They had the same death date for Bertha/Birtha Jimmie/Jimmy Kennedy King. She's buried at Birch Hill Cemetery, Fairbanks, Fairbanks North Star Burough.
Source: findagrave.com

The person who put her info on FindaGrave MIGHT be willing to copy her obituary.

The Fairbanks Genealogical Society, http://fairbanksgenealogicalsociety.com/requests.html
does research and might have her divorce date from Kennedy and marriage date for King.

You made MY day with your reply! Successful Searching!

Gilbert Jean Andrews was born July 20, 1922 in Koyukuk, Alaska to Mary Cherosky (aka Sherosky) Andrews. Father Beu signed the baptismal papers. Gil was Mary’s sixth of seven boys. The first five had drowned in the Koyukuk River. The seventh boy, Edward was born in 1924. The two boys were orphaned in 1929 when Mary passed away.

Gil went to live with John and Lisa Petockney for two years. John and Lisa identify Gilbert as their 8 year old son along with Edgar age 9 and daughter Ruth, age 6 months in the 1930 Census of Koyukuk Village.

Edward was adopted by Andrew Pitka and 2nd wife Agnes. Edward was identified as a step-son, age 6, along with daughters Katherine, 15, Virginia, 11, Letvina, 4 ½ and Annie, 3 months in the 1930 Census for Koyukuk Village.

The Census was taken in March of 1930 by the Government teacher, Miss Ruby Wilson. There were 28 families living there at that time. At one point during the summer John and Lisa were told to have Gil ready for school in August of 1931. Edward too was supposed to go to school but he hid when the boat arrived that fall. The steamer “General Jacobs” picked Gil up in Koyukuk and he was taken to the Eklutna Industrial School in Eklutna until graduation in 1940.

Gil began work for the Alaska Railroad after graduation. He worked on the building of the Portage Tunnel near Portage Glacier. He also worked the complete railroad line from Seward to Fairbanks.

While in Fairbanks Gil was able to visit with his maternal grandmother Irinia “Ellen” Pavloff Cherosky Callahan and his Aunt Helen Cherosky Callahan. Pavloff is also seen as Pavlov. The Pavlov spelling is identified with Ivan Pavlov, manager of the Russian-American company outpost in Nulato on the Yukon River. He was there from 1865 to 1868. He married a local Athabaskan woman and left nine children. Irinia was born in 1867. The Cheroski, Siroski, Sherosky and other spelling around the Yukon River area are considered Russian surnames.

I contacted the Division of Statewide Services, Alaska Department of Public Safety, and the Criminal History Support - Washington State. Washington State doesn't have records that far back and here's what the Alaska Public Safety dept. had to say: "Our agency doesn’t have any records from before statehood (1959), and owing to the state’s strict confidentiality laws regarding criminal records, I probably couldn’t release them to you if we did have them. (But just to be clear, there’s no chance we’d have anything from 1912.)"

Seems strange that a US District Ct. case file wouldn't still exist somewhere. Ideas accepted readily.

Hi Jeanne,
I think we may be researching the same family. I have come across John & Catherine Sheroski in Nulato in the 1930 census, with children Simon and Josephine. Also, in 1920 in Kaltag (near Nulato) are John & Catherine, Martha (married to Eugene Negolas) (may be a spelling of Nickolas), along with Simon, Josephine and a widow named Olga Hawtun or Kawtun. I will see if I can find Mary, but most of these census pages are very difficult to read.

I would love to know more about this family and how you learned what you already know about her.

I'll see what I can find out about Edward Pitka.

State Court records in Alaska are open to the public. Not sure about Federal Court records.

You might contact the Anchorage, Alaska branch of the National Archives & Records Administration to see if they have records of McNeil Island that far back, although the penetentiary is in Washington State. The NARA could help you locate records if they exist.

NARA in Anchorage may also have old federal court records.

Who did you contact about court records?

Recently discovered that one of my great grandmother's brothers, Thomas Curtin, was convicted of larceny in the US District Ct in Iditarod and sentenced on 8/10/1912 to McNeil Island Penitentiary, Washington for two years.

My mother had related a story from her childhood of walking on the streets of Seattle with her mother, who upon seeing a man on the sidewalk in front of them, quickly crossed the street to avoid him. She had been told that it was one of my grandmother's uncles and a bad sort. Now I think I've discovered who that uncle was.

I would like to learn more of the details of this court case since it appears to have happened at the end of the gold rush and I wonder if Thomas was involved in some dealings regarding mining.

I've written the McNeil Pen folks and they don't have records that far back. The courts in Alaska have privacy issues and state that they probably don't have those records anyway. Anybody have any ideas about how to find out more?

Alexander Black - Tanana, Alaska

Searching for information on Alexander Black. I believe he was born around 1870 in England. He was in Tanana, Alaska during the time period of (at least) 1897 to 1911, probably as a miner. He was married to an Anna Dolan (born in CA). The marriage produced five children:

Doris Martha (1897, California)
Alexander (1900-1905, California)
Winston H. (1903, California)
Byron Harper (1904, Tanana Alaska)
Muriel (1906, Tanana Alaska)

I believe around 1907 or 1908 Anna returned to reside in California without Alexander. Family notes indicate the living four children were split up among family members (possibly because she could not care for all four). It's possible they returned because Byron accidentally set fire to the family home.

I am in possession of two postcards addressed to Alexander Black, Tanana, Yukon River, Alaska from his son Byron. They are postmarked December 1908 and February 1911.

Another hand written family note indicates: Alexander Black, Herb Faulkner and William Hathaway > Klondike 1897. These were extended family members. It's unclear when Anna initially went to Alaska (with or after her husband).

I am unsure of Winson's middle name, however it could be the same as Byron's: Harper. I am curious as to where the name Harper came from as I've researched Tanana and found there was a Harper's Station. I wonder if Alexander was an aquaintance of Harper at Harper's Station.

Alexander Black would have returned to California at some point, I believe not just a vacation trip, but to reside. A family photo shows an older man with a long white beard in a suit at a family event with his grandkids and the back of the photo indicates "Grandpa Black."

Any information would be helpful...Thank you. Lucky.Cookie@yahoo.com

Hmmm... I found this very interesting. I married into the Shirosky name and to my knowledge, the name was "made up" because when the "Shirosky's" migrated to the U.S./Canada, a teacher could not pronounce the correct name, therefore, gave them the Shirosky name. I have been told that if there is a Shirosky out there, we are all related because of this. Yet, I have never heard of the people you are inquiring about.

Abraham L. Lamb, his wife Estella Howard Lamb, and their children Ella, Bertha and Armine lived in Dawson Alaska sometime between 1887 and 1910. Estella's brothers or uncles named Howard were also there. I obtained this information through obituaries. They may have had a child who was born or died there. I need advice about how to search for records in that wild territory. Would Dawson have had a newspaper, directories, etc? If anyone out there has searched for ancestors in Dawson, I would be grateful for any help.

Hi

Hi

Charles J Lelievre mined with my Grandfather Frank Williams in the Duncan Creek area in 1901. I have found several references to him. From the book Galena and Gold "Williams Creek, a tributary of Duncan Creek, was staked by Frank Williams, Frank Cantin, C.J. Lelievre, D Parent and O Letourneau. During the first week in March, 1903, the miners on Duncan and Williams Creek contested the baseline survey done on those creeks by Raoul Rinfret of the Dominion Land Survey. the Duncan Creek petitioners wrote in their complaint that according to said survey, many of us are thrown out of ground which we legitimately staked and recorded. Rinfret's survey was indeed in error and the survey was redone" The above mentioned book was published by the Mayo Historical Society.

Hi Mark:

Sorry it took so long to get back to you.Got a little more info.I don't know of any siblings that my uncle(Charles J.Lelievre)had.

Did find one thing you likely know about. My aunt made a note that Clara and Coras Father,CHARLES PETER SLOGGY, served in the civil war.My aunt made a note that my uncle had his discharge papers.

I did find a record for a PETER SLOGGY as a civil war soldier from Wisconsin.Does that sound right?

I'd be happy for any info you could provide on the Sloggys.

My email- ginny_holl@hotmail.com

If I have your email address,I could send you the page with Peter Sloggys civil war record, if you don't already have it

Regards, Ginny
hi Mark

I think the Lelievre you are looking for (could you have the spellling wrong?)may be a shirt-tail relative of mine.My roots are in the Yukon. My aunt, Alice Burkhard, was married to Charles J. Lelievre in Dawson. I think his parents were Clara Sloggy and Charles Lelievre, could find out for sure.I am just beginning research on my Yukon family.I was actually born and raised in Dawson, and still have family there.

Hi Mark

Indeed, we are shirt-tail relatives.Joseph Charles Lelievre married Claire Sloggy in 1908.They were later divorced.Joseph Charles died in 1963.

The relative we have in common is Charles Joseph Lelievre(Joseph Charles and Claras son)..He was born in Mayo.He was known as "Bunny" for most of his life.

He was married to my Aunt, Alice Burkhard in Dawson City.

Uncle Bunny died in 1992? and my Aunt Alice died last year.

They had six children, Vivian, Arlene, Judy, Frank (died in
1975), Karen, and Alan..

Cora Sloggy was married to Bliss Kelley. The Kelley in Bear Creek you are looking for?

I will try to get more info if you like.

Regards, Ginny
Hi cousin!! We've been trying to track down this side of the family for a number of years. Cora Sloggy was my g-grandmother. Her first husband was Maitland Davenport, hence my last name. Any info you can find out regarding Clara (ie: where and when of wedding, did they have more than one child, did they move back to Seattle, do you know if she remarried, etc) would be helpful. I'm especially looking for info that will lead to specific research in the various archives. If you want to start any research into the Sloggy part of your family, let me know. There are a number of people looking into them and we have accumulated quite a bit of data. Thanks again, Mark

Mary Andrews

Mary Andrews was born near Koyukuk or Nulato. Sometimes she was called "Big Mary" because she was tall. Mary was the mother of seven boys. The first five somehow drowned in the Koyukuk River. Gil Andrews and Edward Pitka were the only two remaining. Mary died when Gil was 7 and Edward was 4 about 1929. I would like to find out more about the drowning deaths of her first 5 children and her maiden name of Sirosky or Shirosky. Thank you, Jeanne
