AZ, Pima Co.Irene: I looked for undersheriffs and deputies at about that time and could
not find him. I could only look in the newspaper as I can find no list of
these people's names. I found that the founder of Tempe, AZ (suburb of
Phoenix) Charles Trumbull Hayden came from Connecticut. He was in Tucson in
1858 and married in 1876 at which time he went to Tempe and founded Hayden's
Ferry which became the city of Tempe. He had one son who had no children
and 3 daughters. One named Mary C. was divorced and took her maiden name
back. Her children were listed in the newspaper as Hayden C. and Larry D.
Hayden so they took her maiden name too. However, this looks like it would
not fit your Clarice as she would have been about 11 years old when Horace
was born. I check all city directories in SE AZ at this time and could find
no Drexel listed. Maybe the Arizona Archives in Phoenix might have the
names of undersheriffs, deputy sheriffs, city police and US Marshals. It
would not be the least bit unusual for one of them to be called sheriff,
even when they actually were not. The nearest seaports to Tucson are San
Diego, California USA and Guaymas, Mexico although Monterey, Mexico is not
too far away either. I am sorry I could not find anything to help you.
