I'm trying to locate birth records for my grandma, Guadalupe Garcia b. 1907 Ajo. Arizona has no records for her at all from 1900 to 1909. Where do I search since Arizona was part of New Mexico at that time? County is unknown to me. Her mother was Esperanza Quiroz(Garcia), father was Francisco Loretto Garcia. Any direction would be appreciated. Thank you. Loretta
Hi Loretta
I am the current president of the Ajo Historical Society. It is quite possible that your grandmother was born at home in 1907 in Ajo as there was no hospital in Ajo then. Many Hispanics did not bother to register the birth of the child until the early 1930's when many were deported for being non-citizens during the Depression. It was then that affidavits were needed to establish proof of citizenship for those born years earlier. As for possible sources: The Catholic Diocese of Tucson covered the entire Arizona Territory back in 1907 well up until the early 1960's when the Diocese of Phoenix was created. Ajo baptisimal records would be sent to the Diocese of Tucson. Another source since your relative crossed the border back and forth is to search for border crossing records. Permission was needed to cross and they are on microfilm. I do not have access to them here in Ajo but have seen copies of them by a Tucson researcher. They exist well into the 1920's and earlier. Ajo had a border agent. The road to Lukeville was poor then so the agent made his home and office in Ajo and did entry work in Ajo.
Good luck

Are you connected to this family; I hope so?

*Faithful Letitia Shields married Simon Carroll Matthews in Matthewsville, AZ in 1888.
Thirteen children followed, all born in Graham Co. AZ.
They had 7 children born either in Graham Co / Bowie, Cochise, AZ / Yavapai, AZ.

Whilst I have managed to locate (where available) on-line copies of death certificates and photos of their graves, I seek more family type information as my husband is distantly related to ELIZA ELIZABETH HOWARD SHIELDS.

Looking forward to your reply.
There are birth certificates for at least three of these children (Erinoes J and Rose M), Ismael is Ferrusca, available in California. I suspect they have to be ordered by the child him or herself.

If you have access to Ancestry.com, you can look them up using Quinones and Smith for the parents.

The birth certificates may give you additional information, such as the birthplace of the parents. And, the fathers' names. Or at least what the mother said the fathers' names are.

Presumably one of these children is looking for birth parents? At least this is a start.

Birth Mother Irene Smith

Am looking for an Irene Smith who gave birth to approx four children in the 1970's, three of whom I know were born in Bakersfield, California. There were two girls and two boys. The oldest girl was named Julia/Julie, second child was Irenio Juan Quinones, third child Ismael Jesus Farusca, and the fourth child was Rose Marie/Mary Quinones. The oldest child Julie was kept by her biological father from what we were told. The other three children were all adopted by one family by 1976/77. The father to two of the children was possibly Alfred or Alfredo Quinones but we are not sure there is also a possibility that he was in the service and could have been from NY or NJ and of Puerto Rican decent. The mother Irene was possibly of Hispanic and Native American(Navajo)decent and from what we understand she was adopted by a family in California from a reservation in Arizona.

Thank you in advance for your time
Johanna Labiosa
I came across your post the other day, and although it is 9 years old apparently, I would love whatever information I could get. I have hit some dead ends on searching my grandfather's family. He passed away last year on Aug. 31, 2007. His name was Arthur Earl Reifel. He married my grandmother Gladys Marie Chapman (still living) on June 2nd, 1945. They were were missionaries overseas for 42 years. His father's name was Arthur William Reifel. I have a little more information, but not much. Any information would be muchly appreciated.

His parents were John B. Quigley and Harriet Amon. I just discovered a death certificate last night from Phoenix Arizona, May 9, 1914, for his brother John Thomas and Leo P. Quigley furnished information for that certificate. So, the family story that Leo went to Arizona rings true, however, no other info is available.
Thank you for the Philadelphia Quigley info, but I have checked that family several times and cannot find a relationship.
Do you know, if Leo married a Native American woman and died on the reservation about 1915, would his death be recorded in Arizona state documents?
Joan

Leo Quigley, born April 1888 in Luzerne County PA. Last known to be in Pittsburgh PA in the 1910 census. Family stories tell that he went west, probably to Arizona. Believed to have T.B. Supposedly he married a Native American woman, had one child, a girl, and then he died. He does not appear in any WW I draft registration or any other census nationwide. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Desperately seeking descendants.
joanieqb

Thank you very much for the information. I have tracked them down with some help from other people too. The 2 children that you have listed as Rose's children(Christopher William Coole & Kelly Deronda Coole) are actually Candy's. It turns out that she decided she didn't want to raise her children after she got a divorce from her husband. They also had a 3rd child that Candy put in a mental hospital because she was mentally handicapped. The last email that I recieved from Candy(about 2 yrs ago) stated that Candy lived with Rose still in Arkansas. Candy is raising her granddaughter Athena that is actually the mentally handicapped childs. She did email me with a picture of our father holding me as an infant, picture of our parents wedding day with parents from both side of the family and a picture of Candy, Rose, and Athena. Candy emailed me a few times then stopped. The emails were over a couple of months but Rose never wanted to talk to me. I did send them pictures of me and my children. Once again I would like to thank everyone in their effort.
