His son was James Alexander Owens, born Nov. 5, 1836. His daughter was Mary Ella Owens; her son was Richard Harris Howell, Jr. (my g.father); his son is Richard Harris Howell, III (my dad). I am also descended from the Paynes, Spotswoods, & Dandridges. I have been looking for Ezekial's parents for years. My cousin was the head librarian of Clayton Genealogical Library and she couldn't find them. I am determined, but getting a little frustrated at the complete wall on him. Considering Adelia P. Payne's family was so noted, I would have thought something had been found on him by now. Thanks for emailing me back so quickly! Look forward to hearing from you again. CHM

Ezekial Brooke Owens and Adelia Pendleton Payne were my great, great, great grandparents. I cannot find out who Ezekial's father or mother were. We have something that says his father may have possibly been named Hunter, and that he fought in the Revolutionary War and died of an accidental gunshot wound in North Carolina. Do you have any information on Ezekial's father and/or mother?

I recently found my family members in Drew County per the 1910 census. They were listed in Veasey Township. Can anyone tell me which areas/communities are part of this area? No luck finding anything current about Veasey -- and they were renters, not land owners, so no help from court or land sale data.

Thanks!

I did not find anything in the 1911 census but I did find several Womble/Wamble listings in the Index to Arkansas Confederate Soldiers, Vol. III, P-Z. The ???/??? denotes rank in and rank out. The parentheses are used to distinguish between the names.

WAMBLE
(Allen, Co. H; 15 Ark. Militia; 1Lt/1Lt)
(Allen, Co. I; 35 Ark Inf; Sgt/Sgt)
(Elija R, Co. G; 37 Ark. Inf; Pvt/Pvt)
(J. M., Co. F; 1 Ark. Mtd. Rifles; Pvt/Cpl)
(L. C., Co. H; 19 (Dockery's) Ark Inf; Pvt/Cpl)
(S.
There is no James David Richardson in the book. The other Richardsons listed are:

Henry Francis, b. 1845
James Mikiel, b. 1840
William H, b. 1847

Please let me know if you would like to have the information about any of them. This census was taken in 1912 and it is possible James David was deceased by this time. There were also 31 counties where the census was not recorded.

Cathy

I believe I'm the one who started the trend on ancestry.com of tying Elizabeth Jane Cotham to James House. It's a good guess -- the best one available -- but I'm not 100% certain it's correct.

I have a copy of the death certificate for Minnie House, your Alice's sister and my second great-grandmother, and it says that her father's name was James Carroll House. Most of her census documents say that he was from Arkansas. She herself, however, was born in Calhoun County, Mississippi, rather than in Arkansas, according to the census; still, our branch of the Cothams, whose tree I filled out, and feel more confident about, a couple years ago, seems to have gone back and forth between Arkansas and Mississippi, so perhaps House moved out there with Elizabeth for a time. It's clear that Elizabeth and the children wound up back in Arkansas later on.

The census documents show Clarissa's sons to be a James M. and a Carroll (whose first name appears to have been William). But Minnie's death certificate lists her father as James Carroll, and she her husband, James Newton, named one of their sons James Carroll, so the "M." is probably a mistake.

Clarissa does seem like an interesting character, and one with a hard life. It couldn't have been fun to be a woman living alone with several children in a boarding house even before the Civil War. If your information about her marriage to Lewis is correct, you know more about her than I do! I'll keep digging, and please let me know if you learn anything else.

Meanwhile, I have a photo of Minnie in my tree, and it's public, if you're interested.
Newtons? Also, House-Cotham inquiry.

I'm trying to trace my ancestor, James A. Newton, who was, according to my grandmother, born November 7, 1862, in the Springhill area of Drew County. My Mississippi family was always a little cagey about our Newton ancestry.

James A. Newton and Minnie Ann House, who were said to have married in Bearhouse and later moved to Drew, Mississippi, are my great-great grandparents. Their son, William Houston Newton, was my great-grandfather. James A. Newton is buried in the Sandy Bayou Cemetery, otherwise known and the "Yellow Fever Cemetery," near Drew. He died in 1904.

Notes that my mother transcribed based on my paternal grandmother's memory suggest that James A. Newton's mother, Sarah Hale, married a David Newton in Monticello. The notes are sketchy and just jotted down quickly, however. If there was a David who was the right age to be James A.'s father and was living in the area at the time of James A.'s birth in late 1862, I can't find him in the census.

Early Drew County settler Jesse Newton had a son named David. He enlisted in the First Arkansas infantry, but was not seen after 1962 and thus was presumed dead. (Jesse Newton himself died in 1865.)

There are records of a marriage between a Sarah Hail and James Newton, so I think this must be the marriage to which my grandmother was referring. Sarah and James had a son named David in 1859 and could very well have had a second son, James, in 1862. Yet at the time of the 1870 census, I can't find any sign of any of them.

While there is nothing directly tying James A. Newton -- my great-great grandfather -- to the earlier James Newton, for now this is my best guess.

(I should mention that a James and David are living in 1870 with a Caroline Newton -- all are listed as black. This is not Jesse Newton's daughter Caroline Newton, who married Matthew King in 1850 and was living in the area with several children of her own, but based on the similarity of names there may very well be a connection between the families. This James was born in 1867, however, while James A. was born in 1862.)

I'm also interested in the House who married Elizabeth Jane Cotham, daughter of Stephen Cotham and Sallie Bennett. Does anyone know anything about Clarissa House? It seems she may have been separated from her husband and raising her boys, including a James C., alone. In 1880 Elizabeth Jane House is living in Drew with four children -- Alice, Lula, Minnie, and James.

If anyone has any information about any of these families, I would be most interested. Many thanks.

Does anyone familiar with Drew County know if there is/was a community called Oak Ridge? I see there's a high school and cemetery with this name, but could it have been a community in the 1900-1910 time frame?

I ask because my family's oral tradition is that my great-grandfather died in Oak Ridge, LA. But we've just located a census record showing his widow and family in Drew County -- and maybe the death occurred in Arkansas.

Any help would be appreciated!

I have been trying to info on William C Kilgore. The 1900 Census states he was in living in Louisiana with his wife Ida Mae Dempsey and there children. The 1910 puts him in Arkansas. He was born between 1863-1870 is my guess. He states that he & both parents were born in Tennesse. He was married around 1896 location unknown. I am assuming he died between 1914-1920. I found his wife and children in Arkansas 1920 Census, shows her as widow and their last child was born in 1913. That is how I figured his possible death year. Any thread at all would sure be appreciated. I found May in th 1930's Census in Arkansas as well. She died there in 1939. her youngeat child was John D. Kilgore.

No, fortunately I am not William R. Spence the III. I know a few people who are so-and-so the III. They were usually jerks. My Grandmother was not Mrs. Evalyn Haynes.

My hobby is studying American Colonial History. Marriage at the age of 15 does not surprise me. Look at a dollar coin with a picture of Sacajawea holding her son "Pomp." She lead the Lewis & Clark Expedition and had this child on the trail. She was 14.

My grandfather did die in an accident - a logging accident in Arkansas. Me thinks we are a different William Spence.

Be safe.

She is my husband, Michael's, Grandmother. Her first marriage was to Austin Glen White at only 15 years of age. They had a son, Austin Jr. who is Michael's father. Austin Sr. was killed before his son's birth. He was a fireman in Urbana and was hit by a train at only 22 yrs. of age.

In my records, I show Evalyn and William divorced, and then she married Charles Middaugh. Am I on the right track, or are you a different William Spence? Thanks for your help.

Susan,
There are a William R. Spence Sr. and Jr. descended from this Francis Marion Spence. Perhaps Kevin Spence (also in this conversation) may be able to shed more light.

The dates don't seem right, though, for this William R. to be descended from this Francis Marion Spence. There were other "Francis Marion Spence" and many more "Francis Marion ...". They were named after Francis Marion, a Revolutionary War hero.

The Francis Marion Spence mentioned here died in the early 1920s, and William R. Spence (Sr) was a very young child.

- John

Evalyn Haynes was married to Austin Glen White, who died after being hit by a train, in 1920. His wife, Evalyn, gave birth to their son, Austin Glen White, Jr. in June of 1921. Any connection?
Hi Martha -

I do have some information on Gladys Hilburn (not Hawkins), Francis Marion Spence's 2nd wife. Kevin is a direct descendant of Gladys, though. If you don't hear from Kevin on this, let me know and I will send what I have on her (parents, residence pre-marriage in Shelby County TN, 2nd marrage, children, etc).

May God bless you and yours, too!

John Spence

Hello cousin Martha!

We've not seen each other since my time in New Orleans, but then you -- and the rest of the family -- knew me as Steve (rather than John). That was certtainly a long time ago.

As I'm able to do so, I'll be pleased to share information on Francis Marion's 2nd wife and family as well as on the rest of our Spence line. Just last year, I met a cousin of ours -- a niece of Francis Marion -- Peggy Jean Spence, of Illinois. I've also met some of Glady's descendants.

Please contact me at my direct e-mail address of "spence539-at-hotmail.com".

John

Hi Mr. Spence,
Francis Marion Spence of Gossett, White County, IL, is my great-grandfather, also. I am the granddaughter of his son, Fred Spence (b. 1898, d. 1956), by my great-grandmother, Emma E. Vickes/Vickers. Have you an info you can share about your great-grandfather's children w/his 2nd wife, Gladys Mae/May Hawkins/Hilburn? Any info you can possibly share about Mrs. Hawkins Spence and her parents, as well, will be received with much gratitude. I am having a difficult time finding info on them and their three children. My mother is the late Peggy Jean Spence Stinson Hughen (nee Peggy Jean Spence, one of Fred Spence's 2 daughters, formerly of Selma, AR). My name is Martha Hughen Rudman. --God Bless You!Sincerely,
Martha

Hi Mr. Spence,
I am the granddaughter of Fred Spence, Sr., son of Francis Marion Spence (b. Gossett, IL, d. near Selma, AR in a logging accident), my great-grandfather, and (his 1st wife, Emma E. Vickes/Vickers, my great-grandmother. I am hoping you can share as much info s you can on your grandfather, William Robert Spence Sr, and his siblings, and also on your great-grandmother, Gladys Mae/May Hawkins/Hilburn. Any corrections you can offer me are welcome, as are all birth/death/marriage dates and names. I realize this is a tall order, so if this is too much to ask, I do understand. Thanks, and God Bless You.--Sincerely, Martha Clare Hughen Rudman (daughter of the late(nee)Peggy Jean Spence (b. 1925, Selma, AR), daughter of Fred Spence, Sr. and Martha Hazel Spivey.

Jesse W. Newton of Duplin, NC

A follow-up to my previous post: I've finally traced my ancestor, Jesse W. Newton, back to Duplin County, NC. I know from his headstone, the census, and his land records in Drew County, Arkansas, that he was born in North Carolina on April 20, 1803, and died in Arkansas in 1865. He was married to an Elizabeth, also of North Carolina, who was born October 2, 1803, and died in Arkansas in 1863. I believe he is the Jesse Newton who married Elizabeth Quinn in Duplin, NC, in 1827. The marriage record and marriage bond are both recorded and easy to find, and Quinn's birth date is, according to Quinn researchers, the same as the birth date of my ancestor.

While the Quinn family is easy to research, I've been unable to find out anything about Jesse's line. None of the discussions I've seen of Newtons in Duplin County around my ancestor's time mention a Jesse.

If anyone has any leads, I'd be most grateful.
Lula Leticia CROWELL Hunkapiller was a half-sister of John Wesley Haisty, my husband's grandfather. Children of Lula's mother, Harriet Elizabeth PEACOCK (daughter of Jared PEACOCK and Martha ?) were: Matthew Randell and Martha Louise Haisty (twins) and John Wesley Haisty by her second husband, James Haisty and Lula Leticia and Harriet Elizabeth Crowell by her third husband, Jennings D. Crowell. Molly CROWELL Bond (she married Pearson Bond who worked as a hired hand for her father) was the daughter of Jennings D. Crowell by his first wife. The Peacock and Haisty families were residents of Drew County, Arkansas. They lived in the area of Selma and Florence. Jennings Crowell moved to Drew County, also.
Have the same information that you do. Still researching but have not found any record of Hunter OWENS, father of Ezekiel Brooke Owens who married Adelia Pendleton Payne. Would like to compare notes with you. Have filled out much of the Owens, Payne, Alexander, Spotswood, Dandridge, etc. lines. Which of his children is your ancestor?

Ezekiel Brooke Owens and Adelia Pendleton Payne were my great great grandparents. Their son Milton Hubert Owens and his wife Martha Caroline Hankins were my great grandparents. Mary Owens, daughter of Ezekiel and Adelia and sister of Milton Hubert Owens, married William Joseph Echols. William Joseph Echols' second wife was Hattie Hankins, sister of Martha Caroline. So, siblings of both of my great grandparents married William Joseph Echols. How are you connected? I have Owens, Hankins and Echols genealogy.

Looking for any information on who may keep records for Wilmar Cemetery. I have a Harriet Belle Houston who died in child birth on 1 Jan 1914 and her child died about 7 month later. A family bible in the possession of Harriet's granddaughter says both of them are buried in Wilmar Cemetery. I have added them to findagrave, but I would love to get some confirmation and find out if there are headstones.

Thanks in advance
