Paula, I'm slowing extracting the probate and circuit court minutes for Franklin County. Franklin was formed Dec 1837 out of Crawford. James Gilbreath Sr was a bigwig of sorts being one of the assistant? circuit court judges. I'm not really sure what this means, I think he assisted the judge, I don't think he was a judge himself.

The Whitson family were early pioneers in Crawford, one Whitson, possibly a brother to the one we know better, was murdered following a dispute in which the county seat of Crawford was located to Whitson's store in an area called "Whitsonville". Creative huh?

At any rate, the Gilbreath and Whitson family appear several times in the records. I've been adding notes my tree online in WorldConnect as I come across interesting things. Like Esther Whitson having to file for her dower about five times before she evidently finally got it. And the fight over guardianship of the children.

Are you looking for descendents or ancestors? If ancestors, then your next step would be to get the death certificate and obituary of your grandfather that you mentioned. Typically obits tell you where his brothers and sisters are living at the time of his death, death certificates tell you who his parents were and possibly where they were born.

Also you should obtain his Social Security Card application file which will confirm some of this info, or give it to you in another way, and also confirm his birthplace. Let us know how you proceed.
