Iam looking for any information on my Great Grandfather William Andrew. He was born in 1861 and died in 1917. His mother's name was Elizabeth. Thank you.

I don’t know how much of this you already have so this may be repeating what you already know. Sorry this is so long, but so many people are researching relatives from this area I thought it might offer some clues to other families as well. (This may seem a little disjointed as I have had far to much caffeine today and my mind keeps shifting gears. LOL) So assuming this is the correct family, here goes:

William Andrew Whitman:

According to the 1880 census he was born in Mississippi. His Occupation is listed as: Works on Farm. He lived in Six Mile Township, Logan County Arkansas. He was 19 at the time of the census.

Elizabeth Whitman, head of household, age 50, born in Alabama
Columbus C. Whitman, son, age 22, born in Alabama
William A. Whitman, son, age 19, born in Mississippi
Murcer M. Whitman, son, 13, born in Mississippi
Robert L. Whitman, son, 10, born in Mississippi
Mattie Ray, Granddaughter, 3, born in Arkansas


There is a record of a C.C. Whitman marrying a Mrs. C.E. Suggs 29 Jan 1891 in Logan County. Don’t know if this is William Andrew’s brother or not.

William Andrew’s wife was named Leither. I ran across something that told her maiden name, but I can’t find the site again. I think it was Nunnelley.

Mercer/Murcer’s middle name was Moseley and this may have been Elizabeth’s maiden name. (He may be listed as Mose Whitman in some records.) Elizabeth was born in 1830 and died 23 Mar 1902 in Logan Co. Arkansas. She is buried in Harvell Cemetery. Their father was a C.C. Whitman born 9 Jan 1825.
Mercer/Murcer was married to a Grace Barnard. Here is contact information for Mercer’s family as given on Mercer's page in the Ancestry.com World Tree Project . They might have information on William Andrew as well: lgold2499@hotmail.com

Leither, William Andrew (W.A.), Grace, and Mercer (I guess he’s the one listed as Mosely M.) are buried here.
At one time there was a Six Mile school located at Chismville near Booneville. I don’t know the years the school was open, but it existed as of 1910 so if he and his family remained in Six Mile it’s possible that he and/or his children attended school there. Six Mile Township included National Springs which has been a topic of discussion on this board before. National Springs eventually became Ratcliff, which is close to Paris.

If you have an Ancestry.com subscription you go to “Search Records.” Then over to the side where is says “More Records” look under “Census” and click “US Federal Census Images.” Then 1910 census images. ( There is no index so you have to look through each page individually. It won’t come up if you do a regular search. That’s probably why a lot of people just seem to disappear off the face of the earth.) Click “Arkansas” then “Logan” then “Other Townships” then “District 59.” I forgot to write down the page number for William A. Whitman and family. It’s probably about half way through. I didn’t see C.C. on there. Either I just missed him or he’s listed in a different district.

Hope this helps you figure out which one is your ggrandfather. I had the same thing happen. Knew the name of my gggrandfather (David R. Butler) but we only knew his wife’s first name-Phebe. I discovered www.geneaseek.org and within SECONDS found her information. (The family had been searching for YEARS.) Except that was just the beginning. Turns out Phebe Lane was the second wife and wasn’t the mother of David’s son Benjamin, my ggrandfather. So it was back to the old drawing board. Eventually found out the first wife’s name was Elizabeth, but we’re back to looking for a maiden name. At least genealogy never gets boring. LOL

Dear Ladybug, I can't thank you enough for your help. My father Wilbur Whitman was an only child and he passed away on January 12th of this year. My brother's, sister and our families took him to the Cedar Grove cemetary to be buried beside his mother and father. Dad never did talk much about his father's family. His mother was a Barnard. Anyway you have given me a start. Thanks again.

I never could find C. C. Whitman (the brother) in Arkansas after the 1880 census, but I may have found him in Louisiana. (It could be a coincidence. I have run across separate families with almost identical information before. Very confusing.)

It appears that C.C. was married to Charlotte Elizabeth (C.E.) Suggs. (Her first husband was Buford Suggs.) Her maiden name was Nunnelle and she was the sister of William A Whitman’s wife Letha.

In the 1920 Louisiana Census there is a Columbus C. Whitman (est. birth year 1856 as opposed to 1858 in the 1880 census assuming this is the same person) listed along with his wife Lizzie. There are 3 children listed. The oldest was born in Arkansas. The writing is illegible, but the age (25) matches the approximate age of C. C’s daughter Mallie. Can’t read the second daughters name. The son’s name is Herbert.

The census shows that Columbus C. Whitman’s parents were both born in Alabama and that he was born in Alabama. That matches the previous information on William A. Whitman’s brother.

In the 1930 Louisiana Census records he’s listed as Christopher C. Whitman and his wife is listed as Bettie. The only child living in the home is Herbert.

No, I don't know where our emigrant Daniel Nunnally came from and I don't research family outside of this country.
Even though an ancestor may have arrived on a ship from England or Scotland etc, that doesn't mean that country is where they were from or lived. So, instead I focus on their descendants in this country so that others can find their kinnection easier.

Your grandpa William Andrew WHITMAN married Letha M. [NUNNELEE] sister of Charlotte Elizabeth [Nunnelee] who married his brother Christopher Columbus WHITMAN.

Letha was born 09 May 1873 in Logan Co AR - died 11 Feb 1917 Logan Co AR and is buried with William Andrew in the Caulksville Cemetery, Caulksville, Logan Co AR. Letha was the daughter of Jeremiah Franklin Nunnelee and Elizabeth Isabelle [Shaver] who married 28 Jun 1853 in DeSoto Parish LA. Letha and William married 21 Dec 1890 in Logan Co AR and I know of 7 children: Granville R, Mearle Buel, Clara, Earle Clarence, Donna, Ila, and Houston. Which of their children is your ancestor?

2 of the 9 children born to Christopher Columbus WHITMAN Sr and Elizabeth [Edmonds] who married 21 Jan 1847 in Perry Co AL. Their other known children were: Samuel, Nancy, John, Mary, Martha Jane, Mercer Mosely, and Robert.
Christopher Sr and Elizabeth both died in Logan Co AR and are buried in the Harvell Cemetery, Logan Co, Ar.

Your grandma's sister Bettie was Charlotte Elizabeth [Nunnelee] born 17 Apr 1881 in Six Mile Twp, Logan Co AR - died in Nov 1841 Lisbon, Claiborne Parish LA.
Bettie 1st married Daniel Bluford SUGGS 12 Oct 1881 in Logan Co AR and they had 3 sons: Albert Nunnelee, Daniel Bluford Jr, and Robert Edmond. Daniel Sr died 20 Nov 1888 and is buried in the Mountain Cemetery in Logan Co AR.
Bettie 2nd married Christopher Columbus WHITMAN Jr 29 Jan 1891 in Logan Co AR. C.C. was born Nov 1856 in AL and died 1951 in LA (I have not been able to find his death record)

I haven't researched your WHITMAN ancestry but I think there is a BIG clue in their neighbors on the 1850 and 1860 censuses because the Andrew and William WHITMAN appear to have followed them from Perry Co AL to Jasper Co MS.........
