I'm trying to determine who the parents of Joseph W. McCoy (Mar 10, 1852-Feb 8, 1928) are. Joseph is buried at Caulksville Cemetery, Logan Co., AR. He is my great, great grandfather. On the LDS site, Family Search, Elijah and Harriet Hubbard McCoy are listed as his parents, but everything I've been able to find points to John Lewis McCoy and Candacy Moseley McCoy. Does anyone have documentation to point me towards?

All Volunteers would be extremely appreciated, weather photographing or uploading pictures from disks from you home. You don't need to live here to assist with this project.

I will also be updating the cemetery listings that we have online at Logan County GenWeb, so kindly submitted by Mildred Collins Wasser, to include the newer graves as well some genealogical information on the persons listed.

EARNEST

Letcher Earnest, fourteen days before celebrating her 95th birthday,
passed away August 21, 2008 at Vintage Park of Louisburg, Kan. She
had been a resident there for eight years, and had become well loved
by both staff and residents.

She was born September 3, 1913, in Driggs, Ark., a daughter of
Dr Joe and Etta (Jones) Dorrough. She attended the University of
Central Oklahoma and became an elementary school teacher in Oklahoma
City, an occupation she enjoyed for 33 years.

On March 17, 1935 she was united in marriage to I. Cecil Earnest;
and they raised their two children in the Oklahoma City area. Shortly
before her death, she is quoted as saying: "When I go, don't be sad.
Be glad for all we had." Letcher was preceded in death by her parents
and her husband, who passed away in 1984.

She is survived by her son, Dr. James Earnest and wife Pamela of
Louisburg, Kan; her daughter, Marilyn Kay (Earnest) Lees and husband
Richard of Oklahoma City; her grandchildren, Ashley Pindell and husband
Joe of Countryside, Kan., and Dr. Matthew Earnest and wife Melissa of
Leawood, Kan. She is also survived by the "lights of her life,"
her three great-granddaughters; Jensen, Jessica and Jordan Pindell
of Countryside, Kan.

A graveside service will be 10:00 AM Monday, August 25, 2008 at
Memorial Park Cemetery in Oklahoma City. In lieu of flowers, the
family suggests memorial contributions in Letcher's name to the
Baptist-Trinity Lutheran Legacy Foundation, in care of the funeral

My 2nd great grandmother married Andrew THOMAS in Logan Co., Arkansas on 7 or 8 of November 1882. She had 2 daughters. Mary Emaline THOMAS born 4 Aug 1883 and my great grandmother Nancy Elizabeth THOMAS born 14 Feb 1888. Her marriage records have her listed as Mrs. C. A. ROWIN. I can't find any record of her first marriage nor of Mr. THOMAS' death. I believe he died shortly after Nancy was born because Celia married William James BRISCOE on 28 Sept 1890 in Sebastian Co., Arkansas. ANY HELP is wonderful! She was also known as "SEALY". Her maiden name was HOLLAND. SHe was born 14 Apr 1857 in Georgia. Her father was Zachariah Morgan HOLLAND and her mother was Susan ELizabeth WILSON.

ARKANSAS SLAYER MUST DIE TODAY

PARIS, Ark., July 13 -

Arthur Tillman, aged 22, who is to be hanged here
Wednesday for the murder of a girl, made a futile
dash for freedom while being brought here from the
penitentiary at Little Rock Monday.

He was guarded by three deputy sheriffs in the
baggage car. As the train slowed down at a steep
grade he broke the fetters which bound his ankles
and with a bound opened the door of the car. He
hesitated a fraction of a second before jumping and
that proved his undoing. A deputy sprung and seized
the youth by his coat just as he leaped. The coat
held and the prisoner was pulled back into the car.

The last hope for Tillman vanished Monday night when
County Attorney Benton refused the request of Tillman's
attorney that the youth be granted a respite. Governor
Hays had agreed to grant the respite if the prosecutor
and judge would recommend it.

Tillman twice escaped since his arrest. His first
break was immediately after his arrest, when he
jumped through the window of a house where he was being
guarded. He was recaptured in Fort Smith a week later.
While being taken to the penitentiary at Little Rock
he leaped from a moving train but was recaptured in the
hills the following day.

Dorothy Mae Kimbrell, 81, Of Booneville, Arkansas, was born November 19, 1926 in Cortez, Colorado to Calvin J. and Lilly Mae (Burlison) Long. She passed away May 6, 2008 in Fort Smith, Arkansas.
She was a retired salesman and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Booneville. Dorothy loved her family and her faith. She enjoyed hand sewing quilts, and her flowers.

She is preceded in death by her husband William Harold “Bill” Kimbrell.

Funeral service will be at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, May 10, 2008 at the First Baptist Church in Booneville, with burial in Oak Hill Cemetery in Booneville, Arkansas, under the direction of Roberts Funeral Home.

The Arkansas Tuberculosis /sanitorium is now known as thew Booneville Human Development center (BHDC) in Booneville, Ar. It is now a residence for mentally and physically challenged adults. Hope this will help

On the 1910 census, she is known as Lottie Suttles but on the 1920 census is listed as Lattie Suttlor. She married my great-grandfather William Alfred Courtney from the same area. In 1905 my great Grandfather, Marcus 'Mark' Tucker, owned a newspaper in Paris. I'm looking for the name. I've read the online history of the Paris Express and there seems to be no room for Grandad in their story ;~)

Family history has Mark Tucker serving as Mayor at that time also. Is there a list of Mayors online?

In looking at microfilm from the Lonoke Democrat, Lonoke County, Arkansas, I found the following:

"Brief Mention" column, page 1, column 5

"M. P. Houser died of smallpox at Spielerville, Logan County."

I am not researching this family, and have no further information on this person.
The microfilm is on file at the Arkansas History Commission.

PRISONER LEAPS TO DEATH FROM TRAIN

John H. Shaw, of Arkansas Charged With Forgery at Booneville, Takes Fatal Plunge Through Rock Island Car Window Near Wewoka

Shawnee, Okla, Aug.6-(Special)- John H. Shaw, who was under indictment on the charge of forgery in Booneville, Ark, and who was being taken to that place from Greeley, Colo, today leaped from a train running at the rate of 30 miles an hour, near Wewoka, and received injuries from which he died a few hours later in a Shawnee hospital.

He was arrested early in the week at Greeley, having forfeited the bond executed after he was arraigned on the indictment. He was in charge of an Arkansas officer who came from Amarillo today on a Choctaw train. Near Wewoka Shaw jumped from the train window. His skull was fractucred in the fall and he received other injuries
that proved to be fatal.

He was 35 years old and was formerly a respected citizen in his community. He has a brother in Fort Smith.

Amos A. Halbert married Nancy/Nannie Gillespie in 1886 in Labette County, KS. Amos died 1 Feb 1922 in Labette Co.

Their oldest daughter, Elsa married Fred Hase in 1916 in Comanche County, KS

At some point Elsa and Fred moved to Arkansas,

In 1943, Nancy Gillespie Halbert dies (the date I have is 1 Jul 1943) in Logan County, Arkansas. Of course I am only using this date as a guideline as I have no source for this info. Looking to see if someone can confirm this for me...

Also Elsa Hase died Jan 1975 in Booneville, Logan, Arkansas... Looking for an obituary for her also...

Her husband, Fred Hase, died in May 1980 in Sebastian Co., Arkansas...

Services for Vance H. Lee, 73, of 315 SW 65,
will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Captiol Hill
Funeral Home with burial in Sunny Lane Cemetery.

Lee, an aircraft specialist, died Friday in a
local nursing home after a long illness.

He was born in Magazine, Ark., and came to
Oklahoma City in 1935 from Seminole. He was
employed at Tinker Air Force Base from 1942 to
19xx, and in 1975 earned a Prospector of the
Month award from Tinker for eliminating modifi-
cation requirements of the CR aircraft and saving
the government $1.6 million. He was a former oil
field equipment businessman for J.E. Mabee Drilling
Co. and Carson Machine & Supply Co. He was a Shriner
and a member of Capitol Hill United Methodist Church.

Survivors include a son, Vance G., of the home; a
brother, Shannon, Stockton, Mo., and a granddaughter.

Edmond SUGG had 4 chn by his 1st marriage and 6 chn by his 2nd marriage as shown in the records below.

It took me years to find Sula Jane on the census before her marriage but I found her family indexed as GRIGGS on the Ancestry Com 1880 census - I submitted a correction as the name is clearly S-u-g-g-s !!!

Other than her marriage and cemetery records, the 1900 to 1930 censuses below are my only records of Sula Jane but I am expecting her death certificate any day now.

FYI, Sula Jane was born 27 Jul 1870 just 8 days after the 1870 census for her family was taken and therefore she was not shown in the household.

Services Today For Long-Time Okemah Judge

OKEMAH, June 30 - Funeral for Judge Arthur Cochran, 80, will
be at 2 p.m. Monday in St Pauls Methodist church here. Judge
Cochran died Saturday at Okfuskee County Memorial hosital.

Interment will be in Highland cemetery under direction of the
Parks funeral home.

Judge Cochran was born in Booneville, Ark., Feb.11, 1877. He
came to Okemah in 1920. He later served two terms as district
judge, two terms as county judge and several terms as city attorney.

He was a member of St Pauls Methodist church.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs Ola Cochran, of the home; two
sons, C.B. Cochran, Marietta, John A. Cochran, Tulsa; three
daughters, Mrs Floy Houk, Okemah, Mrs Lewis Rountree, Fort Stewart,
Ga., Mrs Miles Hall jr., Oklahoma City, a brother, Sidney Cochran,
Tyler, Texas, eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

I would love to see a copy of that information.
I have some information on the Lee's. I believe I have two ancestors descending from Lemuel 'Lom' Samuel Lee and Nancy Rains, both of my grandmother's(paternal and maternal).
My paternal grandmother was 'Clara'(Hilda Claretta Shirley) b. January 1889 at Paint Rock,Logan Co, AR, at her grandfather Silas Shirley's home. Her father was John Wesley Shirley m. to Consada Lee. Consada' parents were Britton Lee and Martha Collier. Britton Lee's parents were William S Lee and Eliza Dicey Ennis. William was brother to a Cader Lee.
My maternal grandmother was Minnie Missouri Smith b. Feb 14 1891 Speilerville,Logan Co,AR (near Paris). Her parents were Richard Lee Smith and Martha J McClure. Richard descended from Harriet Lee and Joseph Smith from Hardeman Co,TN. Harriet was daughter to Anna Lee and David Lee. Anna was sister to Cader Lee and William S Lee and daughter to Lemuel S Lee. I have a couple of pictures of Consada Lee and one of Britton Lee. Would be happy to share.

My GGrandmother Malinda Jane Imoe Wineland Pendergraft died in Logan Co., AR. We know that it was after the birth of a Grandchild in 1922.
On an Ancestry site of AR deaths is listed M. Pendergrass
Logan Co., AR 08/07/23 Vol. 068 Cert 00665.I know that there are many misprints in data, I think it very possible this is Malinda Jane Pendergraft.
Can someone tell me how to obtain a copy of this death cert for the State of AR.

Ollie Pitts, born circa 1885 in Logan County to Hiram Jefferson Pitts and Mary Jane ?. On the census it states Mary Jane Harris as her mother, but this was actually her stepmother. She was given to relatives around 1890 and we are trying to find out what happened to her after that date. She was my grandmother's half sister. Any help would be appreciated.

Corrine Lucetta Gunter of Oklahoma City, died July 7, 2007. Corrine
was born Oct.31, 1912 on the family farm in Logan County, Arkansas, to
W.B. Harrison Parker and Myrtle Mae Parker. She was the first of the
couples ten children and assisted in raising her large family.

After completing her education in Paris, AR, she married the love of her
life, Noah E. Gunter. They moved to Oklahoma City and established a
home, which she maintained for nearly 70 years. She took great pride as
a homemaker, and enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening and helping to raise
her 25 nieces and nephews. As an avid gardner she loved her home
landscaped with flowers and shrubs.

Corrine was a long time member of the Church of Christ and her religion
and her family were the focus of her life.

Mrs Gunter was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; brothers
Gene, Jimmie, and Carlos Parker; and a sister Velma Thayer.

Surviving Corrine are brothers Carlin and Bill Jack Parker, and sisters
Ila Mae Thomas and Ruby Chandler. Also surviving are dozens of nieces
and nephews, spanning 3 generations.

Services will be held 10:00 am Tuesday, July 10, at Guardian Funeral
Homes West Chapel. Interment will be at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Arkansas Youth Shot In Gun Accident

Le Roy Maxwell, 18-year-old Booneville, Ark.,
youth was admitted to the Bone and Joint hospital
Wednesday suffering from a bullet wound.

Maxwell was injured when he accidentally discharged
a .22 caliber rifle while hunting squirrels near
his home. Hospital attendants said the bullet
entered below his right shoulder. After undergoing
an operation here he was reported as resting com-
fortably.

Mary Jane James, born 8/2/1848, died 8/4/1904, buried in Mt. Pisgah Cemetery, Logan Co., AR. Mary Jane's father was Rev. Jessie James, married Lucinda last name unknown (she was either full or half cherokee. Mary Jane married James L. Durham 4/9/1865 in Seiver Co.,AR. Mary Matilda Durham, was one of Mary Janes children. Mary Matilda Durham married Henry Clay James (wonder if they were related?) Mary Matilda was my greatgrandmother. I would like to find Mary Jane's grandparents, if possible great grandparents and further back if I can.

I am trying to trace my family. My father was Plaze Davis and he had a brother named Jeff and two sisters named Mary Lee and Marie. Their parents were Dicie Ann Davis (Stafford) and I think their father's name was Bonnie Davis. Not too sure about this part so I am having trouble finding anything at all about my grandfather and his family. Any information as well as any about my aunts and uncles would be great.

I am looking for the parents of my great grandfather, Doctor (Dock) Hugh COBB. Dock was born in Jul 1848 in Mississippi. I believe his parents to be Nathaniel and Sarah (maiden name unknown) COBB as was stated by my grandmother, Eva Irene COBB. He married Catherine Belle DEAN in 1880 in Logan Co., Arkansas and later moved to Oklahoma. I cannot find any proof of his parents other than her written word. Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Researching my Native American hertiage, Elizabeth BERRYMAN (Bariban in family bible)b:1808 in AR or VA. Her maternal uncle believed to be Jim MARTIN or Chickama Oolaceta came into AR with Diwali Bowl to the Cherokee territory in Logan County (1820's). Elizabeth married Mathis PRICE, his father Joseph or John Looney Price possibly married a Cherokee woman known as "Lolly". I have info on the children of Mathis and Elizabeth but would love ANY info on them, the Martin family, their Indain connections, etc.
