Oran was my maternal grandfather's cousin through his mother, Ida Lou Brannon, who was the sister of my g-grandfather William R Brannan/Brannon (grandfather's father).

Oran was a WWII veteran and a survivor of the Bataan death march. My grandmother tells me he was a cook.

I would love to find out more on this family and their descendants, particularly Oran and his military service. Would also love to know the names of his mother's parents if anyone knows, as well as burial places for the family.

Geneva MASON FRANKLIN (CLAMPITT)

In a 1933 edition of the Fresno Bee it was reported that a woman by the name of Geneva MASON FRANKLIN was seeking an annulment or her marriage to a man she knew as Cecil FRANKLIN. They married in 1930 and she had given birth to a child for whom she was seeking financial support - a mere $35 per month in the midst of the Great Depression. She had learned that her husband's real name was Franklin CLAMPITT/aka Cecil Franklin CLAMPITT and that he was married to another woman. (He was also known to use the name Jim Clampitt.) These individuals are deceased, but I am anxious to learn any bit of information regarding them or their child (who would now be approximately 77 years old, if living) no matter how insignificant it may seem.

Cecil FRANKLIN CLAMPITT lived in Texas rather briefly and various locales throughout the state of California, including San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, Sacramento, Woodland, Marysville-Yuba City, Fresno - and perhaps points in between - throughout most of his life.

Cecil Franklin CLAMPITT, b. 4 Nov 1905 in Claiborne Parish, LA, d. 18 Nov 1976 in Yolo Co., CA, is without question the person referred to in the newspaper article - and his conduct should not be attributed to any other person having the same or a similar name.

Note: All persons having close association with this man who could be embarrassed by a public posting, including siblings, known wives, and known children (with the exception of the poster) are deceased.

Hello all!
We are still searching! The information I have on Lenora's mother was that her name was Alonis Hole Welliver. She married an unknown man by the last name of Welliver. I can find her ancestors thru the Holes of Darke Co. Ohio. I am not sure if when they came to California, Alonis married an indian or a cowboy and the family was not pleased. There has been no further records of Alonis. Lenora married an englishman by the name of Burleigh. This must have happened early on because Melvin Burleigh(Johnie Coleman LaBlatt or Jonathan LeDeux) and his sister Jeanette used the name Burleigh in high school in Fresno. On my fathers birth cert. the name is Johnnie Coleman LaBlatt and his fathers given name is Johnnie Coleman LaBlatt of Stockton.
Gayla & Babette;
I have tried to relocate your email addresses but have been unsuccessful.

There are a couple of dozen BENZLER individuals in Fresno County between 1900 and 1930. Some people have some of them descending from Phillip Benzler and Dorothy Peterson. Does anyone have a source?

I have these three children, based on family tradition, and one of them didn't make it to the promised land. He died in North Dakota, undoubtedly dreaming of raisins and a gentle, foggy winter. Nobody ever had to clear 6 feet of fog from a path between the house and the barn to feed the cows; people in North Dakota have to clear 6 feet of snow there every winter.

Phillip Benzler married Dorothy Peterson. Children:

Gottfried Benzler, born on 16 Jan 1851, Russia; married
Anna Marie Peterson, bet 1875/76, Russia; died on 13 Jan 1941, Fresno, Fresno, California.

Andrew Benzler, born in 1861, Dinkel, Kanton Kukkus, Samara, Russia; married Margaret Hartwig, between 1887 and 1894, Russia; died Fresno, Fresno, California.

Jacob Benzler, born in 1865 in Dinkel, Kanton Kukkus, Samara, Russia. Died on 31 Jul 1913 in Jamestown, Stutsman, North Dakota.
=========================

I can find Andrew and Gottfried on the census. I can't find their parents, nor any relation to Jacob via the census.
Woman Dies in Home Fire Near Airport

Mrs. Oramae Osborne, 74, was burned to death when fire swept through her home at 4893 East Harvard Avenue shortly after sunrise today. Jerry Brown, 78, a roomer in the green frame house just a few hundred yards from the Fresno Air Terminal, suffered cuts when he broke out of the burning structure.

Lewis Boyles of 2621 North Winery Avenue, a neighbor, said he was just about to leave for his job with an agricultural supply firm when he heard Brown calling.

"It was sometime between 6:15 and 6:30" Boyles recalled. "He was hollering, 'Fire! Help! He was lying on the grass near the back door and he was bleeding. I could see the flames coming out of the house. I told my wife to call the ambulance and the fire department and I helped him out into the front yard. Then I ran all around the house to see if she (Mrs. Osborne) was still inside."

Confined to Rear
Three fire trucks answered the alarm. Don Hurley, an assistant ranger with the Mid-Valley Fire District, said the fire started in the rear of the six room home and was fairly well confined there, although there was considerable smoke and water damage to the front room.

Boyles said the rear room, where the fire appears to have started, had been added to the home in the past few months.

Mrs. Osborne's body was found on the floor of a bedroom. Mid-Valley officials still were seeking to find the cause of the fire. They estimated the loss at $9,000 to the house and $5,500 to the contents.

Mrs. Osborne was a native of Fresno and had lived here all her life. Her father, the late Charles Hillgrove, was an early day Fresno carpenter. She was a member of the Native Daughters of the Golden West, the Degree of Honor and the Emblem Club.

Mrs. Osborne and her husband, T. A. Osborne, were separated.

Her other survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Oramae Tice, a McLane High School teacher who lives next door; another daughter, Mrs. Norman Anderson of Los Angeles; two sisters, Mrs. Violet Lewis and Mrs. Mamie Whitney of Fresno,; a brother, Frank Hillgrove of San Francisco, and two grandchildren.

Services will be announced by Lisle Funeral Home.

Fresno Bee Republican, The | Fresno, California | Thursday, May 27, 1965 | Page 1
=============================
CA Death Index:
OSBORNE ORA M 1890 09 11 FEMALE CA FRESNO 1965 05 27 - 74

Could anyone tell me the name of the possible newspaper that may have a couple obituaries regarding Thomas D DAVIS (b. 1869 Jefferson County, OH / d. 26 Jan 1947 Fresno County, California and his wife, Laura "Lottie"/"Lotta" (WESTLAKE) DAVIS (b. 1876 Belmont County, Ohio / d. 20 May 1929 Fresno County, California?

I believe their children are Earl D., Laura Jane (may have married a John Harold SIMERAL), and Helen E. DAVIS.

I realize the town name is necessary. Judging from the US Federal Census, he resided in Township 15 (1920) and Township 17 (1930). Would someone also be able to explain what township - town/city this may define?

Carol Miller

Over the years we have lost contact with an aunt, Carol E. MILLER, born Dec. 21, 1923 in California to Edward A. and Florence (Coats) Miller. It is our belief that she never married and her last address was 3785 E. Weldon, Fresno. The reverse directory shows a different family at that address, today. How can I learn if she sold the house or if, at her death, it went to probate?
She is not listed in the CA Death Index, so I am hoping that she is still alive. Her only sibling, Benton Ellis MILLER was killed in 1947-48 Germany while serving in the Army Air Corps. We have been told that he was buried in Forest Lawn Cem. in L.A., but cannot find him there. Can you help me with this search?
Thank you in advance,
Julie Collins
Ca.

I am looking for anyone who might be related to my paternal grandmother's family. Her name was Mae Abrahamson Burgeson. She lived in Kingsburg from 1919 until her death in 1971. She was born in Wilcox, NE in 1891. Her parents' names were John Abrahamson and Mathilda Nelson. Mathilda had brothers and sisters that also lived in Kingsburg named Nelson, but our family has lost touch with that branch. We have also lost touch with the Abrahamson branch. Both families were originally from Nebraska, before that, Illinois, and a generation before that, Sweden.

Jerry Ryan (1836-1909) and Catherine Neary Ryan (1841-1906)

I have some papers for the Ryan family, early settlers of Fresno. Hope this helps someone.

Jeremiah Ryan was born in Ireland in 1836, ex-confederate soldier from Texas, moved to Fresno in 1873. The notes state that he married Catherine Neary in Texas prior to the Civil War although the birthdates of the children are somewhat later.

Jerry and Kate had 10 children:
Johanna b. 1873, died infancy
Peter, died 1897
William H. died 1918
Jerry Ryan Jr.
Morris
Charles
Louis Florian Ryan, b. Fresno, 1882, d. Fresno 1947 married Lilian Kane of Carlin Nevada, had 2 children, Mary Laurentia (b. 1908, d. 1992, no descendants) and Louis K.
Mrs. M. Y. Hinkle of San Francisco (Aunt Jo, the beauty, cocktail created for her at the Waldorf Astoria when she visited NY c. 1895)
Mrs. E (? might be Z or L) W. Gradner of San Francisco

From someone's genealogy notes: "The beginning of Fresno, May 10, 1872. The Central Pacific Railroad formally located the town of Fresno. The earliest religious service in what is now Fresno is dated Oct 21, 1873. It is the Baptismal entry of Johanna Ryan, daughter of Jerry Ryan and hs wife, Kate Neary Ryan. "

The following sounds like an obituary: "Jerry Ryan, ex-confederate soldier, railroad and hotel man, came to this city 35 years ago from Texas where he settled soon after coming to this country from Ireland. Born in Ireland August 15, 1836, 73 years ago and settled in Houston Texas where he was married just prior to the Civil War. Serving with Seventh Texas Cavalry of Rangers, captured at Shiloh. After the war, moved to Oregon. later in 1873 he came to Fresno. Ryan was first section foreman for the Southern Pacific in this locality and by his industry and shrewdness soon accumulated enough money to start him in the hotel business. Was very successful in this, made such wise investments in real estate that he became one of Fresno's wealthiest citizens."

Taken from a possible obituary: "Mrs. Catherine Ryan died March 15, 1906, about age 65 when she died. She was the mother of ten children, firstborn died in infancy, another, Peter died 9 years ago (1897?) and other children still living: William H. Ryan, Jerry Ryan Jr., Morris Ryan, Charles Ryan, and Louis Ryan, all of Fresno, Mrs. M. Y. Hinkle (Josephine?) and Mrs. E. (? could be Z or L) W. Gradner of San Francisco.

Letter from Grace Ryan, providing info from Sutro Library in San Francisco about the Irish immigration of the Ryan family:
"On April 17, 1847, the Undine sailed from Limerick to NY. Among the passengers were: John Ryan, 32, farmer, Mary Ryan, 30, spouse, Jeremiah, 12, Bridget, 10, John, 5, and Honora, infant." On a recent trip to Ireland, Grace had learned that the Ryans originally settled in Cork, then moved north to Tipperary.

Jeremiah was in the Confederate Army and may have had a son, Jeremiah Jr, known as Dutch.
Leona died in Fresno(we have all of her information) but we don't know if George died there also. His birthdate would have been about 1890-1900.
Thank you
