David Sobel, a longtime Bolinas bakery merchant, civic volunteer and vendor at the county farmers market, died Wednesday while vacationing in Oregon. He was 42.

Sobel was camping with his two children in Gold Beach, Ore., when he was overcome with pain in one of his legs, said his mother, Joanne Sobel.

"His leg was bothering him," she said. Sobel went to a local hospital, where the doctors, suspecting either a blood clot or a bacterial infection, put him on antibiotics and kept him for observation. He was getting better Wednesday morning when he suffered severe chest pains.

A helicopter took Sobel to a Medford, Ore., hospital, but he died of a heart attack while en route. "David was in great pain," his mother said.

Sobel, a graduate of Terra Linda High School and Dominican College, owned the Bolinas Bay Bakery and Cafe for more than 15 years.

He was active in several community groups, including the Bolinas Community Center, where he was president of the board of directors, and the West Marin Disaster Council. He also gave his time to Bolinas Observatory, Audubon Canyon Ranch and Slide Ranch.

"He was a unique and very interesting person who gave a lot to the community," said Smiley's Saloon owner Don Deane, a friend for 20 years. "It was a shame, he was so young. He had two small children who will be without a father."

David Mitchell, publisher of the Point Reyes Light newspaper, described Sobel as "a hip merchant who ran a nice, friendly business."

Sobel is survived by his children, Mickey and Molly; his mother, Joanne Sobel; and a brother, Daniel Sobel. His father died earlier.

Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at congregation Rodef Sholom in San Rafael, and at 4 p.m. July 23 at the Bolinas Community Center.
