Do you know if there has ever been any reporting of ghost sightings at this hospital? My son now in his 40's swears he had a sighting at the hospital when he and a friend were exploring the remains of the hospital one day in the 90's. My son was then about 16 and only told me about this event a few years again, when I asked him about it the other day he got a full rush of goose bumps just thinking about it. His vision was of a young boy. Would enjoy hearing any information you might have along this line. Thanks, Susan

My name is Mary Sholler and I work in the California History and Family Research Room at the Madera County Library in Madera, CA. We have quite a few old pictures of the hospital, and one of some patients..but I too am looking for the records for this Hospital. We are wanting to index the patients who were treated there..I have had many requests for this information as families sometimes lost 1 or 2 children to TB and when the family researchers discover there was a hospital that specifically treated these patients, they are even more interested! I am going to contact the State Library as I understand that the State, at one time, might have had this information. If I find out about personnel records, I will let you know. Please feel free to email me a mksholler@gmail.com and I will send you some pictures. There is a website, ahwahneepark.org, and you will see what they have done with the old property...it's beautiful..ms

I am looking for information about the death of my great grandfather Samuel A. Williams. I have a transcribed obit from the Mariposa Gazette 10 April 1897 saying he had died the Friday before (April 2?)at his home on the Shell Covert Ranch. Mariposa County Recorder has no death record for him. I would also love information about the Shell Covert Ranch. I would appreciate any help you can give!

Barbara Hansen

I recently learned that my ggrandfather Henry Neal Winsor, lived in Hornitas CA during the 1930s. Apparently he ran an inn in Hornitas. He was there with his wife Emma Jane (Getman) Winsor.

I know that Hornitas now is pretty much a ghost town. Is there a historial society that would have information about Hornitas in the 1930's?

I have not been able to locate Henry N Winsor on the 1930 census so I'm hoping that any information about him living/workin in Hornitas would be of help.

Thank you,

Colleen Lill
Alberta Canada

I was looking for her journey across to America at the end of the war, googled your parents' names and found your message. No wonder I couldn't find Lizzie Shields -as she was called in the family- on the passenger lists, she was already married! Hope this message gets to you - I am happy to share any info about the Shields I have, very best wishes
Mary Tidbury nee Cummings

Hi Jennifer:
I'm happy to know somebody else in the family has researched our ancestors! I'm the only one who's done it in my 'clan'...so to speak. I started in 1999. Adolphus was a real character, that's for sure! Have you read the publication of his diaries? "Hurrah for Texas" is the title. A great read & it gives a real insight into the man. One thing I've never been able to find is his brother. He's on a TX census with Adolphus, but I think he must have died in the Mexican War.
Are you in CA? Of our TX relatives, my father was the only one who settled in CA. That's because he married my "Yankee" mother..as she used to say, during WW 2. His parents did come out here about 1949 & died here.
I've been to Mariposa many years ago. Cute little town. Other than being born in TX, I've never been back as an adult. Even though I have 2nd cousins living there. I, too, would like to go back there.
Take care,
Judy

Hi Judy,

I know - gold rush for sure. He got to CA in '49. So I would assume that to be the reason. Yes, my Aunt Sue has done a lot of genealogical research and so we have known for a long time about the connection to Aldophus and the early years of Texas and his political/social connection to Sam Houston. I hope to go out there someday to see the historic sites linked to the family. In any event, in my home growing up were the portraits of Joseph Sterne and his wife. Lots of family pride there.

That's so neat to know we share a common ancestor. Seems like you have been doing this research a while, yes?

Take care and best to you!

Jennifer

Hi Jennifer:
So great to hear from you! If Rosine was your g-grandmother, then Joseph Amador Sterne was your g-g-grandfather. We share his parents, as g-g-g-grandparents. I think that makes us fourth cousins! I have no idea why my grandmother never mentioned that one of her people moved from TX to CA! I was so surprised to find that Joseph Amador had migrated out here! There is lots of stuff online about the Sterne familiy in TX.
Judy

This is totally messed up.
Henry Koontz m. Susannah Schaeffer were the parents of
George Koontz m. Ona. There is no record of his middle name being John. And the Henry Koontz m. Elizabeth Bowyer lived in Monroe Co. also, but is NOT a dna match to our Koontz family in the same area. Our Henry's father was Balthasar Kunz m. Catharine and there is NO record of him being Jost Cuntz or John Cuntz m. Stoever's son, and he is NOT a dna match to that family!

Re: Lake McClure

Long before the new Exchequer Dam was built in the 1960's to form Lake McClure, there was a smaller dam called Exchequer that was completed in 1926. The 1926 dam inundated the original Yosemite Valley RR and a new "high line" was built. At that time, a bridge was built at Barret's and another further up river just below Bagby. In the early 1960's there was a beautiful swimming hole on the river at Bagby. When the New Exchequer Dam was completed in the late 1960's, the Lake filled the first year and went over the spillway taking out much of the road to the dam itself. The "high line" railroad bed can still be seen at low water, as is the tunnel between Barret Cove and McSwain Marina. I lived in Mariposa at the time the New Dam was built and have been swimming at the beautiful pool in the Merced River at Bagby. The town of Bagby is now underwater.
Some good pictures of Lake McClure can be seen at lakedonpedro.org. Though it says Lake Don Pedro, it is Lake McClure and the subdivision between Lake McClure and Lake Don Pedro is called Lake Don Pedro. We built a house in the Lake Don Pedro subdivision in the early 1990's.
Below New Exchequer Dam is McSwain Dam which formed a much smaller lake below McClure. It is used mainly for swimming. We had a houseboat on Lake McClure from 1971 until we sold it in the early 1990's. It is a beautiful lake and brings back many good memories. We raised our kids on this lake, being there nearly every weekend from Memorial Day until well into October.
Lake McClure was formed in 1969 when the Merced River from Yosemite was dammed. It is primarily used for irrigation and recreation. Hetch-Hetchy was formed in the early 1900's and it's river it the Tuolumne. My family lived in the nearby town of La Grange in Mariposa county (Varain) and I have a lot of info on people from that area. I was also a Park ranger in Yosemite and a boating deputy on Lake McClure. Hope this helps. Contact me if you wish.

My 3rd Great-Grandfather Antonio Lopez (b. abt. 1823) came from Mexico with his wife and 2 sons (Antonio and Jesus) to the Alta California Mines. In the 1852 Census for Mariposa County an Antonio Lopez, age 30, is listed in group 40. Can anyone suggest places to locate information? I believe the were in Hornitos for a few years before they moved to Las Juntas. Antonio drowned in the San Joaquin slough on July 25, 1853 after he was mistaken for a lookout for Joaquin Murrieta, arrested and tied to his horse. His horse got tangeled in the slough grass and both rider and horse drowned. When he was later found, his feet were still tied together beneath his horses belly.

I've pretty much concluded my research on this part of my family. Most of their children had no descendants.

Thanks for replying.
Judy

Hi Judy- I am sitting here this morning adding new materials to my Mariposa History and Genealogy Website:
http://www.mariposaresearch.net/

I was a member of CAGENWEB for many years, but did break off from their project several years ago.
CA GenWeb does have a website for Mariposa also.
http://www.cagenweb.com/mariposa/

There is a search engine on the main page of my website which will help you collect all the data for any given surname or geographical location in Mariposa mentioned on my site.

My website is a work in progress (about 13 years), and it is continually updated by submissions from researchers. If you have photos or family stories you would like to share, please submit them to me for publication on the site!

Thanks,
Carolyn Feroben
So I guess we're 'kissin' cousins' as the southern people say.

I forgot to mention, this Forest, of my original posting, I found in a mental hospital. He died young. If you Google his name, you will find that census info & his obituary.

The Mariposa Co CAGenWeb site is a great one. They have transcribed a LOT of historical information there.

Judy

My great aunt did a lot of geneology on that off shoot of the family tree. My mom has copies of letters that were written by Jane plus photos, etc.

Hi Kelly:
I found what I was looking for on the Gallison/Sterne connection. Here's a mini-tree to give you an idea.

Joseph Amador Sterne's daughter, Rosine Sterne, married Winslow E Gallison, who was the son of Winslow Gallison & Jane McCready. They married 26 Nov. 1892. Their children were Harold W, dob 11 Oct 1895; Norman S, dob 6 Jul 1897; Rosine E, dob 11 Aug 1906; Ralph S, dob about 1908; Joseph, dob 28 May 1912.
I have other notes that say who Forest belonged to but didn't find those yet.
Joseph Amador Sterne, was my g-g-grandfather's brother. He was the only child of my g-g-g-grandparents that left TX & came to CA.
If you need more, please email me.
Judy

My grandmother lived in Mt. Bullion growing up and a Mrs. Gallison was their teacher for a time. I have a copy of letters and here is what i found. Remember, this is written by an 8 year old:

Mt Bullion Cal
Dec 13, 1907

Dear sister May,
I thought I would write you a few lines to see how you are. We are all well. Our class had examination in Arithmetic this morning. Mrs. Gallison is getting cross. I wish I had Mrs. Hodges back again. There are going to be a dance her tonight for Elsie Tipett. she is going home. Edna Maguire is coming home to spend the Christmas.

good luck! carole

Hi Kelly:
I'm not a direct relative to the Gallisons...but through the Galllison marriage to Sterne. I have more info, but I have to find it. I haven't researched this in a few years...as you can see I posted it in 2007. But I will let you know what I have. You can contact me directly through my email address, frty9rgal@aol.com, if you wish. Just use Gallison-Sterne as the subject.
Judy

He lived in Niederndorf of the Nassau-Siegen region of Germany in the e arly to mid 1500s. This was in the time of Martin Luther and the Protestant Reformation. Th e Roman Catholic influence, a part of German history for centuries, vied with Lutherans and m embers of the Reformed Faith for support in government. The country was also constantly at wa r with peoples on all sides. This was a time of shifting borders and loyalties. Hechin's so n Arnold Cuntze (abt. 1525) and his grandson Johann Cuntze (abt. 1570) remained in the regio n during the time of the Thirty Year War. It was a war brought on by religious differences an d land hungry neighboring countries. At this time the Nassau-Siegen region fell under the con trol of Catholic King Ferdinand as well as Protestant influences. It fared better than othe r areas during the war however due to the fact that it was divided and ruled by two brothers , John Maurice and John the Younger, each on opposite sides of the conflict. Each claimed th e entire region as their own and so neither ally attacked the area*. By the time the Peace o f Wesphalia of 1648 brought the drawn out conflict to a close, Germany had lost about half o f her people to the ravages of war and the accompanying plagues and famine. It was around thi s time that Gotthard Kuntze (abt. 1610), son of Johann, and his son Johannes Kuntze lived. Th e brief peace was a compromise of sorts that allowed the Southern and Western lands to remai n Catholic while allowing Protestants to retain the land they had acquired and recognizing th e Reformed faith. However, shortly afterward Germany was plunged into yet another series o f wars. The French wars to the west, the Northern Wars with Sweden and the Baltic and The Tur kish wars to the South. This was in addition to the internal conflicts always present. The T hirty Year War left the Siegen region divided between the Protestants and Catholics but for t he most part, at peace. Then, in 1679 with the death of John Maurice, the conflict arose agai n resulting in escalating violence and death*. It was in the midst of this in 1714 that On e of Johannes sons, Johannes Kuntze (1671) watched his brother, Jost Cuntze, leave for Americ a. And, as the conflict worsened, Johannes' son, Johann Jost Kuntze (1712), who had been onl y a toddler when his uncle left, went to join him in America in 1737*. Coons, Cuntze, Kuntze , etc. in America The Coons (Cuntze) family originated in Germany and can be traced to one H enchin Cuntze about 1500. They came from Musen, in the Province of Nassau-Siegen, where Cunt z were still living around the turn of the century. Rich iron deposits were discovered in th e New World in large tracts in a region of Spotsylvania, now Orange County, Virginia. The Ger man Governor, Alexander Spotswood, sought to develop the deposits and enrich himself, as wel l as ingratiate the same to the Crown. Governor Spotswood counseled with the Baron de Graffe nreid, who was in Virginia, and decided to get miners from Germany to build the facilities, e xtract the ore, operate furnaces, and all other employments involved in iron works. Through h is influence the Baron arranged to get miners to Virginia from the Village of Musen, a minin g locality since the 14th century, in Nassau-Siegen. Dispositions were effectuated and the m iners arrived in Virginia in 1714. They were settled by the Governor in Germania by April o f that year and became the first German Colony to settle in Virginia. There they built cabins , a blockhouse, furnaces and dug ore for the Governor. The Governor's methods occasioned the ir move, in about 1720, to Germantown, later Fauquier City, where they acquired land and bega n farming. Meanwhile, other German Colonists arrived in Virginia. Each group brought its reli gious faith and gradually those of the German Reformed Church settled in Germantown Fauquie r and those of the Lutheran Faith moved eventually to Robinson's River. The first group of m iners, twelve heads of families, to reach Virginia were of the German Reformed Faith, one o f which was Jacob Cuntz (Coons), uncle of "our" Joseph Coons, who emigrated to Virginia in 17 37. (Working in the Governor's mining operation was an obvious way to get to the New World, b ut other employments for the Governor also brought many to Virginia.) 1. Joseph Cuntz Josep h Coons was an iron worker in Germany, and through arrangements with Governor Spotswood cam e to Virginia, as an iron worker, in 1737. 2. Jacob Coons Jacob, his son, and father of 3. M artin Coons, was born in Virginia. He was also a soldier of the Revolutionary War. Deed recor ds show a John Davis sold a tract of land, 150 acres, to Jacob Coons and heirs on the 12th da y of October 1796, for the sum of one hundred and sixty five pounds in gold and silver. The l and was in Clark County, Kentucky, and part of a military claim. (Clark County, Kentucky wa s formed in 1793. Records in Montgomery County, cut out of Clark County in1797, were destroye d in 1863, but Clark County records were preserved.) Martin Coons was likely born in Virgini a about 1775. It is not certain when his father left Virginia, but from the deed reference ab ove he was in Kentucky, buying land in 1796. By that time Martin was a young man and durin g this period met and married Mary "Polly" Lock in Jefferson,Kentucky, near present day Louis ville. Shortly thereafter they migrated to the Missouri Territory and settled in the New Madr id District, in what became known as the "bootheel" region. By February 27, 1806 he made cla im to 1100 arpents* of land situated on bayou St. John, district of New Madrid. Testimony tak en March 15, 1806 revealed he had a wife and five children in 1803 and cultivated eight or ni ne acres. After further testimony, the Board denied his claim. He probably continued to resi de on the premises and cultivate the fields he claimed, but without ownership. When the viole nt earthquake occurred in 1811 it destroyed what property and work they had achieved and ma y have induced their departure from Missouri. They arrived some time before 1821 to make thei r new residence in Jackson County, Tennessee. For unknown reasons Martin and part of his fam ily quit Jackson County and proceeded to Illinois (Probably to get some of that cheap Governm ent land in southern Illinois; some of the family already had.), but he later applied for a l and grant through the state of Kentucky. Martin received the grant, but before it was finali zed (so one version of the story goes), embarked on a trip to Hamilton County, Illinois, dow n the Mississippi River from St. Louis, aboard a paddle boat. He disappeared en route and wa s apparently never heard from again. It is presumed he fell overboard and drown. His body was never recovered (Note: A record of a Private Martin Coons from Hamilton County, Illinois i n Capt. Halls Company, 3 Reg't, 1 Brig., Ill. Mtd. Vols, during the Black Hawk War (1832) wa s probably Martin, Jr. He would have been about the right age then.) Martin and Mary Coons e ngendered 13 children. Elizabeth E. Coons, their second child, married Obediah Hudson, Jr. (I II), about 1821 in Jackson County Tennessee. Obadiah was a farmer and in 1825 received a gra nt for 100 acres of land in Jackson County, Tennessee. He and Elizabeth lived near North Spri ngs, Jackson County, Tennessee where they raised their family and lived out their days.· Change Date: 27 Mar 2008 at 01:00:00Father: Johannes Cuntz b: 1643 in Niederndorf, Germany Mother: Elizabeth Elsa Schuster b: 1643 in Niederndorf, Germany

Marriage 1 Anna Gertud Reinschmidt b: 1685 in Nassau-Siegen, Lower Wilden, Germany
·	Married: 7 Feb 1704 in Nassau-Siegen, Lower Wilden, Germany
Children
1.
