John - I FINALLY got the pictures of the "Massacre at Little High Rock Canyon, Nevada" scanned to PDF for any to look at. I uploaded them to Orval Austin "Harvey" Darst in the stories section. I set it to public, so I am hoping that works. If not, please let me know and I will work on getting them to you in another manner.

The stories here always say French.
Where were they from actually in Basque Country?
The description of how they were murdered is gruesome.
So far I don't know if they had families.

Thanks for your reply. I did simply throw this story out into the message board world, just to see if anyone had, by chance, come across this event in any other Craig or Modoc research.

Actually, I have much detailed information on the Craig family, I just didn't post all of it. We know for certain that John and Kate Craig lived in Lookout until 1898 and then they moved to Dry Lake/Mud Lake/Stobie which is just south of the Lava Beds, but is in the Tule Lake Township in the 1900 Census. Since there are many living relatives and some written correspondence, we know the child existed, but we are unsure of the time frame. Unfortunately the 1900 Census data is not accurate as far as the listed children, so that is part of our problem in identifying him/her.

I have thought about contacting the National Park Service and will do that. I will also look over as many newspaper articles as I can for that era (Adin Argus and the Big Valley Gazette), which I know will be terribly time consuming, but I want to thoroughly research this family story. The child was young when this happened--between the ages of 4 and 7. The loss of the child eventually led to a suicide within the family (this event is well documented).

Thanks for the helpful information about the Lava Beds and the roads of the time period. When the Craigs lived at Dry Lake they rented so there are no land records. The land they owned was in the Gouger Neck area north of Lookout.

I realize such a vague post is probably irritating to some researchers, but I knew the request for information was a long shot and I just wanted to try it.

Your information has been helpful--thank you!
Here is a full listing of newspapers published in the Modoc County.
http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/titles/places/california/M...

Most were before or after the 1885 period. However, the Modoc Independent (Alturas, Modoc Co) period of 1879-1890 is listed. By clicking on that listing, it takes you to a new window that has a "Libraries that Have It." By clicking on it, it shows three libraries having that microfilm.
--I used this one as an example, there might be others also potentially having the story.

The Sacramento Daily Record newspaper, August 3, 1885, identified the deaths of Martha, age 10 Years and 29 days; and Rosa Lee age 6 years, 4 months and 8 days. But, no information.
http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn82014381/1885-08-03...

Ron Bestrom

I did contact the Modoc County Library and although they did look up some obits for me, they don't have anyone on staff who does this sort of research.

I have been considering the inter-library loan of microfilm for the newspapers of that era. I think I'll do that! Thanks so much for the reply!

I HIGHLY doubt that a library would want to do a search of newspapers during those identified years. I highly doubt you would want to spend days looking through microfilm at newspapers from that time-period, only to find the child had been lost somewhere else. First you need to shorten the time span and potential location.

Bottom Line First: I'd suggest the National Park Service first. Then identify as much as you can about the parents and family, before and after "the event."

In genealogical research, seeking a "Family lore" event to finding facts is often more about the family than the event. So, when you post, post criteria information on the known persons. In this case, the date/place of birth for John and Kate is very helpful to distinguish from others having the same name. So, actually finding them in a place in the 1900 Census might identify some information helpful to the event. Your dates of the event, 1880-1900, appear to be census based? If they can be found living in an area BEFORE the event, that might lead to finding birth records of children and matching information to the family AFTER the event. Knowing where they were in those census is helpful. Attempting to identify the child also would help define "wandering away." If the child was 5 or 15... "Sometimes" children who wander away, didn't really.

The town of Lava Beds, a former settlement in Butte County:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lava_Beds,_California

The Lava Beds National Monument is in Modoc and Siskiyou Counties. The National Park Service administrates it, established Nov 1925. The NPS "might" have historical information about the area in their park library. A "historian" position might exist there. I do know from my NPS service, a lot of parks have such a creature. This is a smaller area and would have less employees.
NPS Contacts: http://www.nps.gov/labe/contacts.htm

The nearest "city" is Tulelake. As you could see from a map, Tulelake is well outside the park area. IF the child was lost in the park area, at that time there probably would not have been much in the way of law enforcement, rescue services. Searches would probably have been done by locals or other passerbys. Also, any newspaper accounts...the info may have never reached a newspaper. This is not a known death, so death record, cemetery would not be identified. Anyway, that is speculation not part of any fact, but it is remote, even today. They say Sasquatch is in the area.

Siskiyou Co was established in 1852 out of Shasta and now historic Klamath County. In 1874, part of Siskiyou was added to the newly formed Modoc Co.

Unless they took a diversion off of the current highway 139 to travel through the Lava Beds, they would have missed it. The majority of the Lava Beds is in Siskiyou County. During that time period, they did not travel by car on paved roads, so an excursion into the Lava Beds area would have been difficult.

The Bureau of Land Management has a database of land patents
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/default.aspx
issued under the Homestead Act and other Congressional Land Acts. It shows a John R. Craig obtaining 80 acres of land on April 16, 1890 in Malheur County, Oregon, just west of Boise, ID.
As a potential, I checked the BLM records to see if there was a land patent for the "correct" person, within the event criteria years. In this case, a "potential" person was in Oregon. You may be able to eliminate this person from your info.
--The 1900 Census of Nyssa, Malheur County, shows John R. Craig, born Mar 1839 in Missouri to both parents born in Pennsylvania.

The 1880 Census of O'Neal, San Joaquin Co, CA
John Craig, age 23 (1856/1857), born in CA to father born in NY, mother in Indiana, farm laborer
Katie, 20, born in CA to father born in Italy, mother in Ireland
Ida, age 1
---I don't know if this is or is not the correct family. If it is, I would see what information about them might exist in San Joaquin County. Perhaps more than you'll find in Siskiyou.

They will look up an obit.

If they can't or won't, you can contact your local library and see if microfilm is available for a newspaper in Alturas or Modoc County in 1885. I know they have newspapers back to the late 1800's.

If they won't or can't do a lookup, contact your local library about an inter-library loan of the microfilm(s) for that area for the time frame. Parents were Peter and Minerva Johnson Ivory. I would appreciate any information or suggestions where I might look. Thank you.

Craig Child Lost/Vanished near the Lava Beds 1890-1900?

This is a long shot, but I am currently searching for information on a child of my great great grandparents, John R. Craig and Kate Sherer Craig who, according to family stories, wandered away and vanished near the Lava Beds sometime between 1880-1900, but the dates are just a guess. It could be 1885-1905. Unfortunately, I do not know the child's name. I'm hoping this story rings a bell with someone and perhaps he/she could point me toward a newspaper article that would explain what happened. I believe the Craig family was headed to Klamath Falls from the Lookout area and they stopped overnight at a well known rest stop near or in the Lava Beds for travelers (I'm not sure where this rest stop is) and the child wandered away and vanished sometime in the night. The child was never found. That's all the info I have. Hopefully someone out there might be able to help me in my search. Thank you!

I have found a set of the same photographs by GL Matthews as well. My husband's grandparents are from Cedarville, the Harvey Darsts. Since this was such a large news happening at the time, I assume that is why they had this photo collection because I have not yet found any connection to any of the people included in the photographs. My collection has two pages that go with them, one is a narrative of the whole incident from start to finish. The other is a descriptive page showing what is in each photo. They are mounted on very heavy print-board so they might not go through my scanner. If it is possible, I would be happy to scan them for anyone who wants copies.

I read your message regarding the "The Little High Rock Massacre". I would like to recieve the pictures and the information that you found while going through your Dads things. I live in Cedarville Ca. it is only 17 miles to Eagleville Ca. My grandfather was in the possy that left Eagleville to look for the missing ranchers. His name is Fred Hill. The book Frozen Grass is the story of the massacre that took place in Feb 100 years ago. I am the 6th generation to live in Surprise Valley Ca. A very remote area that is made up of mostly ranching. Located in the very north eastern part of CA, 10 miles to the Nv. line and about 50 the Or. line. It is very enteresting that your Dad had the information in his things in NY. Thank you.

He was just a baby when his father died- Mary's husband. To my knowledge she never remarried. Some of the family moved to the Richmond area (her son and his wife and their kids).

We don't know much about her husband- he died young and since my uncle was a baby- he didn't know much and didn't pass much info down. The only info I have is from the county assessors history book of Modoc County- that's how I found out he owned a mine with a few other people and a stagecoach company.

Hi Meagan,
In 1880 the family was living in Sheep Head, Roop Co., NV with the following children:
Artha C., son, 11, b. CA.
Winnie M., b. CA, 9
Lulu B., b. CA, 7 died in 1890
Vertie W., son, b. CA, 5.
Baby, son, b. CA, 2.

In 1900 Mary was the housekeeper for a Thomas I. Talbot in Adin Twp., Modoc Co., CA.
Mary E. Harris, servant, b. OR, Oct 1850, widow, had given birth to seven children but only six alive in 1900, housekeeper.

Was Ora a child of Mary and Louis's? I didn't find her in the Census records.

On April 21, 1910 a Mary E. and Ora Harris were living in Altura, Modoc Co.
Mary E. Harris, head, b. OR, 59, widow, had given birth to seven children but six alive in 1910, matron county hospital.
Ora E., dau, b. CA, 28, single, typesetting printing office.

Since I don't know if Ora was their child, I'm not sure the above is your Mary.

However, on April 27, 1910 Mary E. Harris was living in Oakland Ward 1, Alameda Co., CA.
Mary E. Harris, b. OR, 54, widow, had given birth to five children but only three alive in 1910, coin adjuster mint.
Minnie [Winnie?], b. CA, 23, single, teacher public school.
Addie D. McDowell, lodger, b. CA, 35, M1=11, had given birth to four children but three alive in 1910.
Gayle McDowell, son, b. CA, 4.
Edmund Phatt, lodger.

I think this might be your Mary since she was originally a McDowell.

If Ora was their daughter, then in 1920 Mary was living in Richmond District 33, Contra Costa Co., CA.
Ora Bonner, head, b. CA, 36, widow, no occupation.
Vernon H., son, b. cA, 7.
Adin, son, b. CA, 6.
Regina, b. CA, 3 6/12ths.
Mary Harris, mother, b. OR, 69, widow, no occupation.

The only death info that is anywhere close to your Mary is a
Mary Ellen Harris
Died=12 Aug 1926, Union Co., OR per death cert #114.
Source=Oregon Death Info 1903-98.

To find her obituary, do a Google search for the Union County Oregon Public Library

OR
Contact the La Grande Observer, beta.lagrandeobserver.com/ .
Hi,
I think you need the complete birth certificate. I don't know if California will release one for 1921. Therefore,
I'd contact a volunteer at raogk.org, read guidelines, choose California, choose S and scroll down to Shasta Co. and choose Pamela.

Another volunteer is listed at freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~obitl/ and scroll down to Shasta.

I recommend a volunteer to contact the Shasta County Recorder's office, co.shasta.ca.us/index/recorder_index/birth_certs.aspx .

Another reason to use a local volunteer is that other counties issue informational records and Shasta Co. doesn't.

Is your grandfather alive? I didn't find him in any death index. Successful Searching!

I'm looking for information on the parents of my grandfather Everett Edward Sargent. No one living that I know knows anything about.

I've found a birth record which is 100% correct information (http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?db=cabirth1905&am... )
Mothers name: Fay

I've come across a 1930 census listing for the Fort Bidwell Indian School listing an Everett Sargent at 7 years old, indian, orphan. Correct age, name, and strangely enough, I visited my grandfather in the 90's in Bidwell when he lived there for a few years. Coincidence?

Is there any suggestions to follow up on finding his parents?
