Louis Jorgenson died March 9, 1936. His obituary was in the Feather River Bulletin, Pulmas county, Quincy, Califorina, Thursday March 12, 1936. It states that Louis lived in the Clio area for many years and that his body was removed to Quincy. I have searched on Find A Grave to see if he might be listed with a cemetery, but he was not.

Robert Belden III and Susan Lee Belden both have stones up there now. My sisters and I also left a rock we wrote on a with marker on my moms bday, also named Susan Lee Belden, although she isn't buried there so she would have something that is near her family...I'm sure the ink has now washed off though.

I want to make some clarifications for future Belden researchers. The Robert Beldens technically were not I, II, III. That's just an easy way to refer to them. They did not carry the same names. Here's a quick summary:

Charles Isaac Belden was born about 1831 in Connecticut (or Kentucky, depending upon which researcher you ask). He died 13 Jun 1868 at San Francisco, California. He married Cheed-Na (aka Susan Lee) about 1863 in Plumas Co., CA. She was a Concow Maidu Indian, allegedly a daughter of Noo-po-ney and Cheed-no. Susan was born about May 1845 at Concow, California, and died about 1918 at Belden, California. Her death was not registered with Plumas County officials.

Charles and Susan had two children:

1. Charles "Charley" Belden, born 16 Mar 1864 at Rich Bar, California, and died 25 Jun 1940 in Butte County, California. He married Lydia Christy and had five children.

2. Robert Belden, born 14 Oct 1870 at Rich Bar, California, and died 04 Mar 1947 in Plumas County, California. He married Clara Gulling Knox.

////

Robert and Clara had two children:

1. Kay Clinton Belden, born 13 Jan 1913 at Sacramento, California, and died 02 Dec 1948 at Sacramento, California.

2. Robert Clement Belden, born 14 Dec 1912 at Sacramento, California, and died 19 Jul 1988 at Paradise, California. He married Miss Burns and they had four children:

a. Barbara Ellen Belden
b. Lorna Kay Belden
c. Robert Duane Belden
d. Susan Lee Belden

////

After Charles Belden died, Susan married Robert W. Workman. They had one child: William Workman, born about 1876 in Plumas County, California.

////

According to Charles and Susan Belden descendants, Susan (Lee) Belden-Workman, her son, Robert Belden, her grandson, Robert Clement Belden, and her great-grandson, Robert Duane Belden, all are buried in the Belden Town cemetery, across Highway 70 from Belden Town, along the Indian Springs Trail. Only Robert Belden's and Robert Clement Belden's graves are marked.

Well, this is terrific information! So often, we never know the proper Indian names. I'm glad that your family has passed along that information. She would have had to Anglicize her name when she married a white man, so that she'd have a "proper" name. Why she chose Susan is anyone's guess. I doubt very much that she ever used the name Lee. Her brother chose that as his Anglicized surname, so it was then attributed to her later (following Euro-American custom).

Robert Belden III's grave must not be marked, because only Robert Belden and his son, Robert Clement Belden, have marked graves. Maybe someday someone will get around to marking Robert III's and Susan's graves.

I am really, really surprised that Susan was buried there, but if your family tradition is clear about her being buried there, that's good to know. It would have been very unusual (unheard of, in fact) for Susan to go against Maidu tradition, but that is not to say that it is impossible that she chose to do so. That, or her family simply made the decision after her death.

I will add Susan and Robert III to the Belden cemetery burial list on the Plumas County CAGenWeb site. Thank you for confirming the information.

Eliza

My gg grandma Susan Lee Belden's indian name is noted as Cheed-na and is buried along the trail where all the Robert Belden's are. I know this because my grandfather Robert Belden II took us there as children to see where his grandma Susan Lee, whom he was very close with, was buried as well where his father Robert Belden I is buried. His son Robert Belden III, my uncle, his ashes are buried there I was witness to this. Susan Lee Belden obviously chose to go by this name, whether it was because she couldn't use her indian name or not I don't know, and my mother is named after her. I was told Susan Lee started the school house located in Belden. Charles Belden is not buried with the family.

Belden Facts

Stories about how the small community of Belden, or Belden Town, was established vary a bit. There is a plaque at Belden that states that the community was named for the widow of a quartz miner named Mr. Belden. We now know that the "Mr. Belden" on that plaque was Charles Belden, born about 1831 in Connecticut, who married a Maidu Indian woman named Susan after he crossed the plains to mine for gold in Plumas County.

Susan would not have had a surname when she married Charles, since the Maidu did not use a system of surnames, so I'm not sure where the "Lee" is coming from in the previous posts. In fact, her first name wouldn't even have been Susan, though she obviously was called Susan after she married Charles Belden. The fact is that we don't know (and never will know) what Susan's people really called her before she became Susan Belden. To say that her name was Susan Lee before she married simply is not factual. Susan may have had a brother that used the Lee surname after he married, which may explain why the name later was attributed to Susan, as well.

Charles and Susan initially settled at Mineral Township and then settled at Rich Bar. Documentation clearly indicates that neither Charles nor Susan ever resided at what is now Belden Town. The couple lived at Rich Bar, where they raised their boys.

Charles and Susan had two children, Charles “Charley” Belden Jr. and Robert “Bob” Belden. Charles Sr. died in June 1868. His death notice was printed in the Plumas National newspaper on 13 Jun 1868, page 3, column 1.

At some point before 1876, Susan remarried to a man named Robert Workman. Susan and Robert had a son, William Workman, and also may have had one other child that died young. By the 1900 U.S. census, Susan once again was using the surname Belden. Whether her second husband died or whether the couple divorced is unknown.

Whether Charles Belden or his son, Robert Belden, filed a homestead on the land now known as Belden Town is a matter of contention. In fact, the land was granted to Robert, not Charles. Robert filed the homestead and Robert built the businesses there. The town, Belden, therefore was named for him, not for his mother. That's just a fanciful tale. Remember, neither Charles nor Susan ever lived on that land. The aforementioned plaque at Belden Town is erroneous.

Robert Belden opened a saloon and a general store during the railroad construction years and also erected a dozen cabins for travelers and year-round residents. The Belden Post Office opened in 1909 and a three-story hotel, The Riverside, was built around that time. The Riverside became a popular resort for fishermen and other travelers along Highway 70.

The Beldens buried in the cemetery across the highway are Robert Belden (the town's founder) and Robert's son, Robert Clement Belden. There is no evidence to support the idea that either Charles or Susan (or any other Belden, for that matter) is buried in that cemetery. That is not to say that other Beldens are not there, because they might be. However, without evidence to support the fact that Charles and Susan are buried in that cemetery, we cannot say with any factual certainty that they are there.

In truth, it is very unlikely that Susan was buried in that cemetery. She was Maidu. Back then, it was unheard of for the Maidu to be buried in Caucasian cemeteries, even if they had family members (spouse, children, etc.) buried there. She would have been buried according to Maidu custom: in an unmarked grave in a nearby Indian burial ground, or she might even have been buried in an unmarked grave near the Belden Cemetery (but not in it). I would be very, very surprised to see evidence that she was buried in the same place as her son and grandson. As far as her husband, it is unlikely that he is there, either, since neither he nor Susan lived in the immediate area when he died in 1868.

Eliza

Ever find what you were looking for? The Eyraud name caught my eye. I know of that family... buried at Rich Bar.

John Frank Eyraud (7/14/1852 - 12/21/1928), native of France
Lena M. Eyraud (1/29/1861 - 10/10/1941)
Emline Eyraud (4/6/1888 - 5/1/1891)
Evaline Eyraud (4/6/1888 - 6/17/1977)

As far as Giraud goes, I find the following in the Quincy cemetery:
Camille Giraud (d. 1906)
Nellie Giraud (d. 1905)
Alfred Giraud (d. 1911)
Lewis Giraud (d. 1906)
Lizzie Giraud (d. 1925)

I also find a J. E. Edwards, died 1882, in the Quincy cemetery. The only reason that I would doubt that this is Big Bar Jack is that you said he was of the Maidu tribe. If that was the case, he and his wife, Fannie, were most likely buried in an Indian cemetery somewhere. Unfortunately, the great majority of Indian graves are marked only by tributes left by loved ones (they often don't place grave markers to this day). There are positively no written records of Maidu burials, and there's no convincing them to start keeping records. I've tried. So, unfortunately, you might be out of luck as far as Big Bar Jack and his wife go.

On to Edwards. I find no Susan, Peter, Jim, or Harry anywhere around here. Without additional information, I can't help you there. Same goes for James and Anna Lee.

The name Belden rings big bells. Belden is a town not far from here. If Susan Lee married a Belden, I would be willing to bet that the Belden's are buried at the Belden cemetery. I'll have to go take a look sometime. And, in fact, there is also an Indian cemetery at Belden, so I could look for Big Bar Jack at the same time. It'll probably be quite awhile before I can get down that way, but I'll try to do it soon. Will post any results here.

[EDIT: See Belden post further down in this thread.]

I am researching for my GGG grandparnets. Big Bar Jack Edwards born in Pulga, Ca. birth around 1830's. His wife Fannie Wagner. I believe she was born around the same time period. My grandparents belong to the Maidu Tribe back then.Big Bar Jack was a miner. My GG grandmother her name was Nellie Edwards born around 1850-1860. She married Camille Giraud (Eyraud). He was a miner also. He came from France. He was born Dec 1857. He came here around 1870-1880's. His father was John Frank. He came to Rich Bar around 1852. He was a miner. Getting back to Nellie she had a sister Susan, brothers Peter, Jim, Harry. Nellie had cousins. James Lee and Susan Lee was Nellie cousin. He was born around 1845-1850's. He married Anna Davis. She married Issac Belden arround 1850-1860's. He was from England. They had a son Robert Belden. He was born 1870.

If you have any information or questions.
You have beeen waiting a long time to hear from me. I do not often read the messages but I do check the trees much more often. Yes, I am in Minnesota. I am a descendent of Joseph H Taresh and Rosa Novak. Their first born child, was my grandmother Amelia Mary Taresh, married to Samuel Eberious Nelson. Amelia remarried years after the death of Samuel to Henry Seip. Samuel is buried in the Bankton Cemetery in Lake of the Woods County, MN. Amelia and Henry both died in Salt Lake City, Utah and are buried there. My mother Alma Mary Nelson, was the 5th child of Amelia and Sam. There were 8 children born to them. At this time, the 2 youngest sons are still living. One in Utah and the other in Wyoming. I have visited the graves for the Taresh relatives that stayed in MN. Josef and Catherine Taresh have a beautiful stone-nice and large in the Bohemian Cemetery south of Sauk Centre, MN.

Hello my name is Matthew Taresh. I am from Chico, California. It's not far from plumas. I just recently started to look at my family because I am curious of where my name came from. I don't know much about my family but would like to figure out as much as possible.

I know a guy who has done extensive research on the schools in Quincy (county seat) so I am guessing that records still exist for all of the county schools, though it may depend on the era.
Plumas Unified School District would be the place to start, though I doubt you would get much more than a yes or no on the phone - and you have to listen to the whole voice mail message to decide who to bother.

Wow! OK, name is "Eddy C. Pratt" Could be Edward, but all census spelled 'Eddy'. Middle name may be Charles. born in CA between 1858-1861 +/- . No known lineage... may have been adopted by an Abraham & Kate Church family... He lived/worked w/them per1880 census, and in 1910 was said to leave to live w/"his sister Nellie". The Churches has a dau. Nellie. Also suggested he went by last name of "Hobie" or "Hoby". Divorced about 1910 wife Florence Turner in Loyalton, CA. I give details just in case you run across other names nearby... Thanks! PS Can you find date Shady Grove may have abandoned IOOF name, or maybe it was the other way around... Someplace there ought be a written record list... many many thanks: been looking for Eddy for 35 years.

The 1920 Census for the Beckwourth Township in Plumas County, California shows James W. Chard, his wife, Alice R. and daughter, Alice Maloney. James was listed as a carpenter.
The town where they lived was Portola. At that time, there was one two-story school in Portola and was called the "Portola Grammar School" (grades 1 thru 8).

Two more amendments.

The "Miss Young" and subsequent children that I mentioned in my earlier post do not seem to be related to the Allen Pettigrew/Chester Pettigrew family otherwise outlined here.

Also, it was Ronnel (not Ronnell, as I previously misspelled the name) Kenneth Pettigrew that married (1) Mary Darlene Brantley. Ronnel was born 08 Apr 1944 in Butte County, California and died 25 Jul 2003. His last known residence/benefit (according to the SSDI) was Paradise, Butte County, California. Mary was born 13 Jan 1946 in Oklahoma and died 30 Jul 1996 in Butte County, California. Ronnel and Mary were married 10 Apr 1965 in Shasta County, California. They had two children, Deborah K. Pettigrew (born 13 Dec 1970 in Butte County, California) and Carl R. Pettigrew (born 18 Jun 1972 in Butte County, California). Ronnel and Mary divorced at Butte County, California in Jun 1970. Ronnel married (2) Patricia Ann Treece on 29 Apr 1987 in Reno, Washoe County, Nevada. I cannot confirm that "Treece" was Patricia's maiden name (it's possible that it was a surname from a previous marriage).

I provided some erroneous information, unfortunately. I got some data mixed up or I relied on another researcher's inaccurate data. Either way, I feel bad about posting it and would like to amend it now. The information may not be entirely complete, but at least I know that what is here is correct.

With regard to Allen Josh "Rocky" Pettigrew (his name was not Joshua Allen Pettigrew, as I reported previously), I have the following information (again, this data may be incomplete):

1. ALLEN JOSH "ROCKY" PETTIGREW (Son of Chester Pettigrew and Rose Watson) was born 09 Jan 1931 in Oklahoma and died 28 Dec 1973 in LaGrange, Stanislaus County, California. He married (1) MARGARET LEONA DARBY 16 Apr 1950 in Butte County, California. She was born about 1932. Allen and Margaret divorced between 1954 - 1964. Allen married (2) DARLENE F. ETTER about 1964. Allen and Darlene divorced at Stanislaus County, California in Jun 1970.

Children of ALLEN PETTIGREW and MARGARET DARBY are:
i. RICHARD ALLEN PETTIGREW. (see below)
ii. LILLIAN ROSE PETTIGREW. (see below)
iii. NORVAL LEROY PETTIGREW, b. 15 Feb 1954, Butte County, California; m. DEBRA A. HODGES, 06 Aug 1997, Tarrant County, Texas. Norval and Debra divorced at Tarrant County, Texas on 06 Aug 1997.

Children of ALLEN PETTIGREW and DARLENE ETTER are:
iv. MYRLYN D. PETTIGREW, b. 10 Jun 1965, Nevada County, California.
v. CHESTER SHELDON PETTIGREW, b. 19 Jul 1967, Butte County, California.
vi. CLIFFORD L. PETTIGREW, b. 03 Dec 1967, Nevada County, California.
vii. CLINTON R. PETTIGREW, b. 03 Dec 1967, Nevada County, California.

======================================

2. RICHARD ALLEN PETTIGREW (Son of Allen Josh Pettigrew and Margaret Leona Darby) was born 15 Apr 1951 in Butte County, California, and died 17 Apr 2005. His last known residence/benefit (according to the SSDI) was Applegate, Placer County, California. He was buried at Iowa Hill Cemetery in Colfax, Placer County, California. He married (1) LINDA M. BRAMMER 12 Jul 1969 in Butte County, California. She was born about 1951. Richard and Linda divorced at Nevada County, California in Jul 1975. Richard married (2) RITA M. JOHNSON 05 Oct 1978 in Reno, Washoe County, Nevada. At the time of their marriage, Rita’s surname was Anderson. According to her daughter’s birth record, however, Rita’s maiden name was Johnson.

Child of RICHARD PETTIGREW and LINDA BRAMMER is:
i. APRIL R. PETTIGREW, b. 05 Jun 1972, Butte County, California.

Child of RICHARD PETTIGREW and RITA JOHNSON is:
ii. JEANA MARIE PETTIGREW, b. 13 Oct 1973, Stanislaus County, California; m. MICHAEL GRANT ALEXANDER, 17 May 1992, Washoe County, Nevada.

3. LILLIAN ROSE PETTIGREW (Daughter of Allen Josh Pettigrew and Margaret Leona Darby) was born 16 May 1952 in Butte County, California. She married RAYMOND L. HAMMONS 13 May 1968 in Butte County, California. He was born about 1950.

Children of LILLIAN PETTIGREW and RAYMOND HAMMONS are:
i. RAYMOND L. HAMMONS, b. 27 Sep 1968, Butte County, California.
ii. LYNNETTA R. HAMMONS, b. 04 May 1980, Butte County, California.

Wow, grandkids....April, the woman is married to Chester Sheldon Pettigrew, Allen Josh (Rocky) Pettigrew's son. After your father, Richard Allen Pettigrew, Aunt Lillian Rose Pettigrew and Unncle Norval Leroy Pettigrew, Allen divorced Magaret Leona (Darby) Pettigrew and Married Darlene Ette, I believe her name was. Allen and Darlene had four childrent, Myrlen, Chester, twins, Clifford and Clinton.
Allen's parents were Chester and Rose Pettigrew. Yes, Richard married Linda Brahmer, which generated you, April and your sister Tena. None of these reports on Norval "Leroy" Pettigrew are correct. Let's just keep it that way. I can be contacted via e-mail at pett54@aol.com.

Am a little confused: I think Sierra valley always lay inside Sierra County. Perhaps part was in Plumas? Do we have any facts here? I know the border shifted 3 or 4 times. My Wing family came in late 1860's, Two sisters, Alice and Jessie married Albert Turner and Henry Stiner respectively. I know Albert had ranches in the valley, but I don't know if Stiner did. I do know Jessie and Henry ranched a long time in Modoc Co. in Surprise Valley. Would love any info on either of these two family names.

Thank you for looking into this. Yes, I had gotten that info you had listed. I noticed they had her mother as Fatewood, rather than Gatewood. I have the 1920 Census, then also the 1930 Census of her family in Riverside, but Bessie is not listed. She must have married by then and is with her husband, but I have been unsuccessful locating her family in 1930. I will contact the Daily Republic to see if I am able to find her obituary, which may lead to her children that may still be living and can shine some light on her family and that of her parents & other siblings. Again, thank you. I appreciate the info & time you took to find it!
