Actually his mothers last name is not Costa. Still not sure why he used that as his mothers maiden name and as his own middle name. He was not christened with the middle name-it is something he took later in life...as did his eldest brother. Someday I hope to figure out just why!! I do have Joseph's ancestry in Madeira Portugal as far back as is possible (direct line only to his grandfather who was an orphan given the name Camara). Other lines of his though lead back to the first settlers on Madeira in the 15th century.
He has been a fascination of mine since I was a young girl and my father and his siblings talked about how Joe just disappeared one day. It was such a joy to find out some of what happened to him...but I am not satisfied now that I have found what appears to be him in the 1940 census with Mildred and Lee...whom I knew nothing about.
