Have somebody at the Shasta Historical Society look in the Redding newspapers on and around that date for you too. Having gone through many issues of that time period when I am up there - I would think there would be at least a small mention of Clyde's unfortunate accident - if even at the time he was listed as a John Doe.
I've also been through several of the coroner's inquests there. They might not allow them to be zeroxed - but perhaps someone can take digital photos for you. At least they can give you the gist of what it says.
