My grandfather was a John Masson born in Belguim , imagrated in 1896, had 7 children, Leo b 1890 belguim, Morris b 1893 Ill?, Lucy b 1896 Ill.,Louis b 1899 Ill?, Mary b1901 Ill., Frances (my father) b 1903 Ill., Joesph b 1905. These are from the 1910 census. John is listed as widowed, and the story I have is Grandma died giving birth to Joesph. Notice Joesph is not listed in census. As I was told John kindof went off the deep end with his wifes death and went to the bottle. My dad was raised by a catholic sister, and his sister Mary was (adopted?) raised by a Knox family. Please contact me if this is of any help, as I have run into a dead end with most of the family.

Hi,

I am researching the California Spellenberg family. Could you please send me the letters regarding the Spellenberg family of Downieville? I am looking for James William Spellenberg (born 1869, died 1902 in Downieville) and his descendants.
Unfortunately, neither the link postet here nor the search on http://www.cagenweb.com gives access to the letters (404 error).

Regards,

Hans-Joachim Hof

I saw your repl from 19 jul 2008 regarding the Harris Family. I have started researching my parents place again and saw your information below regarding the Harris family and Our House station. My parents own that property now. Although nothing remains of the Stagecoach Station, the history remains! We are looking to find out what happened to the Harris family and the Stagecoach stop and if there are any pictures out there of this location. We call it "our house" but i think the original name was middle waters station. There is a local diversion dam on the Middle Fork Yuba river that is named after their place. I have had a hard time finding anything out about it, just what is written here. Do you have any pictures of this place? It would be wonderful to see what was here then. Any additional information or pictures that you may have would be greatly appreciated. My email addr is osbornec9701@yahoo.com. Thank you!
Hi,

I checked findagrave.com but he's not listed.

I think looking for his obituary is a good idea but problematic because he's been gone for so long. Have you contacted the Loyalton Statation Library in Loyalton?

They may not have newspapers that old and you can contact the California State Library, library.ca.gov/calhist/genealogy.html which has the largest collection of newspapers in the state. However, they don't have the staff to look up obituaries but will send you a list of local researchers who will look one up for a fee.

There's a possibility that he's burial place might be on his death certificate (it's not alwayas listed in an obituary either). Again there might not be a death certificate either because of the fairly early date when he died. If you decide to go this route, contact the Sierra County Clerk-Recorder, sierracounty.ws/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_user...
Successful Searching!

Seeking Location Info - Pine Grove and Flume Camp Graves

The Plumas County CAGenWeb Coordinator, Eliza Bullard, is seeking anyone that may know the precise locations of the Pine Grove graves, near LaPorte, and the Flume Camp grave of L. H. Merritt, also near LaPorte. Both burial places most probably are part of Sierra County, but are associated with LaPorte in old records. Specifically, Eliza is seeking latitude/longitude of those grave locations, as well as digital photographs of any grave marker that may exist at those locations. The Pine Grove graves (3 known ones for John Harper, Maria Thurston and Eleanora VanWindle) are supposed to be located approximately 7 miles northeast of LaPorte, on the east side of Table Rock Road. The Flume Camp grave is supposed to be located 6 miles southeast of LaPorte, on what has been referred to in the past as Happy Hollow Road. If you know anything about these graves, please contact Eliza at elizabw.ca(AT)gmail.com. Replace the (AT) in the email address with an @ symbol.

Hello,
There is a cemetery in Loyalton that I believe is owned
by the city. The city clerk may have records of who
is interred. Across the valley there is a town of Vinton
with a cemetery where Catholics from Loyalton are buried.
The City of Loyalton has a site on the internet where
they welcome questions.
Here is the address
www.cityofloyalton.com/contact/php

My wife was born and raised in Loyalton.
I am looking for information on my gg grandfather THOMAS HINES (b. Ireland @1826) who traveled from Ohio to California in the early 1850's as a speculator in search of gold perhaps.

I am not sure where in California he may have traveled; the only information I have been able to track down on him is that he is on the 1852 California Census living in Sierra. He left California somewhere around 1854 or so since he had his second child back in Ohio in 1855. So the time he spent in California would have been probably between 1849 and 1854.

Any information anyone could provide or any recommendations on where I should search next would be most appreciated.

Thank you!

Pat
I've indexed an obit. in Milwaukee's German papers for a Mrs. Milwaukee S. Smith Hockelberg. Was her maiden name Sivyer? There are also obits in the local German papers for Charles Milwaukee Sivyer who was apparently the first anglo birth in Milwaukee.

Gary Rebholz
gary.rebholz@gmail.com
Milwaukee's German Newspapers; an index of death notices and related items (1844-1950)

Charles Sivyer was the first white male born in Milwaukee. Milwaukee Harriet Smith was the first white person and the first white female born in Milwaukee. They were a few months apart i believe. The Wisconsin Historical Society has info. Her father was Uriel B. Smith.

Loyalton Sierra County: Looking for Eugene Savage death record

I am trying to find what happened to my relative, Eugene Savage. He was born in 1878 in San Francisco. He moved around a lot, but he seems to have settled in Sierra county in the 30's (Calpine) and then Loyalton in the 1940's. He worked all his life as a saw filer. I suspect that he died in Loyalton, but I cannot find him in the California death records. The last "sighting" I have for him is the 1944 voter registration, where he and his wife Laura were registered voters in Loyalton. He also filled out his WWII draft registration in 1942 in Loyalton. I don't know how many cemetaries are in Loyalton, but I would appreciate it if anyone local could check and see if he is buried there.

Thanks for Andrew Johnson work up. He doesn't look to be my man for Sarah J.Bliss.
This is my outline for Sarah J. Bliss maybe you can see something I am missing.
Hi,
In 1880 Sarah J. Wolcott was living with her grandmother Sarah J. Curtiss in Kalamazoo, Kalamazoo, MI.
Sarah J. Curtiss, head household, b. NY, 66.
Sarah J. Wolcott, granddau, b. MI, 32, seamstress.
Henry O. Wolcott, great grandson, b. Johnson was living in Sierra, Sierra, CA.
Sarah J. Johnson, b. MI Sept. 1847, had given birth to two children but only one alive, no occupation.

In 1910 Sarah was living in Sierra.
Sarah J. Johnson, b. MI, 62, widow, 2/1 children, no occ.
Christopher Darins, boarder.

In 1920 Sarah was living in Sierra.
Sarah J. Johnson, b. MI, 72, widow, 72, no occ.
Christopher H. Darius, boarder.

I didn't find Sarah's death info but I suggest you contact Sierra County Clerk-REcorder, sierracounty.ws/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_user_...

I looked for her burial in findagrave.com, interment.com and U.S. Tombstones but didn't find her listed. Not all of the cemeteries are indexed. Successful Searching!

Hi,
James Arnold Rhodes
Born: Rhode Island
Died: May 16, 1902, 83
Married
Source: Pre-1905 California Deaths, rootsweb.ancestry.com/~cabf1905/sierra/sierraCo-pe-ri.htm

I'd contact the local libraries for his obituary. Go to library.public-libraries.org/county/CA/SierraCounty.html for a list of the local libraries.

You might need to contact the California State Library, library.ca.gov/calhist/genealogy.html because of the age of his obituary. They will send you a list of researchers who will copy his obituary for a fee.

I searched findagrave.com, interment.com and usgwtombstones.org/california/sierra.html but didn't find his grave. However, not all of the cemeteries are indexed. His burial place will be on his obituary or on his death certificate.

I searched Ancestry and FamilySearch but didn't find a death record for Sarah J. I'd contact the Clerk-Recorder at sierracounty.ws/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_us...
Then click on Clerk-Recorder. They will charge a fee even if they don't find her death cert.
I would guess you have found your answers by now, however, I will tell you what I have found. Jacob Keefer Winans Married Nancy J (1860 Census) and they produced a son named Eli R. Eli Moved to Texas and married a total of 3 times. Becca E. in 1883. Then married Sarah Knight and in his later years married a lady named Margaret. Margaret was my Great grandmother and funny thing is I know less about her than anyone his wives. If you want to search for Eli try searching the last name Wining (1860), Winoms (1900), Wilson (1880) and Shockey (1870). Shockey family was his mother's next husband.
Hope this helps

I have photographs of the Sharkey ranch house with Delia Sharkey standing in front of it. She married George Myers and they had five children. The house is gone now. They sold that ranch and moved to Midas, Nevada where two of their daughters and at least one son had set up when gold was found in 1907. My mother Marian Myers Hargrove was born in Midas in 1912. I have photos of George and Delia's 50th wedding anniversary in Midas.

I am a direct descendent of George Myers and Delia Sharkey (they are my great-grandparents) I have always been able to find the cemetery, I hope it is still there. I think I was there in 2003. My cousins and I want to place a plaque with the names of our grandmother Annie Veronica Myers Hargrove (George and Delia's daughter) and our parents who are Annie's children. My mother just died in July at 98 yrs old, my uncle Jack Hargrove is alive and well in Reno at 94 years old. We are related to the Turners by marriage and the Boyles by marriage.

FamilySearch has placed the Calif 1852 Census online. They are not quite done with it yet since the images are not yet available. To access it:

1. Go to www.familysearch.org.
2. Create a free user id if you don’t already have one, and log in.
3. Select “USA, Canada, and Mexico” from the Browse by Location list.
4. Select “Census and Lists” on the subsequent screen.
5. Then select “California, State Census, 1852”.

When you post, post the link to your family tree. It really helps volunteers to see the "big" picture of what you have already found. In this way, you won't get suggestions that have no relevance to actual.
http://trees.ancestry.com/tree/1403987/person/-1948139926?ss...=
I found your tree after doing much of below, so there is info you already have.

First, a bit of history (which you probably know): The great California Gold Rush began in 1848 bringing in large scale immigration from the US into this land of Mexico. California became a State on 9/9/1850, just after the 1850 Census where John is found in Illinois. So, at what point between 1850 and the CA State Census 1852 did he pack up and head out to CA? That might not be found. Sierra County itself was formed in 1852 from parts of Yuba County. This complicates matters as just where did the enumerator come ? A Sierra County webside identifies some 16,000 miners came into the area between 1848 and 1860. There are many ghost towns as the population diminished.
--Based on your profile and love of history and travel, I seriously doubt that you need any help in finding information and history.

Your comment on indication of specific town or camp is the main problem with this enumeration. John Ontes is on a page dated 13 August 1852. Page one of this set is dated 1 June, with hundreds of "miners" in between. The Enumerator was Francis Anderson, but he doesn't show up on the transcription, but there are MANY pages where the name is missing. There are five Andersons in Sierra Co in the US Census. The manner and means of the enumeration is extremely important to identify just what these persons were doing and where. I can't see an enumerator wandering about on horseback, or walking, and just going up to every person he sees for the count...all through Sierra County. Was there a method used? Did the enumerator go into hotels, saloons and other establishments for information? Did he just wait for mule trains or basic routes to bring them in? Yes, there is no identification of where these persons were located. And, there were hundreds of "miners" Were they all individually working their own areas, or were they working large mines for a wealthy mine owner? As far as John, how was he enumerated, how long had he been there, set up or just passing through, lumped as being a miner with the rest?
--One potential clue might come from the writing of Thomas Anderson. John Contes is enumerated last on page 106(Ancestry's listing). On page 111 is written a report on the mountains of Sierra County, and also a listing of population of various towns. This person's writing style makes it difficult to read, as does the quality of the image; but, you may obtain some idea of where he may have enumerated. I also looked for anyone being a Rancher to compare to the BLM land patents, but no land patents were issued in Sierra County that early.

As far as a permanent record of claims, there could be, otherwise that comment made is totally speculation without knowledge of that area in that time frame, or the systems in place to record claims. However, based on the number of miners flooding the area, I would doubt you would find one for him just based on a statistical average of "luck." But, it will take someone with knowledge of that area, that time period and the agencies available.

As far as a death record, I would NOT pay money for a search of a death record in Sierra County for several reasons. One being he died in Mendocino County per your own records.

The Bureau of Land Management has a database of land patents issued under the Homestead Act: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/default.aspx#searchTabI...
identifies William Ontis obtaining 40 acres of land in Mendocino County on 4/5/1909. In the 1900 Census he was living at Anderson, Mendocino Co, CA, born July 1867. Jane Ontis was living at Rohnerville, Humboldt Co. In the 1910 Census, William was still at Anderson; Jane is not listed. I can show you how to find the location of this land via topo maps on the Internet if interested.

Ron Bestrom
Tacoma, WA
Hi,
Mining claims in the early days weren't organized enough to have a permanent record of them. Many were claimed, claims were jumped and the original filer was never captured in the records.

The Sierra County California USGenWeb site, www.cagenweb.com/sierra/ tells about the history of the County with many links to other web sites. Also cagenweb.com/sierra/Record_Collections.html has more information.

In 1880 he, Jane and family are living in Cloverdale, Sonoma, California.
John Outis [how appears on Census] b. IL, 50, sheep rancher.
Jane, b. NC, 40.
William, b. CA, 12.
Mary, b. CA, 11.
Effie, b. CA, 8.

You can contact the Clerk-Recorder, sierracounty.ws/index.php?module=pagemaster&PAGE_us... and ask them to look up his death info. They charge a fee.
Successful Searching!

My great3 grandfather Richard Quinn's occupation was given in the 1867 marriage cert of his daughter as "gold digger".
I have done a bit of digging and found a gold miner called Richard Quinn living in Poker Flat, Sierra County.
He is on the 1880 census, the voter registers for 1869 & 1879 and the Sierra County, CA 1885 Directory (http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~shastaca/1...).
I cannot be sure but it seems possible that he is the right person. His daughter was married in Waterford Ireland and it is possible that the father left the family to find fortune in the Gold Rush/after the Irish Famine.
Any help or direction would be appreciated.

Index of mining claims

Was there a permanent record made of mining claims for the early days? If so, how do I find this and is it indexed?

The California State Census of 1852, Sierra County, page 106, line 45, has:
John Ontes, age 23, miner, born Illinois, last residence Illinois, male citizen of the US.
His is the last entry on that page, but unfortunately no indication of specific town or camp within the county is given. Was there more than one town at that time?
He was originally from Jersey County IL and appears there on 1850 census.
Not sure why I cannot find him in 1860 census, but would like to dig up more of his life as a miner, whether he worked a specific claim, etc.
By 1863 he's in Ukiah, Mendocino County with a livery business and in 1864 he's in Cloverdale in Sonoma County.
He married Jane, nee Weaver, Cathey, a Civil War widow and shipwreck survivor, supposedly on 22 Jul 1866, but we find no record of this in Sonoma County.
Any ideas?
