Marianne ~ There is a Howsley Road in Pleasant Grove, Sutter Co., CA. I happened to be at the LDS Library on Eastern Ave. in Sacramento and was brousing thru a Root Digger's newsletter from some time ago. I think the cover page was yellow. It talked about Howsley Road and how it's name became. I thought it was interesting, since I live in a small town not far from there and drive on Howsley Road to get to downtown Sacramento. If my memory is correct...Howsley did alot of things....Butcher, rancher, etc. Chickens where in there somewhere too! Pleasant Grove has a small cemetary, school, library, Post Office, and Sherrif's substation. I was just driving thru a couple weeks ago and what use to be the Butcher (barn) is now painted and is the Sherrif's substation?? If you're not in the Sacramento Area let me know and the next time I'm at the LDS library, I look the information up for you.

Sarah Howsley was indeed the sister of George Howsley who is burried in the Plesant Grove Cemetery. I am the person who puts flowers on their graves.

George's wife, Ruth White Howsley was first married to William Howsley in 1863 when thy all lived in Wisconsin. William was George's older brother. William and Ruth went to Gold Hill, Nevada (next to Virginia City) where William died. I do not know if it was a minning accident, illness, or whatever. That area was a "territory" then, and information from that period is scarce. William and Ruth had one child, Mary Margaret Howsley.

In 1900 Ruth White married William's brother, George. This family lived in Pleasnt Grove for many years. There is much about this couple that I do not know, but they raised 5 children.

Mary Margaret Howsley married Franklin Warrington Algeo. They lived in Plesant Grove at the Algeo Ranch.

Marianne,

My GGGrandmother was Sarah Howsley, born in Manchester, England, in 1836. According to a copy I have of a family history she came to America when a young girl with her parents, who settled at Shullsburg, Wisconsin. She became the mother of eight children. She lived to the good age of eighty three. She is buried along with her husband William Thomas Trevathan in the cemetery at Pleasant Grove. Also buried in the family plot are George Howsley, born 1830 and Ruth Howsley, born 1836. I assume these are brother and sister or sister in law of Sarah.

George S. Howsley married Lola Striplin on January 10, 1901 in Nicolaus, Sutter County. George S. Housley was the son of George W. Howsley. Lola Striplin, the daughter of James C. Striplin and granddaughter of S.C. Commissioner Lifous Striplin, was born in Sutter County in 1879. Lola passed away five years after her marrage to George,(after childbirth) on September 10, 1905 in Pleasant Grove. Lola was survived by two children. What became of George and the children after Lola's death?

Howsley Rd. was named for the family that Tom Howsley was part of, I am not sure if it was for any one person in the family, if so, it may have been for Tom's brother, George who was a Supervisor for the 3rd District. But I have a feeling that It was named before that.
The Howsleys and the Whites immigrated to Lafayette County, Wisconsin from different parts of England. In WI, William Howsley married Ruth White on March 5,1863. This couple moved to Gold Hill, Nevada, which is right next to Virginia City. There they had a child, Mary Margaret Howsley, on November 15, 1864. Somehow, William died there. Mary Margaret Howsley married Franklin Warrington Algeo, my great-grandfather.
Ruth White Howsley then married William's brother, George, in 1869. This couple had 5 children: Mary B. Howsley who marr-Mr. Baker, was widowed and lived in Plesant Grove; Thomas Howsley, a rancher in Plesant Grove who marr-Feb 10, 1891 to Teresa Osterbrink in Plesant Grove; Sophia M. Howsley who marr-Peter Darrach who was a grain grower in Plesant Grove; Annie M. Howsley who marr-William Horner; and George S. Howsley, a farmer and Supervisor of the 3rd District who marr-Lola Striplin, Jan 6, 1901.

On a side note, Sarah H. Howsley, the sister of William and George, married William Trevethan, and this couple also moved from Wisconsin to the Plesant Grove area.

Ruth White Howsley and George Howsley are burried in the Plesant Grove Cemetery. I have not been to Gold Hill Nevada to try and find the grave of William Howsley, or the cause of his death. Feel free to contact me for MORE...

I came across Howsley Rd. as the location of the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sutter County. I am a descendent of Thomas
Howsley who lived in that area and was wondering if it was named for him.
